  1. Hi all. So I've spoken with 3 people I know that have had gastric bypass and they said that they did not exercise at all and still lost weight. One of them lost 80 pounds in 10 months. Why do sleevers have to exercise to lose? What is the difference between the two? Not making excuses, just want to know why?

    Sleeve vs. Bypass

Studies show that weight loss is more rapid with bypass in the first year, however, by year two, weight loss from the sleeve is the same as bypass. As OutsideMatchInside said, weight loss is 80% diet and 20% exercise. Once you've reached your weight loss goal, those numbers flip when you go into maintenance mode. Here's something I've heard from weight loss veterans...If you think losing the weight is hard, get ready. Maintenance is 10X harder.
  3. From your most recent post it sounds like you now have the information needed, but I'll copy and paste below what Tijuana Bariatrics sent me last year (it could have since been updated) in case anyone else is seeking it: Pre-Op Instructions Gastric Sleeve, Plication and Lap Band Use any prepared canned or powdered Protein drink. You may purchase these in any health food store or many grocery stores. Please be sure it contains at least 15 grams of protein per serving. 1 Protein Drink at Breakfast 1 protein drink at lunch Dinner: salad with Protein (chicken, fish, egg, etc), small amount of low fat dressing, or fat free dressing or olive oil and vinegar. 1 protein drink in the evening if needed You may also take 1 Metamucil capsule per day if needed for hunger. Start this phase the day before surgery: Do a light breakfast the day prior to surgery and take only Clear liquids after that. This consists of broth, Jell-o, sugar-free juice, any clear liquid You may have nothing to eat or drink after the midnight preceding surgery or 8 hours prior to it. If you are a Same Day Surgery arrive with an empty stomach and wear compression stockings during your trip. You may take needed medications (such as heart or blood pressure medications) with sips of Water the morning of surgery as directed by our Doctors. Do not take any aspirin, Advil, Nuprin, Aleve or any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication for 7 days prior to surgery. These medications cause unnecessary bleeding after surgery. This includes baby aspirin and most arthritis medications. If you are not sure, please check with our Doctors.. For headache or minor pains you may use Tylenol. You may restart these medications the next day after surgery. Do not take any herbal medications for 7 days prior to surgery. Bring comfortable shoes and slippers to Mexico, you will be asked to walk several times per day. Please bring your medications in properly labeled pharmaceutical bottles for documentation of dosages. You will be on a liquid and soft food diet for two weeks after surgery. Stock up on sugar-free liquids: Crystal Light, sugar free fruit juices, apple sauce, yogurt, sugar-free pudding, sugar-free jell-o, thin Soups and caffeine-free teas. If you do not like the flavor of chicken broth, make chicken noodle Soup and strain out the solids. Avoid all carbonated beverages (fills the stomach with gas). Avoid sugar (extra calories that fight against weight loss). Caffeine makes you urinate more and can lead to dehydration. You will need to drink plenty of liquids to prevent dehydration after surgery. Sport drink bottles with measurements on the side will help ensure you are drinking enough liquid. You will need to drink at least two quarts (2,000cc) per day to prevent dehydration. You will not be able to gulp liquids so you will want to drink small amounts throughout the day. RNY/Bypass, Mini Bypass and DS Start this phase 2 days before surgery: Take a laxative (any laxative that you usually use). Take only clear liquids after that. This consists of broth, Jell-o, sugar-free juice, Gatorade and any clear liquid. You may have nothing to drink after the midnight preceding surgery or 8 hours prior to your surgery. If you are a Same Day Surgery arrive on an empty stomach and wear compression stockings. *Please follow the pre-op diet as instructed below 1. BMI’s 30 to 31 no diet-only clears liquids the day prior to surgery 2.-BMI's 32 to 39 - 7 days 3.-BMI's 40 to 49- 10 days 4.- BMI's 50 to 59- 14 days 5.- BMI's 60 to 69- 21 days 6.-BMI's 70 and over- 1 month
  4. Today I am 25 days post op! Yes! I have most certainly struggled the first 2 weeks and today I think I made ground breaking progress for the first time in my life!!!! My body image and looks have always been a concern my entire life. I was pushed into modelling as a child and then came all the food issues and insecurities. It wasn't until I had paid modelling jobs that my weight became an issue. I was never fat but athletic and it wasn't until the company I was doing catalog work for as a child stopped calling me back for more work. My mother told me that it must have been because I looked fat in the last catalogue and if I would stop eating junk food I wouldn't have been "sacked" from my job. i was 12 years Old! Being told not to have any treats ever whilst my 3 siblings did I felt punished. I have had the most unhealthy relationship with food because of this. Because I felt like I was missing out, and I was not allowed to eat junk of any kind, I did it in secret and felt better about the fact I wasn't missing out and felt joy and happiness comforting my self. This made me into the emotional closet eater I am today.. Well not today but until a few weeks ago and I had this operation that changed my life and I know it's just the beginning. I have had the most unhealthy relationship with food... and it wasn't until 25 days ago did I break up with it. Feeling full makes me content.. That's the feeling food has always given me.. No matter what the emotion, food has been there for me. Tonight I had my family order gourmet pizza. I had 1 piece and that was it. I didn't eat the base.. just the topping. (Spinach feta pumpkin and garlic). This may sound insignificant to everyone else but my band made me feel full and food has not been an obsession or a comfort any more!!! I would have comsumed 3/4 of a pizza before this op. Food is a source of fuel and consumed for a purpose. i now Eat to live as apposed to live to eat! Thanks to my new accessory (my belly bangle lol) I have lost that emotional attachment to food. I feel like I have control for the first time in my life! Loosing that gilt and horrible feeling i had to food is like a tonne lifted off of my chest!! If anyone else has suffered from this type of eating disorder and is unsure as to if they want to have this operation, please do yourself a favour and talk to your dr about it. I wish I had have done this ages ago.
  5. Water, water, water. I could be that you are eating too many calories. I'm 3 months out and my surgeon has me a 900 calories (I'm still eating 800). How much protein are you getting in? Protein will help in weight loss also. Good luck and be strong.
  6. I am not looking forward to the pre-op diet at all. One day at a time. Hope your back pain gets better. Bet getting the extra weight off is going to help in the long run.

