    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi there! I'm now a month and two days from my sleeve surgery on Feb. 1. It's been amazing to watch the pounds fall off - I'm down 25 pounds since surgery and 42 pounds since the start of my two-week pre-op diet. This week, I moved up from pureed foods to soft foods. That's *mostly* been a good experience, and I'm especially happy to have more variety in my diet now. The main challenge is that with soft foods, I find that chewing thoroughly and slowing down between bites is even more crucial than with pureed foods. I think due to stress and work busy-ness, I tend to be a fast eater. Well, I experienced the consequences of that today after eating some deli sliced turkey on saltine crackers at lunch - I ended up with severe chest pain and then had the dreaded foamies. So, I still have some adjusting to do as a result of the sleeve. Also, I'm so annoyed that I didn't take all of my measurements right before surgery. I ended up taking them a few weeks ago and again today, and it's great to see the inches come off. If you haven't yet gotten the tape measure out, I encourage you to do it! I hope everyone is doing well and recovering quickly from surgery.

After surgery am I doomed to a life of throwing up???

I’m 5 weeks out and the only thing that made me puke so far was taking my multivitamin on an empty pouch 🤷🏻‍♀️😂
  3. Hey Y'all! I'm having the SADI/SIPS (duodenal switch variant) on 4/4/22! It was originally scheduled for 2/28, but I couldn't get the cardiac clearance tests in time. So, next available was 4/4. I'm a bit bummed about how long I have to wait, but I've come to realize it is a great opportunity for me to practice all of the new habits I need to acquire - such as: sipping (I'm using a shot glass to drink water so that I know what a 'sip' feels like in my mouth.), eating itty bitty bites, exercising a bit, getting into taking the multivitamins routine, and testing different products for the clear liquid week following surgery, etc. Just by way of stats - 58 year old female Texan who needs to lose 140lbs.

    Weight Gain

My weight has “gone up” several times now since having had my surgery 5months ago. In fact this is the weirdest weight loss experience I’ve ever had in terms of predictability. It’s happened four times now where I get on the scale and “suddenly have lost” 5lbs “overnight”. Then two days later I’ll “gain 3lbs” that will remain stubborn for a week. Then after that week I’ll lose 4lbs within 4 days. Then “plateau” again for a couple days. Some days I’ll lose 1lb a day. Other days I’ve stalled for up to 4 weeks. My highest “gain” was 8lbs, which I “lost”within 3 days. There is absolutely no rhyme or reason to any of this. I follow my diet very very consistently. I could exercise more but I do move around a lot naturally due to where I live. My nut and doctor both agree it’s perfectly okay as long as the overall direction of the scale is to go down. I’m 5months post op and have lost 90lbs so (despite it still being super hard) I remind myself not to stress out over it. When the scale is giving me too much a headache I just stop stepping on it for some time. All that to say: dont stress out! You’re most likely doing everything perfect and your body is working hard! Good luck!

Welcome to the three week stall! It is probably the most discussed problem on this message board. Just keep doing what you know to do (follow your surgeon's dietary guidelines, keep walking) and it will work itself out. It is very frustrating when you are in the middle of it, but when the stall ends, you will lose weight FAST.

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

UPDATE: So I had my meeting with my dietician this morning. She said based on the log I provided her from the Baritastic app for the last two months she did NOT see that I was eating anything that I shouldn't or in quantities that I shouldn't. She still seems to think I was/am still being a little inconsistent when it comes to protein. She said that based on a few missing days and some days where it may have been lower. But I tried to tell her overall, I think I HAVE been pretty consistent regardless of those few days/logs. Anyway, she said at one time the 800 calories a day was probably good enough for me but now that I'm working out more regularly that maybe now I should up my calories and protein. Calories to around 1000 to 1100 and protein more than 80/90. I feel like she's guessing, in a way, on what could be wrong too because of the fact that she said she does not see anywhere in my food logs or workout routine where I'm doing anything wrong. She also mentioned body composition. She said maybe I have actually gained more lean muscle over fat and whatnot and that I should pay more attention to that. I told her I DO have a scale like that and, even though I weigh regularly, I DO NOT log the actual weigh ins unless there is a loss so I can't or haven't seen if there has indeed been a change because it doesn't log it on the app unless I allow it to. So, I need to start logging those slight gains too in order to MAYBE get a better idea of what is going on. My husband and I were talking last night and we still think that my cut in Metformin dose still may be playing a part in this long stall. I had my dose cut in September and October was my last real loss. Also the last time my period was normal. So, I brought that up to her and she doesn't seem to think that's the reason. She said it was right that my dose was cut because my sugars have been improving and warranted it. Like the doc said, she also said the weight loss itself could be causing the irregularity in period and stall. That there is no way to know for sure if it's due to the weight loss in general or the Metformin. But I don't know. Just awfully funny that it was cut down and suddenly I stop losing weight and my period has been jacked since too. Anyway, I think I'm gonna go back to my old dose for the next few weeks and see if anything changes. If it does I will then discuss that with my family doc who I see in two weeks. Because, if the scale starts moving again, then just maybe I need to go back on it for now. I know my goal and point of having the surgery was to GET OFF this medicine but who knows. Maybe I still need it for now. I still feel so confused. She said she understood but that I DO seem to be doing everything right and that I should stay the course. Anyway, that's that.

