    Dysphagia

I don't think the sore throat is from the tube if you are already a week out; that usually resolves in a day or so. I think what's more likely is that you're taking sips/swallows that are too big or too frequent. I would SLOW DOWN and see if that helps. The burping/hiccupping happens to me when I eat too much or too fast, in addition to the throat pain, which did get better. Let us know how it goes!

I was told by my surgeon that his NHS waiting list was three years, he did my operation privately within 4 months of my initial consultation and that was only that long because he gave me two months of that to quit smoking. I know it is a lot of money to go down this route but for me it has been worth every penny.

    Hello! New here

I was diagnosed about 10 years ago with sleep apnea and given a CPAP machine that I don't use (I know, not good). Having had my colon removed and now having a j-pouch, I have many bowel movements a day since a pouch does not absorb water like a colon does, nor does it hold as much stool (basically I have chronic diarrhea). I read on another forum that a woman who had both procedures said her life has been hell (this post was from 9+ years ago though) since having the sleeve done and having a j-pouch. She said that food goes right through her, I guess since there is only so much room in the stomach and then the pouch being the way it is? Another woman who I am speaking to who had both procedures done said she had the same issue at first, but it got better. She now takes Lomotil twice in the evening so she doesn't have to go so much during the night, but can handle the extra bowel movements during the day. I'm going to meet with my colorectal surgeon this week (he didn't perform my surgery but is the one who I've been seeing for quite a while now) to go over everything again. It's odd how some doctors say it's fine and others say no way.

You will often have stalls of a few weeks at a time. That's the nature of weight loss. You may go up a pound or two just because of fluid balance (pooping, peeing, salty foods, etc), but it will come off again if you follow the plan. My surgery center also does not use a set number of calories. When I was 4 months out I told the nutritionist that I was eating about 800-1000 calories a day and she said that seemed in the right range. I'm 5 months out and eat about 900-1100 most days. I weigh every day that I'm home (I travel a lot). it helps me feel like I'm on track, but I don't worry if the number goes slightly up or doesn't move for a few days/week. It's normal, and I just look at the trends.

    Sleeping on incisions

I sleep on my stomach and it took me about 3 weeks before I could comfortably lie on my stomach again. I didn't have staples. I do notice that I now often wake up on my back, but I seem to fall asleep better on my stomach.
  6. And here we are, two weeks out and still no surgery date. Again, the constant run around is absolutely mind-blowing. However, surgery has open up to twice a week rather then one surgery a week, so hopeful we can get scheduled for April still. Remaining optimistic but it is definitely starting to get hard 🙄😫

I hate studies lol. Were the diabetics adding sugar to the coffee or pairing it with a sweet treat? Here's another study. They go on forever. https://www.diabetes.co.uk/news/2012/jan/three-cups-of-black-tea-each-day-could-help-reduce-risk-of-diabetes-91048824.html

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Tomorrow I start my 2 week diet and I was having some major anxiety and urges to eat junk in a last ditch effort to qualm my cravings? I'm not sure what to call it. I hadn't been craving the stuff before I got to the weekend - I felt like I just wanted to binge on everything and anything delicious. Anyone else experience something similar?

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

I'm a week out from my gastric bypass. Pretty much feel normal but also have a racing heartbeat when doing activities. I think it's from recovery, not eating or you might be dehydrated. I'm also soooooo constipated. I just talked to my nurse who said to take colace for a couple of days or miralax until I can go. They also mentioned this tea called like smooth move. Might give it a shot if the meds don't work. So far nothing. I feel so nauseous being constipated. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Depression

You've heard and read this before: We all lose at our own rates. Comparing with others is just another way we've learned to beat ourselves up over weight. And, most everyone experiences stalls throughout the weight loss process. I'd bet dollars to donuts you started with less excess weight than those around you. The closer to goal you are the slower your weight loss will be. If people around you are losing more it's because they have more to lose. But today is your lucky day as I have the sure fire solution to each of these problems: Get off the scale. You won't be able to compare your weight loss which is apparently causing you some psychic pain. You won't see the depressing stalls. For the important aspects of your program there is one thing you absolutely don't need: A scale. You just need to do what you are doing, following your plan to a T. Keep it up and you will get there. The "No Scale" thing wasn't really my choice. I was too large to weigh on home scales, so I could only weigh at follow-ups. I did learn how not focusing on the scale relieved me of a lot of angst. When I could finally weigh at home I chose not to. All these years later I still don't weigh at home, now only at my annual physicals. When it comes to counting calories... Well, I never did it. My plan was to eat 3 meals per day, each of 3-4 oz protein, 1oz veggies/other. This gets you all your requirements. 3-4 oz protein 3 times per day gets you 60g of protein. 1oz veggies/other 3 times per day will not be chock full of calories. Along with the other simple dos and don'ts we are doing fine. Heck, this is still my plan. So, everything I see says you have a good plan and are following it. This is the path to long term success. Take the win. Continued good luck, Tek

