    Regret and Depression

I'm 2 weeks and 2 days post op. This is exactly how I felt! Now 2 weeks later, not as much but I do feel a bit shell shocked. I don't think any amount of research can really prepare you for it. It's a massive deal. Food is a big thing and your body has gone through a lot. Try to remember why you done and how the weight held you back. You obviously done it for the right reasons. Good luck 🍀💪
  2. My revision was for GERD not regain so I can’t speak to that, sorry. What I have heard is that the weight loss from VSG to RNY can be slower and lower but every body reacts differently. I initially lost about 10/12 lbs but I have bounced back into my pre surgery range (I was already at my goal) I am happy to say that the symptoms of GERD have not come back so I’m very happy about that.

    November 2020 sleevers

Today is my wife and my surgery anniversary. We are both down over 120 lbs since our high weights!

    Dumping 😭😭😭

Thank you so much for this post. I'm planning on a sleeve to RNY revision right after the first of the year. I was wondering if I'd lose some of my regain (45 lbs), I have severe reflux and a hiatial hernia. If I can lose some weight on top of hopefully fixing the reflux and non-cardiac heart pain from the hernia, it will be a great 2022!! I am with you, dumping and not worrying about regain, at least not much, is worth the trade off!! Again, thank you. If you have any helpful hints about eating/getting through the first couple of months, I'd appreciate it. I cannot imagine eating baby food. What protein did you find easy to get down the first two weeks? Again, thank you!
  5. If it's any comfort, I can eat that now (two months post-op) and just had a barium swallow and my sleeve is exactly fine. Don't freak out. Just weigh yourself once a week or so, and have an "oh sh*t" weight where if you get there you will go back to basics to get back down. So if your goal was 50 kg, maybe you say at 53 kg it's time to get serious (it being a lot easier to lose 3 kg than 10 kg).

    Week 5 since op

I’m not sure it gets much better, but rather you get used to it. I am 5months post op. The food doesn’t feel stuck any more, but the few bites is still a thing. I can usually get 6 bites in but I take large bites and eat fast which is not good so maybe if you continue with small bites and eat slow you will continue to gain bites! They call it restriction and basically it means your sleeve is doing it’s job, but it is hard to get used to! Sounds like you are on the right track… your weight loss stalls are very normal at this stage!
  7. Holy Moly it’s been a year this month! I have attached a photo and it’s actually hard to look at! I have some work to do yet and I have moved my goal weight around so I am not done yet but what a ride If I can do it at 50 anyone can !

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

I started puréed at the one week mark. So many doctors require different things. I followed my friends plan (i was allowed to start puréed on week 2 for me). I lost so much weight (not healthily) bc I couldn’t drink anything anymore I wanted to chew so I preferred not to eat and was starving. Nothing has felt bad so that’s good. I was on yogurt and stuff when I got home from hospital. My follow up is tomorrow so hopefully all is well. listen to your body. If something feels like it’s not setting then remove it and try again at another time.

One Year Out, Looking For Advice

Hi Tapioca- I am no expert and I love the idea of a Bariatric Therapist from @Jaelzion! She sounds like a pro. It also sounds like you are doing great and are at a healthy weight! Like you, I've found myself snacking on more unhealthy things lately and a few tricks that have helped me include: 1) Going for a walk for about an hour. During this hour I naturally don't snack, and drink a full water bottle. Even if i don't want to go, I tell my self to do just 20min and I always end up doing an hour. 2) Paying attention to what I am craving when I snack- usually its salty or sweet/chocolate, so I've tried to swap for healthier salt/sweet (Salt- hummus & carrots, soup; Sweet- SF hot chocolate, protein hot chocolate, 100 Cal Chocolate bar, strawberries & whip cream) 3) I stick to an eating schedule, and eat basically the same thing M-F, so I don't get too hungry and don't have to think about what I am going to eat. 4) Sometimes I force myself to have a protein shake before a snack, and 90% of the time I don't want the snack after the shake. 5) I turn off the TV/regular shows and replace them with computer (unhealthy in other ways, but nonetheless), documentaries or books. I am easily influenced by what people on TV are eating. If they are having cookies, I want cookies. 6) Controversial but, I weigh myself everyday. It keeps me motivated. I know others say not to, but it works for me. 7) Balancing out an unhealthy day, with an extra healthy one. It was my Dad's bday recently and ya know what, we had cake, pizza & wine. I had a little of each. I think long term success includes balance. So, following a day like that (which is rare, but is life) I try to have an extra healthy few days focused on protein shakes & veggies. Again, I am no expert but hope these ideas help. I know ideas from other members have helped me a ton. Take care! You are doing great!

