    Not Enough Protein :-(

Oh no! I just ordered the unflavored unjury and the chocolate one. I drink mostly crystal light and was wondering if I could pour it in that. I'm gonna try pouring it in things like yogurt, pudding and creamy chicken soup to ass some more protein. I should have ordered it sooner, I've been barely able to get one atkins shake down  Hopefully I'll start feeling even better once i can get more protein in.
  2. Hello all! It has now been 12 days since I had my laparoscopic gastric sleeve done, and each day I'm getting healthier. Still have an issue with internal pain on the right side, and one of incisions on the right got infected, so my GP prescribed Cephalexin 4x daily. The pill is the size of a horse and smells horrible. Thank goodness I can snap it in half - only was I can take it. I weighed myself this morning and it looks like I'm at 280 lbs. My pre-surgery weight on April 1 was 334 lbs. Not sure how accurate that is given they are two different scales so will hold off doing the happy dance until my clinic appointment for weigh in on the more accurate scale to see exactly where I'm at. food wise, week 1 and most of 2, I subsisted on Greek yogurt (Oikos vanilla, lime, honey), Hunts chocolate pudding cups, and Ensure High Protein. I tried Heinz baby food (prunes and sweet potato) as well as Campbell's ready to serve cream Soups, but I was just not a fan after one serving. The soups (butternut squash, cream of asparagus with basil, and roasted cream of potato with leeks) all tasted the same. The baby food helped, but in the back of my head it was still baby food and I just couldn't go past that. The food bank will be happy, I've got a bunch of stuff heading their way! April 29, I thought I was far enough along that I could have something soft and went for brunch with a friend. Ordered salmon with mashed potatoes. Boy was that ever a big mistake! It came with a side of toasted French bread. I thought if I chewed the bread to paste consistency I'd be okay. Ya. No. That minuscule amount of bread went down like cement and I was in pain for close to 30 mins. I managed to eat a little mashed potato, but again, did not sit well. Yes, I acknowledge that I'm a moron who should have waited another week before making even the mash potato attempt! May 1, I was able to eat the 85g Cloverleaf Flaked Light Tuna Lemon Pepper. Chewing slowly and eating half a teaspoon at a time. May 2, I scrambled one egg with some milk and didn't have a problem eating it. For lunch, I tried eating a couple of Premium saltine crackers with 85g of Cloverleaf Flaked Light Tuna Dill and Lemon. The crackers did not go down well. Similar reaction as the toast, not as painful, but uncomfortable nonetheless. Later, as a snack, I tried (and finished) a cup of chocolate Cheerios. Went down just fine and no pain. It took me a good half hour or so to finish... But who'd have thought? I think I'll try a cup for Breakfast tomorrow! I'm suppose to "officially" start the soft foods part on Monday and am looking forward to making homemade chilli and guacamole. Has anyone had any problems with either? I've been trying to get to my Calcium and protein goals each day, but it's bloody hard! Today I finally hit my calcium goal, but was still out by 11g for my protein. How's everyone else who was sleeved around the same time as me doing? Cheers! Mercedes
  3. Tomorrow is the big day. I have been on my liquid diet for four days. Today has been the easiet day so far. I am actually pretty lucky because I can have yogurt/apple sauce/pudding. all of them have to be sugar free or fat free. It has not been so bad. The first day was the worse. I knew it was bad when I was sitting my pantry contemplating sucking on a cracker. Anyways, my surgery is tomorrow at 2:45 p.m. Starting to feel the butterflies.....so everyone say a little prayer or cross your fingers that everything goes okay!!!

    Pre-op advice

Advice coming here from someone 14 months post-op at goal weight. I'm trying to remember back to those first few months post-surgery! I stocked up on a bunch of supplies pre-surgery and didn't end up using 99% of them post-surgery. I just cleaned out my cubbords and threw out a bunch of soup and protein powders I never used because I couldn't stand them post-surgery. Others I tolerated before hand but post-surgery we can only eat so little that I wasn't willing to sacrifice taste for a few bites of anything. In other words, I typically opted for the full-fat cottage cheese vs. fat-free cottage cheese. To get specific - a lot of people recommend those torani sugar-free flavored syrups. I purchased 8 and never found a use for them. Adding them to cottage cheese and yogurt was just... Runny and gross. The idea of drinking chicken/beef broth pre-surgery sounded far from appealing so things didn't change post-surgery. I bought two containers of uninjury chicken broth I used one scoop out of. I would say gravitate toward things you know you love. Right after surgery, I ate jello and protein drinks. I made jello in small individual sized Tupperware containers where I added "unflavored" uninjury protein. Premiere protein drinks have 30 grams of protein. I used to get them at Costco but my local store doesn't carry them anymore. Keep in mind that blending protein shakes with ice in a blender with a bunch of extras is a big no-no after surgery. It will make too much liquid for you to consume and add air bubbles you don't want. I'm mentioning this because there was a high-protein power I could tolerate pre-surgery if I added ice, 1/2 banana and powdered peanut butter. Post surgery it tasted gross in a shaker bottle. Cottage cheese was another staple to have and any soup you know you like. A blender is handy to purée any chunks down. A food scale is handy to have down the road. The supply I found the most helpful to have is those small Dixie cups people often have in their bathrooms. They are the perfect size to measure out food right after surgery and will keep you from having to wash endless dishes for a tiny spoonful of food!!!!!

