How Long Before I Can Drive?

My surgeon's rule of thumb for everything was "if it hurts don't do it"... and of course not to drive if I was taking my medication (which I only did for a couple of days). I found that the first time I tried to drive it was uncomfortable, so I asked my mom to take over... BUT I drive a standard car, so I had to use both legs and both arms and it wasn't just brake and gas etc. Since I am short I also have to actually extend my foot to properly reach the clutch and that pulled on my lower abs, which pulled on my incisions. Around day 10 though I had no issues at all pain wise. At that point my drain was also removed which made everything easier lol. I truly think it is individual. If you feel comfortable and you aren't taking any narcotics then go for it. Since our surgery is laproscopic we heal much faster so we can go back to our normal lives much quicker.
  2. Went for my post-op visit yesterday and got moved to phase 4 puree! Although I still haven't felt a hunger pain, I was starting to feel sloshy and waterlogged and was super excited to try some food. I had tuna, greek yogurt, chicken, and a Protein shake and managed to get all my Protein and Fluid in...i feel so accomplished I lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks and lots of inches. My surgeon said I should expect bigger loss now that I am adding food and i actually lost 2 more lbs this morning. Enough about me, how is everyone else doing from mid-August?

    Hello Puree!

I'm excited that everyone is excited for the puree phase! I was sleeved 8/20/12, and my post op isn't until 8/6, but I'm already fantasizing about tuna and chicken and basically anything that isn't a protein drink. I'm down 12lbs in the 10 days since surgery, and I'm feeling great! I didn't expect to be up and about and ready to get back to life so soon.
  4. Hi Gail, welcome aboard! My name is Gail also. I'm on day 8 of a 14 day liquids only diet. I'm down 10 lbs. Yay... the liquid diet ain't no joke but its getting better each day. My surgery is scheduled fot th 10 th so i m also to the loosers bench. I know u will enjoy this forum.

    I am scheduled!

Congrats! Sleeved 12/19/13.......so far still loving my sleeve! I just wish I could get to stage 2 of post op diet. My stomach is not having it!
  6. jalleyne1972

    Anyone getting sleeved 12/18?

finally got a confirmed date of 12/19, which is on a Sat, due to the Dr. trying to get everyone in before end of year, found out no pre-op diet for me because of BMI (only if BMI over 60) now the nervousness has set in.

    Nerve Damage

YES! Same situation with me. My right thigh hurts daily and my surgery was 10 months ago. I just bare with it tho because I also have chronic fibromyalgia and pain meds make me ill.
  8. So people talk about rest days and all that. But this video is for 30 days in a row. Is it ok to do it? People exercise everyday right? I hear you are supposed to switch up routines so you can give certain muscles a rest but this is set up so you do the same video 10 days in a row. Is this ok?
  9. I already have started doing the exercises they demonstrated in my class. I'm doing 10 exercises 2x a day. A minute for each. Can't wait until I can do more. I've had 5 back surgeries which makes this more difficult for me, but I'm hanging in there great! ☺

    HELP!!!

Hi hun , why not try some warm clear apple juice. You will feel the warmth of it going through. Are you still taking meds as they will make you that way. The longest I went was 10 weeks. Xx
  11. That is so neat! Maybe we can talk back and forth about ideas, experiences, etc... Makes me feel so much better to talk to someone with the same doc. Other people have amazingly different experiences. Anyway, I was so incredibly lucky as far as the appointment timing. I went to the preop, talked to Tishler for about 10 minutes...basically just about any concerns I may have. The nurse came in just after and said "well, we actually have an appointment open 11 days from now. I pretty sure my jaw dropped! Alba had let me know that the norm would be about 2 to 4 weeks after preop for surgery. I was so excited and suddenly scared out of my mind at the same time. Only because I was not prepared to hear that and you do go for a physical with your primary care doc as well as a quick, no fasting blood test within the week before surgery. And, of course, I suddenly realized I need to go food shopping, grab a heating pad, hibiclens, get babysitters, start the liquid diet and so on and so on. Anyway, I hope you get just as lucky! I'm all set now and happy to be getting it over with sooner rather than later. I should tell you that you really do get used to the liquid diet pretty quickly. It wasn't as bad as I thought and two nurses have called from the hospital to make sure I have all questions answered and everything ready. One of them was so nice and we talked for over an hour. She really put my mind at ease about the surgery, etc... Any questions at all, don't hesitate to ask. You're welcome to email me directly too: LAURIESMAILBOX2@GMAIL.COM TY for the support!

