My VSG surgery is approaching fast

I'm scheduled for VSG with Dr. Fernando Garcia, on October 18th, 2013 nerves are really getting the best of me. I'm so anxious, scared, and just feeling uneasy. I know I need this tool; because I have lost and gain weight over and over, but I haven't figured out how to keep it off. Currently, I have asthma, Hypertension (I developed PIH) during my last pregnancy and it decided to stay with me, Of course; on top of that I'm obese. I pray for longevity I want to raise my daughter, see her graduate high school and college, get married and have kids. Today, I noticed I was breathing so hard and I couldn't believe how exhausted I got trying to shop for clothes for my brother in laws' funeral. As scared as I am, I know this is the tool of choice for me; I have to lose this weight before I develop more comorbidities from being obese. I'm also going alone; because I don't really have a support person. People tend to judge and feel that you should just be able to lose the weight. If it was that easy; I wouldn't be fat in the first place. The time is gonna fly by.

    Orlistat/Xenical

I took Xenical a few years ago.I agree, why take it if you have to cut out ALL fats.I used low fat mayo and had to spend the day in the washroom! I could not cough, sneeze or laugh to hard because of the side effects. It was horrible and really took away from any quality of life. The band is really not a lazy way out.You can't just sit back and watch the pounds slide off.I have to work harder than ever to lose weight, by watching what kind of food I eat and motivating myself to exercise.I did nothing for the first year and lost only the initial "liquid diet after surgery'weight and that's all, about 10 pounds. Now after two fills and better food choices and exercise, things are slowing moving. I believe there is a thread that addresses this in alot more details.Good luck. C

    Orlistat/Xenical

Hi I know this is all about the lapband and this is something I am thinking very carefully about at the moment; reading, researching, etc. I am currently 262lb, and have lost (on this time around) the 14lb that was required of me before my doctor would help. So he's just put me on Orlistat, and I am wondering if anyone here has had any experience with this drug. I lost the 14lb doing WeightWatchers, and I'm thinking, if I did okay this far with no real problems doing WeightWatchers, why bother taking Orlistat? I know that I still want to go for the lapband, but I want to make sure I want to go through with it first and that it's not just (for me) a lazy way to get rid of my weight. I know I have to do it and it has to be now, but with Orlistat I am put off by the side effects. Do you think this is a necessary stepping stone to the lapband (if it doesnt work I mean)? If I'm cutting down on fat then I don't see the point of taking Orlistat... Any thoughts read with interest!

Just my humble opinion, but I'm convinced that surgeons who want patients to lose weight before surgery are assholes. (Am I allowed to say "assholes" here? NO? Okay.) I think doctors who insist on patients losing weight before surgery are exactly the same jerks who will be berating you for gaining (or not losing "enough") weight during the post-op phase and will have you begging for adjustments. AND, any moron knows that weight lost with those drugs is regained about 97% of the time, so what's the point? I know you have the national health service to deal with, but can you find another surgeon? Sue

    Not losing anymore weight

Hey there. I've been banded for two years (almost to the day). I've lost over 100 pounds but am still working on getting rid of some more! The only thing I can tell you is to watch what you eat and exercise. Same as anything else. If one thing doesn't work, try something different. If you're eating 1200 calories a day, sometimes bumping it up to 1300 does the trick. Or the opposite. It's something you have to play around with. Make sure you're eating in a healthy manner as much as possible. Track what you can. I used to hate counting calories but as my weight loss has slowed, I've had to pay more attention to what I'm putting into my mouth. Be careful with Protein shakes and Soups. While they have the protein you need, they won't necessarily make you feel full for long enough because they aren't going to sit in your pouch like solid food will. See if your next fill helps. Just be careful with it. You technically should be able to eat just about anything (just in smaller quantities). I do have trouble with most breads and a few veggies (mostly celery and brussels sprouts) but that's about it. You don't want to get too tight. I made that mistake at the beginning. Then I was going through a lot of slider foods and drinking my protein because I couldn't get healthy foods down. That's not a good place to be! Don't be afraid to speak up to your doctor when you go in as well. If your insurance will cover it, go back to the nutritionist that you did your initial pre-surgery stuff with to see if they have any advice. Good luck and be patient. Be flexible and try new things when others don't work. Switch up foods and exercise routines. Whatever you do, keep yourself motivated and on the right track.

    Did I lie?

Today at church a sister approached me and mentioned how good I look and that it looked like I had lost a lot of weight. Well, that made me feel so good! But then she and another sister asked me how I did it. Well, I told one person in my ward, but didn't really feel like I wanted to share with anyone as to getting surgery. I told them I did it with portion control and exercise, which is TRUE, but not TRUE. You know what I mean? Now I'm feeling really bad, like I lied. And at church! I don't know, maybe I just need to get over it... I mean, I didn't want to be rude, but I don't feel like telling anyone about the surgery.

    Did I lie?

I know think that you lied but why do you not want to tell people about the surgery? It is a tool to help you loose weight not the end all. I would have said that I had the lap band and with that and diet and exercise I have been able to to accomplish this. Only because of how many people dont think of surgery as an option. Just a thought. Hope you have a great day. Rebecca

    Bye bye band!