New Here! So Glad I found this group

Hiya and welcome. The pre op diet is a stinker isnt it. What do you need to do for 14 days ? Every doc has a different formula. The second week is easier than the first but you will be so happy when you get to your surgery date and the first process is over. My only advice is, be very kind to yourself, have plenty of time to heal and dont rush things. Good luck

    Dysphagia

Sounds pretty normal for just a week post-op. Remember, they had a tube down your throat during surgery. You're still healing. Eat slowly, allowing less air to formulate. Sip, sip, sip your water all day long.

    No Caffeine

My dietician put me on a pre-surgery diet of 1,300 calories and no caffeine (no surgery date yet). I only drink ONE cup of coffee each day, so I figured no big deal. On day two of no coffee, I was nauseous, tired, had a massive headache and was miserable. I decided “screw this” and went back to one cup per day. I decided that I will give up coffee when I really need to, like during the two week liquid diet before surgery. I will be more motivated then.

    Sleeping on incisions

I was at about 4 weeks before I could stand any pressure on my abdomen, but I had a hiatal hernia repair at the same time as the bypass, which upped the pain levels and pain duration. I slept on my side with a pillow protecting my stomach area, and another wedged behind me to stop me rolling onto my back in my sleep. Sleeping on my back would have been fine, but I didn't want my cat jumping on me. 8kg of cat landing on my gut would have probably sent me to the ER!
  16. I added a collagen powder to the high protein drink I had every second day & also added liquid silica to the mix (BioCeuticals which is a practitioner quality brand - don’t know if you can get it in the US). I also did a couple of 6 week radio frequency treatments to stimulate collagen. Can I say it actually did anything to help my skin? Nope. My nails didn’t get stronger either & I still went through the har loss cycle most of us experience. I have some loose skin on my face & on my body but I did stretch out my skin being overweight so it is to be expected. We all seem to go through a stage where we all look drawn & haggard but once we get into maintenance everything seems to settle. I sometimes wonder if the actual texture of my skin improved but that is more likely down to my more balanced nutrient dense diet & being even more vigilant about my fluid consumption (& maybe regular facials ).
  17. This is in response to the person whom posted the article, I hope your brother is doing ok and I would like to emphasize I am in no way saying you should attempt what I'm about to tell you however it was a shot in the dark as well and I was lucky enough to save my fiancee from a horrible fate...... My gf/fiancee had a duodenal switch surgery which was very successful inside of 2 years her weight stabize at 160 lbs down from 300lbs. Shortly after her target weight was obtained she started having severe depression with suicidal ideation when she had been a very happy person her entire life. After a 6 day stay in the psych ward she went back to work and soon after developed back pain sever enough to leave her screaming in pain at times she had muscle spasticity, difficulty swollowing breathing, peripheral numbness, muscle wasting in legs and arms. I had to put hand rails in our home so she could get around. Incontinence and difficulty swollowing, breathing, and speaking came next.....after much reading and a near refusal to do any mris by the hospital that did surgery.(I suspected they feared a large lawsuit) The reumatologist and neurologist we were referred to both said they suspected als. I became obsessed with finding a way to heal her save her from what was already horrifying illness. I had a lot of trouble sleeping because her breathing scared me and I just sat and read listening to her shallow strained breathing. I swear I read enough studies and articles to have completed medical school. I accumulated almost 220 pages of hand written notes in 2 weeks time I came up with a plan there are many vitamins and antioxidants said to be imbalanced in the brains of pals the problem is supplemented antioxidants take to long to get into the Central nervous system so once the imbalance is bad enough to cause motor neuron death its like a snow ball rolling down a hill getting bigger and bigger that can't be stopped by ingestion due too the blood brain barrier making absorption slow and difficult this is made harder by malabsorbative aspect of surgery. I needed to get large doses into the brain and fast. I have read many article how methamphetamine exposure in small amounts stimulates brain cell growth and protects against cns and brain diseases by causing a small amount of damage stimulateing a neuroprotective effect as well as making the blood brain barrier more permeable these are the supplements I used in order of imprtance. I am not a Dr. I have no medical training please don't think I'm saying I truly know why or how thos worked but it did all supplements taken 3x a day with a small smoked dose of approximately 50-100 mg of street grade methamphetamine. N acetyl cysteine 600 mg Alpha lipoic acid Acetyl l carnitine Curcumin with black pepper Magnesium chileate Coq10 Vitamin e Creatine B vitamin complex (especially folic acid) Egcg Dhea Tart cherry extract Zinc pico lineate As well as a gluten free diet and several other listed in linked article. A full dose of bariatric vitamins 3x a day as well here is a link to a article written by a world renowned neurologist going over all these compounds how they could work and why as well as how they help THE USE OF METHAMPHETAMINE TO FERRY LARGE AMOUNTS INTO THE BRAIN IS DANGEROUS...... It's been hard just getting her to take all supplements 3x a day caused conflict but slowly she got better now the only symptoms she has is occasional incontinence and a mild parkinsonism when she sleeps as well as mild spasticity. She is a bit slow but walks fine talks perfectly and breathing is normal as well as respiration normal and blood [pressure went up too normal range.... https://drcgolding.co.za/integrative-approach-motor-neuron-disease/

