  1. Try to avoid cough syrups with alcohol. Oh and no meds with aspirin or anti inflammatory medications. If your not sure, you can ask a pharmacist and they will know.

    December sleevers!

I am so sorry for your loss. It is a sad day when someone trying to improve her health doesn't make it. Words can't express. I was so afraid of WLS because of all the stories of people's passing. A young woman - 41 - I know died in her sleep 4 years after Gastric Bypass. It turns out she was type I diabetic and had become alcoholic - that is what really killed her, but it is still a very sobering thought because in a way it was related to her WLS.

    Liquor And The Lap Band

I'm not much of a drinker, but my surgeon sent me a book (written by Australian doctors) and they actually recommend a glass a wine per day! I have a glass of a really good red wine with a small amount of cheese 3 to 4 times per week. What a treat! As to party drinking, you may have to curb it (at least the amounts you described) while you are trying to lose weight. I'm sure your friends will understand and hopefully be supportive. When you get to your goal weight, then the maintainance diet will likely allow for more alcohol consumption.
  4. Ok so lets start with stats Heighest 270 Surgery: 238.1 Current 223.2 * I actually gained 4 lbs in 3 days* Height 5'7" So let me start off my saying... BLAH!!!!!!!! OK so here goes.. I thought I was doing really well.. I was going to the gym 5 days a week, staying motivated, drinking all my fluids, and trying my best to stay on the program.. Don't get me wrong im not perfect and I did cheat.. normally I don't regret it because I really work my butt off at the gym, but recently I think because I've been justifying my cheat with a "well ill just work extra hard at the gym" im actually seriously sabatoging my progress. Let me say though funny part is im not cheating my eating foods im not supposed to eat.. but because i work in a bar im having a drink instead.. SO NOT A GOOD THING as im only 3 weeks out of surgery. Why am I telling you this... BECAUSE I AM GOING TO HOLD MYSELF ACCOUNTABLE! Now here is the kicker... TODAY I WENT TO THE HOSPITAL FOR SEVERE ABDOMINAL PAIN ON THE LEFT SIDE... I was in the ER for 11 hours, and they still have absolutely no idea why i have this pain .. i don't honestly think its because of the alcohol, but it scared me enough to realize that even a small cheat can be DETRIMENTAL to my health. As of now i am still in a considerable amount of pain, docs did an iodine test to see if i have any leaks and a CT Scan, all which came back normal.. SO why the pain? If anyone has the answer to that... PLEASE LET ME KNOW. From now on though.. im stickin to the plan cuz one thing i do know.. even though the alcohol may not be causing my ab pain... It sure as hell is contributing to my WEIGHT GAIN! And it is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy to early to be gaining weight! I mean ive heard of the the 3 weeks stall... but the 3 week weight gain.. GET REAL! So here is my pledge.... I will abide by the rules, i will still hit the gym, and i will hold myself accountable!

    Liquor And The Lap Band

Go to d. Ozs show there should be a link from a christmas episode where the drink master had super low cal alcoholic drinks
  7. My tolerance has definitely dropped. I used to be able to drink 3 times as much to get as affected but now I'm a cheap date - 5 drinks and I'm done like dinner. I drank right through losing but I compensated - if I had a few drinks, I upped my workout to work it off over the next few days. Everything has a cost - alcohol is no different. In saying that, I lost consistently and got to goal in 7 months, despite my social drinking, and I still drink now, just a lot less than before, simply because it takes a lot less these days to affect me. And my drink of choice has always been vodka and pineapple juice - easy on the band and no hangover the next day. I generally don't tolerate beer too well because of the carbonation.

Does Anyone Else Eat Sugar Free Protein Bars?