Sue, When I posted there, in 10/08 I had just gone through a frustrating 14 months of living with the band and having issues the main one never losing weight with it. It just wasn't the right procedure for me. I had it removed and lost a bit of weight at first because I could eat normal foods which included healthier ones. Since then I gained a lot of weight as my stomach went back to its old size again and I have since revised to RNY on 6/11. This time it's working and after about a week post-op the weight just started coming off. I can't eat like I used to and can't eat through the RNY like you can with the band. Once you're full, you're full! I know no WLS is perfect and they aren't always as effective as they were in the beginning but at least I can say I'm losing this time! Anyway good luck to you, you will make the decision that is right for you whether you're band-free and doing it on your own or you decide to revise to another procedure. Take care, Nancy.

    Yay! My Insurance Approved Me!

Who is doing your surgery? I am also in Idaho....have just over a month left on my pre-op diet.....not doing great....not gaining but not losing......still stuck in the I'll start tomorrow" cycle :-(
  11. Hi, I just passed my one year surgiversary and I wanted to offer up my thoughts on what this passed year has brought. My day of surgery weight was 285. My current weight is 138.5. I have read a lot of the forums and was surprised to see how many folks had regrets. I can honestly say I have none even though I had to have another surgery to fix an internal hernia and remove lesions. I feel blessed that I was given this tool, yes, it is only a tool. It is not a magical procedure that miraculously makes you thin and fixes all the problems in your life. Your struggle with obesity still continues long after surgery. The hard work really begins once you resume eating every day foods. I have not had soda (including diet), cakes, cookies, bread, pasta, potatoes, chips, any type of junk food, processed meats, etc since a month prior to my June 2016 surgery. Do I miss it? Not really as the trade off is much sweeter than any cookie. Instead of indulging in food, I can indulge in a smaller sized wardrobe. I do cook for my family and bake. I have become a master at washing my hands off as soon as I get icing, or cake batter or cookie dough on my fingers. I don't take tastes of these things either. I know it is a very slippery slope and these types of food are triggers to bad behavior for me. I struggle with the same bad habits that I had when I was heavier. These habits do not disappear with the rerouting of your internal plumbing. You have to look within yourself and decide what you want the outcome of this surgery to be. I wanted to be healthier and feel better about myself. I know that being happier about myself would spill over to family and friends. I am more confident about myself which has benefited me at work. If you are contemplating the surgery, go for it! If you are regretting the surgery, don't! Look at it as a gift that will keep on giving as you become healthier, more confident and ready to take on the world. This is a once in life time opportunity. Thank you.
  12. For maintenance, my losing lifestyle is what i adopted forever, nothing changed from when I was losing. My weight loss just petered out over time, in fact i eat less now than i was able to eat when i first began losing although i think over the ast two or three years, goods have become easier to eat and i get more variety now. I run for an hour several times a week, do a couple if rpm classes and to or three body pump classes a week - much MORE exercise than I did during the first year of my journey. None of this feels hard or like a diet, its just my life. I am five feet ten, 140lb, burn 600 or so calories a day with exercise and work as a teacher, so am on my feet all day. I have three kids aged 16, 14 and 9, so my "leisure" time is active too. Yet i gain if I eat more than 1800 calories a day, most often I sit at 1500. I definitely need my band. I may need it less if I were happy to weigh 160, but Im not.
  13. Hey there, I did the same thing as you I lost 20 pounds prior to the surgery doing the liquid diet then I lost another 20 after the surgery within the first six weeks...I was on cloud nine...I went for the fill and they gave it to me but it was against their advise they said you are losing let it go for a bit longer but I insisted and they finally agreed to a bit more but I could not keep anything down, I mean anything...I went back and had it lessened, I stayed like that for about two months and then went back and had more put in. They told me it takes time for your stomach to adjust to the fills so be patient and listen to them...they really know what they are doing. I am now down 59 pounds in just over a year...I still want to lose another 30 -40 pounds but I am extremely happy with the weight loss and listening to the professionals... take care and good luck

  15. Hello everyone here's my story!!! So I went to Mexico, TJ to have my gastric sleeve done on 2-23-2013. Was sleeved on the 23rd!! Yes same day as surgery! I will tell you I went to Dr. Fernando Gracia! The coordinator told me that the doctor said because my bmi isn't so high I can eat light the night before and drink till 8 am the day of surgery! Well well I ate only Grandma Cookies the day before! chocolate fudge ones and I sure enjoyed it。the day prior 2 that I only had Jamba Juice! I would've ate more but my friend that had the sleeve done two months before me suggested me not too! Advised if I wanted a smooth surgery to not eat! So let me tell you about the surgery.... i went under afternoon and was in my room about 2 hours later. i WON'T LIE THE FIRST NIGHT WAS A BIT PAINFUL.... PAINFUL AS IN SORE STOMACH AND FROM A 1 - 10 I WAS IN 4. SO IT IS PRETTY BARE-ABLE. I DIDN;T sleep WELL THAT NIGHT. MAJOR BOTHER OF MINE WAS THE IV..... OMG MY POOR RIGHT HAND WAS SO SWOLLEN WHEN I HAD LEFT THE HOSPITAL.... AND FOR ANOTHER 2 DAYS NOW IT IS JUST DIEING DOWN. WELL. SURGERY IN MEXICO TURNED OUT TO BE A LOT BETTER THAN I THOUGHT. THE GROUP THAT I WAS WITH WAS REAL SUPPORTIVE AS WELL. THROUGH OUT THE NIGHT THE NURSES WHERE CONSTANTLY GIVING ME MEDICATION SO I DON'T FEEL PAIN. Post op 5 days my sore ness is GONE! Well out of 100% its 30% around. I am actually feeling hungry more than anything. anyhow i will finish up my story in abit ----Major FEAR OF MINE IS HAVING A LEAK GOD FOR BID. Slow weight loss!

