    Serious Decison To Make

I had the sleeve because I liked not having the malabsorption and liked having the fundus gone (the stretchy part that produces a lot of the hunger hormone ghrelin). Never thought it was any less invasive--I agree it's totally invasive and non reversible! However I think it has a long enough history to not be the "flavor of the month" either. It has its own pros and cons. Member @bellablooom is a bypass to sleeve revision and talks about it freely. Check out her posts.

    Serious Decison To Make

I see more sleeve to bypass revisions....nnever bypass to sleeve....
  3. The pain is from a hole being left where the port was. Your body fills it up with fluid trying to heal it and this causes swelling and pressure. Mine even looked like the end of a football sticking out (tiny volcano lol). Thirteen days since my revision surgery and I finally got out of bed without feeling sore this morning.

    Why sleeve and not bypass?

@@JamieLogical, Thanks - that's what i figured too. I've already lost enough that if for some reason it had to be revised, it should work now. But there are certainly some positives with the sleeve for me too so after I got over the initial disappointment I'm determined to make it work. There are definitely pros and cons to both procedures and ultimately it's what works best for each person. So far I haven't had any reflux which was my biggest worry with sleeve, as I'd had some bad GERD many years ago (but my scope just before surgery showed none)

    Woke!up choking

Get to the doc or get yourself on an acid blocker! Watch the acidic food after about 6pm and raise the head of your bed. I used the bed lifts sold at Bed Bath and Beyond and just put a pair under the top feet. Made a huge difference. Once the swelling went down and I lost a bit more weight things got much better. I still take 40 mg of Omeprazole 2x per day and probably always will. The sleeve is a reflux inducing surgery. Some folks feel it more than others. I was told by my surgeon up front (I went in with some reflux) that the "fix" if it can't be controlled through meds etc, is a revision to bypass. Good luck!
  6. Right after my surgery in Feb 2015, I felt great. I had a little bit of anxiety about a month later as the weight loss slowed down and that feeling recurred several times as the weight plateaued for a few days over the course of the following several months. At the sixth month point in August, I was very happy with the progress. I had reached a weight that I was satisfied with. Then in mid August, I had a bowel obstruction which required a resection and revision of the gastric bypass and ended up in the hospital for three weeks. Since then, I've had three additional partial obstructions which resolved without surgery. It has been a roller coaster ride since August and I have sunk into depression. Or rather the underlying depression which always seems to be there, came to the surface. I'm back on psych meds. I do not regret having had the surgery. I'm in a much better place and can do so much more than I had ever done before. I have a positive and hopeful outlook for the future, at least when the symptoms of the depression aren't weighing me down. I think overall the feelings you feel will be all over the place and will depend on your physiology, history, progress, situation, and outlook. The best thing I've found to do is to live each day as it comes.

    Frustration and anger

People are so judgmental that sometimes you need to put them in their places. I had my surgery on 10/26 as well, I'm down 42 pounds, and I'm so excited because I thought I would lose slower than this because I was a lap band revision. I had one person at work compliment how good I look while another said they really didn't see a difference. When it's all said and done I try my best to ignore because I'm wearing pants that wouldn't come up past my hips a few months ago!
  8. Revision surgery scheduled for Dec 28!!!!!!!
  9. I am a man so it might be a bit different. I just had DS on 12/7/15. I feel great. I am already on the weight machines lifting using arms legs and chests (no core or abs yet). Recovery was/is a breeze. I can drink a ton of water. I went to Rex Bariatric in Raleigh where they have 3 or 4 surgeons and do all of the WLS types. I think that helps avoid the situation where "if you only have a hammer in your tool belt, everything looks like a nail." In other words, they are not pushing you to fit into one procedure because of a lack of skill in others. A group that does it all is skilled at picking the right surgery and competent at whichever one suits you the best. I had two other friends who got different WLS from my same surgeon - with great results. He recommended a different one for me. So, if you go to a place that can do it all, listen to them. They want success stories and no revisions. Don't let fear get in the way of the recommended option. They have to scare the crud out of everyone. Disclaimers and stuff. Also, us folks needing WLS probably haven't followed our doctors advice very well in the past -- and look where it got us. . For me, I decided to concede that my brilliant opinions and decisions about my health were demonstrably proven to suck. So, I decided it was time to listen and obey the doctor, and I'm glad I did.
  10. I am 17 months post surgery and am just now eating 1000-1200 calories a day (I know some vets have different experiences and ate more calories more quickly than I). I can't imagine being able to get 1200 calories a day in 2 months post surgery. Also my nutrient macros are much different than yours. I aim for 100 + grams of protein a day and I drink 90-100 oz of liquid a day. I've lost 130ish lbs on my plan (not that my plan is anything special or the only one that works). I would make a few suggestions: (1) check with your surgeon or NUT about the 1200 calories which seem more like a maintenance level and less like a weight loss level; (2) ditch the half cup mashed potatoes (and similar carb heavy foods that lack nutritional value) and substitute for a soft veggie if you still have room after eating your protein; (3) try reducing your calories to 1000 and see if it kick starts your weight loss. Since I was not a revision patient I don't know how that affects loss or calorie consumption so my advice may not apply to you at all. Good luck!
  11. I had a lot of pain after my revision, especially the large incision where my port resided for 14 years. The pain meds they gave me in the hospital were useless so I never took anything after and was in pain for a while. I had my hand over my incision when walking for the first week or so but I had pain longer than that. Hang in there, its a big surgery and pain is to be expected. Keep sipping. Not sure what you mean that the Water is not going through. Do you mean you don't know if it is going through your sleeve?

