  1. At 2.5 weeks out, how much food should I be consuming? If I feel hungry between "meals" (If we can call it that!) is it phantom hunger? Is it possible for me to be hungry if my stomach is so small? This is so confusing. I don't want to eat too much, I'm afraid of stretching my stomach and getting used to food too quickly. But what does the hunger mean? I tried drinking instead of eating (bec I'm low on drinking anyway, so kill 2 birds with one stone) but it doesn't help.

    Pooping

it took me a week. That seems to be pretty normal. There's not much in there - plus it takes a few days for your intestines to fully "wake up" from the anesthesia. Be aware that that first BMI can be a doozy. Some people start taking stool softeners or Miralax a few days before to make it easier to pass. May not be a bad idea...

    Pooping

It has been a week since my surgery and i still haven’t pooped. I feel like I have to, but nothing comes out. How long did it take y’all before you had your first poop?

    UMR requirements?

Ok, I swear I read somewhere last week that in November of 2021, UMR cut required dietician visits down to 12 weeks. I need my UMR people to help me out here. LOL I went to Beltline Bariatrics last week and am waiting on my referral to a dietician. This will be my 4th attempt to get approved for WLS.
  5. I had meat 3 weeks post-op, it was in my plan.
  6. I am really nervous about getting dehydrated, which I heard can lead to kidney stones and other complications after WLS. I'd love to hear how everyone manages to get in enough liquids during the day, and what's considered enough at this point. One strange thing for me is that I see others are having a hard time drinking more than a few sips at a time and I have no problem with 2 oz in one shot! Why is this?
  7. I had sleeve placed last week. Sleeve was chosen because I had pre-existing pancreatic insufficiency resulting in a lot of loose stools requiring use of pancreatic enzymes. My GI doc and surgeon thought sleeve would cause less problem with malabsorption and further diarrhea. As I read, I’m seeing a large number of sleeve patients develop severe reflux/gastritis and new hiatal hernias. Can anyone comment on how often this happens or ways to prevent it? Thank you!
  8. I'd also tell him about the hernia for sure. I went back to my surgeon 7 years after my sleeve with severe hiatal hernia symptoms. He did an EGD, and as soon as I woke up told me he saw the hernia and had scheduled my revision surgery for the following week. Hernia and GERD are two very good reasons to revise to bypass as it should help with both. As others have said though, don't expect as much weight loss with the revision as with the original surgery. One other thought, I had great luck using my sleeve with a combination of time restricted feeding and keto. I only ate between noon and 6pm (lunch at noon, dinner by 6pm, no snacking) and generally followed keto guidelines. This is the insulin control diet regimen recommended by Dr. Jason Fung. I dropped 20 pounds in a couple months and found it was easy as since my sleeve I didn't have a great deal of hunger.

    Week 12 post op

Well I am finally catching up with the rest of my November sleeve buddies. I felt that I have been lagging behind for so long and wanting to be where you all are in your progress. I can finally eat my protein allotment and a tiny amount of vegetables. There is some joy in eating again, I have missed the vegetables and salad more than anything. I almost lived on chicken before my sleeve but its the only thing unacceptable to my new stomach now. I am looking forward to having more energy and va va vroom
  10. Why are you eating meat already at 3 weeks post-op? I wouldn't do a "detox" or a "cleanse" at this point because y ou just had major surgery and your body is healing and adjusting. Just give it some time. You're without energy because your body just had a major trauma. That's normal. Give it some time.

New & Needing Post-Op Diet Advice

I still get a lot of gurgling, especially if I eat too fast or drink with a straw because it allows a lot of air to get in there. I never did the puree stage. I did 2-3 weeks liquids, then soft foods, then regular foods. I skipped pureed because I don't care for that texture. I turned out just fine. 😁

    Confused

Week 4 for me but each doctor has different guidelines. Yes you can add applesauce or unsweetened milk to it.

    Post bypass symptoms and nervous.

My surgeon had me on daily laxatives for the first two weeks post surgery to help with the constipation. Also adding soluble fiber powder to my shakes and protein water.

What week did you guys start eating thinned cream of wheat or thinned oatmeal? Also did you add apple sauce or unsweetened almond milk to it?

New & Needing Post-Op Diet Advice

I'd mention it - if you're not on some kind of PPI, they may put you on one. A lot of surgeons automatically put all of their WLS patients on one for the first 3-6 months after surgery. also, not everyone is ready to move on to the next step. If your stomach is complaining, it's fine to keep at the previous step (in your case, purees) for another week or so before trying again.
  16. at three weeks out you should be following your plan to a "T". You are still healing. You could really muck things up. It's pretty common to have no energy at this point - you just had major surgery, and it takes time to heal. Also, does your plan allow meat at this point? I know plans differ, but I'm pretty sure I was still eating purees at three weeks out.

