  1. I just went in for my third fill. I was at 1.8 still with restriction, but wanted to be tighter so I could lose more weight. My old fill was removed and a new one of 2.3 was put in. However, the next day I had practically no restriction. Why is that? I can eat much than I could before the new fill. Can anyone explain this to me? I'd appreciate it. 3rd Fill 2.3 Now at 232 lbs.

How do I get in 1000-1200 Calories?

Spot on BBJuice, I couldn't agree more, that's exactly what I'm doing (and around 900-1000 cal) exercising and the weight is coming off, a balanced diet is the key!
  3. i have never been to a gym before this journey that i am on. i meet with a personal trainer a few times for her to set my machines/weights for me. she told me how to use the stationary bicycle, treadmill and the eliptical. it took some time to get use to the eliptical, but i love it. 22 min and it burns 377 cals in that alone. then if you do all of the weight machine then you burn another 300 or so cals. i love doing those two things and i also liked the step class that i was doing, but had to stop because my foot is having problems. seeing the ortho on march 1st. i am going to try a basic spin class tomorow. may not be able to walk the next day but going to give it a whirl!! hope your gym experince goes well.
  4. I hear you sister -- I definitely am looking forward to feeling better about myself, increased confidence, and a return of my personality -- also meeting men ... you are not alone and it isn't silly -- that is one of the definite benefits of losing the weight -- to feel good and sexy again! I also understand about not telling everyone - I think that is wise -- just your very closest friends/family for support - no one else needs to know until you are ready to tell them. Some tend to judge and we don't need that - we just need encouragement as this is a definite life changing event and will be ongoing for the rest of our lives. Take care and good luck -- the surgery is really minor and you will do fine. I just got banded on December 3 and feel good -- looking forward to the first fill to feel the restriction, but have already lost about 9 pounds and feeling so much better already.
  5. As long as you're following the rules, you're doing fine! I'm not even a year out yet and have lost a significant amount of weight...especially considering they told me to expect only about a 40lb loss the first year. Enjoy it while it's falling off, the weightloss will slow down, I promise!

    Scared nervous

Congratulations on your decision to have lap-band. It will be the best decision you have ever made. You have so much to look forward to. I had surgery 1-08 and have lost 63 lbs so far. I still have 38 to go. It is not easy however it is the easiest way I have ever lost weight. I have to committ myself everyday that I needed to change my lifestyle. I do the eliptical an hour 5 days a week and keep a journal and of everything I eat. I plan the day before and do the math and just eat 1000 cals a day. I am hungry but I feel so good about myself that it doesn't really matter. I was told by a neighbor that I was looking gorgeous....me the fat girl looking gorgeous??? I am sooo much happier I can not even tell you. You must committ and do whatever it take to be successful. The band cannot do it alone. I wish you the best of luck in your journey and before you know it people will be telling you how gorgeous you look. Just keep your eye on the prize.

    how to maintain

I've kept the same restriction I had, I havent altered my band. Well, I lie a bit actually, I've had a small fill, just to top off as restriction waned after about 18 months (you do lose some Fluid over time). What happened was that I never had tight restriction to lose, didnt need it, didnt want it. I was happy to exercise lots and eat very normally, but with portion control. So moderate restriction suited me fine. Over time, the weight loss got slower and slower and eventually just petered out at around 10kgs past my original goal. My original goal was "generous", it was at the top of my healthy weight range and I knew I'd never stop there, I just set it to shut everyone up who kept saying "you must be realistic". Had I wanted to stop there, I wouldnt have continued to have one or two more small fills. But I just kind of finished losing at around 69kgs (about 150lb give or take). I have not had to unfill, this restriction now serves me well for maintenance. You simply cant go back to "normal". I know of people who have unfilled a bit to stop losing, that's fine, if you have tight restriction you'd probably need to do that. I know of one person who unfilled completely -she's unusual. Most of us still require restriction to maintain and most of us will even require a tiny top up fill every now and then. So I eat pretty much what I ate to lose to maintain - again I did a normal diet WITH carbs such as bread and Pasta, so not too difficult. And I've continued with my running and these days probably MORE than I was running during the faster more steady part of my weight loss (as I got fitter, I did more and more). That's what it takes for me to maintain weight for life, moderate portions, not too many treats and a good 40 minutes to an hour of daily cardio. I eat about 1800 calories a day so I certianly dont feel deprived or too hard done by. But if I had no restriction, my natural appetite drives me to eat more like 2,500 or so, which over time would make me fat again. Even though that's what all the charts say I *should* be able to eat given my height and activity levels.

    how to maintain

I had my lap band surgery in Nov. 08 and am almost at goal. I have lost 75 lbs. and am worried about maintaining the weight. I was told the band is kept slightly restricted for about 2 years so we can adjust to our new eating habits. Is this correct? I really don't understand the maintenance part of this journey. Can someone explain how they are maintaining?
  9. I'm having RNY March 16th. I am new to the forum and would appreciate any support I can get. My family and close friends have been great but they're 'normal' weight. What ever that is. I heard the first 2 days of the pre-op liquid are the worst. I also just started my monthly cycle so I'm totally stressing. Any words of encouragement that helped you please send them my way. Thanks

A bikini, is it a reality....

