    Foodie Life Post-op

Well, really just based on my own research and info session. Lower BMI, no history of GERD, experience of a friend that was of similar stats and had VSG. Haven't had consult with surgeon yet, so actually meant as I move forward and have that appt, I'll certainly trust the Doc opinion. 2. I have Bipolar I disorder. I was sleeved five weeks ago and everything has gone really smooth and no regrets. I have taken a lot of psychotropic drugs in the past 20 years and there were some that caused me to gain large amounts of weight in a very short period of time so I have a lot of experience with this. I have been on the same meds for the past four years and have not had any weight gain during this time. In fact I lost 65 lbs in the last two years. The drugs that I am currently taking that have not caused any weight gain are: Latuda, Lamictal, Ziprasidone and Wellbutrin (I know, it's a lot but I've been pretty stable for over three years). I also recently weaned off of Effexor after taking it for years and can say it definitely did not cause weight gain either. Since being sleeved on May 1 I have had a really good mood with no changes so at least for now I can confidently say that I am absorbing all my meds as well as I did before surgery. That's a big relief!!! I was considered a high-risk WLS patient because of my Bipolar disorder and the real risk that it could go out of remission and be more difficult to bring under control again if meds were not being absorbed. I really had to do a lot of work with my Bariatric Surgery Center to get approval for the surgery from their psychologist. I did a lot of research and consulted a lot with my Psychiatrist and finally decided that I was willing to take the risk to lose the weight. It's a big decision and anyone with Bipolar, or any other serious mental illness that requires life-long dependence on medication, must take their time to think very seriously about before deciding to have surgery. Best wishes to everyone and feel free to message me if you have any questions about Bipolar disorder treatment and WLS. Or if you just want to vent about dealing with a major mental illness
  3. Hair loss is common about 3-4 months after ANY major surgery, not just bariatric. There’s usually nothing you can do to stop it. My hair loss lasted maybe 2 or 3 months, but the rate of loss is back to normal now.
  4. Has anyone gotten a colonoscopy since they've had their band? My question concerns the colonoscopy prep. My doctor has prescribed Osmoprep which are pretty large pills. You take four of these pills every 15 minutes. In all you take 32 pills. I wonder if anyone has taken these and if there is a problem with the band. I am nervous about taking all these pills with the small pouch. I asked my bariatric surgeon and she didn't seem overly concerned, but I thought I would see if anyone has actually used this prep rather than the liquid prep. I would rather take the pills any day if I can avoid that awful liquid, but if that is preferable, I will go that route.

    Body Lift Surgeon Recommendations?

I know you didn't direct this question at me, but some surgeons have a limit as to how many hours they'll spend on a surgery. I know Dr. Zachary doesn't like to operate for more than about six hours - and some surgeons are good for more or less than that. So I had my procedures done in two separate surgeries. I was OK with that as I didn't want some tired guy with a knife cutting on me. But yes - some surgeons are willing to operate for several hours. Someone on this or another bariatric site said she was under the knife for eleven hours with Dr. Sauceda. But you're right - his safety record is good, so he's evidently good to go for that long. btw: Dr. Sauceda was the only one of my consults who said he'd do everything in one day. Dr. Zachary and Dr. Shifrin both said they'd do my LBL in one surgery, and my breast lift and arm lift in a second surgery. I had one other consult in Chicago - the surgeon's name escapes me at the moment, but he was also going to split it into two surgeries (I think he was going to do them in different combinations and/or in a different order than the other two, but still - two surgeries)
  6. ohhh one more thing!!!!..... I got a call from pacific Bariatric and they set me up for my 3 day appointment with them for June 14th! =) then shortly after that I will get my surgery date. I will keep everyone posted!

