    Staying regular

I really need the same help here! Miralax was so vile to me I could barely gag it down. I got Milk of Magnesia, which worked the first time, but not after that. Maybe I need to up the dose? I swear I only have a 'movement' maybe once a week, and that's while i'm taking daily Dulcolax gel and Benefiber. My doc said to get a psyllium husk version - but I literally couldn't drink the whole thing with my sleeve. Maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of it at best. Aurgh!! At the RN's suggestion I tried probiotics and they did nothing for me, so after two weeks i quit them.

    How much water?

I'm only a week and a half out and have met my 64oz goal since day after home from hospital. But I was a big water drinker prior to surgery, maybe that's why? Not sure if type of surgery matters, I had gastric bypass. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. Yes, I have heard of this happening...my surgeon was very specific about the compliance with this requirement. I had to loose 6 pounds in 3 weeks, just after comming back from a cruise. There are medical reasons your doctor sets a number he/she wants your weight at...exercise to burn some additional calories in a responsible manner, limit your salt intake, and comply 100% with your pre-op diet. That's what worked for me... Good luck!

    Crazy Burping

Jatoya, That is perfectly normal. It will go away! My first week after surgery, I was thinking "OMG, what have I done? Is this gonna be like this forever?" But it all went away and I feel absolutely wonderful. I walked a lot during my recovery period and I think that helped a lot. I have seen other ppl post on here that they used Gas-x strips to help relieve the gas as well. I didnt use them myself but other ppl swear by them. Good luck with your journey! Remember the first couple of weeks are the hardest; you will get through it. Keep the big picture in mind!

    One week Post = op!

Ok - had my one week post-op check-up today. Lost 3 pounds since surgery day - and wow, I am getting so tired of liquids. My teeth are beginning to feel a bit neglected at this point! Well - thank God for stranined cream soups and Carnation Instant Breakfast. Next appointment and first fill is scheduled for the Friday before Thanksgiving (nov 21?).
  7. I'm suffering from several symptoms of PCOs: weight gain, hirsutism (increased hair growth on the face, arms and belly), irregular and often nonexistent menses, "spotting" and Patches of darker, velvety skin on the legs. I read that the surgery might solve it. Mine is due in less than 2 weeks (yay!). However I am still worried that my eating habits caused some permanent, irreversible damage to my body. For instance, ovarian cysts, which tend to evolve into tumors sometimes. If I lose weight and kiss the other PCOs symptoms goodbye, do the cysts disappear or do they stay for good? If you could tell from your own experiences, I'd love to hear.

Much better topics than on MFP

Sandiburn - I use the MFP application on my phone, and love it for tracking my calories, Protein intake, etc. One day I went on the site & checked out the forums. Like you, I couldn't relate to much of it. Of the millions of people in those forums, not all have a serious weight issue. Some struggle with only 10,15, 20 pounds. In the WLS forums, you don't find any of those people, and who participates here are those who share the lifelong struggle with obesity. I found this forum last week, and now check in every day. LOVE the support, and it's so helpful to read of others struggles AND success. Welcome aboard!

Pre Op Heart Check Month Before Surgery

it is an EKG I would think. They have you undress on top and wear a gown with it open in the front. They they put sticky things on your chest upper like front shoulders, under a breast of them some on your legs and hook wires up to them and then run a machine for about 2-3 minutes and then you are done.

12 Day Post Op Weight Loss

I usually try to avoid replying to these posts about weightloss just a couple days post op being too slow, but I think it's important people get a realistic picture and not just see posts from people with massive weight loss the first week or two. Yes, some people lose a lot the first two weeks, others, like me, don't lose anything the first two weeks. You are only 12 days out!!! You just had MAJOR surgery and your body is trying to heal - that is the only thing you should be focused on right now - healing. You were also pumped full of IV fluids in the hospital and likely weighed more at discharge than when you went in - it takes a while to clear that excess Fluid. Please try to avoid comparing weightloss to anyone - it is a recipe for dissappointment. There are a ton of factors that go into the rate at which we lose - gender (typically men lose faster than women), genetics, how much excess weight you have, how long you have been obese, how much you lost leading up to surgery etc etc etc. So forget about the scale for now, just focus on following your plan - getting your fluids and Protein in, walking etc - the weightloss will come - it will not be linear nor consistent, you will have many stalls along the way (and yes they ARE frustrating, but they end).

    Traveling at 6wks out.

I was headed back to work at 6 weeks, would have much rather been going on vacation!! I was feeling great at that point. I actually could have gone back sooner but I liked having the extra time off to adjust to my life and everything. The fact that you are driving only a couple of hours and staying in house, you will do great. Just be prepared with all the stuff you will need and ENJOY your vacation!! Keep moving while you are there, it really makes you feel better. Good Luck with your journey!!

    Traveling at 6wks out.

you'll be fine. I traveled 22 hrs to get back and was out about 6 weeks as well. Make sure you have Protein powder in baggies, Blender Bottle, Protein Bars, empty Water bottle (to fill up on the plane) I'm not sure if you said you are traveling by plane or not, but I found ordering a diabetic meal (am diabetic as well) was a LOT better than eating the normal food because i had more protein and less carbs/bread like the chicken piece was a lot bigger and there was fruit instead of dessert etc. i found its easy at airports as well, can find chicken caesar salad anywhere and etc.....safe travels!