    Feeling foggy

You could be a little dehydrated first thing in the morning or your blood pressure could be low. I seem to remember I went through a second big energy drop around the 4 month mark - very lethargic for a few weeks. Are you sleeping well? Have a chat with your medical team & ensure you are getting all the nutrients in you need (are you having regular blood work fine?).

    Too Big for Sleeve?

Hi there. I started our roughly about where you are starting, and went with the sleeve. I am still very early on (6.5 months out) compared to others, but can comment on my experience. I'd always preferred the sleeve, but talked myself into the bypass based on online reading because I was so heavy to begin with. I was never excited about the option, until one of the surgeons I consulted with pushed me (in a good way) to reconsider why I was doing it. Obviously it was going to be my decision, but he emphasized that the statistics are just statistics, and at the end of the day it is a tool that is only going to work - no matter the surgery - if you use it properly. Neither surgery is a magic bullet. That really resonated with me, so I reverted back to my original preference of the sleeve. I would up switching practices, and when I went to the new one, they were perfectly happy with the sleeve as long as I didn't have GERD. I had to get an endoscopy to confirm that was the case. Again, I am still in the honeymoon period, but I am not regretting this choice one bit. I'm really happy with my weight loss to date (80 lbs since the 2 week pre op diet) and I feel amazing. Honestly, I feel lighter than what I actually weigh and better than I have in ages and ages. Even if I never get to a normal BMI, given how heavy I started, even getting to "just" overweight would be game changing. And, I am comfortable with the changes I made to my body, because it was what I preferred among the options I had available to me. I hope some longer-term sleevers who started at similar weights will comment. Some have had incredible success!
  20. Hello, surgery day in 7days 2/28/22! Super nervous and also excited! Finishing up my 2wk pre-op diet this week which is hell!! But, any advice?
  21. I appreciate you sharing your story with me. It is interesting to see both ends of the coin and I know nothing is absolute especially reading off the internet but I always see it will cure it or reduce symptoms. That a huge reason why WLS was an option for me. I used to be a fitness person (or at least for 2 yrs. ) but I was torturing myself. I would do 1200 Calories a day and 4 hours of working out to shed any pounds. This got me to lose 2-5 lbs a week but then would eat something like a bowl of cheerios and gain 5 back. It was disheartening and to only get to 198 naturally and stop, ugh!

    Sleeping on incisions

Like others I had to wait 3 weeks but mainly because of reflux. I had to sleep sitting up until the reflux settled.

    Sleeping on incisions

I think about 3 weeks post op for me too - it was pretty painful to lie on my side (preferred position) before that. And sore to change position. I just slept on my back in bed before that. Good luck Shriner - bet you're feeling a little better every day now.

    Sleeping on incisions

it's been a few years for me, but I think I was able to sleep on my side (my preferred position) at about three weeks out.

    Sleeping on incisions

Yes. I have five incisions, all of which are secured by staples except there is one stitch in the left most incision. The surgeon's PA will take the staples out at the one week follow up.