    Any December 2021 bypass people?

Hi! December 6th here, this has been a crazy long process for me, and I was afraid it wouldn't happen this year, but I'm slipping in under the wire, lol. I have been considering this surgery for over 10 years, finally got to a point where I am ready and sure of my decision (no easy feat for an indecisive and anxious person like myself), and have been seeing my PCP for a year and a half in preparation for this (insurance requires 6 months, but because of CVD it was hard to get appointments sometimes, so it stretched things out). I finally got the go-ahead from my surgeon and insurance company in the end of August, but was told they were canceling all elective surgeries in my region and they were booking out into mid-November, so I thought there is no way they are going to get me in before the end of the year with all of the cancellations, rescheduling, and not actually knowing when surgeries can be booked again, and I met my deductible this year. That mean that if I don't get the surgery done this year, it will cost me thousands more out of pocket, and at that point, I was giving up and going to Mexico. Well, surgery is in 25 days, and I am 5 days into my prescribed preop diet (which I despise, I have texture sensitivity issues and protein shakes are ick), and I was petrified. I am doing well so far, not as bad as I thought, I am allotted 5 Optifast shakes (can sub one of those for a bar or soup daily) and one food meal with 1/2 c. lean protein, 1-2 c. non-starchy vegetables, 1 tsp fat, and one serving of fruit, with unlimited (but reasonable amounts, the calories do still add up) sugar-free popsicles, dill pickles, cucumbers, and celery, no dairy, vinegars and mustard allowed, salt-free seasonings as well. It really hasn't been so bad, but I prefer volume at this stage, so raw veggies are my daily food meal, but I miss something warm and comforting in the chilly weather. I find that I'm not even craving junk food, like, a bowl of garlicky black or pinto beans would be so good right now, lol, but no starches, so no beans. Anyhow, those are my thoughts, if anyone cares to share as well. HW: 400+ (no scale at that time, highest measured weight was 399) SW: 384 CW: 338 GW: Healthy and active

Regrets for a Food & Wine Lover?

It's been helpful to read the responses here. While I'm not exactly a foodie, I enjoy cooking and strong flavors. At home, I am still cooking new things and trying different recipes. I try to select generally healthy recipes and do additional tweaking with fresh and/or healthy ingredients. I'm still struggling with cooking smaller portions. We have a reservation at an all-inclusive in Mexico in January. I will be 13 mos. post op. I'm working on strategies to help me navigate. On the positive side, we have been to this resort before and know what they have to offer. It is a small, boutique resort and they are willing, within reason, to cook to order. The last time we were there we joked that it may be the first vacation on which we lost weight due to eating so much fresh seafood and grilled vegetables by choice. I think alcohol will be a bigger struggle for me. I realize that any of the syrupy, tropical drinks will not work. The resort is willing to make skinny versions of anything on request. But empty calories are empty calories. I've not had much to drink since surgery. It hasn't bothered me as much as I thought it would. I think that's because I want to maximize my losing potential in the first year. What I have had to drink, has not been as tasty as it seemed in the past. I was already at the age where I can afford to drink decent liquor over quantity, but even the reasonably good brands just didn't taste quite like I remembered. While I fully intend to give myself some grace to indulge within reason, I still want to make the best choices I can I'd love to hear thoughts and advice.
  12. I think you’ve probably answered your own question in that you realise you’ve gained a bad habit, and why. It’s going to take determination and willpower to break that habit and eat differently. If you’re now getting enough food and your weight loss has stopped, you don’t need to snack - it’s as simple as that. The stopping of snacking is not so easy, because you have to retrain your brain. It may be that you need to construct some other ‘habits’ by working out something to do instead of snacking. If you DO want to snack, put aside small portions of healthy snacks you will allow yourself, but only so many in the day. Calorie count them if necessary. Avoid making your snacks sweets and chips. You must have other, healthy things, you could eat. But don’t allow yourself to snack too much anyway - find a strategy. Sticking to it at first will be hard, but like with any habit, it can be broken and a new habit can be achieved. You do not want to start gaining again, because it’s demoralising and you don't want that. Your brain is telling you that you NEED these unhealthy things - you don’t. You can retrain it!
  13. You Are My Sunshine- Thank you for sharing this post. I am sure there are many people on here that are considering this surgery that may also be apprehensive & have similar fears of going through with the surgery. It is a life changing decision, and I think it is better to hold off until you are sure that you are ready to proceed. Perhaps going into it so unsure may have given you a more challenging recovery, in that you might have more buyer's remorse & have more difficulty tolerating the challenges you might face during the healing process. A year ago, I don't think I would have been ready for this surgery. I had been offended when doctors suggested it in the past. I needed to be in the right place & ready for it. Once I finally decided that I needed the surgery for me to have a successful weight loss journey, I had a peaceful & hopeful feeling about it. I still had some slight fears of complications, but nothing that would have stopped my plans. I think the suggestion from ShoppGirl to see a bariatric therapist is a great idea. Give yourself time to discover whether this is right for you, or maybe it something that should be reconsidered down the road. Good luck, and know that you did the right thing for you at this time. 🤗
  14. My surgery is set for 11/24! I started 2 years ago trying to lose weight I was at my heaviest 303 pounds. I lost 60 lbs and gained 30 back.  I am ready for this journey.