Try thinking of it this way - there is absolutely no doubt that as long as you follow the protocol as closely to the letter as you possibly can and stay active, you will lose weight. The laws of science and the universe cannot be denied. Sometimes you'll lose slowly. Sometimes you'll lose quickly. Sometimes you won't lose at all. But your plan of action is the same in all three cases. Follow the protocol and stay active. And of course I personally would add maintain a food log! Your goal is physical change but your challenge is mental discipline. You cannot directly control the path your weight loss will take. You can control your thoughts. Stay positive, stay patient, stay focused - persistence, along with absolute belief, can never be defeated. You're gonna love the new you!!

    Not losing anymore weight

Hello... I had my Lap Band surgery on 8-16-10 and lost 20 lbs within the first 3 months and I feel great, however, I have not lost anymore weight. I have had 3 fills since September and have very little restriction. I can actually eat whatever I want, as long as I chew it well. I have been following the SB diet, only using splenda if I need sweetness. And I keep active. My Dr advised me not to drink Protein shakes anymore as he feels they are additional calories that I don't need. I am going for another fill this week and this time I will ask how many cc's I have had so far. Is anyone else struggling after the Lap Band surgery?? I am getting very depressed, especially after reading other posts from people stating how much they have lost in the first 6 months. I would appreciate any suggestions/information that I could get.

    Just joined this site

:) well....this site seems to be the best info and honest feedback I've found. Seeing the nutritionist for initial consult next Tues. Then it's a 5% weight loss, about 12 lbs, and then make appt for doc. Let's hope my endoscopy and prelim tests all go well. Wish me luck that this is the start of a new life for me☆

    One Step At A Time...set my first mini-goal !

I attended my second coffee mtg. Friday night. I really connect with one of the ladies there and after describing my insatiable eating from 7-9 pm, she suggested I set a behavioral goal for myself - just one mind you so it is not too overwhelming and I can truly focus on it. So my behavioral goal for this month is not to eat after 7pm every night! I can have tea, water etc. but no food. This will be interesting. The weight goal I have for myself is to lose 8 lbs by the end of June. I have an 8 day business trip coming up so not sure if that will help or hinder but here goes...wish me luck!

    Going for unfill today.

I had to go for an unfill and he took 8 cc's to punish me for taking a whole cc. Now, I am hungry a lot so I am going back next Monday to get at least 4 cc's back in. A shake in the morning is good and I wish that is all I want but I have been wanting more. Good luck to you and hope that you can still loose the weight with the unfill. We sure went thru a lot just to get banded. Please don't take offense to this. Just wanted you to think about it. Judy
  22. I'm on a low carb diet as well currently eating below 20 net carbs per day (subtract fiber). Interestingly I did Atkins (not the induction plan but the on-going weight loss plan) for 2 years at one point and all of my chemistry and vitals improved (though they were in the normal range to begin with). Of course it was difficult to maintain and once off the wagon I regained all I had lost. With friends. The nice thing about the band, when I go off plan, I don't gain and so it's easier to get back on track because I don't have that discouragement of gaining 10 lbs in a weekend. LOL When I compared what I ate "normally" (choke choke) my fat intake actually went down low carbing. No fried cheese sticks, no bread to put butter on... you get the picture. And my Protein was about the same (pre-band Atkins). The only thing I try to avoid is sugar and simple/starchy carbs (white flour, potatoes, rice, pasta). I eat far more healthy veggies and I also eat regular dairy products (not low fat), eggs, berries, pumpkin, flax seed meal, and other lower carb items. Of course my portions are much smaller with the band, so that makes getting my protein in (recommended above 60 by my dietitian) a little tougher with my band. But the veggies seem to go down very well. I also take a daily Vitamin and Calcium supliment which I probably needed more when I was... ah hem, eating "normally." I don't like shakes or bars (flavor/texture thing). I will rarely drink a low carb slim fast for "emergency" situations, but I don't drink them on a daily or even weekly basis. I've drank maybe 4 in a year. Is my fat-to-carb ratio high? Yes, but if I were eating the same number of servings of starchy/sugary foods as I used to, the ratio would be very low, even with the reduced portion size. I have great labs, blood pressure is normal, sugar normal. And have all my life even at my heaviest. Let's not forget genetics. Moderation, moderation, moderation, it really is the key... If I could only follow that advice all the time.