Need a post-op diet plan plz

AS a band to sleeve revision, my surgeon was extra conservative and had me progress slower than the standard. I recieved a notebook with very clear week by week instructions and goals but it was 4 years ago and i know that Protein recommendations etc are higher now. I suggest going to the website of a COE like Mayo clinic and see what they have posted online. The key thing is to slowly add. I started with Clear liquids, then full liquids (like protein drinks), then liquids with a bit more texture (like refried Beans diluted with broth, Soups with no chunks etc), then introduced semi solids like yogurt, cottage cheese... then slowly slowly added. If you ever feel uncomfortable it is likely you are eating too much or eating too fast or perhaps progressing to quickly. Remember that nerves were cut and you may not "feel" everything so eat by the clock and measuring cup (early on, we are talking just a few bites!)

    360+ pounds?!? help!

I personally had the RNY and my starting weight was a little more than you (392). When I spoke to the surgeon for the first time, I had the mindset of the sleeve. When I spoke to him he stated with as much weight I wanted to lose, that we can do the sleeve and a RNY revision later because he didn't believe I would be happy with the weight loss. I chose RNY because I didn't want to have a 2nd revision surgery later. In the end, its your choice and what your comfortable with
  14. Wishing you well and hoping you can get the revision.
  15. It'd be helpful if you outlined what type of revision are you having, along with what tests were run that concluded that you needed a revision? And how has your diet been? Did you main a Protein forward diet, not drink with meals, etc?

    Why sleeve and not bypass?

@@drmeow I hope your sleeve ultimately works out for you. It must have been very disappointing to go through all that and still not end up with the procedure you wanted. I suppose if it doesn't work out, a revision to bypass is always possible, though you obviously can never get that 80% of your stomach back. I think that if you are diligent and focus on making the most of your sleeve, it can work for you. All the best!
  17. Although I have seen a lot of post on this board from RNY gastric bypass patients and patients that have revisions from one surgery (such as lap band) to RNY, I haven't seen many from RNY to RNY revisions. There may be others in the same boat as you but they don't seem to gravetate to this board. On the other hand, if we can be of any help, please ask specific questions and we might be able to help. There are two phases to the process. The "Weight-Loss" phase and the "Maintenance" phase. It looks like you did well in the "Weight-Loss" phase but not so well in the "Maintenance" phase. It seems like the guidance given by the surgeons work very well in the "Weight Loss" phase but it seems to come to an end as you transition into the "Maintenance" phase.
  18. It has something to do with hormones that are released during surgery which cause a rapid weight loss. Since this is a revision those hormones have already been released. I'm still trying to research this though.
  19. Hi! I'm new, this is my first post. I had gastric bypass surgery in 2005. I lost about 100 lbs and have since gained it back plus a couple extra. Last year I made the decision to have a revision surgery. I have been having the hardest time finding people who have had revision to their gastric bypass surgery. I have questions and can't find answers. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction?