  15. I have a few NSV's to share!😁 Yesterday, I went to a restaurant that I went to before surgery. We sat outside in patio chairs, and I had no problem sitting in the chair, the arms of the chair were not cutting into the sides of my thighs. (I still don't trust those plastic white ones, though.) Also, yesterday, a neighbor asked if I lost weight & said I looked great. It was surprising to hear from someone who doesn't know about my surgery. It was also the first time I heard anything from someone who didn't know. Today, I tried on the bridesmaid dress I will be wearing for my brother's wedding in April. At the end of September, I ordered a size 16 even though I couldn't quite zip it, hoping that by April it would fit, or possibly need to be taken in. Well, it zipped with a little room! Another NSV is my shirts are getting very baggy on me. I am trying to hold off on buying lots of clothes in between sizes, but every time I wear something lately, I feel like it may be the last time. (Although, I guess this isn't really a weird NSV🤷‍♀️) BTW- I love reading everyone's NSV's and can relate to so many of them. It is so nice to hear about other's progress & really start seeing some of my own. 🤗
  16. I received gastric sleeve in 2019 and was doing really well until covid hit. I lost my job and staying home when it first hit really made me depressed. Now I cant lose any weight i just keep gaining and gaining. Im trying to get some advice on if i should get revision surgery or bypass.
  17. Hello! This is my first post on a weight loss surgery forum. Just seeking advice for some developed bad habits. I am officially one year post op from my gastric sleeve. I am 5'1 and 133 pounds now and 10 pounds away from my goal weight. At this point, I've found it very difficult to loose more weight. I'm looking for advice on how to get back in gear. I've found that I'm eating through the entire day, and I'm constantly thinking about food. I didn't even do that before surgery. After my operation, I wasn't getting enough calories, at max 300-500 a day, even 6 months out. I just couldn't eat a lot during meals and never felt hungry. My nutritionist advised to snack(healthily of course) throughout the day, and I was able to increase my daily calories to 900 on average. About 9 months post op, I was able to eat enough calories without having to snack as frequently. But I find that now I can't stop snacking throughout the day. And I've gone to eating sweets and chips etc. Even if I'm not hungry. All my brain can think about is "what can I eat next". Because I had to force myself to eat more throughout the day, I feel like now my body has gotten in the habit of constantly wanting food, even when I don't need it. And I've been really craving junk food and snack food. What are some tips to help myself from getting out of this habit? I'm maintaining my weight now, and not gaining. But I feel like I will eventually gain if I keep this up, I don't want it to derail all my hard work. I still do want to get to my goal weight. I do a boot camp 3-4 days a week for 7 months now. But I haven't lost any weight in over 3 months. I know it's a mindset thing, but I would appreciate any tips. :( Thanks!
  18. Hi there. Please help. I’m 1.5 year post op and I’m so worried. I’m able to eat 170grams of yogurt with 30g protein granola and 50grams strawberries with 15grams of peanut butter. So worried and anxious that it’s not normal. Am I stretching my sleeve? 😭😭😭 is this normal. I make sure to keep my dinner portions to 170grams. Please help guys.. I’d love to hear.. I’m struggling so much mentally.
  19. I'm scheduled for surgery December 16th and I'm having second thoughts. I had a traumatic childhood (I am in weekly therapy) so control over food is important to me. I'm not a binger not do I necessarily eat too much, I gain weight because of what I eat. Will I be able to eat any foods I like after I'm through the post-op liquid/puree stages? I can't handle eating only low fat protein and veggies now and that seems to be what others are eating on chat groups. Should I not have the surgery or have others with emotional eating issues been ok? I really appreciate hearing from anyone willing to answer, especially those with psychological food reliance issues. Also, I'm told no caffeine, ever again. Is that what you guys follow?