    Post bypass symptoms and nervous.

constipation is super common right after WLS. It often takes a week - or even a couple days longer - for that first BM. you might want to start taking Miralax or stool softeners, because the first BM is usually a doozy you're probably nauseated because of the constipation. That's very common when you're really backed up. and the red stool - yep - you had surgery on your stomach and intestines, so it's likely from that. Although if you're worried, yes - go to the ER - if nothing else, for peace of mind.
  18. Hey everyone! I'm just coming on here to see if anyone has experienced similar issues or see if this is normal. My nurse is suppose to call me back tomorrow so I am still waiting. I'm 8 days post op from gastric bypass. While the surgical pain has subsided I have been experiencing tachycardia, extreme constipation (haven't had a full bowel movement in 9 days, just little bits here and there), I'm nauseous from pain in my intestines and today when I was able to go a little bit, my stool was red and I haven't had anything to cause that as well as extremely foul smelling. I had a family member who's a physician check me out casually and ask me some questions. They suggested that there might be some internal bleeding but to keep monitoring it and to rest and not move around too much or put stress on my body. I'm reading about things like leaks and I'm so nervous now. I want to know if anyone experienced this post op, like a week out. Should I go to the ER? 19. I had the Gastric Sleeve procedure done almost a month ago. I've had no issues with the Full Liquid Diet stage, but when it came to transitioning to purees, it felt as though my stomach wasn't happy. It was suggested that it could have been the foods I was eating (too acidic, diary, etc) or that they weren't pureed enough. Other suggestions were that I wasn't eating slow enough. But sometimes, as soon as I took one bite my stomach would immediately start gurgling or I'd get the instant pain of acid reflux/heartburn. I am supposed to start "Soft Solids" on Saturday, but I fear with the trouble I faced with the purees...that I might need an extra week. I've had no issues with eating yogurt, jello, pudding, or soup (which is what I've tried to stick with since I know how my body will react). But with anything else I've tried, it is either the immediate gurgling or acid reflux/heartburn feeling. Is this something commonly experienced or something I should inform my doctor about? Kay_G_B

3 weeks post op and I want to detox

I assume this will give you a bowel cleanout? These type of teas also dehydrate you as they draw water to the bowel. I doubt a 'detox' in this way will stop you feeling sluggish. You are likely feeling sluggish because you aren't getting sufficient fluids and the low calorie base, plus your body is still in recovery mode. Take your vitamins and other supplements as recommended, drink your fluids and follow food guidelines for types of foods and volumes. Is meat on post op guidelines for the stage you are at? If not, perhaps you best speak to your nutritionist or surgeon, if so, prepare the meat as instructed and you should be fine. If its a struggle give it a couple of more weeks before attempting again.
  21. I have a box of ballerina tea and I want to do a 5 day detox my energy is poor and I’ve been feeling full and sluggish since I started back eating meat this week is this safe ?

    Confused

Says on my plan week 3 and 4 puree/soft foods but I’m so bad at maths and so confused, because I started purée last Wednesday as instructed so does that mean tomorrow I go onto soft foods? Or another week puree , then soft foods the week after that.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi LilaNicole20, It’s nice to have a surgery buddy. I’m feeling fine, in the middle of tiling a floor. I have 3 protein shakes plus one meal per day for this week. Lean meat 3-4 oz, 2 cups non starchy vegetables. Next week is 4 protein shakes per day. Clear liquids day before surgery. I pray the days fly by as well.
  24. I have been traveling since 4 weeks out from surgery more weeks than not. Here are some ideas (bearing in mind most of my travel is in the US, so I'm not sure what brands you have): Fat free, artificially sweetened or plain greek yogurt. Basically, you want no or low added sugar. You can get that from a grocery store and occasionally in airports (usually the yogurt is full of sugar, but you might get lucky!). Refried beans Ground meat (mince) based dishes like chili, tacos, Ma po Tofu, etc. Soft cheeses Protein drinks (or if you're further out, protein bars) Soup - cream of whatever, bean soup, etc Apple sauce Oatmeal (no sugar added) Banana Mashed veggies like sunchoke, cauliflower, potato, etc Hardboiled eggs with hummus If you are five weeks out and eating normal foods, it's really easy: you can go to a supermarket and buy deli meat, pre chopped veggies/fruit, hummus, cheese, etc. Or at restaurants: chili, soup, the inside of tacos or lasagna, hamburger minus the bun, flaky fish, etc.

Trip planned. Suggestions welcomed for soft foods.

Thank you for this post...I will be travelling when I am at week 5 so on my program that is the beginning of "regular" food if I can tolerate it. The protein oatmeal is something I will need to get my hands on and bring with me since I will be in the Caribbean and not sure what they will have readily available for me to buy. I guess I could take RTD protein shakes with me as well if I check my bag or just take protein powder and still be able to use a carry on only.
