How Long Before You Start Getting Hungry?
PdxMan replied to Catracks's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hunger, now, is a totally different animal. I don't crave food like I used to. I snack because I have to get calories in, not because I am hungry. But, what I do feel is body hunger. Meaning that my body feels a lack of nutrition, and so I eat. I relate it to a fire. I can feel there is less heat being produced, so I throw another log on. I am very active now, and my story is going to be different, for sure. When I say active, I mean I run 5 miles at a pretty good clip. Do an hour of aerobics at the gym and lift weights for and hour about 3x a week. So, I have to eat pretty much throughout the day in order to get enough calories to sustain that, but the feeling is still there and was before I was this active. As I told my wife when I was 1 month out, if I didn't have to eat, I wouldn't. That is how much I cared about food. Now, going on 7 months out, I enjoy eating, and can eat pretty much anything, but everything is different, which, for me, is what I needed. This morning, I took the kids out to Breakfast. They let me order off the senior menu which consisted of 1 egg over easy, 1 piece of toast (buttered, Whole wheat) hash browns and sausage link. I at 3/4 of the egg, two small bites each of hash browns, sausage and toast. I WAS STUFFED! I am the cook in the family and made a huge traditional Turkey dinner for Thanksgiving. The family asked how I could do it, being around and making all this food while I couldn't eat that much. I told them that I really didn't care. It's not like being a bartender who is alcoholic. I can still eat. I can be around food. It doesn't bother me at all. The sleeve just keeps me from scarfing down huge amounts of food. So, yes, it is totally normal to not care about food. This is not true for all sleevers, so I consider it a blessing. I have heard of the recent surgery folk eating popcorn (I started back after 2 months) and even read a post from a lady the other day who was asking why it hurts when she eats solid food ... she was one week out ... :banghead: What do you tell these people? 300 calories/day in the first two weeks ... sounds a little low, but not too bad. I was getting about 400-500. Two Protein shakes (2 x 160) and some other broth. How much protein are you getting in right now. Early, early on, you have to get your liquids in. If you don't, you're looking at an ER trip to get hooked up to an IV. Just keep following your program closely. If it sounds crazy, it is. -
I'm a beer girl all the way, I like an occasional glass of wine but otherwise it's beer only. The band has seriously affected how much alcohol I can handle. Pre band, easily a 6 pack without thinking. Went out this past Thursday and I was tipsy after 1/2 a beer. It was actually shocking and almost embarrassing to myself. I didn't do anything to embarrass myself I was just very shocked that I felt the way I did after 1/2 of one. I'm not complaining...guess I'll be saving money on my nights out. Has anyone else's limits been affected like this after the band? I expected not to be able to handle a much but i certainly wasn't expecting to be drunk off of 1. I had dinner before going out so I wasn't drinking on an empty stomach. I went out last month and my limit was 2 beers. The only thing I could think of was that I had a fill on the 3rd...would that do anything??

Liquor And The Lap Band
ccsweetss replied to bandedbob's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Banded Bob, Thank you for this post I do drink, and understand living a lifestyle and have reached my weightloss goal (I still have 10 pds to go) I do not deprive myself.......and believe everything in moderation How I did it....... When I knew I would be drinking (which sometimes would be 3-4 times a week, depending on work and events)........ I would eat ONLY Protein and Vegetables For alcohol, I usually stick to wine or spritzers (half wine, half diet 7up), occasionally I will have a molson 67, but try to stay way from beer I just always made sure I ate healthy and then drank what I wanted too! Not saying this is for everyone, but it is what I have had most success with. If you ever need to talk, let me know! I have lost almost 90 pounds and still enjoy life Caroline -
How Many Experience This From Their Husbands..
Lissa replied to SunshineMom2's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just want to say that I respect your religious beliefs, BUT I think you are doing yourself, your kids and your future grand kids a huge disservice. In my own family I am seeing the results of abuse, on into the fourths generation. My grandpa beat and verbally abused his wife. All of his children have lingering problems because of it, from abusive marriages to drug and alcohol addictions. His grandchildren, including me, suffered as children from abusive and neglectful parenting. The great grandchildren, so far, are a mixed.bag. Mine are the oldest and I really tried to break the pattern of abuse, but many of my cousins are addicts and/or in abusive relationships. The Bible says that what a man does will be returned to him even unto the fourth generation. That's certainly true in my family. If you break the cycle of abuse now, perhaps your family won't endure what my family has endured. Lissa -
Just curious.... What is the least caloric non carbonated alcoholic beverage? Anyone know?
-
Yes before and yes after. However, right now I'm focussed on getting my last 8 lbs off so I'm having a month alcohol free. I love my red wine ... Mmmmmm.... Lap band doesn't mean you have to stop enjoying yourself, just in smaller amounts

Were any of you moderate drinkers before banding and either 1) stopped drinking after lapband or 2) continue to drink after banding.

