  1. I also would like to join and this will be my first challenge. Although I'm still getting real foods back gradually after 12/16/15 surgery, so I really am at loss on what the realistic goal might be. I'm 322 now, let's just throw out there 305 as the goal. I know that's a lot, (especially as I'm seeing the 3 week lull in loses right now, which is expected) but with my BMI I'd like to give it a shot. I may need to revise the goal come February 1st, and I'm ok with that. Honestly any lose is the true goal, but setting the bar high for myself will help push fluids and Protein, and yep starting that thing called exercise. Thank you VSGSarah3 for taking this hosting on!

On 2016 I am going to...

Happy New Year InnerSurfer Girl....it's been great to follow your posts and good for you for signing up for the writing workshop (I take them as often as I can and find most of them very inspiring). The best advice I can give you is to set aside a few hours every week and just write...don't worry about grammar or flow or anything...just get stuff down on paper. Then at some point you can go back through it and edit and revise. But stick to a schedule and you'll be amazed how much you will have. Also, my goodness...you've posted over 3,000 posts...you already have a book! I have a goal to write a novel this year and hoping I can find the time. But to be honest, I'm so busy having fun that the days just go by! I'm having surgery to remove the extra skin in my abdomen in Feb so I will have some downtime for a month or so after that. Good luck and will be interested in what others goals are....

    Gastric bypass over sleeve

Welcome @@Good apple I initially went into the process dead set on the sleeve. I too had no compelling medical conditions, and was given the choice of either the sleeve or bypass. My BMI when l started the process was 46, but by the time I got to surgery it was a high 39. I had a number of reasons for finally opting for the bypass. One was the GERD issues that some, but definitely not all, experience with the sleeve as post ops. There are even a few who have had to revise from sleeve to bypass for this very reason. I just didn't want to take the chance that I might be one of the unlucky ones to develop this issue. I don't think I could have handled the possibility of a revision down the line. I also thought that I might benefit more having the restrictive and malabsorption components working together to help me reach my ultimate goal weight, and more importantly, maintain it. I had a very wicked sweet tooth and knew the mere "prospect" of dumping would aid me in keeping that in check. I was never really concerned about the Vitamin deficiencies as I've always taken them. Now at five months out I can say in all honestly that I made the right decision. I feel better than I ever have, have more energy, and I'm only 22 pounds away from goal. I've never dumped, had no complications, an easy recovery, and I stick to a very healthy diet. I finally kicked a lifetime soda habit, don't eat bread, Pasta, rice, or sweets. I never could have accomplished any of this on my own, because I've certainly tried. I was always hungry before, no matter how much I ate, but now I'm in control of my life again. It is amazing, simply life changing. I feel reborn! Either procedure is great. If the sleeve had been my only option I would have taken it in a second. But I had a choice and this was the best one for me. Good luck!
  4. I highly highly recommend getting a "belly binder". I got one when i had my lapband in 2008 and had totally forgotten about it when I got my revision on the 12/22. It helps hold me all together and I don't get that my insides are going to pop out of my incisions feeling.

    Band to RNY....Failure to Success?

I'm almost two weeks post op from my revision. It's had its challenging moments I won't lie but after five years of dealing with lapband issues I'm beyond glad to have that crap out of my body. Ended up with a band slip, severe GERD, and Barrett's esophagus

Is the sleeve safe long term?

