  1. Hi! I am schedule for surgery on 6/6. I am on day 4th of liquid diet. I did a trial last week to see how hard it was going to be. Last week was a mess, hunger pains, mood swing and being very tired. This week has been tolerable, still have hunger pains, but I have schedule going. 😀

Not sure if I should go through with it

For me the one regret I had was waiting so long to do it. Yes, gong through the consultations sucked. I had to meet with a nutritionist and psychologist twice. I needed cardiac and pulmonary clearances. I had two separate sleep studies. I had a few rounds of blood work. Then came the terrible two week protein shake and liquid diet. But I stuck it out and had my sleeve surgery on the 16th. My surgery went fine. I had very little pain and soreness after. The reward has been the energy level I have now, lowering my blood sugar to where I am no longer a pre-diabetic and coming off my Metformin and lowering my high blood pressure to come off of my high blood pressure medicine. I'm enjoying the soft/pureed' food stage (this is where I am going to insert a reminder that everyone's post surgical plan is different and I am following what my doctor's office instructed me to do), because I get to discover how to put foods together that I can have and make them taste great. The journey has been worth the reward for me.

    PreOp Diet Struggles

I made it through the week without anymore slip ups. The first week was brutal. My surgery is scheduled tomorrow at 7:30am. I have to be at the hospital by 5:30am 🙏🏾

    Blah...my first stall...

So I'm still in pre-op, but I swear my scale remembers my weight occasionally and doesn't move. I can weigh with clothes on or off and it'll still just show the last weight. I will have my youngest who is 3 get on the scale to "reset" it with her 29lbs self.

    Blah...my first stall...

LOL I feel the same way. My normal weigh in day is Sunday, but I think I'll wait until Tuesday (my 4 week post op day) and hope I see something other than 363. I swear if I see 363 AGAIN the scale is going over the balcony (and I live on the 4th floor lol)

    May 2022 surgery?

My surgeons office says it’s normal for weight loss to be slow to start and sometimes even a little weight gain until week 6. If you are frustrated with it, can always switch something up. Eat more calories, workout a little longer, do a different workout entirely. I’ve been hiking with my dog the last few days for longer than our usual neighborhood walk and the scale is trending down. I’m out of the week 3 stall now it seems. The different elevation is probably helping me too—our usual walk is very flat, this new route is a little hilly.

    First fast food since surgery

I'm obsessed with the egg white and roasted red pepper bites from Starbucks as my fast food fix. My husband is in love with the Spinach and Feta wrap they have there. I really wish other fast food places would get on board with making a meal with eggs as the protein vs. chicken or beef. Last night, I went to a Mexican joint with my husband and I am happy to report that the scale still went down this morning. I only ate a total of about 10 chips, some guac, salsa, and 3 nachos (marinated chicken with cheese on top of 3 tortilla chips). I was satisfied and not overstuffed. I'm really enjoying this process! And as busy people, fast food is sometimes inevitable - it's nice that there ARE options!
  9. I am now post-op day 3. I am having issues with cramping nausea, and heart burn after sipping Clear Liquids. I am taking Pepcid twice a day and Zofran too. How do you manage these symptoms, so you can continue to drink? I'm dying here.... Thank you. Sent from my SM-N975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    May 2022 surgery?

So, did anyone else “stall” on week 2? I know about the 3 week stall, but I stalled when I switched to full liquid - even though I’m still under 500 cal per day. I actually gained a pound after the first day of full liquids. I am now day 13 post surgery and at same weight as day 7! I’m getting 60-70 G protein, struggling a little with water, but managing 50-64g and most days having around 420 - 450 cal/day. I am also doing 30 minutes on elliptical 4-5 days/week since Day 5 post-surgery.

    First fast food since surgery

Also, refried beans or black beans and a side of taco meat from taco bell. That saved me on days running around. And, Chipotle bowl with black beans, chicken, peppers/onions, cheese and pico with spicy tomatillo. It is A LOT though, I get 3 meals from it.

    Dreaded hair loss - question

Yes, hi! Mix apple cider vinegar and Water (3:1) in a spray bottle and spray directly to scalp before washing - each time. It has done wonders for my itchy, irritated scalp. Good luck!
  14. So I discovered I have a brand spanking new allergy to shellfish. I had a weird rash on Monday and Tuesday. I couldn't figure it out, and then Wednesday it hit me. I started taking my krill oil supplement again (I always took it before with no issues at all, and my surgeon recommended it again once I hit 3 weeks post op). So since there had never been any issues with it in the past, I didn't even consider it an issue when the rash started. Anyway, on Wednesday I remembered it and decided to take it out of my pills and see how things go. Lo and behold, no rash. No redness, no itching, nothing. So I looked it up and the rash/hives are part of an allergic reaction to shellfish (and krill oil pills are made from krill which are shellfish). I read those allergies can happen at any time, but when they do, you always need an epi pen with you because the more times it happens, the worse the reactions will be, and a shellfish allergy is one that never goes away, no matter when it starts. I reached out to my primary doctor and she is having me come in for blood work and a skin test for allergies. She's also prescribing me an epi pen, because the 2nd time I took the supplement my tongue was tingly and numb and my throat felt a little tight for a bit. Has this happened to anyone? I've never had a food allergy ever in my life, and now I suddenly get a big one? What the heck???

Thank you so much! That’s about what I was thinking…2-3 hours.

    May Surgery Buddies

My wife said they called her 3 hours after I went back. The doc said the surgery should only take 90 minutes to 2 hours. So, two to three hours, I guess.
  17. Blah...my first stall...