    MEDICARE AND SUPPLIMENTAL INSURANCE

This is from Medicares website, the sleeve may not be. But thank you for the reference I will check it out. Bariatric surgery Who's eligible?Medicare covers some bariatric surgical procedures, like gastric bypass surgery and laparoscopic banding surgery, when you meet certain conditions related to morbid obesity. Note Your doctor or other health care provider may recommend you get services more often than Medicare covers. Or, they may recommend services that Medicare doesn’t cover. If this happens, you may have to pay some or all of the costs. It’s important to ask questions so you understand why your doctor is recommending certain services and whether Medicare will pay for them. Your costs in Original MedicareFor surgeries or procedures, it's difficult to know the exact costs in advance because no one knows exactly what services you'll need. If you're having surgery or a procedure, you can do some things in advance to figure out approximately how much you'll have to pay.
  8. I attend monthly support meetings held at the hospital's wellness center sponsored by the bariatric group. There is an information session for people considering surgery from 6-7pm (attended by one of the bariatric surgeons). That is followed by the support group meeting from 7-8pm. The monthly support group meetings have a theme and sometimes there are guest speakers. Some of the guest speakers included a bariatric psychologist and a trainer from the medical integration program. The meetings are attended by about 40 people and I will continue to attend until I no longer find them useful.
  9. I researched a lot before I even went the bariatric route. I knew what I was getting into before I even talked to the doctor. But my acceptance was different because I went through the bariatric clinic on the military base and you don't have to go through all the hoops most insurance companies have you go through. I still had to go to seminars, I did four 2hr long nutrition classes, I had to go to support groups, and the psych evaluation. I still have two more classes I need to do for pre op one is an hr and the other is 2hrs. They expect you to start eating better and exercising, but we didn't have to go on a diet. They said if we went on a binge and gained weight then that would show them you're not ready for the surgery and they wouldn't do it. But for me my weight gain wasn't because I am an over eater, binge eater, ect. I gained weight from PCOS it caused me to have a metabolic disorder. So my body was just making me gain weight because it wasn't processing my insulin correctly. Basically my body is slow to let go of fat, but also holds creates more fat then usual. I would have to work out 3x's harder then the average person to lose pcos weight which is ridiculous and why I havent been able to lose it. It sucks because most of my life I was thin everyone in my family is thin... but lucky me I was the only one to have PCOS. I just keep gaining and gaining and its not from eating poorly and massive amounts of food its from PCOS that's why I always said its the Devil! lol But back to my original question. They never said stop eating everything we wont be able to eat after surgery at a certain time before surgery. I know for sure they expect you to stop on your pre-op diet, but before that all they said is don't gain more. So like you can see some stopped well before and some rode it out until the 2wk pre op diet and still cheated. I just wanted to see what the majority was. Nov 2013 Sleevers Progress So Far...

Well I had my ankle surgery on Monday, 2/3, and good news it was a lot of damaged tissue causing my problems not damaged ligaments. The surgeon was able to remove the tissue and he said my recovery should go quickly from here. Physical Therapy starts on Monday and I will only be out of work for two weeks, total. Since they had told me to expect a month of no weight bearing, aka no walking, this was all a great relief. I am hoping to be able to begin working out in the next few weeks even if that is being able to start on a treadmill! My weight loss has continued and I have been very conscientious about what I am eating, I am down to 252, although iv fluids from surgery I went back to 254, but I think that will be off by this weekend. The pain has actually had me so nauseated that I have only been able to eat about half of what we normally can so as you can imagine this has been very little! (1/4 of package of oatmeal, 2 1/2 meatballs... these are meals!) Thank goodness I still have protein shakes to fall back on as I am back to two of these a day to keep up my intake. Last night I did manage to eat 2 1/2 oz of ground sirloin with 1/2 oz of low fat cheddar but could barely move after! Please be careful when comparing yourself to others, we are each different and as long as you are steady in your weight loss and following our new way of life, you are on the right road! I have started packing up clothes that I can no longer wear because they literally fall off. I stood up the other day and my pants almost fell completely off, it was awesome. Some of my shirts I can't wear because they fall off my shoulders or expose my bra! I am lucky that in storage I have bins of clothes in sizes down to 16-18 so I went and picked out a whole new wardrobe. The hospital I had my surgery also has a clothing exchange for their bariatric patients so I am bring them everything I can't wear so others can use it on their exciting adventure. It is so awesome to put some of these clothes that I haven't been able to wear in years back on, thank goodness trends come full circle!!!
  12. My hospital bariatric center holds one every second wednesday of the month. There's one coming up this wednesday. I love going to them and always feel inspired and comforted when I go to them. I started a month before surgery and have gone to every meeting since. Lucky for me my hospital is about 45 seconds drive away from me, just two blocks. XD

    Considering Surgery

Ask if your local bariatric surgeon has an information seminar. Your surgeon may recommend a procedure. Here is a link that may help in your research phase. https://www.obesitycoverage.com/the-complete-patients-guide-to-bariatric-surgery/ Age 45 and 254 pounds, My wake-up call was being admitted to ICU. My internal organs shutting down from diabetic ketoacidosis. My heart stopped, and they brought me back. I wish it didn’t take that moment to understand my weight was slowly killing me. I looked at how many times I’ve lost weight then had regain with extra. I needed a long-term solution to get my health back. I was sleeved in 2014. Five years out, no complications, no regret, and maintaining in the 130’s.

    Anyone have United Healthcare???

I will have UHC as of May 1, I can't wait. I have Aetna now, and the company I work for does cover bariatric, and will with UHC also. That was a requirement before I agreed to pay another year of insurance premiums. I went to orientation 2 weeks ago, and am calling to find out when my first appt is with the surgeon tomorrow. No referrals needed.
  15. I think to some degree you can "cheat". I stuck to clear liquids until day 6 or 7 and then tried pureed and full liquids. I think in that case it's ok because although a thicker liquid...it is still a liquid. And I only skipped one or two days ahead. I would however...not eat any solid foods yet. None...atleast not until week 3 or 4...which is what my doctor states. And he's at a bariatric center of excellence. Also always take in small, tiny amounts and slowly to see how you're body will react..still eating solids is probably a big no-no right now.