Just got approved for the sleeve

congrats Lauren and good luck. For me after surgery I had my protein shakes on hand, sugar free jello, pudding, Popsicles. Soup and yogurt. Also I dealt with bad knee pain and since my surgery 6/18 and losing 27 lbs what a difference. And boy it feels good.
  6. Thanksgiving day I will progress to pureed foods. I am very excited about that. I am preparing some dishes that I can freeze in 3 oz quntities. Will make it easier during the week whe I go to work. This coming week I only work Monday and will be off the rest of the week. My brother lives in NY while I live in PA. Tuesday I will pack up and stay with his family for the week. I was trying to work on a menu for myself for the week. Well today my sister in law called to tell me she spent a few hours on the net yesterday looking up blogs from sleevers to get ideas of what I will be able to eat. She told me she went shopping and picked up SF pudding, greek yogurt, tuna, canned chicken and is making a pot of fat free refried Beans. She also has squash, carrots, and green beans. She was so excited shopping for this stage of my diet for me. She even picked up SF ice pops. She said, just bring your shakes if you need them and your Vitamins, we are all set here for you! I cant express how much I love her. She is such a caring and wonderful person and my brother made a phenomenal choice in his life partner. This thanksgiving is going to be so exciting because for the first time in forever, i will not stuff myself like the turkey! It will be about family and enjoying company more than anything. My brother then told me when dessert is served, that he will go for a walk with me so the temptation wont pose a problem. I am really blessed. Truly truly blessed. So excited for this next phase!!

Eyes Way To Big Still !

I am in the car traveling for work a lot too. I have gone through the McDonald's drive through for their yogurt parfait, which is under 200 calories. I also stop by convenience stores and get a Muscle Milk Light if they have one. As a stand-by, I always keep a few sample Protein powder packets and a mixing cup with the mixing ball in my car. I can stop at the convenience store and get Water and ice, then mix a Protein shake on the go. You can also carry Ostrim with you in your car. High protein, low fat, not too many calories.
  8. I love Cereal! Some are good some are evil. I guess when it comes to eternal life it's stuck somewhere in the middle. I'm not talking about hot cereals or oatmeal. I'm talking about Corn Flakes, Cheerios, etc. These things can be hit or miss I'm finding. But if you pick out the good ones, you can get satiety for hours and get some good wholesome grains, Fiber and Protein from the milk. Calories really aren't that bad either for the hours and protein you get in exchange. But... there are some cereals out there that taste great and tout low calories and health and whatnot. The problem is these same cereals will have me ravenous only barely an hour later! Not good so... I have a little list going in my head here. First for the goods: I have Shredded Wheat. Yum! I love the flavors, and yes I do eat the frosted. So what? It tastes good. I guess I could just buy plain and put splenda, but I like the crunch of the frost. It cures that sweet tooth of mine too. Whatever, but it does last in my belly a good while. Sticks to the ribs if you will. Next I noticed that Cheerios does a good job with lasting too. However not as long as SW, but good enough for an honorable mention. I prefer their flavored varieties rather than the plain, but plain rocks too. Raisin Bran or Raisin Bran Crunch. Of course the plain is much better for you than the RBC. The Crunch is loaded with Sugar and more calories than probably what we should be eating for a small bowl of Cereal. I do avoid this cereal but sometimes its a good burst of flavor when looking for something sweet. Sure beats ice-cream! Anyway for my good list that's all I have for now. I need to venture out! Bad list: Any Special K. Low in Calories? Yes. Lots of Vitamins and things our body needs? Yes. Healty option? Yes. Satiety? Yeah, well that gets a big fat resounding NO!! I'm hungry and hour after eating a bowl. The bad thing is they make some great flavors! Even the plain to me has a good flavor. I especially love the Fruit & Yogurt. This one does last a bit longer than an hour but not much more. Kellogg's Corn Flakes. Again, my body burns this like a flame sweeping through the Sierras! I cannot eat because the flavor makes me sick: Anything Kashi. Period. Tried it, hated it. I thought I was eating the cardboard leftover from my last move. Some like it, I don't. End of story. So any ideas on what I can try? I'd love any suggestions! I've found that adding a bowl at least five days out of the week has helped my regularity, and I'd enjoy trying some new flavors.
  9. Today is 10 days post op. I had no problem drinking after surgery, but was very hungry, infact I could gulp after a couple of days. Just keep on sipping. My doc also aloud fruit juice as long as it did not have added sugar and at costco my wife found otter pops that were straight fruit juice. They are tasty. At my one week post op visit my doc made it very clear to not worry about calories ,but concentrate on staying hydrated. Onday 4 I started eating pureed Soup and yogurt through out the day , but my caloric intake is still well below a 1000 a day plus I make sure to get my 10,000 steps in each day. I have yet to realy feel a restriction. This is because fluids go right through me. Apparently, once on solid food the restriction will kick in. Total weight loss in 3 weeks ( pre op liquid diet) I am down 32 lbs and dropping. I am also starting to feel the benifits, BP is normal and blood sugar is great. My energy level is fairly good, but I do need a good nap evey couple of days. The sleep I am getting is the best for a long time.

