  1. Well, the voice in my head is nowhere near as functional or healthy as one that questions whether a nice well covered BMI of 25 is healthy enough, a great achievement and easily maintainable. The voice in my head says "stop eating you fat pig, youi're disgusting, you're fat, lose more weight". I'm 5ft 10 and 145lb or so, give or take. I have been lower and I know I cant maintain it without a tight lapband and very small food intake, and that's not healthy forever. So I do have to stop here. But people saying it annoys me. Cant they see my enormous thighs? Cant they see that I'll always be the 5ft 10 "big girl" and that I just want to shrink and shrink until I actually am 5ft 3 and cute and curvy? Cant they see that I've still got a few bulges and bits that arent perfect? Obviously not. But I wish I could see myself how they see me. Nonetheless I think people say it becuase you barely ever see anyone lose significant weight, enough to really change how they look. It freaks them out. They cant picture how you could lose anymore. People are bigger nowadays, they've lost sight of what "normal" looks like. We accept that after babies and when middle age hits, women are going to get squidgy. I know that me watching what I eat (and succeeding) and running or spinning every day gets right up several people's noses because it simply highlights to them that their own well cushioned rears and flabby tummies are a diect result of their own failure to maintain those same behaviours so they lash out at me for it. I love the school I work out now. An entirely female staff with a male principal, most between 30 and 50 and at least 3/4 of us all really into fitness. We can sit and talk about who's doing the next fun run and who is a member of what gym and what classes they do and everyone eats well and its amazing. Nobody there knew me fat and nobody there tells me I'm too skinny. Its really just the shock of seeing you actually shrink that prompts it I think.
  2. Thank you all so much for your responses and support! I think you are all right - I need to be firm (I usually have no problem with this at all in any aspect of my life, but I am just floored b/c I have never had people tell me I am too skinny ever!) and let them know it is under control, healthy, monitored by my doctor, etc. And I think Jachut is right about how people rarely see significant weight loss. And honestly what they are doing is comparing the former 200 lb me with the 130 lb me and of course there is a dramatic difference. Whereas, if they compared the 130 lb me with another healthy 5'2.5" tall 130 lb woman they would see I looked "normal." Does this make sense? Like if they had never SEEN the big me I would look normal to them! Really, I just need to smile and say "thank you" for any compliments and leave it at that.

    Help!!!

Hi Valleygirl, first, I am not post op, however, I do understand where you are coming from. I have had to maintain (eat, eat, eat) my weight for the last month or two in order to meet BMI for approval. At this point I am disgusted with food; the smell, the taste and even the texture upon my tongue. It is revolting and I worry that post op I will not want to eat past the Protein shake phase. I am hoping this is only a phase and I will agin enjoy food as I once did - only in very, very small portions About 7 years ago I had to lose about 40 lbs and went on Atkins. When it was time for me to begin adding carbs in phase 2, 3 and on, I hated it. The taste of food made me ill because I was used to eating the same foods every week. When I broke off of Atkins and tried soda for the first time, it made me ill. After a month or so, I was right back on those old eating habits of high carb, fattening foods. The disgust finally went away. I wonder if this is the same thing happening to you. You get to a point where food is the enemy and you begin to resent it. Or you eat the same things for so long that they no longer appeal to your tastebuds. Have you tried switching up your daily routine (food wise)?
  4. I was sleeved on the 23rd of may and was in the hospital for two days. In those two days I was not hungry couldn't bare to look at anything. Now in starting to feel hungry again. I was used to barely eating and losing 15 lbs now I feel so by hungry I'm afraid to eat and afraid of gaining or something. Is this normal ?

    Scared mom

I don't know if anyone has said this because I didn't read through all the posts. But I have a 1 year old daughter and I want one more as well. I have my surgery scheduled for the 23rd of this month. My doctor told me that the sleeve is the safest surgery for you and baby if you are wanting children in the future and you just have to wait 1-2 years before conceiving. He also told me weight loss will help with conception when the time comes! I'm scared too but I'd rather be healthy and happy <3

    Seizure after Sleeve

happy camper peaking at older posts and saw your post wondering how you were doing??? little hijack update on my part............ per doc i couldn't drive for 6 months post surgery but, understandable driving all over doing this, that everything - being so happy since losing 45 more lbs (total 105) meds were slightly reduced again meds are necessary - no more reduction is possible - but the lower dosage is/was a wonderful unexpected NSV great weight loss for you happy keep up the good work kathy
  7. That's what I was thinking too. Thank you for the input. Isn't the first year the most vital to weight loss for the sleeve? Obviously pregnancy is going to stall that weight loss. I'm trying to figure out if it will effect my long term weight loss goals. Hmmm.