Thanks Ready! That 27g of sugar alcohols was staring out at me like a red sore! So I've decided I'll do a half of one per day until they're gone. I've gotten so many good suggestions I'll just plan better the night prior. I appreciate your two cents. NEVER bossy! It's helpful!
  9. I have a group of friends who are 'party animals'. As an example we have a summer home, and individual guests will regularly bring a 40-pack of beer for a Saturday visit, or a 'handle' (a 750 ml) large bottle of (pick your hard stuff) and mixers. I am a Lap Band patient and admittedly party too, however knowing that my weight is health-affecting, need to slim down. I am trying to find an 'acceptable' alternative to significant beer and random liquor consumption. I have given up beer for the last 14 months and I came across conflicting anecdotes regarding vodka, which seems to be the low-calorie / lo carb drink of choice for Lap Banders - Vodka is the lowest calorie liquor and the best choice especially when combined with crystal lite Vodka has 7 calories per gram which is equivalent to lard or Crisco (pure fat) Vodka is made from various source materials (potatoes [carbs], grain ,other) In consulting my bariatric surgeon on which path to choose (band or bypass) he indicated if a patient took in the most calories from liquid sources (fraps, Soups, sauces, liquor (?)) he would recommend gastric bypass. I find myself drinking regularly to counteract work related stress, I am very highly compensated for my work (6+ figures / and have hit 7 figures) and need some stress relief - not interested in 'seek help' from other sources and reply’s (fyi)... I see gastric bypass patients losing 100+ pounds and am getting frustrated with limited weight loss which I m sure is affected by alcohol consumption. What are band patients doing (consuming / using) for alcohol consumption while trying to progress with weight loss???? Save the liquor soap box for your congregation – just answer the question pls… Thanks/ Banded Bob

Does Anyone Else Eat Sugar Free Protein Bars?

Way too high Sugar alcohol amount is 27 grams ; Carbs 32 grams(full day= less than 68 grams). You do sound very busy but try to find a better brand. Sorry if this sounds real bossy. We never read all the ingredients before, we have to now! How about a hard boiled egg, piece of chicken(3- 4oz.), greek yogurt with fresh fruit. Think protein, keep carbs low. Eat complex carbs.
  11. I did liquids for 1 week, mushy for 1 week then into regular solids and had no problem. I know more than a few people who have terrible trouble with even a little alcohol.

    Trading One Obsession For Another

During my preop testing my doctor warned that sometimes you trade addictions, and to be careful with alcohol and things like that. For me, I worked really hard and I can finally say that I have traded my food addiction for working out. YAY!! But I still have to try really hard not to shop too much. Especially since there are so many more cute things in a size 14/16 then in a size 26/28! I knew I would have to substitute the food for something healthy because I tend to have an addictive personality! UGH!!
  13. Seems a little early for solids, especially the ones you have eaten. I havent been banded yet, but my plan from my Dr is liquids week one, then alternating liquids and mushies week 2, then after that I believe it is full mushies...then week 4 is creeping back into solid foods...I know it is the holidays (or was) but try to keep in mind that your body is healing, and probably will be for some time. That being said, I have had instances where alcohol has given me some of the symptoms you listed (even without being banded), so maybe it was that...no alcohol for at least 6 months after surgery is what my doc recommends

    Alcohol After The Sleeve

I'm about 3 1/2 months out and have just recently begun mixing back in a little alcohol. Went to a football game last week and tailgated, probably had 4 drinks. Like Wishes said, there's definitely a different feeling, so be careful how much and how fast you drink.