WL Warrior, What? No! The gastric sleeve is overtaking all other forms of bariatric surgery as the most popular. It has nearly the same effectiveness as the gastric bypass without all of the complications. My surgeon is no longer doing the band because of the problems of slippage and because it does not work long-term. Many band patients are undergoing band-to-sleeve revisions. I don't know who this young doctor is, but the impression he gave you that nobody does the vertical sleeve gastrectomy anymore is totally wrong. Look at the chart on this page: http://connect.asmbs.org/may-2014-bariatric-surgery-growth.html You can see how the popularity of the band is dropping significantly by year as the popularity of the gastric sleeve is growing exponentially. In comparison, the rates of those getting the gastric bypass remain about the same.
  7. I had RNY 9/15/15. Like you, I developed symptoms at about 3 weeks. My surgeon and facility is about 3 hours from my home. I didn't trust anyone locally to deal with my "new anatomy" (small, rural towns). I end up back in the big city for my one moth follow up after nearly a week of struggling to keep anything down. Being the "smart one" I am, I also NPO'd myself the night before my appointment to make sure they could scope me on the spot. Well... I DID get admitted for severe dehydration, but the procedure did not happen until the following day. IV fluids to the extreme. I didn't pee for a long time which had some nurses worried (again really dehydrated), but once I started- LOOK OUT!! EGD dilation #1 occured there, they let me eat the next morning and sent me home on a Friday. By Tuesday, with consent of my surgeon in "big city", I was re-admitted through a local ER and seeing a local GI. He also dilated me. 3 more times, at one weel intervals. After his 3rd (my 4th) he threw in the towel and said I needed to go back to my surgeon recommending revision. I returned to "big city" with complications once again and he had me worked on my an INTERVENTIONALIST GI. Apparently with the approval of my surgeon, she was able to be a little more aggressive with the stricture. This was #5. She was able to take my anastimosis to a 15mm. (When this all began- 3 weeks in- I was at 3mm, a pinhole!). She also shot it with steroids, but wanted me back in two weeks if symptoms persisted. Things improved greatly, this was about Nov 11th. I had a follow up on 12/21 with surgeon and was having some familiar pain, so they agreed to do it again on 12/21. Happily, I was at a 13 (only shrunk 2mm in over a month) and she took it to my max of 18mm again with steroid. This was 6 EGD dilations since Oct 15!!! I have very sensitive skin and tissues. I think my body's response is to swell when it is messed with. So the steroids seemed to keep that inflammation down. The next step was to have a stent stiched in there for a period of like 3 months... I'm very glad it's staying open on its own. Happy note. I am 55 lbs lighter than when this whole journey began. Long story short. Hang in there. Take care of yourself. If something doesn't feel right, see your doctor. The IV's for a month sound more severe than I had it, and trust me, I was miserable. I hope they have your stricture under control. Hope you are feeling lots better soon!!!

How much should i be eating

According to your stats, you are showing the type of surgery that you had as Lap-Band but you are posting under the Gastric Bypass section. So I am guessing that you had a revision from lap-band to RNY gastric bypass surgery. If that is the case then the following applies. First, you should have received specific instructions that detail all the requirements. The types of foods and the volume of foods as a function of time since surgery are detailed in these instructions. After RNY surgery, the most important elements are meeting the daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. To meet your protein requirements, generally you need to rely on protein supplements (Protein shakes and later protein bars) to meet these goals. Your protein requirement is met by a combination of the protein you obtain from meals combined with the protein you obtain from supplements. Right after surgery you meal size is so minuscule (2 ounces per meal) that you must obtain your protein from protein shakes. But as time goes on and your meal volume increases, if you concentrate on consuming high protein meals, you can start to reduce the amount of protein you obtain from supplements. Fluids are a combination of the Water you drink during the day, other drinks such as crystal light, tea, decaf coffee, hot cocoa (using no-sugar added cocoa), milk, the water you consume when you take your Vitamins, the water you use when you make soup. So it is the fluid part of what you consume each day. Vitamins are extremely important if you had RNY surgery. This is because you body no longer converts food into vitamins. Without vitamin supplements, you will become vitamin deficient and many medical conditions will come into play. For the first 4 weeks following surgery - full liquids - 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal Weeks 5-8 - pureed foods - 2 ounces Weeks 9-15 - solid food - 3 ounces And these requirements evolve all the way up to a full cup at 18 months. Also, it really depends on the type of surgery that you underwent. The requirements of gastric sleeve are different than RNY gastric bypass. There is also surgery called mini gastric bypass that has completely different requirements. So follow the doctors directions. He should have provided you with specific detailed directions.
  9. I did not do too well with the band but have been maintaining 150# loss post revision to sleeve in Dec 2011. Not going to claim it has been easy, but sleeve has helped make it possible.
  10. I had revision in June 2015 and have lost 65 pounds since then and am at goal in 10 pounds. No complications but have developed a incisional hernia I am having fixed January 7th.
  11. Good luck! And check out @@CowgirlJane 's posts. She's been very successful with her revision
  12. I had my revision surgery done on Dec 1st and I'm doing very well so far. I had the sleeve done 3 yrs ago and despite losing quite a bit initially, I did not have long term success with it at all. I also had issues with acid reflux after the sleeve. In just 4 weeks I have noticed a significant difference with the bypass regarding my acid reflux...it's gone! So I still have ALOT of work to do, but know that the revision surgery is possible and can be done. Good luck to you!