I have always worn a tankini. Skirt and long torso tank. This summer was my first summer in 15+ years at a normal weight so my skirt was a tad shorter and my top was the bra top variety. My thighs are really saggy and I want to go to the pool or beach and NOT feel self conscious so I will never wear a bikini bottom again, most likely.. Wear what makes YOU feel good. I felt great in my itty bitty bikini when I was in high school and college. I haven't felt great in a suit since until this summer. (This is a hurdle for me, too, as I was a competitive swimmer and still love to swim for exercise.) Shop around, you'll find the right style.

Lapband revised to bypass but scared!

I've had many surgeries...c-section, nephrectomy, gallbladder removal, lapband. When my band slipped I lost all hope and gained all my weight back. I had RNY less than two months ago and I'm already down 50 lbs!!! The doctor took out the lapband at the same time. I only stayed in the hospital 2 days and have had no complications. I was scared to death, but this has been the best weight loss decision i've ever made. In my opinion RNY is the way to go.
  12. I am from Cincinnati and am in the finding-out-information stage. Our insurance doesn't cover any weight loss procedure so we are working to save up the money. Here are my questions: How long pre and post op are you on the liquid diet? During that time can you work out? Are you super weak? I ask because I have three small children, one of whom has special needs, and I am a little apprehensive about how doing banding will affect motherhood. I seem to have a lot of hormonal and thyroid issues and my husband is concerned that the surgery may not work and if it doesn't how am I going to be emotionally. Does anyone else suffer from hormonal issues and have insights to this?

    The time has come

Excellent start to your goal! Always happy to see a positive start... As for "how do you know" you need a fill, I went with the "if I'm losing comfortably" i won't get another fill program. I was only filled TWO times and I have the largest band they can possibly install, why you ask??? Because I'm losing weight at a good rate while ALSO maintaining my ability to eat stuff without being tightened to the point I PB... You do whats best for you, in the end you'll adjust your fills by the rate your losing. Your dr. will push you in a healthy direction! Good Luck!
  14. I'm coming up on 3 months and feel pretty good most days. Still weak in my arms and legs but I attribute that to not getting enough calories. I'm going to the gym an hour a day 5 days a week doing treadmill for about 40 mins and the rest on weights. Still having trouble getting my protein goals but am doing much better on fluids. I can definitely tell a huge difference in my body. It's exciting.
  15. I don't know if this is too personal for some but I need some advice/support. I had my psych eval in January and it was recommended by the psychiatrist that I have 6 months of therapy and then go back and see him. I started in March seeing someone and I have been there 5 times and don't feel any different, got my anti depressant I was taking changed from paxil to wellbutrin 2 weeks ago and haven't noticed anything!! I don't really think I have a problem with depression, the only problem is how I feel about myself, I have no self-esteem and no self-confidence because of my weight which is one of the reasons why I am getting surgery so I can loose weight and feel better about myself physically and mentally. And I have asked numerous times as has my therapist for the results of my eval. and we have seen nothing so we don't know what red flags he got and exactly what he thinks I should be working on!!! Long story short, has anybody had a similiar experience and does therapy and medicine help with this problem, I am afraid they are not going to let me have the surgery!!! Thanks for your time!!! I would love some support on this!! :(

    BMI IS 35

My BMI is 35.7. 5'2 weighing 195. I'm in my 40s with hypertension, prediabetes, and psuedotumor cerebri. All 3 were listed as comorbidities. I have Horizon Omnia insurance and hope as I begin this journey that I will be approved for surgery. My initial consultation is in a few weeks so I would love to get a heads up on the process as well link up with others who have had similar stats. I wonder if I will lose too much weight. I don't think I would look right under 130lbs. Any input, suggestions, and advice is appreciated. Thank you[emoji4] Sent from my LG-LS998 using BariatricPal mobile app
  17. Hello lovely! We have *almost* the same stats, I'm 32, 5'3", and 220 lbs I had the lapband, went down to 127, it flipped, almost killed me, and had it taken out. Gained all the weight back. I was between the sleeve and the RNY, my surgeon recommended the sleeve also for the relatively lower BMI and because the band *worked* for me (both restrictive and not malabsorptive) However, when I told him I USED the band to throw up, and that I only lost weight because of that not because of *restriction* and feeling full, belt the bypass is better for me, so the pouch won't dilate. Also, the bypass is better for gerd and I used to wake up in the middle of the night choking with the band because of GERD. I'm going now for the mini bypass (one anastomosis bypass) in Jan. Hope this helps? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  18. After being banded 1.5 weeks, my doctor decided to move me from liquids to mushies. I was enjoying the great weight loss on the liquid diet and not getting hungry. I'm worried about gaining weight on mushies and solid foods. The doc indicated that I should be on solid foods my next appointment. Are my worries unfounded? He indicated I shouldn't worry about calorie counts, just recognizing feelings of fullness. I don't know what to think of expect.
  19. I totally agree that we should focus on healing, BUT that does not mean we should just take this as an opportunity to get in a bunch of slider foods we won't get to have after we're healed. There is no reason why we can't use this time to both heal AND make healthy choices. I don't even have a functional scale right now to check my weight, so I'm not focused on my weight. I'm focused on both healing AND making the changes in the way that I eat and think that will carry me through for LIFE. There is no way that I'm going to lose time or headway on my progress just because I'm on mushies. I'm in this for the long haul, but I'm not going to sabotage myself by making that haul any longer than necessary. Just my take on it.