    6 months out!

I'm six months out from surgery. Surgery date was 1-7-13. Starting weight was 392lbs. Height 6ft 1in. Current weight is now 264lbs, for a total loss of 128lbs in 6 months. I have roughly 24 more lbs to lose to be at my goal.

I have thyroid issues too (on full replacement with levoxyl) adn will have the sleeve sometime before the end of the year. I too am curious what others with thyroid issues may have experienced. Friendship Lost over the Band

Your situation seems to be a common one. I have also had some of the same responses to my weight loss and my decision. It is very difficult to lose a friend and I speak from experience. I lost some so called friends when they saw I was losing so much weight. They do not speak to or have anything to do with me now. I can only surmise that "misery loves company" and they were not true friends to begin with. The people I surround myself with now are so happy for me and supportive and want me around for a long time. The hardest person for me to tell was my Mother because she is so conservative about things and I just knew she was going to have a fit. I told her before the surgery and figured I would get it over with. I was braced for a fight. Instead she hugged me and asked what she could do to help. I was shocked! She said she wants me to make it to old age or at least not have weight be the reason I don't make it there. She and my husband are my rock. The people who really love and care about you want you to be healthy and happy. Screw the rest.

Cardio Vs Weight Training For Weight Loss, Wyo?

I do weight training first and cardio afterwards. This is how I was taught at the gym I started going to several years ago. They have had trainers come and go, so I've had sessions with several personal trainers. They have always said to do weight training first, and cardio afterwards. Weight training is a really good way to help the skin issues. I have a lot of muscle on my thighs, so I don't have loose skin there.

    Friendship Lost over the Band

Leftover, I'm so sorry that this has happened. I do agree with Mrsyellis ..... perhaps this person was not the friend that you thought. How do you tell a friend from an acquaintance....the friend's shoulder is wet from your tears. The true friends have been there through good and bad times and supported your choices and respected your decisions. They might have said "are you sure" and listened to your reasoning, but the true friend would not have done what this person has done. This person is one who doesn't know enough about lap banding to understand that you are not "cheating", that you will still have to work as hard as she has making the right food choices and exercising. But have you made the right choice? I believe so. Why? Because only about 5% of the people who lose weight through diet and exercise actually keep off the weight the lose. The other 95% do what we've done.... lose and regain, often multiple times. I hope your former friend is in that 5% but the odds are against her. One day, she may realize what an ass she was to you, but I would never, ever consider that person a close friend regardless of any apologies or whatever.

    It's been a while....

You look marvelous. I am glad you stopped by to check in. It is very encouraging to those of us who are in earlier stages of our journeys to hear from vets like you. I wish more successful people could find time for sharing, but I understand how once you reach goal, you're on to other challenges and not so laser-focused on your weight.

    It's been a while....

Queen...you are my hero. I'm only 11 months out, but have maintained the same weight (10-12 pounds below goal!) for the last 3 months just eating like a normal person. I don't track, I don't count calories and I weigh once/week. I "spot checked" my calories a couple days about a month ago and was around 1400-1600 calories. Definitely something I can live with! So it's good to see I'm not alone and it is possible to maintain this style even years out. And congrats gamergirl....you look great!

    It's been a while....

I haven't yet had my tummy tuck. It's scheduled for Dec 16th. I went in for a consult a few months ago and was told I only needed the skin removed. I must say I'm shocked i didn't need muscle repair. Part of me thinks he's going to open me up and go oops! And that I will meed it anyway but that's probably just paranoia talking. My husband eats without tracking. Never has tracked or monitored. Initially he ate what I did but that's no longer true. It works for him. He doesn't get nearly the Protein he should but he can manage his weight to within a 6-8 lbs up and down. I on the other hand, am extremely carb sensitive. I could eat 700 calories but if my carbs are over 80 gms, I put on weight. So tracking is not optional for me. I also put on weight if I eat much above 1200 calories. If there's one thing I've realized its that one size doesn't fit all either before or after vsg. I think success is a matter of finding what works for you. That's the main thing the surgery did for me --Helped me realize that I was super carb sensitive and I was not going to lose weight without giving them up. I know many many people who succeeded without that--and many who don't.

    Avg monthly weight loss?

After the big initial loss I was losing about 7 lbs per month Now at 5 months and it has slowed down to 4 lbs but I don't gain so I see that it is a positive I imagine I have over a year to go to lose the 58 lbs I still need to lose! Since surgery on 2nd June I am down 58 lbs so I am half way-I had to lose 17 lbs pre surgery

    Today I Joined a Gym!!