    June 2009 Surgery

Whoo-Hoo!! 8 days post-op and doctor and nutritionist moved me up to next food stage. So I now can cottage cheese, ricotta, eggs as protein alternatives to protein shakes. Ten lb weight loss so far, which I know is not as much as some folks on here with post-op diet, but I'll take it. I also can get back on the stationary bike and start exercising again, which is sooner than I thought. He was basically of the mind, if it hurts don't do it. So tonite is an eggbeaters omelette with a little sour cream...gonna feel like a banquet. In two weeks I will actually start getting fish and moist chicken...I'm so on a roll  The hospital, bariatric clinic I go to is very very conservative but, hey, they're footing the bill. So I'll play. First fill will be first week of July!! Good luck to all and if you have doubts or fears, it's so worth it, even if you have a few bumps in the road at first. That will pass. Good luck to all upcoming banders Trisha pennreporter

  18. I'm in the very beginning stages. I was referred by my primary physician to the bariatric center for WLS. I'm in Orange County, Calif (Irvine area). I received a call a week ago from the bariatric department stating they approved me and will be mailing me a packet in snail mail. I haven't received anything yet - it's been over 7 days. Is there anyone out there from Orange County Calif that has used Kaiser? I'm curious about their process. I see a lot on here from Kaiser N. Calif and outlying areas but can't find anyone from Orange County. I'd like to hear from other Orange County, Kaiser, Sleevers. .

    October Surgery Dates

I am done 80 pounds, I need to beef up the proiten a bit more...Next Friday I get to go to my very first bariatric dance. I got my dress bought, gonna get my hair done...so excited....I will meet people in my area that have gone through the same things as me so it should be really fun!
  20. In reality MANY people regain a significant amount of the weight they lost after having bariatric surgery. Research at one north Carolina clinic found that 30% regain all the weight in 2-3 years.http://www.nawls.com/public/102.cfmhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24463895 Estimates run between 30- 60. And almost everyone weight fluctuates 3-5 throughout out the day, every day. Thanks for sharing. I think it's important for people to see these stats, but more importantly the data behind the stats....... " weight regain happens when patients eat high-calorie soft foods that easily pass through the opening to the stomach. Others gain weight because they do not change their eating habits and do not lose much weight to begin with. Successful results depend on the patients willingness to adopt a long-term plan of healthy eating and regular physical activity." Knowing this puts each of us in control of which side of the stats you end up on. Just like surgery is not the magic bullet for weightloss, statistics are not the magic formula for ultimate regain.
  21. I am only a bit over 9 months out, hit my goal weight in June, and in mid-July hit 135 lbs. Since then, my weight has fluctuated between 134 lbs - 136 lbs depending on the time of the month for me and if I've been overdoing the sodium. One of the things that has really helped me maintain my weight is following the eating guidelines given to me by my NUT and bariatric team. I've also become very active and am now part of a women's rugby league again, which is fantastic because rugby was something I had to give up when I became obese since I couldn't do it physically any longer. As a mortician (funeral director), my job does entail lifting quite a bit (caskets and human bodies can be quite heavy!), so that also helps me keep in shape and active, as morbid as it sounds. Overall, I think the combination of following the dietary guidelines I was given and being very physically active has really helped me maintain my weight loss. I don't plan on changing my eating or activity habits, so hopefully, I'll be stable where I am now for the foreseeable future. I am VERY happy here, as this is the weight I was before I gained over 100 pounds due to psychiatric medication, which is what started me on this path (I have severe schizoaffective disorder and was given Zyprexa, which pretty much made me gain 5 pounds the moment I filled the script, no joke). I'm now on a combination of weight-neutral medication that works for me with notes in both my physical and mental health files that I can no longer be put on any medications classified as weight-positive (THANK HEAVENS!). It's been a long, long journey so far...but I would do it again in a heartbeat!
  22. A few more studies... knowledge is power! http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20622654 http://www.thinnertimes.com/weight-loss-surgery/vertical-sleeve-gastrectomy/vertical-sleeve-gastrectomy-candidates/print.html As with any bariatric procedure, long-term weight regain can occur and, in the case of SG, this could be managed effectively with re-intervention. Informed consent for SG used as a primary procedure should be consistent with consent provided for other bariatric procedures and should include the risk of long-term weight gain. http://asmbs.org/2012/06/sleeve-gastrectomy-as-a-bariatric-procedure-update/