Undecided On Which Surgery, Looking For Advice, And Info.
happy1957 replied to Kiki Von Moonshine's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I choose the Sleeve for me for various reasons and some that others have already posted . # 1- I am older, have more aches and pains and an artificial shoulder with neck issues (due to an accident) I have painful flare-ups, I do not have constant pain, but when I'm miserable, I want Advil which helps immensely. No ibuprofen at all with RYN. #2 I did not like the malabsorption piece of RYN, as I have seen many folks in the medical practices I have worked in with the difficulties of not getting the Vitamins and nutrients they need. One poor woman could not recover from a constant out break of herpes on her face. It was almost to the point she needed a mask. It was horrific. Her malnutrition state made her look like a walking skeleton. Nearly bald, lesions all over her face and sickly thin. I have also seen one patient who ate and "drank" past the RYN, who had about 250 lbs to lose, lost 100 and then gained back about 200. Still unsure how that can happen, but alcohol is highly caloric and that was her new addiction. # 3 In RYN, the portion of the stomach that is left dangling, is incapable of having any testing . Therefore if it gets ulcerous which can lead to cancer, or is diseased in any way, there is no way to test or treat it? # 4 I am also so fond of my hair and teeth. I was just in fear of the lack of vitamins and didn't want to live on a ton of replacements. I'm not saying that deficiencies won't happen with the Sleeve, but it's less likely they will be life altering. # 5 I did not want my plumbing rerouted which is a high risk for leaks, and or risk stretching my pouch like so many have both in the Lap band and RYN. Unfortunately I lost a dear friend on Jan 3rd to a leak , 3 months post op from RYN. SIgh. Overall, I had but one choice, I went to the meeting, listened to the information about all three surgeries and had the sleeve not been a choice for me because of insurance or for whatever reason. I would have died fat. Hope this helps in some way.. ULTIMATELY, IT"S YOUR DECISION AND YOU HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT !! Good luck with your decision. -

Crispaholic replied to MCCLB's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi! MCCLB ...... Well meet your sister....I am the exact same....I actually put on weight too....and have yo yo'ed ......It is funny as you joined the site on the 16th of March which is my birthday.....Like you I suffer from depression....I was not on medication until later in life....but was depressed on and off during my college years.....a lot of my depression is caused by my unhealthy relationship with food.....a lovely lady on this site told me before she thought of junk food as an alcoholic does with alcohol....she said to clear my house of the junk food....and as we are human it is okay to indulge and taste junk the odd time....but to go out and buy it not store it in my house....this was really helpful.....I am actually decreasing my anti depressant medication....it seems I was over filled and regurgitated a lot which can cause damage to the band....I actually would throw up and then try eat a few minutes later....it was a physical and psychological battle that needed to be fought....I am with a therapist and learning not to feel so negative about myself....food is a reward and also a punishment for me.....so now I have to divorce food and remarry it all over again in a more loving relationship if that makes sense.....we are human so who cares what the doctor thinks....you are the important one...and it is really brave of you to acknowledge and accept that you were sabotaging yourself....that is the battle half one....thank you for cheering me up.....I have been in the same position....but feeling a lot better now that I accept my strengths and weaknesses -
I Am Almost Four Months Out And Down 8 Sizes!
BigLittleSister replied to sarahh1828's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Great work! So happy for you! I am about to have the surgery myself and have so many questions!!! How long were you off of work? How long until you could get back to exercising and lifting things? What were you eating? What are you eating now? Can you have pop, alcohol, wine, pasta. etc? How have your friends, family, and coworkers responded to you losing the weight? Have people been supportive/unsupportive? How did you handle it? How have you coped with your body changing? I think the hardest part for me has been the comfort of food and just being alone with it. I've always felt like I needed to hide from the world. It's going to be strange having new opportunities and doors opened. I hope to receive words of encouragement from everyone on here as I feel like you're the only ones who will be supportive of my choice for surgery and understanding of the hardships people like us go through. Thanks so much! Good luck with your continued success! -
I believe in Atkins you do not count the carbs, but do count the calories. Also, some get nasty tummy from sugar alcohol... gas and runs....