    strugling 2yrs after surgery

I am doing a protien shake in the AM switching off with greek yogurt and fruit . Lunch I make on Sunday so I can bring it to work and not get stuck looking for something, which is turkey chili, or turkey taco minus the shell. Deli meat with cheese. Then dinner will be fish or chicken. What are you eating?
  11. I am 8 weeks post op from my RNY. The first 3 weeks were brutal, however, sooooo worth it :-). So far I have lost 40 pounds and for the past two weeks I have been going to the gym everyday during lunch and every day during the weekend. I'll either take a zumba, boxing, cycling or aqua workout class. Also, now that I can eat more I consume a lot of grains, yogurt and tofu. I have cut meat out of my life. I am so happy with my results and cannot wait to keep going.

    Stand Still

Manningkimball, Weight loss surgery is a weight loss tool, much like your calorie count book, food scale and exercise. It is suggested by my Bariatric Clinic that I keep my Breakfast between 100 and 200 calories, morning snack, 100 calories, lunch 100 to 200 calories, afternoon snack, 100 calories and dinner between 100 to 200 calories. That is a total of 800 calories. Between this and daily exercise you should continue to lose weight (hopefully). It is natural to have plateaus I was told, but I know how discouraging they can be. I will NOT drink my calories. I want to chew. I was told also, if I comsume too many carbs I would not lose weight as fast. Carbs such as bread, Cereal, crackers, chips, etc are last on my list. Protein is the first thing. But my Snacks are fruits such as bananas, apples, squash with no calorie sweetener, or 80 calorie yogurt, etc. You can do this, do not despair!!!! Good luck, DeeJay

    7 Days to go!!!!

Everyone on this site can relate! It's the hardest part of the process. My doctor allowed pureed soups, low fat yogurt, sugar free ice pops, fruit smoothies and sugar free jello. Good luck!
  14. I'm in my six week out and I usually get 50-60 grams of protein daily all from food sources. I do not like the powders or liquid additives. I mostly eat shrimp tuna fish chicken or soft roast beef. I eat yogurt, cottage cheese and still some chicken baby food. I'm so busy rating these things that i can't eat any vegetables or other things. I'm still stuffed after 3-4 ozs. I average around 500 calories a day and usually burn 200/300 with exercise daily. I walk 1-2 miles a day. Fluid has been a real burden I'm not much of a drinker so I get about 24-32 oz daily. At four weeks I had lost 35 lbs I don't feel like I've lost hardly anymore the last couple weeks since kicking up the exercise but I haven't weighed just my clothes don't seem to fit differently. Hoping its just some PMS bloating!

    Frozen yorgurt

If by "frozen yogurt" you mean plain (unsweetened) yogurt (greek or otherwise), I'd think that would be doable. If by "frozen yogurt" you mean something that comes in a container in the frozen food section of your grocery store, I'd say it's unlikely you'll find an option that's not far too high in sugar to be a good choice. I've made my own "soft serve"-like concoction, using a small blender, almond milk, ice, and Protein powder. I don't usually use yogurt because it gives the whole thing a tangy-ness I don't care for, but it would thicken it up. That's not always a good thing when you're really early post-op, though. Thicker shakes can be harder to get through your tiny sleeve in the first weeks when you're still swollen and healing.