  21. @@Dallas Powell I have been meaning to get around to replying to this post for like a week, sorry Dallas. However, the Doctor is W-R-O-N-G about revisional surgery. Here is a link to the North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset Long Island, they advertise two revisional procedures right on the website. Link here, Note the two bottom choices the StomaphyX procedure and the ROSE procedure. When I was in NY I lived about 3 miles from this Hospital, it is where both my children were born and I have been a guest several times, lol. Not sure where you are, or your resources, but the North Shore-LIJ Health system, is a world class hospital, they are cutting edge, while I had my surgery done here in NH where I live, if practical there is no where else on Earth I would rather be than the North Shore Hospital. Plugging for them was not my intent, my intent was to show you that there are very simple and low risk almost outpatient procedures to fix with is wrong with you. Your surgeon was correct, 10 years ago revision was a VERY big deal. Reducing stoma size was not so difficult, however reducing the size of the Antistomosis was a VERY big deal. Now it's done with an endoscope through your mouth with conscious sedation. So again, don't buy into that ass-wholes BS, look into the procedures listed and then comes the hard part. Getting your insurance to pay for it. Best of luck and keep us posted! Merry Christmas and lets all pray for Dallas to have a great new year!!
  22. I had my revision surgery done on Nov. 30th and also woke up in excruciating pain! It lasted about 5 days that intense, and then each day moving forward, it got better. I was beginning to have regrets and was unsure why I had so much burning at the port site when I would sip Water or eat popsicles, but please know that this too shall pass. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks since my surgery and I am feeling better and stronger each day. I have lost 25 lbs and the compliments are starting to come in. Lastly, I began experiencing the bleeding 2 weeks and 1 day after surgery and today is day 5! I was never warned about this and was very upset as I have not had a cycle in what would have been 3 years in 3 weeks. I pray you feel better soon and can enjoy the results of your revision surgery:) Stay encouraged.

    Connecticut Sleevers?

Hi -- How much do you have to loose and how old are you? I was sleeved at 56. For me, the surgery was a breeze. I have no issues with Vitamin levels, etc. Never once vomited or had any kind of dumping issue -- even if I had a bit of a sugary treat. Maybe that would be true if I had bypass, but from what I've heard, it's somewhat more intense - both the surgery and the lifestyle. For either one, exercise is the "secret sauce". My original, self imposed goal was 112 lbs, based on insurance charts. Then I revised to 132. Now at about 140, I am wearing a 6 petite in most things. If I had the money to do a front lift and get rid of the excess skin, I would probably be a 4. I am more focused on percentage of body fat. When I started, I was at about 43% body fat -- now I am at 24%. So, my point is, it is possible to be very successful with the sleeve. I believe (but I am not a doctor) that there are other reasons to go with the bypass besides amount to loose. I have heard that it is a better (but not the only choice) for those with diabetes. Ellen

    360+ pounds?!? help!

My BMI was 52 when I revised from band to sleeve 4 years ago. I lost alot of weight and am successfully maintaining at a normal size/weight. I would do it again in a heartbeat. However,I am also a fact based decision maker. I think someone with a very high Bmi should seriously consider the bypass and DS. Fact is that it is hard to maintain massive weight loss and those two procedures have good track records with people who start at a higher weight. I have seen too many people (especially my band days) who lost alot of weight but never reallymet their goal. There are lots of success stories on this forum of all surgery types but I would really look into studies and facts because it IS a different path to lose more than half your body size. I also think it is important to know the pros and cons and key risks of each procedure so you can make the best decision for yourself. In my view, all WLS have a permanent impact (incredible pictures of my scar tissue due to the reversible lapband available..Ha!) so think carefully before leaping. Good luck, it really is one of the best thing I have done for myself!
  25. I'm getting my band out on Dec 22 due to having complications. I ended up going to a different bariatric doctor because the doctor who placed the band never un-fill me when I would see him. I had constant acid reflux for a couple of years, no matter what time of the day it was and whether I ate or not. I complained to my primary care doctor and he gave me Nexium. That still didn't work and I wasn't sleeping. I finally told my doctor that I wanted further tests because I was scared of getting cancer of the esophagus front the acid. He finally mentioned that there was a bariatric center in my town (that I wasn't aware of) and referred me. I got an appointment where the doctor unfilled me and and then I went back every couple of weeks to try and get my fill right. The acid reflux subsided while I was unfilled but I started get spasms in my esophagus more frequently. I am now getting the band removed on Tuesday and the doctor expects there to be scar tissue, which he will remove. I hope to get a revision to RNY in February or March depending on what I look like inside. I'm afraid that i will be so messed up that he will not recommend I get it done. I loved my band because it helped me lose 100#. I was never able to get all of my weight off and have since gained 40#. I wish I wouldn't have been so afraid to the the RNY done in the first place. I just hope my insurance will approve the new procedure.