    Feeling sad :(

My partner does not support my "radical and crazy" idea of surgery and that I have not tried "eating less and exercising more" My mum supports my decision.. And I've been too scared to tell anyone else. My surgery is booked in for the 15th dec. going to make Christmas Day pretty horrific but I get 1 week paid office shut down between christmas and new year so fly down to melbourne on the 10th have pre surgery appointment, and surgery on the 15th.. Hospital for 5 days.. 10 days of go slow and hang out with my mum for a bit and fly home on the 2nd jan. My friend who I went to school with wrote a ebook called about nutrition aval at: www.nutritionforweightlosssurgery.com I still have not told her im having surgery.. Im 100kg and don't look huge but still need to get this under control. Im shit scared about living on milkshakes for 2 weeks!
  13. I was sleeved on 10/28. So far I am doing really well. No pain what-so-ever. No problem getting in my Water and Protein. I do get tired easily. I think that my calories are still too low. I'm averaging 600-800 calories per day. I'm also walking a bit, about 7500 steps per day. I do experience hunger sometimes. Usually it's when I see something I really enjoyed before. I think that it's head hunger. So far I've been able to ignore it. I am really looking forward the next food stage.
  14. I had surgery on 10/27/15. I am doing well. It's a real chore getting my water and protein down, but I'm doing it. I am rarely hungry. Even when I am I don't think it's true hunger, I think it's just moments of food nostalgia. I went back to work on 11/02/15, did fine. I walked on the treadmill for the first time today and was amazed how quickly I got tired, but I'm sure that will continue to improve. I am not really excited about starting puréed foods, I'm not hungry and bowls of paste don't tempt me at all.

Who else had a surgery date 10/28/15?

I was sleeved on 10/25, close to the end of the Full Liquids. Thank goodness too cause I need something to chew lol. I work in a kitchen, lots of walking. I returned to work 8 days post op. People were surprised to see me back so soon, but I couldn't stay in my house anymore. I got bored and the tv food commercials were making me head hungry and irritated lol. Work has kept me busy. :-)

    Gain weight

a 10-20 lb gain during year three is VERY common. I'm five years out and still there - and I have to fight like heck just to keep it there - 20 lbs heavier than my lowest weight! I've pretty much given up on losing those 20 lbs because it would take cutting back a lot on my calories, which I'm apparently not willing to do. But...that's what it takes.

    Head Issues - Therapy?

I have been seeing a cognitive therapist for about 1-1/2 years now to help with my Anxiety/Stress Disorder which manifests itself in all destructive manners of putting myself last, perfectionism, inability to say no, panic attacks, and yes -- at times -- binge eating and bad food choices. In order to help with the manifestations, we've had to do a lot of work as to why I'm so anxious and easy to stress. It's taken a lot of work, including learning self-hypnosis, breathing techniques, positive self-talk and finally EMDR therapy. I'd say the last two were the most helpful to me. While I don't come from your "classic" abusive childhood, I did grow up at the hand of some verbal trauma and some traumatic accidents/events. As a result, I was my worst critic and judge -- far more harsh on myself than anyone else. I had friends and some aquantances tell me they observed this about me right away within meeting me. That was a shock. Food became my crutch in that when I was disappointed in myself, I'd actually punish myself with food. It was a temporary satiation of my favorite flavors, only to feel worthless as soon as I finished eating. Then I'd punish myself more for sabotaging my weight loss. It was a vicious cycle. Food also became the main method of soothing my nerves after a long, punishing day at work. It was my reward for making it through. But through a lot of counseling, I see now that was not the best option. Now, I prefer to exercise or just enjoy a TV show. And those foods that I loved are still there, I smell them when my husband makes them. But somehow the connection is no longer there, if anything I feel a connection that those foods will not be good to my body like they used to. It doesn't mean I don't still fight the urges. Those are buried deep in the subconscious. Yesterday, I left a clothing store in a panic after seeing my (smaller) flabby body in those horrible mirrors. Across the street was a Burger King. I thought, "what would be the harm in some chicken nuggets?" Then I used My Fitness Pal to see their nutritional content. Thought, well I have to have them with BBQ sauce, and that's just empty sugar and carbs. And I rationalized that I was just having one of my triggers to anxiety, like in the past. The thought of taking my progress off course for a temporary happiness -- that would've only last 10 minutes before the guilt set in -- just wasn't worth it. I highly recommend therapy, ideally with someone who has helped other WLS patients.
  19. Well, almost! After getting the sleeve on the 13th I head back to work on Wednesday, which just happens to be the day I can start on soft foods and it's my birthday!! I have to say that I had what seems to be a really speedy, successful, and thankfully uneventful recovery. My time in the hospital was fine, I happen to work at the hospital where I had surgery so I had some friendly visitors from colleagues and great care (which I know would have happened no matter what) and I was told all along the way how well I was doing. I had my surgery at 9am on Tuesday and was out around 10. My Dr. said that it went great, that there was minimal bleeding and when I woke up I didn't even have drains in. The PCA pump with my pain meds was a blessing but I didn't use it all that often and I was up and walking that afternoon. I got home on Wednesday after urinating on my own and doing the swallow test to check for leaks. All was well and I was home on my own couch by (everyone else's) dinner time. One thing that was really hard was that I got NO liquids or ice chips my entire stay. I was soo thirsty the whole time so when I got home, sipping juice was fantastic. My first 3 days post op was all juice all the time, 100% juice diluted 1/2 & 1/2 with Water. After that I progressed to Protein shakes and I'm on those until Wednesday. I'm so tired of the sweet shakes so I've been enjoying blended Soups with unflavored powder. I weighed myself the morning of surgery and I was 257.5 and I am now 241 so I'm down 16.5 lbs. in less than 2 weeks. I think that's a good start but I really don't have anything to compare it to- I just know that's better than anything else I've ever done! I'm really looking forward to moving onto the soft foods stage although I'm a little nervous about starting that while I'm back at work. Thankfully the admin I work with had this surgery last year and knows everything I'm going through so I have someone to compare notes to. I am feeling good, happy that I'm almost at the point where I can incorporate some soft healthy foods and I'm actually excited to start planning healthy meals for me and my partner. I'm really enjoying reading everyone's posts and hope to be an active part of this site!