    The Stall

This is so helpful- I am about 2.5 weeks post op and the scale hasn't budged in 4 or 5 days! I was wondering if there is anything special you are supposed to do about it, but from what everyone is saying it sounds like you just need to follow your program and stick it out. I keep trying to focus on the accomplishments I've made so far- I am at my lowest weight in more than 3 years- but I just keep worrying I am doing something wrong and that's why I'm stuck. Good to know that's not the case!
  8. So I will give you my personal experience , take from it what you will. As Jenn said, many people are doing great. MANY. However, there are those like me. I didn't do bad but definately could have done better. I am approaching my two year anniversary and I never reached goal and honestly, I've recently gained six pounds in one month! Alarming to me because I never though this would be me. I know what to do and have taken steps to start to loose again. But the reason I'm posting this is to share with you my reality. As superdave said, If there is some mental work you have to do before having the surgery-do it. The first six months weight loss is pretty rapid. After that, it takes effort EVERY DAY (at least for most of us). I have no regrets and would do it again but I just think everyone should work on the mental aspect of weight gain before attacking the physical.

    Last 10 pounds

I am working on my last ten as well and it is really tough. Can’t offer much advice. Just say I feel ya and that I was already worried about regain at my first post op appointment. I think it’s because I have lost weight before. More than once and I always put it back on. I have everything crossed that this is different for us.

    My stall

I too experienced what you have. Although I have noticed that I would gain a pound or two and then lose a pound or two. It's very frustrating. I had my surgery March 21st. I am on phase 3, pureed food. I lost roughly about 40 pounds. I have started walking do I'm hoping that will help me shed some pounds. Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App

    Am I the only one

@@albare1978 - I remember coming home and utterly wierded out that I GAINED weight. It was a WTF moment. Then I remembered all the IV Fluid they stuck in me, and it made sense. Then I couldn't poop for a while. But things started working again. Part of it I think is the body goes into a "oh dang there must be a famine, must preserve the fat mode" for a little while (isn't evolution grand?) Just work the program and be sane. It will happen. Physics eventually wins out.
  12. Hey guys! I had vsg about 9 months ago (June 2, 2020) and I am so happy I did it!! HW 287, SW 261, and CW 158. My goal weight is 150 (so close!!), but I seem to be hitting a stall. I can’t seem to go below 154😩. Any advice? I’m so happy with the results that I just want to do everything I can to stay like this and NEVER go back to that weight! Does anyone else feel nervous about regain so early post op? Any advice from those several years out who have advice as to long-term maintenance? Any advice would be appreciated 😊
  13. I was at my post-op appt yesterday (three weeks out). When I told my doc I had returned to the gym he said "STOP". It takes 6 weeks for the stomach and port area to heal. Cardio is ok, but no weights/sit-ups, etc.
  14. Hello everyone. I am in the very beginning stages of the lap band process and am looking forward to reading your insights on the process. A little about me: I am 29 years old, am 290lbs and have been overweight since I was 15. I also have PCOS (diagnosed 5 years ago) and am hoping that eventually I will be able to have children. After 9 years of marriage it is not my number one motivator - as I have become spoiled with my current lifestyle. My main motivator is that my dad and his identical twin brother both died at the age of 53 of heart problems. They also had other health issues like diabetes and high blood pressure. I know that I am a ticking time bomb because I am already insulin resistant and my once textbook blood pressure is starting to creep up. I have tried many weight loss programs and nothing has worked for me so I am hoping that this is the one thing that can really help.