    Any December 2021 bypass people?

I am having a RNY revision on Dec 13. I had my first RNY in 2010, lost about 130 lbs. I’ve gained about 40 back and have developed a hiatal hernia, so I’m getting the hernia repair and he will be further reducing my pouch and tightening my stoma.
  22. No stupid questions here. It’s the same way for all of us - just slowly up your calories until your weight loss stops with some fluctuation. It can take time to stop losing. I added snacks (combinations of yoghurt, protein bar, cheese sticks, hummus, chia pudding, multi or whole grain crackers, nuts, fruit,) still tried to keep low fat (except for salad dressing - damn you Mr Newman), low sugar, only a few good complex carbs & everything, bar fruit, with protein. I don’t eat as many snacks now as I can physically eat more in a meal. And yes, I did feel like I was eating all day. I was also s still seeing my dietician for the first 5 months of maintenance (stopped with COVID) so she was checking what I was adding & made a couple of suggestions. The calories I need to maintain will be different to what you need. I consume about 1200 - 1300 calories (I’m shorter than you, have a small frame, am in my mid 50s, not very active & maintain at a lower weight). Others can consume a lot more. My surgeon & GP initially told me to put on a couple of kgs but I weigh less now & they’re both happy with my weight.

    Gout Week 4 after VSG

You’re likely having a bad bout because of the uric acid stored in your fat being released as you lose weight. Worse is that you can’t take nsaids post surgery to reduce the inflammation. Do you take the gout medication, which reduces the amount of uric acid your body produces, everyday (can’t remember its name) ? it takes a couple of months to really work but by then you may have lost enough weight that you may not experience gout again. There’s still plenty of protein sources you can eat. You likely will be starting or about to start soft foods so look to beans, eggs, slow cook lean meats, continue with your protein shakes, yoghurt, make rolled oats on milk, etc. but check your plan to be sure. You will already doing a lot to help reduce uric acid production because of your low fat, low sugar, no alcohol diet. Contact your medical team for help to manage the pain. Hope you feel better soon.

    Insurance Through Postop

Alright today is the day- one year ago today I was sleeved! It has been an incredible year. I weigh less than I’ve lost now. I am a normal weight, I run and row every day, I am not embarrassed of my pictures anymore. I have zero regrets about this surgery. It has literally changed the course of my life, and I’m happier than I ever thought I’d be.

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

Yeah, I get it but I didn't expect it to slow this much so soon. And yes, I spoke to my surgeons office today as I'm still not sure if this period issue is due to the surgery or something else. Either way when I asked him if there was a test for me to take to test my hormone levels he suggested I contact my regular doc for that as he was unsure about what exactly should be ordered. So I did contact my family doc and he has ordered several tests to be done. He's worried it's gonna be hard to nail down exactly what is going on (if the tests show nothing outright) due to the amount of weight I've lost/surgery and possibly the cut in Metformin. But we shall see. I get the blood work done on Friday and he said he'll call me again after the results come in. Yes, I actually do feel more hungry (at times and depending on what I'm eating) but I don't think I'm making bad choices when it comes to my food. Eating the same type of stuff I always have just eating a lil more of it when I'm extra hungry, as I described above. I agree I need to do spot checks and in fact I started monitoring again several days ago to see if I'm over eating too much or not getting enough protein in. As for water, I know I at least get in 50 oz a day (cause I drink at least one of my 36 oz bottles and 2, 12 oz cups of coffee each day) and some times more (water) so not incredibly bad or off on that.
