    Overcoming The Addiction

Christina Rose, you are a beautiful girl (said in a totally platonic way, fyi!) and I love the ticker pic of you and your spouse/boyfriend. Congrats on your weight loss journey that is about to begin. You will have a rush of so many emotions, but it's exciting.. and scary. I am still trying to figure out how to eat now that I can and still not sure about it. I'm struggling this week, but it's a roller coaster some days. But I didn't gain all of this weight overnight, I sure am not going to learn to lose it nor lose it overnight either. Hang in there, sounds like you are off to a wonderful start! Sassygirl, hang in there yourself ok? You have done a wonderful job according to your ticker.... but I love what you said, it's totally true. No other addicts have to have their choice drug and 'get over it.' It's a hard struggle.... but we are all worth success. Hugs.
  2. Good morning good people. I am here because my sleeve is broken. I just don't want to get into too much detail to protect the innocent or anyone else, but lets just say in a Dr's Appt I had yesterday with my Bariatric Surgeon provided by my insurance and as we were going over slides of an upper GI I had a week prior... it seems my sleeve is way too big still and it is shaped like an hourglass. Also I have extremely bad reflux and it is causing me a whole lot of misery. My surgeon is referring me to have an upper scope done now, which will be photographic images of exactly what my stomach looks like from the inside, as well as to see if I might have a hernia to tend to. His precursory recommendation though is to revise to a gastric bypass since my reflux is so bad, and do any corrections and hernia repairs as necessary. So, I don't know if any of you know my story but I was banded in 2008. That's when the reflux started and my lapband caused me so much pain that I wanted it removed. My band surgeon was not helpful at all. I will just leave it as that so I was left to make my own decisions. I paid to have my lap band removed and revise to a gastric sleeve in 2010. I didn't know at the time that the gastric sleeve would just make my reflux worse, and believe me, had I known this I would've just gotten the bypass then. Anyhow, I just thought I'd start sharing my story here because it seems as though this is where I'll start to get my support now. Note that I am not upset or angry at anything that has happened or what will happen. It's just a part of my progression in my life. I will get through it, that's for darn sure. Thanks for listening. Irene

    Drinking Pains

Had the same thing, I think. VERY painful type cramping after drinking water. Doctor said I'd be fine but didn't have any advice/meds for me. The pain medication I was sent home with didn't alleviate this. Each day the pains came less often and less severe. But it took an entire week for it to completely go away. Nothing I did helped. For me it was just time, unfortunately.

12 Day Post Op Weight Loss

I usually try to avoid replying to these posts about weightloss just a couple days post op being too slow, but I think it's important people get a realistic picture and not just see posts from people with massive weight loss the first week or two. Yes, some people lose a lot the first two weeks, others, like me, don't lose anything the first two weeks. You are only 12 days out!!! You just had MAJOR surgery and your body is trying to heal - that is the only thing you should be focused on right now - healing. You were also pumped full of IV fluids in the hospital and likely weighed more at discharge than when you went in - it takes a while to clear that excess Fluid. Please try to avoid comparing weightloss to anyone - it is a recipe for dissappointment. There are a ton of factors that go into the rate at which we lose - gender (typically men lose faster than women), genetics, how much excess weight you have, how long you have been obese, how much you lost leading up to surgery etc etc etc. So forget about the scale for now, just focus on following your plan - getting your fluids and Protein in, walking etc - the weightloss will come - it will not be linear nor consistent, you will have many stalls along the way (and yes they ARE frustrating, but they end).

    Hair loss

Honestly? After talking to dozens and dozens of post-op bariatric surgery patients, it depends more on your genetics and your luck than anything. And I hate to say that. It's kind of like the loose skin issue. I wish I had a magical trick for the huge number of people that have asked me about my lack of hair loss and loose skin, but really - I got my protein in, I drank my water, I used bath and body works lotion a few times a week. 170 lbs lost, never lost any hair, barely any loose skin. I have no idea how, or why - neither does anyone else take your biotin, get your protein, drink your water - you could try to find some biotin shampoo! But honestly, I don't know if it makes that much difference. It seems that some people just lose the hair, and some don't. Good news? It will grow back!

    Traveling at 6wks out.

I was headed back to work at 6 weeks, would have much rather been going on vacation!! I was feeling great at that point. I actually could have gone back sooner but I liked having the extra time off to adjust to my life and everything. The fact that you are driving only a couple of hours and staying in house, you will do great. Just be prepared with all the stuff you will need and ENJOY your vacation!! Keep moving while you are there, it really makes you feel better. Good Luck with your journey!!

    Traveling at 6wks out.

you'll be fine. I traveled 22 hrs to get back and was out about 6 weeks as well. Make sure you have Protein powder in baggies, Blender Bottle, Protein Bars, empty Water bottle (to fill up on the plane) I'm not sure if you said you are traveling by plane or not, but I found ordering a diabetic meal (am diabetic as well) was a LOT better than eating the normal food because i had more protein and less carbs/bread like the chicken piece was a lot bigger and there was fruit instead of dessert etc. i found its easy at airports as well, can find chicken caesar salad anywhere and etc.....safe travels!