    had revision on 7/31/2015

I had the same issues with lapband now on Nov 18th of this year I had the mini gastric done and I'm doing so good on it it scares me too I can eat with no vomiting feeling full my stomach let's me know I haven't had any vomiting very little nausea iv lost 29 lbs in 6 weeks I was told you lose weight slower on revisions then if you might be having weight lose surgery for the first time
  14. I had revision from band to sleeve. I had a perfect recovery. I only took pain meds for 2 days and went back to work full time after 7 days. I have had zero complications... I do still have an overproduction of stomach acid but it is easily controlled by taking Prilosec, so I don't consider that a complication. I don't get any heartburn or actual GERD or anything. I no longer have vomiting, sliming, inability to eat certain foods/solids, trips to the ER, fills and emergency unfills, etc... It has been great to be rid of all the painful and embarrassing issues I had with the band. The risk of complications with the Sleeve is very low... I work in a large school and know 6 people besides myself that have had the sleeve and none had any complications, not from during surgery and none longer term. I am the only revision person I know personally, and I had the band for 9 years. Honestly, the first month or two transitioning back from liquids to solids is the only hard part. I love my Sleeve. I love that it is maintanence free not needing fills and unfills. I love that I can eat small meals of things like steak and broccoli, and not worry about getting "stuck" or vomiting. It is everything I wanted the band to be.
  15. What are you revising to? With only 50-60 # to lose I'd encourage a sleeve over RNY, depending if your band didnt; leave to much damage behind. No you won't be able to drink 96oz daily straight out of surgery-- but eventually you will be able to. You build up to it. Be aware of the risk of complications so you'll know what to look for.
  16. I had my band for 14 years and revised to sleeve 4 months ago. Difference is night and day. I PBed, threw up, and slimed all the time with the band particularly in the last few years. Have not had any issues with the sleeve so far. Tried a steak two nights ago for the first time because I was eating at a family event and that was what they had. Had a few bites and knew instinctively I wasn't ready for it so I ate some sides. So far loving the sleeve. While I can eat waaayyyy more than what others post on here, I think it will be the perfect amount to maintain once at goal by making good choices. I would not go back for anything.
  17. I'm considering revision and would prefer gastric sleeve over the other surgeries. Is there anyone that has had success with the sleeve that had no success with the band? Thanks.
  18. I'm considering revision from lap band to gastric sleeve. I've had no success with the band. If your had this revision and are having successful weight loss, please let me know. Thank you.