    Weight Gain

It is just water weight and your body adjusting to the lack of food. It is hoarding both water and calories for now. Keep the faith, it will start to come off. I know it is frustrating, it was that way for me too....it actually still is frustrating when I plateau for a week or two....I am down 93 pounds and I still get frustrated after 6 months. Hang in there.
  8. I had my surgery (sleeve) on 2/14 and recovery is going relatively smoothly. I’ve been following the dietitians guidelines and starting to walk 30 minutes a day. Over the last few days the scale has been going UP not DOWN 😫. Has anyone experienced this? My thought is that I didn’t get enough protein in the first week following surgery and my body is balancing that out. Thoughts?
  9. Its hard to make the decision to do this surgery until you know for a fact that you have to get it. I haven't had the easiest ride since surgery and there are a few more like me. For about 3 weeks after surgery, I had buyers remorse and I did buy it myself. Then things turned around a little and got better. I love my new stomach now, I love how little I am able to eat and am growing in confidence in the foods that I can try again. Take your time with the decision, you can always return later if the time is not right for you now. I would say though that you need to listen only to your inner voice. Your husband may be having second thoughts and passing these on to you. Take care and good luck

Update: I'll be on 2 weeks optifast starting Monday. Pre-op testing a week prior, then the green light. I'll have one week vacation followed by one week of computer-based training at work (as opppsed to field work), which is why I planned this when I did. Still pain at incision site

I'm sorry you're going through this for so long. You'll get varied responses here. I never had any pain and never took any of the pain medication. But others, obviously, have. It probably is "normal" like your surgeon said and if you need a pain pill, take one. It shouldn't be too terribly much longer before it settles down, like at the 4 week mark.

    Recovery time

For me its day 8 post op and I've noticed a huge pick up in energy levels. You'll be fine to live normally after a week with one caveat : if you deviate off the diet plan and are out and about you are not going to be in good shape. If you start dumping and are not home to lie down and rest you will not be able to function. So there is your choice, go back to work but take no chsnces with food. For me the golden ticket is fruit smoothie with protein powder. I've learnt my lesson Sent from my SM-G973F using BariatricPal mobile app

    Still pain at incision site

Hope you get some different responses to this I’m 3dsys post op and it’s definitely been a challenge can’t imagine 3 weeks.
  16. Hey everyone I was wondering how long everyone had pain at the site where they took the part of your stomach out. I’m now 3 weeks out and still having very sharp pain. I still cannot bend down or anything. Just hoping it will feel better soon. The doctor said it’s normal but I just want others opinions.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Good luck to everyone having surgery tomorrow! I've got my final pre-op with the surgeon tomorrow. I'm expecting to get my pre-surgery diet instructions. I'm not nervous... I'm anxious to get to surgery day. It's been a long 9 month process of jumping through hoops with very low expectations of insurance approving my revision. Now that they have, I just want to get on to the next stage. I am ready for this stage. I'm all in. It's hard because my partner is having a sleeve bypass 1 month after I have my revision and she's in a much different mindset than I am. She's like "after the liquid phase, well be able to have whatever we want, just a bite or two" and I'm like "nope, I'm making healthy choices, I've been through this before, it truly is just a tool that will help you start those healthy habits so they stick long term" My 50th birthday is two weeks after my surgery and she thinks I can have a bite of ice cream cake. I'm like, no. So we are having some of my favorite foods that she makes and my birthday cake Friday night. Still gonna have a bigger party actually on my birthday with family and friends but that's just to celebrate and the food won't be an issue for me. Wow lol that was a lot! I'm overdue for a session with my therapist. Lol
  18. It gets better and better! I was so excited when I went from a 2x to non-plus sizes and could shop anywhere instead of a few retailers. I am a couple of weeks shy of one year post-op (March 18) and down to my goal. I love clothes shopping now and proudly heading to the size small section! I went from an 18-20 to a 4-6. Enjoy your journey!!!

    Potatoes 5 weeks out

I’m 5 months out and occasionally il have a wee teaspoon of mash or three fries …. Alongside some protein and veg items. I never order it as it’s a waste just steal a little taste from my other halfs plate … it kills the craving and it doesn’t dominate my calories for the day ! Each to their own … find your path x
  20. P.S. just saw your last message. Zero hunger or appetite at three months out is normal. Vomiting everything solid that you eat is not. Call your clinic.
  21. check with your clinic. That could be symptomatic for a stricture, and you're still in the "window" for one (they almost always occur, when they're going to occur, between one and three months post-surgery (they're very rare after you hit the three month mark) they occur in about 5% of bypass patients. And they're an easy fix (I had two - at four weeks out and again at about eight weeks out)
  22. Thanks for the feedback. Yeah it doesn’t seem normal but I honestly don’t look up a lot of forums or ask for help. I like the weight falling off and amazingly I don’t really have a lack of energy despite never really eating anything. I work out at the gym three times a week. I mainly drink water through the day and one cup of oikos yogurt and that’s it
  23. I am almost three months postop and I have not been able to eat anything more than foods like yogurt or applesauce consistency. I have tried eating soft vegetables very well chewed up chicken tilapia etc and I throw up afterwards. Is this normal? I read about people eating eggs and soft foods but I can barely stomach a little yogurt or applesauce. I have my 3 month visit in less than two weeks any suggestions or thoughts on what I can do or say? Thanks

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi All, I have my surgery scheduled for March 15 and am about 2 weeks into my liquid+1 meal preop diet. But I'm struggling to lose weight even though I'm following the surgeon's guidelines. I'm super nervous they will postpone my surgery if I haven't met their weight loss goals for pre-op. Has this happened to anyone, any advice is welcomed?

    March surgery buddies

I started the second week of pre-op diet yesterday which means only liquids. It’s actually not that bad because I’m full of liquid all the time. My mind tries to tell me that I want something to eat, but I’m truly not stomach hungry. I guess that’s good since the post-op diet is liquids for awhile, too.