    I need a buddy!

Hi! So basically we all have the same fears before surgery. It seems like it has taken over my excitement! So what can you eat now that you're almost 8 weeks post op? How much weight have you lost so far and how are you feeling? Did you experience any complications and where did you have your surgery? Thanks, I appreciate your input!!!
  21. I worked really hard to change my eating before the surgery. I am scheduled for October 14th. I started the process in April and there are many requirements with my doctor including losing 10% of your body weight before surgery. For me that was 28 pounds. As of now, I have lost 30. So I have been eating more fruits and veggies, less snacks. I have also cut out soda as you cannot have that after surgery. That was most difficult for me as I love diet pepsi. The first week was hard, I actually had headaches from the cafeine withdrawl but it has gotten better. When I started the process, I had to attend an orientation session and they stated "Live your life today as if you have had the surgery". I found that to be a very powerful statement and have tried to follow it. I have hit bumps along the way but I feel that I am prepared and ready for my surgery.

    Immunity Changes?

I can say for sure that yes, weight loss has increased my immunity. I have an immune deficiency and one of the reasons I got the surgery was because obesity impedes the immune system and my numbers weren't coming up. My immunoglobulin g (the part of your immune system responsible for protection against bacterial infections and the memory cells) wouldn't go above 300. My immunologist wanted me in the 900 range. 3 weeks after surgery and about 20 lbs down my level went up to 600!!! So YES, weight loss absolutly helps your immunity

    Immunity Changes?

So awesome to hear about your improvements!! And super freaking cool that you have the empirical measure! The act of losing weight (mobilizing and shrinking fat cells) is amazingly powerful. I was diagnosed with polycistic ovarian syndrome back in 2005 (but I'd say symptomatic since 2001). The condition was in full swing while my weight steadily increased. I had it even when I weighed well under 200. By my 3-month follow-up appointment after surgery, my numbers were completely normal. Even though I weighed 207, it was the losing 47 that made the difference. @@Robert Christopherson - Here's a piece about the benefits: http://www.collective-evolution.com/2014/06/02/12-reasons-why-apple-cider-vinegar-will-revolutionize-your-health/, and the excerpt re. immunity: 3. Prevent Candida and Normalize Intestinal Bacteria ACV is full of beneficial acids which are believed to help improve the make up of your intestinal flora. These include acetic acid and malic acid, which have antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties and can help control the spread of the candida fungus in your intestines, a common debhilitating problem with many people’s high sugar diets. 4. Strengthen Your Immune System Your intestinal flora are a big part of your body’s immune system. It makes sense then that improving the conditions for the growth of friendly bacteria with apple cider vinegar can help improve your overall immunity. The malic acid in ACV is also a strong antiviral, perhaps one of the reasons people often say they experience fewer colds when they take apple cider vinegar in Water daily. Additionally, raw and unfiltered apple cider vinegar is said to benefit your lymphatic system by helping to cleanse lymph nodes and break up mucus in the body. Over time this can relieve sinus congestion, reduce colds and alleviate allergies.

Trying To Change My Life :)

I have been a nurse for over 10 years. I don't work in med surg, but in a clinic doing patient ed and teaching on diabetes, weight loss, etc. At least my patients have not ever looked at me like it was crazy I was talking to them about these things, but I felt it. I too have been asked when my baby is due and I tell them 4 years ago (when my last daughter was born!). Congrats to you on your degree and on making the decision!
  25. See the problem is that I do not eat unhealthy, yes I splurge a little, but I can eat healthy and exercise and never lose a pound, but let me eat a hamburger, I will gain 5 lbs just from that. So I already eat well, now I have to lose a considerable amount of weight to be able to exercise since I am almost bed ridden. BTW, I wanted to get it out, I forgot to mention it in my long story, that I am 235lbs. I am supposed to be about 110-120, my bones are so teeny tiny that I have to lose this weight fast. I can't wait until I can live!
