    Losing slowly

I have no idea if this is true. I have heard this also. I can however compare my own results.... I have lost a little faster with the sleeve than I did with the band. I tend to lose slowly but lost 65lbs the first year with the band, and then another 10-15lbs in a few months after that. From 225 to 145. I have lost 63 lbs so far with my sleeve and will be a year post-op in March... I started at a heavier weight this time, but I am also 10 years older and menopausal now lol. I am happy with my slow loss, I have no doubt I will turtle my way to goal with the sleeve. I don't think being revision has much effect on my rate of loss... I think my age, metabolism, and other health issues does.
  2. I had the lapband in 9/13, got pregnant 5/14. I had only lost 25 lbs. it was not planned, but I didn't take precaution either. I was 34 when I got pregnant and had revision when my daughter was 10mo at 35. It's easy to not think of ur goals and weight after babies bc u put their needs and wants come first. Then u might want another and might put it off again. It's up to you but I say get healthy first and then tackle parenthood. It could be harder the other way around. Just my 2 cents.

    Losing slowly

From what I've seen on this and other forums, it does seem to be true. Revisions do seem to lose a bit slower. Not all, but some. I don't really know the reason why, but now I'm curious and may use my Google Fu to look it up

    Help! Advice needed

I too initially went to my first appointment with the band in mind. I have Kaiser, and the facility I went to will no longer do the band. The surgeons said they were doing more revisions than initial surgeries. So I went with VSG. I'm so happy I did. I'm almost 7 months out and down about 75 pounds. The side effects I have experienced are hair loss, gall bladder removal, and I have experienced dumping syndrome twice. But I wouldn't change a thing. My hair will grow back, gall bladder removal is common with large loss of weight regardless of how the weight was lost. And the dumping syndrome is all it's cracked up to be.... So I will not cheat with a cupcake or sliver of cheesecake. Those will never be my normal again. All in all, it's a great deterrent.... Other than that, my BMI is less than 27, I can walk for miles, uphill. I can dance with my granddaughters, run if I want to, climb fences, hike long distances, and jump rope. Other complications... I don't know how to shop for clothing. I don't know what sizes to try on, I don't know what my style is other than putting it on and hoping it hangs right to cover the rolls.... But the high heeled boots I got for Christmas are a good start! It's also much less expensive to go on date night with the hubby. Hot tea at dinner is considerably less expensive than the good Chardonnay. And a shrimp appetizer becomes your whole dinner. Not a day goes by that I don't celebrate having done this. I would recommend it to anyone who isn't afraid of a little hard work, commitment, and determination.

    This makes me so happy!

Congratulations on everything! I hope everything works out with your revision! My name is bilijean and I'm 27 and well. My surgery for the sleeve is schedule in two days (December 30th)!! Hope everything continues to go well
  6. Mommytoethan, From other forums and reading others similar stories, the band getting too tight weeks after a fill is due to lots of scar tissue build up on the band. These people did qualify and had revisions and are pleased with the results. This is not an official medical statement, but, is what I've read of others. I had revision 8 months ago due to esophagus issues and couldn't be happier. My weight loss has been slow, but, I'm ok with it. Just the fact that I live a normal life without all the side effects of the band is worth it all! As far as some of the major risks, leaks, as someone mentioned are minimal. You may end up with bouts of heartburn (acid reflux) that may or may not go away, but, nothing meds can't handle. I had it for the first 6 months and is just about normal now without meds. You do have to take daily Vitamins, B-12, Calcium and possibly Iron supplements and this is because the size of the stomach may not allow you to get all the supplements you need due to the small amount of nutrition we take in. The post-op diet is a bit tougher than the band's post-op, but, very worth the sacrifice. Of course there are much more potential issues, but, I just shared what I've endured. I have no regrets and very much endorse the sleeve. I really like my new WLS lifestyle. Hope this helps some. jake
  7. This is refreshing to read. I have a HH. They are repairing my hernia at the same time as my sleeve. Praying for relief. My surgeon did warn me that it could get worse and revision to a bypass may be in my future. Indeed, it is refreshing to hear. I wish you the best Cindy. I just choose not to take the chance…RNY it is for me and repair of the HH simultaneously.

Hoping for band to sleeve conversion

Thanks! My concern is that I already had the one revision/repair with my slippage. I'm hoping he will still do it. If he won't, then I need to start looking for a Dr around here that will. I've seen a couple others on here that have had it done, so it is possible!

Hoping for band to sleeve conversion

Thank you! You have given me hope! I am just so worried my surgeon won't do it. He told me when I had my revision after the slippage, that if it did it again, that'd be it, nothing else to do.

Hoping for band to sleeve conversion

I had the band in 2011, revision in 2013, and converted to sleeve in 2015 after more problems with the band. I love my sleeve! Good luck.
  12. On my way to the hospital.I did not sleep all night. The day is finally here and I hopefully will by the grace of getting GOD I will come out of this surgery victorious and ready to spring ahead on my new improved life.I have suffered with the lap band since 2004 .I never came close to the amount of weight loss I needed.I have dealt with sliming, frequent trips to the bathroom to puke, carrying plastic bags to stop off on the side of the road to vomit.Obsessed with eating...what could I eat to avoid an episode....weight gain....constant pain and protrusion on or around the port area and acid reflux to no end. I lived with it for so long because I was convinced I could make it work.Other health problems ensued DVT ,gallbladder, breast cancer, hysterectomy and PCOS.These were immediate needs that I attended to with band issues simultaneously.I really tried to make it work....All the weight has returned. I need a reboot in my life and this is my new chapter ..."I want me back"!!! Wish me luck...this site and everyone has really informed me with such useful information and shared experiences..I am grateful. Almost there.....surgery scheduled for 11:30....psyched!