Just Got Back From Orientation
honk replied to myownjourney's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think this doctor does'nt like to do Lapband surgeries. They require having more staff to do the fills maybe he does'nt like having 1-2 nurses on staff. In regards to people "your age" he may feel that younger people have trouble living a life style where they choose heathly foods 90% of the time. Though I think that's a bit judgemental. Do I wish the band was availble when I was your age ABSOLUTELY! As to alcohol. Did he/she say alcohol or did they say beer? Most doctors say you should not drink carbinated beverages (beer OR soda). Luckily for me I have never been a drinker. So I know this is easy for me to say. I just googled Long Island Ice Team and it has 292 calories. Could have a nice piece of cake or bowl of ice cream for 292 calories (yeh I know they have higher fat). My opinion? Find another doctor. -
So I bought some sugar free candies to have a "sweet fix" without getting all the carbs. But the package counts sugar alcohol as carbs. Are these carbs the same as regular carbs as far as weight loss is concerned or do they only affect your blood sugar differently? I guess a better question would be if I am trying to stay below 40g of carbs a day, do I count these as part of that total?

Just Got Back From Orientation
elcee replied to myownjourney's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I think your Dr is wrong the band does work so long as the patient is prepared to work with it. It doesn't make you lose weight on it's own, it's not magical, doesn't cause any kind of malabsorption the only thing it does is make you eat smaller portions oh and of course it helps to control hunger. But if you are prepared to work with it by making healthy choices , exercising and not trying to eat around the band then yes it does work. Think of your band as being a partner in your weight loss journey but you are the managing director. Now I'm not a Dr, I don't have all the stats but he may be correct when he talks about younger people having minimal success.I am sure it is not true for all people your age and that there are some who have been successful but many of the younger people on this board seemed to have struggled. I don't know if it is because they aren't ready to make the changes that are necessary to be successful or if there is another reason. I am sure that you can have alcohol again in the future. The problem with alcohol is that is high in calories and they are empty calories. Once banded it is preferred that you eat your calories not drink them. the other thing with alcohol is that people tend to eat more when they are drinking and they often don't think about what and how much they are eating. Deciding which WLS is right for you is a big decision. Different surgeries suit different people. If you are sure that the band is your surgery of choice then I would suggest you find another Dr that will support you. All the best. -
Watching Other People Overeat Grosses Me Out. What Is With That?!
Shae replied to Lisa821's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a food addict. There are soooo many emotions that go along with realizing it, fighting it, and relapsing. I saw a show where the guy compared being a food addict to being an alcoholic who has to have a drink 4 to 6 times a day but not too much. I was able to quit drugs and cigs because I completely stopped having them. You just can't quit eating. It's a constant struggle. I have not found a psych in my area that specializes in food addiction but I am still looking. Good luck. Feel free to PM me if you need support. -
You won't get stuck everytime you put something in your mouth. As I said earlier you get stuck when you eat incorrectly (too fast, not chewing properly etc). And yes getting stuck is a good deterrent to bad eating habits as once it has happened you don't want it to happen again. But even the best intentions don't always work. How many times have you had a hangover and sworn off alcohol? Did you and if you did for how long? LOL. Please don't let the thought of being stuck stop you getting banded. I love my band and my only regret is that I didn't get banded sooner. I love being slim and sexy far more that I love eating giant meals.