I was banded May 3rd, 2011 have lost 62lbs from my highest weight and 55 since May. I NEVER thought I could make the gym work for me but I started about 3 weeks after surgery and have built a nice routine and I SEE the results which is just amazing to me!! I do about 20 min on the ellipitical then go to the machines especially the core / abdominal ones and the butt blaster has really helped my very large hind end! When I am finished with the machines I go back for 20 more minutes of cardio. The weight has been coming off but my body is changing in ways that I know it would not have done with weight loss only. If I wanted to try something new I would go to the gym when it was less crowded and ask for help from staff. The most important thing is to set a gym schedule and if it is a day you go be sure to get there one way or another and not talk yourself out of it. I go two very early morning a week and 2 to 3 afternoons a week and take WED and SUN off. Good luck!!

    Today I Joined a Gym!!

if you have not been to a gym before it is a good idea to go the trainer route. I agree with Papillon Princess. Interview the trainers. You are paying them, it is a job interview for them. I would tell them about the band and what your expectations are from the sessions. If they give you attitude about the band, onto the next interview. At this point in time your core is probably pretty weak. I would talk to the trainer about what is called functional training to start building up your core. Cardio and weight training should be done on separate days. One of the worst things about the biggest loser is that it builds up expectations about how fast people should be loosing weight. The speed at which the contestants lose their weight is unhealthy. Yoga will also help to build your core and is a great way to stretch out.

    lap band to sleeve?

I had lapband in 11/09 and had it deflated in 3/12 then removed in 8/12 due to over a year of complications that resulted in nightly vomiting and finally a slippage. I was successful - lost 90 pounds - but at a huge cost to my health given the complications. When I had it removed (which was actually SUPPOSED to be a replacement but the scar tissue and swelling was so severe once they got in that they had to take it all out), the doctor told me that the LB is no longer seen as a long term surgery, because there are so many complications occurring nowadays. In 12/12, I had VSG. Weight loss has been super slow, which my dr attributes in part to having the LB previously, but it is coming off. Having experienced both, even without the LB complications, I would have done VSG instead because of the pain and "stuck" feeling I got from normal foods - baked chicken, broccoli, spinach, etc - which I eat without concern with the VSG. Of course, everyone's story is different, and some people have the band successfully for life.... but that was my experience and many others I have found since being on VSG Talk.
  21. I'm not a flint girl but I lived in Fenton for 3 years! We moved to NY in 2012. Congrats on your weight loss! I will be sleved June 18. I miss Michigan.
  22. Yeah...i was soooooo cold ALL. THE. TIME. Some people report this as lasting quite long. For me, I stopped feeling I was unnaturally freezing to death around the 9-10 month mark (a couple months after my weight stabilized). At 1.5 years post op, i *think* I feel cold and hot like normal people now...
  23. Hi all! I'm going for my first consultation with to see if I'm eligible to have a revision surgery from Lapband to Sleeve and I'm concerned about my BMI. Right now, my BMI is 34, and I know my insurance will cover the surgery if the revision is medically necessary. I'm having the worst experience with the band (chest pain, GERD, stuck with everything, vomiting, etc). I was banded 3 years ago and I lost 19 pounds with the band in some point, mostly because I was unable to passed food, but as soon as my band got deflated due to complications, I gained all the weight back. I still have high cholesterol, POS and insulin resistance. Anyone have had a revision done with a "lower BMI" in Arizona? Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  24. I'm so sorry to hear this happened to your friend. I'm surprised the doctor/psychologist let her go through with the surgery. I remember having to see the psychologist to make sure I'm mentally prepared & ready to get WLS. They told me they wouldn't do surgery on me until I quit smoking (I'm a social drinker & smoker) & they asked me questions to see if I was addicted to drinking. I passed. I'm not addicted, my social life involves drinking. But I'm fine now since I basically stopped hanging out. I wish your friend saw a psychologist about her depression after surgery. It can be mentally draining with the pain & healing. I'm on anti-depressants so I'm coping well, but I could see why it gets depressing after surgery. Height 5'0" Weight for WLS consultation: 216 lbs. Surgery date: 2/13/17 Goal: - 71 lbs for healthy BMI (about 145 lbs). Current weight: 188 lbs My profile picture is not me. It's my "FitSpiration" body.

    Avg monthly weight loss?

One time I found this calculator online where you could put in your starting weight, what surgery you were having, height, etc and it would calculate your estimated monthly weight loss. I've tried to find it again and have been unsuccessful. If anyone knows where this is, could you post the link? I'll look again and if i find it, I'll attach it. I'm only 6 weeks out so I don't really have enough data to share.