I'm on day 8 of my stall, and it's really annoying me. I stopped gaining weight several days ago (gained 4 pounds) but now I'm just sitting here not moving at all. Hoping it's over in the next week. I've seen a few people on here say theirs last 3 or even 4 weeks, and that would just freak me out lol

    DS or bypass after sleeve?

Thanks. Both doctors are close to me. If I want a doctor associated with my hospital to do the DS, then I need to go to a hospital 3 hours away. The doctor who is close to me and in my hospital system only does the bypass.
  20. I had a sleeve done about 10 years ago when I was 40. I went from about 280 to 160 and have put the weight back on. I have seen two surgeons in my area in the last couple of months. One does DS and says I am kinda halfway through a DS procedure. The other surgeon does not do DS so she is recommending bypass. If I really want, she can refer me to a surgeon in the hospital system who does DS but that is 3 hours away. I've had some friends use the DS surgeon and recommend her but her office staff is a hot mess. An overall lack of organization and I send info to the person I am told to but then someone else calls and says I wasn't supposed to send to that person. The by pass surgeon is in my hospital system and therefore has access to all my doctor's records since nearly every one of my doctors is in that hospital system. By pass doctor said that DS wasn't fully "approved" (my word not hers) and is still considered experimental but she wants to learn how to do it and expects it will be much more common in the near future. My husband is asking me what will I do differently after this surgery that I didn't do before. Great question. I am moving through all the insurance required hoops for both doctors at this point but still not sure I want to do either. Anyone have any words of wisdom? Not sure how to proceed. Thanks so much!
  21. I got an amazing veggie pizza with a cauliflower crust on it at Costco a few weeks ago. It was low calorie and omg good. I dont know if you have one around but if so that kills the pizza cravings at way less calories. It isnt that we cant ever have that again just try to pick a healthier alternative. For me I hadnt eaten pizza in a year so that was a big treat for me. I also wont make it a habit but made me feel “Normal” again lol
  22. No I have no issues with it or even cooking for them. I was very healthy and a vegan when I met my meat eating husband 21 years ago. Our first date was to a steak house. I was a vegan from age 5 to 33 by choice (was raised on a cattle ranch and when my pet steer was butchered I refused to eat meat not wanting to wanting him - long story) My husband loves food and bad food. I realize now out marriage was centered around eating. I love the fact now I can say hey I cant eat this or that or out because of my surgery. When Id do that all these years he would get mad at me and upset. Addicts like to have others indulge with them. I went from 125 to 240 in 21 years of marriage. Today I am 176 I had the sleeve on Dec 22, 2021 at 227.9. So I feel better than ever and I am starting to feel like me again. I cant wait to be able to eat full vegan again Now I can go back to the lifestyle I love without being guilted into eating unhealthy. Ive noticed more energy my skin looks amazing Im back at the gym running 3 miles a day until yesterday when I broke a bunch of bones in my foot. So think of it like this - eating is just fuel for this amazing body you have. Like your car - you put good gas in it youd never give it sugar water right because that would ruin the engine. Your body is the same way - enjoy the beautiful healthy foods and feed your body and cells the right fuel. I have teenagers that work they stop at fast food nearly daily It is nice to say Ill wait to eat when we get home. I never leave without a protein shake and the money I save now on food is crazy! Even my husband comments on that. So my protein shakes from 310 Nutrition may be expensive but cheap compared to the before me. I spend $3-5 a day for me on food. My husband eats fast food daily and spend nearly $10 on a meal that is literally killing him. Thats how I see it and it makes me skip and smile. Self love - just rewire your thinking habits and seriously it wont be hard 99% of the time.
  23. I had the bypass almost 6 months gas pain was awful after and the gas pills may as well have been Flintstone vitamins. I had a hard time walking because of complications and having to go back in for surgery 4 days after my bypass as funny as this sounds car rides help also the seat need to be in an up right position though. No more constant gas pain after a few weeks. But I still get burpy alot Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Literally crying right now

You should take your time it takes 20 mins for our brain to register we are full the faster you eat the more food you intake. My surgeon and dietitian told me to chew 20 times. I had my surgery December 22, 2021 and I could not eat that much now. Also you are eating to soon after a meal - grazing is a habit we form which is part of why we led to obesity. I really only eat fish as my meat still and my Husband took me out to dinner I got grilled chicken One breast lasted me 3 meals - just last Sunday. I am down 52 pounds today!! (i only had 70 total as per my surgeon my goal was 80-100) I would try to find a local support group - call your surgeons office see if they can help you. But you keep eating that often you can and will stretch your stomach back out. And you shouldnt feel hunger - I still dont - so it may be your mouth and or brain is hungry out of ha it and boredom. I get up and do dishes or laundry clean the tub whatever until it passes. I have a certain time window for my meals - no i. Between snacking. If I really feel I need something I do it with a Protein Shake. 310 Nutrition has amazing shakes - make them with almond milk. I have all kinds of flavors, Peppermint, chocolate, Smores, vanilla Cake Batter - check them out because those keep me happy if i want something sweet i can drink something that is healthy that taste like a treat! Keep a food journal online or hand written - I do both. If you’re grazing you will be y at the amount of food and calories your eating in a day! Good luck!

    May 2022 surgery?

Today I had my follow up appointment with my surgeon. He took one of my stitches out. I have been having pain on my left side in the abdominal region. He said that it was a seroma (collection of fluid) that should go away in one to two weeks. My face looks smaller today. I hope it will catch up with the rest of my body. The surgeon also asked if I would like to see some of my operation. He showed me what it was like inside my tummy and where he had removed some adhesions. It was pretty cool. Glad that things have gone okay.