    I'm still at a loss...

Cat - It does sound like you need more of a fill. If all I ate was 3 oz at a time I would normally be hungry too. I measure my food occasionally and I would say I can eat around 6-7 oz of food at a meal - but that also depends on what it is. Every sweet spot is different. Even though many of their patients are at their sweet spot at your level doesn't mean you are. You should not be hungry for at least 3-4 hours after a meal. Remember to eat the recommended level of Protein for you and that should help with your hunger. Also you may want to up your Fiber intake which also helps you feel full longer. I actually put in 2 Tbsp of Benefiber in my Protein shake every morning. Takes me about 2 - 2 1/2 hours to drink it, but I'm usually not hungry until around 2pm in the afternoon. In my opinion, everyone's band experience is somewhat unique. You will know when you begin to feel restriction. Keep getting your fills until you get to your sweet spot and don't let your doctor talk you out of it. You should not have to feel like your dieting your way through this experience to lose weight. Just try to eat healthier, get enough protein, up your fiber intake and drink enough fluids to keep everything "going". Best of luck to you!
  16. i had the same surgeon as JamieLogical. Pretty much the same preop diet. I was actually required to lose 5% of my body weight prior to surgery. Ended up losing almost double that! And it really gave me a good opportunity to fine-tune and experiment with that liquid diet we all loved so much postop!
  17. What am I not doing right? Start weight 247/now 201./Goal 145. NOT THERE YET! FRUSTRATED. Fills...unfills... exercise.... yep... done triathlons 4x, ran a half marathon... trainers galore.... Too tight... too loose... Any ideas out there? Cause I am sick of this and thinking of moving on to another weight loss surgery. Thanks for any help! Angie

    I'm Scared

Don't be scared just try and measure your food. Try not to eat more than 1cup. And make sure you go walking..excersise! Get up and get moving! You need to visualize yourself thinner and healthier! Try and think POSITIVE! You deserve this! I had my surgery on 9/23. I have lost 15lbs. Although I am happy with my weight loss, and feel soo much better already, I, like everbody else, wish the weight would come off quicker. I can tell the inches are coming off because I work out. I am not focusing on the number but more on how I feel, and the size of my clothes. The inches are coming off.. I know because I now wear a size 16/18 instead of a 20/22. I have my first fill on 11-9-09. From what I understand the restriction/weight loss starts after that. I am thankful because it is right before this dreaded "food holiday!" Good luck to you!

    5 weeks

So far so good! I found out we were pregnant a week ago.. since then I am down 3 lbs. So great! Its so weird that I am losing but my tummy is getting rounder! #2 is def gonna show before #1 did! I have contiuned my workouts-increased cardio and decreased weights. I have maintained my diet but gave in to some cracker temptations LOL I went out to dinner but avoided what I "wanted" and got what I knew was appropriate calories for a meal. Phew! I hope I can continue to avoid a huge gain... i understand i will most likely gain because I am pregnant BUT last pregnancy I gained 70 lbs so it feels great that I am making better choices already!
  21. I see so many ppl talking about their sometimes weeks long pre op diet of just liquids. It's always surgeons in the US. I'm getting sleeved in Mexico by dr. Ponce. He requires healthy diet for a week, and 2 days of yogurt. Anyone know why there is such a difference? Makes you wonder what difference it really makes? Or maybe it just depends on your weight?

    Feeling Guilty

This is not meant to sound harsh but I invite you to seriously reflect on why you would chose to eat pizza 1) so soon after WLS and 2) after all you did to GET surgery. You are not on Weight Watchers here. You've chosen voluntarily to have major, invasive surgery because your weight is impacting your mental and physical health. To be 20 days out and to eat pizza? Please consider adding a mental health person to your bariatric team. You want to have your head in the game in order to be successful with the tool. Don't put pizza into your body, at least until you are securely at goal, if then. Don't waste this gift.

    Weight loss on liquid diet

The crazy thing is the scale doesn't always make sense. I lost 22 pounds on the pre-op. It was two weeks, very restrictive. I felt like I was a super model because I starved the whole time and all I could do is remind myself it was temporary and I could do it. So can you! Try not to be too hard on yourself mentally because our bodies can do their own thing for a few days let alone the hormones and time of month etc. If you stick with it, the weight will come off and be so worth it. Colleen
  24. I lost seven pounds in the first three days of my two week liquid diet. For the last two days, the scale hasn't budged when I am really needing encouragement. I know a lot of the weight was water. Just curious what others have loss on the liquid diet.

    Raging hormones

As you lose weight, estrogen that is stored in fat cels re-enter your circulatory system. You probably do need an adjustment But it might also be a mourning of foods. Both are real possibilities. Start with your bariatric Dr. He or she can guide you best. Good luck.