    Wondering

I was banded 11/2014. I was 315lbs before pre op diet and am now 237. I don't exercise so this is all my eating changes. I also had a last minute "maybe I should be getting the sleeve" moment and even made an appointment with my surgeon to ask if I should change. Now if you want to get the sleeve you should. I'm not bashing anyone's WLS decision. But if you have done your research and have made an intelligent decision to get the band don't listen to the hype of other people who don't believe in the band anymore or who had to revise. Because there are plenty of people who revise from sleeve to bypass too! I asked my dr what do I need to do to be success with the band. He said it's easy (my doctor has had a band for over 10 years himself so he is in the best position to tell me). 1. You have to eat slow 2. Show up for follow up appointments the first year at least once a month. It put my mind at ease. I could do that! And I have done that and have been successful. I have had no complications. I have learned to slow down and have not had any stuck issues in months. Read as much as you can and go on you tube and read here and then you will see what is right for you and your personality and talk to your doctor about your concerns. Good luck! I was a wreck right before my surgery. That's totally normal.
  14. It can be pretty tough finding younger people to relate to gastric bypass. I'm carly! I'm 27 but yes I look a lot younger. I originally had the lapband put in January 2010 and now almost six years later I just had it revised to a roux en y on 12/22/2015. I'm still super sore on the big incision on my left but didn't get a drain or anything. Really hoping this decision helps me get my life back
  15. In a few hours I will arrive at the hospital for my revision from lapband to bypass...yay!!!I am so happy....can't sleep..December 28 is finally here!!
  16. I am getting a revision from lapband misery to bypass this morning Decmber 28!
  17. I had the revision to the sleeve on November 18 it was called a Duo Denal Switch and only lost 25 # so far. You should talk to your surgeon about it because the same thing happened to me. I lost 50 pounds and gained 15 back. The new surgeon advised me my sleeve was not done properly. I am happy now except my dr told me to eat 6 times per day and I find this very hard to do because I don't know what to eat anymore and I find when I don't eat 5-6 times per day I don't lose weight but when I do this consistently I lose a pound per day.

    Best decision!

I had the revision to the sleeve on November 16 and only lost 25 # so far. I am running out of options to eat every couple hours. My dr told me to eat 6 times per day but I don't know what to eat anymore. Any suggestions?

    Dating awkwardness

Am I the only person that just doesn't tell the person I am interested in about my surgery? I had the lapband for five years and just had it revised to bypass. Dating has always been awkward and i dread dinner dates. I hate being stared at by the guy and asked why I am eating so slow or why I didn't eat so much. Or even worse when I had the band the constant running I the bathroom to "cough", up food. I was embarrassed of the weight I had gained that caused me to get the band in the first place and even more embarrassed when I still wasn't as skinny as I thought I should be.

    Goal Weight Setting

My surgeon has not given me a goal weight, either. His PA just gave me the average "excess weight lost" percentage range (60-70%) as an idea of what I could expect to lose. That would have put me between 165 and 175, which is still obese for my height (5'2"). Initially, I chose 145 lbs as my personal goal even though I would have still been in the "overweight" category, because it's a weight that I felt OK at in college, and I simply could not wrap my mind around being any smaller than that. But once I really started losing post-op, I revised my goal to 135 lbs, which put me at the top of the "normal" weight range. I'm now at 128.8, just a few pounds heavier than I was in high school! I had to postpone my 6-month follow up until after the holidays, but I'll see what my surgeon has to say then. @@WL WARRIOR - Where did you find the info about working towards a "set point"? Does Dr. Weiner have a website, or has he put out a book? I'd be interested to learn more!

    Who Are You?

Hi Carol. I am from Michigan too. Who was your surgeon? I was banded in Oct 2008 by Dr Kevin Krause/Royal Oak Beaumont. Had a slippage in August 2013, so needed a revision for that. Now hoping I can do a conversion to the sleeve. Need to call his office tomorrow to get this all started again!
  23. I originally got the band in 2010 and did fine with it up until the past year when I started having constant nausea and severe pain on my left side. Originally thought I had a kidney infection, nope just my band majorly slipping and a lovely case of GERD that lead to Barrett's. So yes, got my band out and my roux en y all in one swoop, my abdomen is killing me! The left side where the doctor pulled everything out of feels like my guts are going to come out at any minute. I struggle to sleep comfortably and am just getting overall super frustrated with everything. Am I the only one that dealt with this issue? Ready to get over this and start feeling back to normal

    New and Nervous!

I had RNY gastric bypass surgery 31 months ago and I would recommend GB or sleeve over LB. I have encountered too many patients who had LB and later had to have a revision because of problems with LB. You might also start attending bariatric surgery support group meetings. Generally these are held once per month and are free. That will allow you to meet and talk with people who either are undergoing this process or have recently had surgery.
  25. Got the best Christmas gift I could ever receive! Got my date for band to sleeve revision surgery: February 2nd, 2016! Any February sleevers out there?!