    Help! Advice needed

I had the same experience when I went for my consolidation back on 2013. Surgeon really was against the band and advised me to go with the sleeve. He said I'd prob only lose 30lbs. Well I was head strong and got the band in 9/13. Lost 25lbs in 8mo but I wasn't really following a diet plan. I had a demanding work schedule and didn't focus on my weight. Them got pregnant in 5/14. Gained 50lbs. Long story short, I just got a revision to sleeve 12/1. Have lost nearly 20lbs so far. I'm happy with band thus far. No throwing up or getting food stuck in band. No sliming. No fills. It's a whole diff experience. It's a huge decision...take ur time and be comfortable with it. Good luck.
  20. I am a resleeve. Got the first one done in Feb 2010 @107 kgs. Got down to 67 kgs by Feb 2011 and then got pregnant. Ate with pregnancy and reached 84 kgs by the time baby came out. Again stated at 84 kgs till the next pregnancy in 2013 and delivered at 92kgs in January 2014. Nothing changed thereafter. Net net: 1. Had 40 kgs weight loss post sleeve in 12 months 2. Got pregnant comfortably and delivered two children naturally post sleeve 3. Gained weight inside the pregnancies and then did not lose any Started gaining weight back around mid 2015. Got to a heavily controlled diet though just enough to not increase the weight. At 94.8 kgs I went back to my doc and consulted for surgical options. I was 33 years old and was done with family multiplication commitments. He recommended we do a resleeve. This time banded resleeve. He did a dye test. Made me drink a liquid and showed me that my stomach had doubled in size since the sleeve. So dilated sleeve was the diagnosis. He saw no issues and a simple procedure with a single incision, no drain like the one last time etc. I was wheeled in in Dec 2015. Surgery was not what was expected. It lasted longer. I had 5 incisions, bigger and more painful than last time. And. A bigger drain. Doc said he has never had a leak but with this one there were several adhesions and he wanted to be doubly sure. My haemoglobin plummeted 2 points from 12.1 on surgery day to 10.1 post op. The pain is unbearable. The fact that there were two other patients with me. Who had a sleeve but had no drain and looked far more comfortable did not help either. Now three days post op, I have lost 1.5 kgs. Though as with the surgery I am now doubtful if I will lose weight with this revision. Haven't been able to sleep due to discomfort. Coughing makes me teary as incisions cry out in pain. Not sure yet if I have taken the right decision or if i will ever come out of the recovery - recovered.
  21. band to revision in 3 wks, scared about complications after reading posts, dont have any dieting, surgeon said to maintain 35 BMI. my family and friends are trying to talk me out of it telling me i only have 50 to 60 pounds and should me able to do it on my own, feel shame that i can't, excited but scared too, afraid i wont be able to drink 96 oz daily.

    32 vs. 36 sleeve

When I saw the title of this topic, I thought the originator was being cute with a reference to men's shirt sleeve lengths. Obviously not. Then I saw "bougie." Please give me a little info on what the numbers mean and what is a "bougie." I have a lapband, but probably will be revising to sleeve. Just a very little will help me know better what to research and formulate questions for my surgeon. Thanks.
  23. Not only is is possible, it's very common. It's one of the main reasons I chose bypass in the first place, honestly. So many people have issues or do not get to their goal with the sleeve. Then again, it works perfectly for some people. If you are not happy with where you are, then a revision may be just right for you.

    360+ pounds?!? help!

I will toss my hat in this ring. The concern I have with the sleeve, it is a fairly new option. Remember everyone jumping up and down and touting the band as the greatest thing ever. In 2014 there were more band > bypass revisions than band installations. Why? Long term data. The Bypass has been around since the 1960's! It has gone through so many revisions it is hard to keep track of them all. This is why the complication rate is so low. It is one of the most well understood procedures you can have. The sleeve, while very easy surgically (comparatively) lacks 10 year studies. It also lacks head to head studies at 5 and 10 years against the bypass. If I were going to wait 10 years, I would look at the studies and make up my mind then. However, after the debacle that was the band, I went with "The Golden Standard" the Bypass. And I do not regret it for even a moment. Surgery October 5th, weight in before surgery 295.9, weight this morning 234.4, 61.4 pounds in 9 weeks? I'll take it. And I feel great. But, to each his own. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do!

    Recovery time.

I found that I was so very tired and needed to concentrate on protein and water. I had a revision surgery and small infection needed 4 weeks off X but everyone recovers at their own pace