    Alcohol After The Sleeve

There are several issues with alcohol, and different docs have differeing concerns about them. The basic initial concern is healing of the stomach, and that's where many docs come down to something around a three month limitation. Empty calories, too is a concern during the weight loss period, but that's no different than talking about Twinkies or any other kind of junk food. The biggie that some docs fret over is liver health - as obese patients, our livers are generally in pretty poor shape to begin with, and then they are further taxed with their role in metabolizing all of the fat that we are losing - they don't need any more stress from metabolizing the alcohol. So, that's where some docs come up with a no alcohol during the entire weight loss period policy - this is my doc's plan, and he's a bit more anal about liver health than most WLS docs as he also does liver transplants, and he doesn't want to see his bariatric patients coming back as transplant patients. The other concern is the prospect of transfer addiction - many of us were addicted to food, and with that taken away by the surgery, that addiction can be transferred to something else that was never a problem pre-op, like alcohol or gambling - so that is something to watch out for. The other thing to watch is that most find that their body's response has changed - usually feeling the alcohol's effects sooner and with less (things tend to go thru quicker, particularly liquids), but then they tend to recover quicker, too. Those are the major issues that influence the differerent surgeons' policies on alcohol and WLS, so take them for what you will. Overall, the occasional drink is not likely to be any more harmful than the occasional twinkie, but there are potential problems with it being a regular thing during the post-op period. Good luck, and may you have something to celebrate!

    Alcohol After The Sleeve

I nearly drunk a whole entire bottle of champagne on New Year's. Whoops.... and I have had quite a scotch whiskey's and bourbon's throughout the holiday season. You will probably be fine. I would ask your surgeon directly what he means with alcohol consumption if you are worried. However, it hits me like a fire truck and leaves me in two seconds flat. Just be aware, alcohol doesn't sit the same as it used to.

    Alcohol After The Sleeve

I guess this doesn't NEED to be in the Men Room, but here it goes... My doc told me no alcohol until 6 months after surgery. Then I told him i am taking the bar exam in February (3 months after surgery)... He said "Go ahead and drink after the bar! also, feel free to have that cigar you keep bugging me about." Now when he says I can have alcohol... Does he mean just wine? Or, will I be able to have some scotch with that cigar? What is the reasoning behind the alcohol statement? Is it too harsh on the wound area? Does it cause too much acid production? Too many empty calories?
  18. I had it done on the 16th and been regular foods for about a week or so. I just focused on eating healthy and Proteins. I was a little nervous but when I talked to my doctor she said if I can eat with out having any problems then go for it. I was worried I would do damage if I tested different things but she assured me I would be fine and so far I can eat about anything as long as it is chewed well. I had some steak and one bite of potato for new years and a couple non carbonated alcoholic drinks, I felt full after the steak, so the potato didn't really appeal to me. I also had some pulled pork and a little chili on yesterday. So far so good...I just love being full after eating a little bit. I see that ordering kids portions will have to be something to get used to when going out. I get my first fill today and she said I will notice a big difference in the amount of food I will be able to eat and start dropping weight more quickly. I am down 16 lbs since the 9th (pre-op diet) of Dec and I am pleased with that so far, so I look forward to what the fill does.
  19. I am not sure if it is okay but, honestly I would NOT do it. Along with other things Nyquil has a lot of alcohol in it and this early on you do not need that in your tummy. Think of it like a baby's tummy - it needs time. Have some chicken broth with some extra frest strained out garlic - that will help your cold Take care, Sandy
  20. I doubt very much that the alcohol has had any effect on your band. But drinking with a highly reduced food intake does cause the alcohol to effect you sooner than it would have done previously. Alcohol does irritate the stomach anyway so you may just be suffering the normal effects of over indulgence(have no idea how much you drank). I would just treat yourself gently for the next day or 2 and I am sure that you will be fine.
  21. I was banded Dec 2nd and I know I shouldn't have but I drank vodka on New Year's Eve. My stomach didn't hurt while I was drinking or really the next morning. But I have been getting sharp pains around the lap band and when I eat it burns. It feels like a combination of the inside of my stomach hurting and the stitches internally. Did I mess something up?? Was the alcohol to harsh for my new stomach? Will it go away? Anyone else had this experience?

I'm a drinker...BIG TIME I certainly cant drink as much as I could pre-op just because my stomach cant hold it. I was given the okay at about 8 weeks, and i've had no problems at all with alcohol... I dont even get drunk quickly like many people say they do (i didnt pre op either).