    Shingles

Did anyone get shingles a week before surgery? What did you take and what did you do? It's a mild case, but my surgery is in Mexico so I don't really want to reschedule. I starter valtrex the day it started with the faint looking bumps.
  10. What Protein shakes did you like? Which ones did you hate? I like the Muscle Milk and I just tried the Atkins shakes because I am getting board of the Muscle Milk. Any other suggestions? I am in my pre surgery 2 week liquid diet. Surgery Date: August 23 Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Hate eating

At this stage you should be 5 to 6 weeks out and on a pureed diet/soft foods. You should be measuring your food and be consuming 3 - 4 ounce increments in each sitting. I had surgery 4 months ago and I can only eat 2 ounces in each sitting, but I eat 4 - 5 times a day and smaller portions. I was sick and regurgitating all the time, because I was getting to full at 3 - 4 ounces of food. And what also helps me is that I eat with a baby spoon and fork so I know I'm not consuming to much at a time. It's just a lifestyle change you will get use to it, and just try to eat slow and maybe start at 2 ounces, your body will let you know when you can consume more or need to back off. It gets better:)
  12. Cheer up! At 18 days I had only lost 16 lbs and then I didn't lose anymore until I was 6 weeks post-op. I then lost 6 lbs. I was getting in all of my protein & fluids in by 2 weeks. You might have stalls, but keep eating & drinking right & they will break:)

    I Messed Up

If you haven't already gotten sick from eating the potato chips, then you probably won't. That is NOT license to eat all the chips you want. Are you back on soft solids yet according to your dietary plan? If not, NIX the chips until you're back on solids. Once you're on solids, it's okay to have a chip here and there, just don't let it become an every day or every week thing. The goal (for me) is to eventually eat like a normal person. I'll always have to do my Protein and Water, but I want to be able to incorporate things like a few bites of birthday cake or a small serving of potato chips into my diet. I am NOT on a diet; I'm working on lifestyle changes. The only thing I've found so far that I flat cannot have in my house is cheetos. Baked cheetos are from the devil, IMO and they cannot come into my house because they sit in my pantry and call my name "Lissa, Lissa"! LOL
  14. I can't believe that today is the first my surgery is in four days June 5th I start a new life a new beginning a new hope Yes to a better healthier me but also to look skinnier me ???? I sit here and think i can't wait to all those that called me fat . ( Funny how it always comes out in an Argument ) I can't wait to stop hearing those mean things that people say at the gym the looks that I get when I go out to eat with my family. I can't wait to be able to sit in the booth and not worry if it's going to be hard for me to breathe. Here's to a new beginning!!???????????????????????????????????????????????? I know I may not know anyone on here but I thank you so much for keeping me strong during this 2 week Pre-Op diet on all the advice on here and all the compliments that are paid to everyone else you guys have been a strong strong support group for me
  15. Keep calm and carry on. Make a deal with yourself - no scale for 4 days. Stalls are nothing.... just dust in the wind Chell it is the long haul that matters. Just remember poo weight is huge in this stage. It will be a while before you can count on your digestive system again. I remember having stalls that resolved themselves with stool softener.

    Waiting

Have you called them? I would follow up. I finished all my stuff and was waiting on insurance and when I talked to them they were like oh yeah we'll get that today or next week. Sometimes they just need a gental nudge and reminder you're a person and not just a bunch of words and numbers on paper. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app
  17. Im doing better now that I'm in week two. I get a few gas bubbles because I forget I can't gulp water or whatever I'm drinking at the time. I haven't had nausea at all during this whole new life change which is surprising. Hopefully yours will stop soon it gets easier, I think when day 7 came everything seemed to be a lot better! I figured I needed more protein because my body was so week, my friend and I both got some protein shakes so we did that one day and felt soooo much better. And getting to have a few bites of yogurt was a nice change! Things are finally starting to get better!

The harder the cheese... the more protein. An easy way to get protein in with lots of flavor. I have it about once a week it is high in fat.

I'm on day three and have terrible diarrhea as well, I wonder if there is something we can take for it?

    Scared to death!

Week 1 Clear Liquids, weeks 2 and 3 full liquids(milk skim 1%,Protein shakes, yogurt drink, juice low sugar, flavored Water etc) week 4 soft foods( cottage cheese, apple sauce, yogurt, boiled eggs ect) after that you can eat everything in 4 oz measurements. stop when you are full, eat slowly , chew like you have never chewed before LOL this is what my doc ordered. I do agree its too early to eat chicken and potatoes at 2 weeks. I followed this and lost 24 pounds the first month. Dont beat your self up about it start fresh tomorrow I can post the complete list for you if you like he gave me a book that he wrote about the sleeve

    Newbie

The first 3 weeks at home was hard for me. Extremely hard. Try to keep in mind what your surgeon said. It will get better in time for sure. It is tough in the beginning however the first thing you want to do is to keep yourself hydrated. Drinking your Protein and Water is more than enough for now. Trust me. If you can't get to your protein goal each day, be sure to hit your Fluid goals for sure. Oh I forgot to mention, I had the gastric sleeve done May 27th, 2016 I'm down 100lbs even at the moment. Hi, from Teresa!

supposed to be clear liquids x2 weeks, full liquids x2 weeks, then mushies/puree but I was doing so well he moved me up to mushies early. So far I am tolerating it but have to go really slow or I get so stuffed I'm really uncomfortable on just alittle tiny amt.

    4 months post op

My first stall hit at 2 weeks post op and lasted about a month. Stalls are a normal part of the process. If the scale is making you crazy, stay off of it. Follow the plan. Trust the process. You'll be fine. The pattern that my body seems to have settled into is, I lose about 3 pounds. Stall for a couple of weeks. Gain back 2 pounds. And then stall for a week. And then it starts all over again. I'm losing on average of about a pound a week. So the scale is going down, but not without going up first. Your body is going to do what your body is going to do. If you're eating in a calorie deficit, you're going to lose weight.
  24. I think I need to stop the once a week weigh in and go to once a month.