Talking W/husband,family & Friends
NWgirl replied to Mrs.Rogers's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Please do, that is why I changed Dr.'s as well... I was seeing someone at a clinic I visit off and on because I hadn't chosen a 'real' PC and each time I went in for weight loss appointments, the lady made me feel like crap. If she doesn't want the money my insurance will pay her with, so be it. Even though we are bigger people, we still deserve compassion and respect for our problems. Some people will never experience food addiction and so it is hard for them to wrap their mind around it. For example, A long time ago, I had a conversation with someone I love dearly about my food issues and they asked me why I didn't just "put the food down." I about went crazy when they said that, which is why I am also being very selective in who I will tell. I don't need to be insulted over my weight issues. You wouldn't belittle an alcoholic or a drug addict, so what makes us any different? -
Weight Gained Since Having Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Georgia replied to sleeve 4 me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In answer to sleeve 4 me: Nom I don't take any special meds now or drink any alcohol (never have), I do, however, drink with meals. Having been trying to stop that again and I think it does make a difference. Have lost 3-4 lbs in last week and half from no junk. Doing a "Daniel Fast" right now with my church so my diet includes more carbs but they are GOOD carbs (whole grain etc) and beginning the year by this plus the elimination of junk food has caused me to start losing. Going to try to follow more closely original guidelines and lose the pounds gained plus want to try to get off another 5-10 (so I will have a few to play with!). I'll let you all know how it goes. I have found that it does make a huge difference WHAT I eat and still have good restriction. I can eat little dense protein and things like beans fill me up very quickly. Gonna be HEALTHY! Love having all of you as sounding boards! -
Now That You Have Had The Surgury, What Negatives Have You Experienced Thus Far?
lellow replied to marketingdude's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh I just thought of a negative - I hate it when you get stuck while you're out, and find you need a toilet quick smart to PB, and your mouth is filling up with saliva like crazy, and you can't get there fast enough. It's happened to me twice - once I didn't quite make it to the toilet. Suffice to say - embarrasing! Another negative (or maybe it's a positive) - if I am getting 'full' my nose starts to drip. Anyone who's close to me sees me start to sniff and they all look at me like 'ok, stop eating NOW'. Oh and I can't get falling down drunk coz trust me, you don't want to get alcoholic poisoning with the band. Puking from the bottom of your tummy is NOT fun. It can lead to needing an emergency unfill. Again, not sure that's not really a positive though... -
Glass Of Vino After Surgery? What Are The Consequences?
Mrs.Newme replied to CCWriter's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just a thought on this topic, could it be maybe one reason we are restricted form alcohol is known to cause dehydration? Also I think I would be worried if I did erronously ended up inebriated and risked vomitting, but not sure if that would be a risk. I rarely drink myself and if I have a glass of wine, it is typically with dinner.. It will be interesting to see the effects -
Glass Of Vino After Surgery? What Are The Consequences?
SKCUNNINGHAM replied to CCWriter's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have occasionally have had a little bit of alcohol since the sleeve surgery. I didn't have any until about 5-6 months after surgery. I have had a small glass of liquor (irish whiskey or tequila) straight - and it takes less than 1 oz. for me to get a buzz. Good that I have practiced those tiny sips! I also have had about 1/4 cup of beer or wine twice. I only drank the 1/4 cup because that was when I felt a buzz and stopped. I haven't noticed any ill effects - but I did have to account for the calories in my daily totals. -

Glass Of Vino After Surgery? What Are The Consequences?
MegInNOLA replied to CCWriter's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a glass of wine occasionally. I think the first time I had it post surgery was at around 5 months. Yeah, you definitely feel the buzz a lot faster; I don't know if it's the lower body weight or the fact that I'm such an irregular drinker--I'm talking maybe a glass of wine once a month or so. I do drink margaritas on occasion, as well, and find those kick my fanny pretty fast (so have to be very careful). If you tend to drink while there is food around, be very cautious about over-indulging because of lowered inhibitions or just not paying attention to what you eat. I actually can use that to my advantage sometimes--if I drink a few sips of margarita and chill for a few minutes, I can actually eat a bit more than usual (I think things just relax in my tummy a bit?); for me, this is not a bad thing and can be a really good thing, as my sleeve is still really small and very picky. If you're still in an active losing phase, maybe it's not such a good thing and is another reason to be cautious regarding alcohol. Also, remember the dehydration factor. Alcohol can cause dehydration, so if you're having any trouble at all getting in your Water, subbing alcohol for some of that liquid probably isn't a smart idea. -
Glass Of Vino After Surgery? What Are The Consequences?
Escape_Pod replied to CCWriter's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What I read is that rapid weight loss puts a lot of strain on your liver, and alcohol strains it even further, so the combination is just not a great idea. There's also the fast inebriation effect you mentioned, and the possibility of a transfer addiction. I think all three factors combined is why so many surgeons advise against alcohol, at least for awhile. Personally, I've just never given a hoot about drinking, so the extra empty calories and carbs for something I don't miss aren't worth it. I'd much rather have a mini Reeses pb cup! To each her own..... -
Glass Of Vino After Surgery? What Are The Consequences?
CCWriter posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'd be interested in knowing the science behind why not to have alcohol after surgery. I just think it would be lovely to be able to have an adult beverage with hubby in the evening occasionally. I know you can get inebriated more easily, and it also is reputed not to stay with you as long. My physician recommends not drinking any alcoholic beverages for six months after surgery. A few questions: Does it interfere with your wound healing? Does it impact your liver adversely? Does it slow down your weight loss? Looking forward to hearing from everybody!! C2