    Frozen yorgurt

There are practically NO yogurts beside the plain unsweetened that would be appropriate to use post op. They all contain too many carbs and sugar. The plain greek yogurt is allowed but i find it to be more on the sour side like sour creme. I had to add Stevia to it and sugar free Jello to be able to eat it. The only one I could find that was not so high in Carbs was the Light and Fit brand of Greek Yoghurt by Dannon but not the one in the big containers but the individual containers or i serving size has about 7 grams of Carbs. I tried the strawberry and the vanilla is excellent. You could add flavorings in the mixture when you blend it. I'd add just a little milk to it but not too much to make it watery then freeze it. Take it out of the freezer after frozen then let it thaw just a bit to be able to get it out of the carton then put in blender and whip it up. It does taste good like frozen youghurt.... You WON'T find ANY ready made frozen yoghurt that is Not hight in sugar and carbs. I guess you could try the plain regular low fat yoghurt and it wouldn't be as sour and add your own sugar free flavors to it. Check online for the NOW brands of little bottles of all sorts of flavorings to add to anything and it's all low carb and low calorie and sweetened with stevia only. I am going to order some from the i herb website for natural foods. they come inall sorts of interesting flavors like pineapple, orange, strawberry, mango, blueberry, blackberry etc..... Enjoy!!!!
  18. Has anybody used frozen yogurt in a protein shake? Never done it but looking to spice it up.

    gastric sleeve

Welcome! Focus on trying to stay hydrated and follow the program your doctor gave you and you will be fine. Miy program was 2 weeks of full liquids after surgery. It was easy most days. The hardest thing for me was that it was cold outside so I got tired of all the cold drinks and yogurt. Soup was my best friend!

    Hope I Haven't Goofed!

I am on a very hard pre diet. All liquids, no meat, cheese, sugar, fruits or veggies. I can have diet juices and grits, frozen lowfat yogurt, sherbert, pudding and Jello and I can have lowfat broth (Yuk) not much I like on there but I have been following it as close as possible and in 3 days have lost 4.8 pounds of what is probably Water weight. I've dranks lots of water mixed with propel and cran-grape. Here is the problem last night I realized that my cran grape juice is the lite and not diet. It only has 50 calories and no fat but has 10% sugar!!! Now I'm freaking out worried I have messed up everything due to my enlarged liver I'm really nervous and want to do everything right. Here is a copy of the nutrition amounts, the carbs & sugar scare me! Nutrition Facts Serving Size 8 oz. Has anyone been "preparing"?

every since i had to do six months dietian classes. the first three months i.ve lost nothing but when she said you have to prove to them you can lose the weight i got going now as of sept3 i,ve lost 27lbs on my own.at first i was slacking she told me the kind of foods to eat but i went out an bought me chicken b&beef broth, dannon light&fit yogurt, sugarfree jello, eas drinks, crystal light.an i started exercising on my stationary bike for thirty minutes.a day.
  23. I'm currently on full liquids and I've gotten tired of eating my Soups out of a can so today, finally feeling well enough I decided to cook my own Soup. I used things I had on hand and this tuned out DELISH!! Its a little carby but I was lacking in Protein and this was a good protein recipie. 1 chicken breast 4 cups chicken stock 1 chicken bullion 1 can northern white Beans ¼ cup chopped parsley 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp curry powder ¼ cup greek yogurt 1/4 cup of milk I didn't realize it would make as much as it did, I'm still getting used to small servings lol. Next time I think I'll use more chicken breast considering how many servings to get the protein a bit higher. It made me 7 1/2 cup servings Cut up chicken in cubes, put in stock and bring to a boil with the white beas, bullion, parsley, garlic and curry powder. Let boil. Once boiled and chicken is cooked puree in a blender. If you're not on liquids anymore I suggest pureeing only hald and leaving the other half chunky! But was delish all smooth! Put back in pot, return to heat and stir in milk and greek yogurt. Heat until smooth and creamy and you're done! Banded and very very sore...

Congrats, Welcome to band land. I was banded on Sept 23. Tomorrow will be 7 days. I came back to work today and am doing well. The soarness has gone and now I just feel a little discomfort at my port site when I turn or sit in an odd position. Starting to get my appetite back which is weird because I don't really have much restriction. My doctor is requiring me to have liquids and yogurt for 21 days. Then I can go to soft food. I am coutning the days. Good Luck

    Greek Yogurt weird question

I have this weird texture issue thing where I can't even look at the Water that forms at the top of sour cream (gagging just thinking about it). The Greek yogurts I have bought have all had this same water substance on top. Does anyone know of a brand that doesn't separate like this?