    Needs some suggestions please

Hi, I think beef is very difficult to chew properly, and frankly I think it may be even too early for you to experiment with steaks. You may want to get comfortable with the soft foods first. If you really crave beef then try the meatloaf or Salisbury steak instead. You will need to cut it into very teeny-tiny pieces like a green pea, if you want to eat a beef steak. I have been also worried for a long time that I ate more than I should have. people have reported that they can only eat one cup of food at a time. However, I could always eat 2 cups of food. As long as they are low calorie options (fruits, vegetables, low fat yogurts etc) you may be just fine. For me when I eat my lunch, (I still finished it very quickly, in 10 min), I have to sit and wait 5-10 minutes - I try to browse the internet or read a newspaper until I feel that my stomach is full. Usually, it takes 10-15 minutes for the signal to go from your stomach to your brain and let you know that you are full. If you can manage to wait 5 minutes between "meal courses" you may eventually feel full at some point.

Hi there, Mikee57. I am only 5 weeks out and have had no fills yet, but I can help you out on the exercise question. I recently tore my hamstring (a long and stupid story:) and so I have been doing chair aerobic videos by Paul Eugene. I found them on youtube! There are short ones of about 10 minutes, and I just did a longer 30 minute session. They are straightforward and do get the heart rate up!! Good luck!

    Let's Potty Talk!!

First of all, congrats on your decision to have your band done, May 19 will be here before you know it. And I don't think that there are many topics that you can't ask/talk about on LBT - that is the beauty of this place, it's a fantastic place for information, support and general commadarie (sp). Prior to surgery it wasn't uncommon for me to go 1-2 times a day, now I probably go once every 3 or 4 days, and I'm not constipated I just don't seem to have the need to go all that often (it's probably closer to 3 days than 4). After I had my surgery I didn't have diarhhea (sp) which some people say that they have (could be an anaesthetic reaction - I don't really have any bad reactions to anaesthetic) and some people get constipated. I didn't go for at least a week post surery and when I did it was just a "normal event" not "backed up" or anything. The occasional time where I may feel a bit constipated I generally know it is because I am not taking in enough water/liquids (I have a hard time drinking liquid in general - for some reason I just don't so I have to force myself too). Can't help you with the other question as I don't have that issue but maybe someone else will provide some insight. Best of luck on your journey!

    proud of myself...

My proud moment came when I went to my first appointment on April 4th and found out I lost 10 pounds. I did the happy dance on the scale and my husband just looked at me. ~Snicker~
  25. For women, we have hard time with the lower abdomen region. When you do your cardio.. Do an interval cardio setting 2-3x a week. That will help a lot with the muscles, fat, and skin in that region. It's hard but start off doing 10 mins and working your way up. Elliptical and precor are great for it because you can raise the resistance. Treadmill raise the incline. Elipitcal takes alot of pressure off the knees and ankles, so that may help you. I had 4 abdominal surgeries in 3 years due to renal cancer. So I feel your pain! You will be surprised how the muscles will work back. Just takes dedication and time.
