It depends on what type of job you have. A desk job would be easier to go back to work sooner than a physically demanding factory line job. For the most part you'll feel fine, just tired maybe for the first part of a week.

Hello and welcome, I would never have begun the pre op diet earlier than needed its brutal. Everybody on these forums has a different diet given to them and a liquid diet seems to be voted the worst. My pre op was 3 weeks of only non starchy vegetables and nothing else and I cursed it and couldn't wait for it to end. The first 4 days of any pre op diet are truly the worst and then hunger pangs dissipate somewhat. Keep talking to the wonderful people in the forum and read the back pages, it really helped me. Good luck

2 weeks post op & Stomach bloated....
Missy1960 replied to prairiedawn's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Thank you who mentioned swelling can be for 6-7 weeks. Oddly, my huge emergency C section scar is invisible. I had this 1985 but was from belly button almost to under breasts and inch wide. Hmmm great if never surfaced again although at 61 who cares right? 😂 -
I took 3 weeks off after my sleeve and that was exactly right for me. I'd say I was working at 90% efficiency when I went back. I was tired but the working helped distract me. It's really variable. I hope you make a nice speedy recovery OP!

it depends on the person - and also what kind of job you're talking about. I had bypass - and a desk job. I took three weeks off, but I could have gone back after two.

As some are saying 2-6 weeks seem to be the standard. I was traveling for work within 2 weeks. Working remotely (e-mails and meetings) sporadically within a couple of days. That being said, I was TIRED... definitely needed a nap a day during the first couple of weeks. Once I went to pureed food and was getting in enough nutrients, that got better quickly.

What foods have you broken up with?
Arancini replied to Smanky's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
That’ll fade! Im only 5 months out and all my “early stage” cravings are completely gone. The first 4-8 weeks I felt devastated because I was convinced my surgery “didnt work”. I was craving food CONSTANTLY, being obsessed with watching tiktok junk food compilations and wanting to eat so bad. I havent had junk food or what we typically would consider “bad” food but I have had pieces of food I had glorified in those weeks (guacamole, fried egg, chocolate protein yoghurt) and I hated it. Your taste buds change. Your priorities change (because you know you can only take a few bites). And ultimately you change. It’s hard to believe now (and when people told me “back then” I wasn’t convinced either. I thought “yeah yeah except I’m different!”. But here I am now writing this) but trust me. Hang in there. Sit it out. Stick to your diet. Trust the process. I have faith in you! -
Sending hugs you will be in a bit of pain the first couple of days but it will be worth it when you see the weight come off and a couple of weeks out you will start to feel better you will love the new you and you've already started on this side of the road , let me know how you get on sending healing prays and look after your self speak to you soon

Anyone who had their surgery earlier this month starting to eat again? Just had my first "pureed stage" food. I'm taking it slow texture-wise so I started with soup. I am so happy to be cooking again. I made a big meal prep of broccoli carrot cream soup with unflavored protein powder. I sweated down some garlic, onions, oregano, black pepper, and very small diced-up carrots. I then added vegetable stock, low sodium, and half a small pack of frozen chopped broccoli. I blended together fat-free half/half with 2 scoops of unflavored zero card protein powder (isopure 50 grams of protein total) then added it to the soup. I then transferred it all to my blender and made it very fine. It's not thick at all but the flavor is amazing after having nothing but sweet protein drinks for weeks. I had 1/2 a cup with a teaspoon of cheddar on top. I didn't feel full after but I'm so scared about dumping so I just stopped lol. My dietician says I still have to have protein drinks to compensate if I feel I'm not getting everything through food. I will say it's AMAZING to get the taste of real food in my mouth. I personally hate sweets and sweet drinks so the protein shakes really are starting to gross me out. I'm excited to try my other pureed recipes and continue the journey! Hope everyone is doing well. -
I am just beginning this process. I am required to do 4 months of dietary sessions with my primary. We have actually been doing this since I got on prednisone. I keep blowing up. 109 lbs in 11 mths with a 1000calorie or less diet. I have 2 lung diseases and RA so I will be on some dose of prednisone for the rest of my life. I am working on a taper down. I am hoping to get down to 5mg? I think 10 mg is going to be my magic number, unfortunately so my battle will be forever but getting all this weight off now is going to be a good thing. I am at a point where I can barely walk anywhere without my O2 dropping down in the low 80s. I am on oxygen 24/7. My risk of a cardiac event is alarming. This is the main reason why my dr wanted me to have the sleeve surgery. I want to get rid of the type 1 diabetes that prednisone threw me into after my SECOND dose! I have already started a scheduled meal day and cut my portions down to child size(I 1use a kids plate and utensils). I sub one meal with a protein shake. I will graduate to 2 shakes closer to surgery pre-op. I am really concerned about my support system. My husband already does most of the housework. I cook when I feel up to it. Maybe 3-4 times a week. However, he works nights so that he can take me to dr appts. Well, he sleeps ALL DAY LONG. From 9ish until 7 pm at night. He says he can't function without 10 full hours of sleep. On his days off, he sleeps all day and most of the night. He says he has to catch up. He is exhausted and sore. I don't know if I can manage by myself post-op. My son lives in the same town but he has work and such, I am sure he would come to help for a few days. My daughter lives in Florida. She has 3 kids. When I asked if she would come for the surgery since I am high-risk with my lungs, she said that my youngest 2 grandchildren's birthdays are near the time I will be scheduled. Could I plan it some other time? I was devastated that she said that. My Pulmonologist said I have over a 65% chance of not waking up(my risk of a cardiac event if I don't have surgery, is 100%). So, I am not sure how much help I am going to need after surgery. I know everyone is different but, can I do things on my own? I even have 4 dogs to take out all day. One on a leash. Please tell me I will be ok?