    On my way

I do not know how it is that each day seems to go by so slowly when you are adjusting old habits and ignoring the temper tantrums that your body is throwing because it wants its junk edibles back. (Sorry, I can't call Twinkies and soda pop "food"). But collectively they go by so fast. At 15 months out, the agnony of that inconvenience is hard to remember. This human machine that I live in operates so much better with the proper fuel and diligent maintenance. Hang in there. All the pre-op stuff and the first couple of months post-op are a right of passage into a healthier place. Even on the pre-op diet (mine was 3 months) I began to feel better. My body was getting the best nutrition it had experience ever, plus I lost 26 pounds. I feel a vitality that I have never had before. I was 62 but felt 90 - a real bad 90. Now I feel like I was designed to feel and am much more alert (thanks to getting off of nine meds), limber, sexy, and happy. The journey has been sooooooo worth the sacrifice.

    I Messed Up

If you haven't already gotten sick from eating the potato chips, then you probably won't. That is NOT license to eat all the chips you want. Are you back on soft solids yet according to your dietary plan? If not, NIX the chips until you're back on solids. Once you're on solids, it's okay to have a chip here and there, just don't let it become an every day or every week thing. The goal (for me) is to eventually eat like a normal person. I'll always have to do my Protein and Water, but I want to be able to incorporate things like a few bites of birthday cake or a small serving of potato chips into my diet. I am NOT on a diet; I'm working on lifestyle changes. The only thing I've found so far that I flat cannot have in my house is cheetos. Baked cheetos are from the devil, IMO and they cannot come into my house because they sit in my pantry and call my name "Lissa, Lissa"! LOL

    new here

I have Blue Choice insurance and they required the 6 month diet too. I think most insurances are doing that now. Use the time well, and it will fly by. Visit here, read the good/bad/ugly, read books (The Lapband Solution and The Lapband Companion are two good ones, available at amazon.com), start going to support groups now. You can learn a lot by talking to people in all stages of pre or post op. I went to the seminar and started going to group last summer, and was banded 3/25/08. I even had a post op tell me I didn't look heavy enough to need surgery (at 5'7" maybe not, but I was 252 lbs in size 2x scrubs for work). I am still 5'7" but I have lost 90 lbs and my 2X is now a baggy large (as soon as money permits I will be a medium) and my clothing has gone from women's 22 to misses 12-14. I am off cholesterol medicine for the first time in about 20 years, and I take one less BP med (I may lose the other one later) and have stopped my GERD med. I will be having a sleep study in the near future to see if the sleep apnea has resolved. Take full advantage of all the resources available. Use this time also to get your head around the changes you will have to make in your eating. You can do it. Good luck with your journey.

    Waiting

Have you called them? I would follow up. I finished all my stuff and was waiting on insurance and when I talked to them they were like oh yeah we'll get that today or next week. Sometimes they just need a gental nudge and reminder you're a person and not just a bunch of words and numbers on paper. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app
  20. I had the vertical sleeve performed by my surgeon on Monday, October 1st, 2012. That is a day that I will always remember, because I know it has changed my life. At my highest weight, or at least the highest weight that I ever saw recorded, I was a total of 413 pounds. I was losing my life because I couldn't get the weight off, no matter what I tried. I had been previously diagnosed with lymphoma cancer in my lungs, I had been treated for chronic lung issues, and then there was the issue of my immune deficiency that was causing me to spend a few days in the hospital every year with pneumonia. I literally was fading away every day. Surgery was not a popular decision. My family refused to talk about it whenever it was brought up into conversation. They would tell me to work harder. They would tell me to eat less. They would tell me that my inability to lose weight was my own fault for just not trying hard enough. That really wears on a person to have to go through that. It was just ridiculous to know that I wasn't supported by the same people who I loved with all of my heart and supported with every bit of my soul. The best thing I ever have done? I learned to block that part of what they were saying to me from reaching the cognitive part of my brain. I didn't care what they had to say anymore. I went through with surgery for me. Maybe a little bit for them, too, but mostly for me. What is this major victory I allude to in my topic title? I sit here, a little over 100 days after surgery, and I am 100 pounds lighter. I still have a LONG way to go, but I have come so far that I am strengthened to continue on the journey. I hit 100 pounds on Friday by the scale at the clinic and I was so excited to see the number that I probably could have hugged my nurse. The moral of my (so far) story? Listen to your heart. Outside sources be damned. Do it for you, because in the long run, "you" is what really matters most. I hope all of my sleeve siblings are well! <3
  21. You know the answer: it's not possible for you to have gained 16 pounds like that. its just a differently calibrated scale, probably along with some travel and time related water weight. I saw my longest plateau around 7 weeks.
  22. Alright, I'm going crazy!!! I'm one week post-op and I need some food...mushies will do!! I can't take anymore soup, broth or jello!! Has anyone started a small amount of mushies such as mashed potato or squash the second week of post-op??
  23. So, I'm 6 weeks post op and this weekend all of a sudden, I can't get anything down without being in the bathroom immediately. Been on typical soft food diet - Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, egg beaters, tuna. This weekend had a protein shake and immediately had chills, dizziness, sweating, cramps and straight to the bathroom. Decided to step back and just have unsweetened tea and water. Both give me the same thing. Odd that the water of all things give me severe cramping and immediate need to go to the bathroom. I was at the tail end of a 10 day stall, so not sure if this is all playing a role? Have lost 6 pounds since Friday. Any thoughts?

19 days later after surgery and this liquid diet sucks

Each surgeon/bariatric group has different guidelines really. Most have you move on to mushies after 3 weeks. Then solids after 5-6 weeks post op. They didn't limit me on my protein brands as far as protein shakes other than to watch the sugar content. Is that the food list they gave you?