I think the time you need is really unpredictable. I had decided to take 6 weeks off so I could get through the liquid and puree stages on a normal eating schedule as I do shift work and 12 hours shifts as well. But I ended up taking nearly 10 weeks as mentally the surgery knocked me around but going back to work gave me some of my old routine back and helped me get out of my funk but I certainly wasn't expecting what I went through to happen. We have also seen people post about being back at work going to the gym etc after a week 😳 I don't know that exercise other than walking is a good idea so soon after surgery but anyway I think 2 weeks depending on how physically demanding your job is. Is about average.

Hi and Thanks for answering. I looked through all my papers I was given and funny I don't see anything about sodium but I could be over looking it. I did see where chicken and stars and cream of chicken was ok which I ate the first week minus the chicken in the soup. I felt kind of funny due to the carbs and sodium in it. Might be why I have only lost 3 pounds, 2 weeks tomorrow since surgery. I am not suppose to advance to solid foods till next week and actually the thought of anything solid even a egg doesn't seem possible. I am living on soups, greek yogurt, fat free cottage cheese and protein shakes. I did eat a half a can of the deviled ham yesterday but kinda felt like I was in a no no zone, lol. I am not a big drinker, so getting the 64 oz down is a real challenge, I am using crystal light as a helper. -
Accountability Post .... Being honest with yourself

Hey we had surgery about the same time and I was thinking the same thing. I hit my goal weight and stalled…I’d still like to drop a bit more, but it hasn’t really happened. I want to take the month of March to really make sure that this is my “final weight”, and it’s not just where I landed because I loosened up my food plan. I want to start tracking this month, really cut down on snacking and get my evening time eating back to where I want it. So for me my resolutions are: I will track my food, even if it’s a guess on some items like dinners out. I get stuck on “well I don’t know how much this is so I won’t bother”, and I know that’s a cop out. I will make sure that snack food doesn’t get into the house- no nuts, Greek yogurt bars, chips, etc. I’ll keep up my current exercise routine Let’s have an awesome March! -
Today is two weeks past surgery. Recovery has gone well with no complications. My surgery was a revision from sleeve to bypass for hernia and GERD issues. I've dropped 10+ lbs in the two weeks which seems right in line (I was only at 227 on date of surgery). Per my surgeon's plan today we could progress to soft solid proteins, so it was great to have an ounce or two of sliced deli meat for lunch. Only downside is that they do an internal stitch to hold things together and that pain is real. I'm told it'll go away 4-6 weeks following surgery but until then it's the only downside to an otherwise good recovery so far.

I could take as much time as needed, my job would just compile into a complete mess the longer I took. 😩 My employer is aware of up to 6 weeks, I am just really hoping to be back in 2-3. High hopes!!
-
Would there be a chance to get some actual leave? I would've probably been able to do it in 2 weeks, but man it was nice to get all my habits off to a good start by taking 6 weeks. Granted, I don't know much about the work culture in America, other than I do not wish to trade
-
Goodness, I am REALLY hoping to be released back to work at my 2 week follow up. I would go crazy 6 weeks, work would be so horrible when I returned.
-
Hey! Mine says 4 weeks for sleeve, 6 weeks for RNY and mini gastric bypass.
-
Mine says 2-6 weeks, depending on recovery and how physically demanding your job is.

Hi, I am new too. Had my surgery 2-16-22 and still confused about alot. Seems all surgeons are different and tell their patients different from what I am reading. I was told to advance to soft mushy foods yesterday 2-28-22 and prior to that it was anything I could drink through a straw but not to use a straw, but that included soup. Still though confused on what type of foods that are allowed now. We had a zoom meeting with many and I don't remember that coming up, other than the amount of protein we needed and that we could have chicken broth and chicken and stars the first week. So going thorough all my hand outs given but don't see anything about processed food such as campbell's soups other than no tomato soup. Wondering if things like canned deviled ham or deviled chicken is allowed? Does anyone know or a good resource? -
So excited for you! I just joined today and am loving the supportiveness of this group. Loved hearing you say "But as I’ve read on here, enjoy the journey. Don’t rush. Be patient. Be gentle." I definitely need ed to hear that. I was going to start last year on this journey, but got side tracked by Breast Cancer. All set now and ready to go. Starting pre-op diet this week. Causing me much anxiety. Gonna have LapBand from 2009 removed in about a month, then DS 3 months later. And I can fit my required dietician visits in during that time so it all seems to be lining up. Wishing you all the best. Candice

Starting at 5'6. 351bls.
Having lapband removal in about 4-6 weeks. Then DS 3 months later. Then double knee replacement about 1 hr after that.
Going to start pre-op diet this week. Doing it for about a month before lapband removal. So scared to start it. Don't know why, but I have so much anxiety about not eating all day and feeling hungry. But I hear the shakes are filling.

Hey! Just seeing this - didn’t get notification. So happy for you! How are you doing with surgery next week? I got in with Dr. Sanborn who was also nice and said I’m a candidate for bypass or sleeve so I’ll need to decide🤷🏽♀️. I’m 1/2 done with my pre op / insurance requirements. How long did it take to get you scheduled for the surgery? -
