    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I'm scheduled November 30th Melbourne Florida Dr.Tieu. In the lovely pre- op liquid diet I'll get something real in my tummy January 5th it just totally freaks me out. But then I look back and realize it took me a hell of a lot longer than a lil over 2 months to get the weight I am now. Nervous but Ready to go.

Exactly. In maintenance you discover what works for you & allows you to continue to maintain your weight & if that includes the occasional snack that’s fine. I keep macadamia nuts, roasted fava beans & nut squares in my cupboard - lowish fat, lowish carbs, about 100 calories & 3-7g protein. Mainly to have on hand if friends drop by for a drink or cup of tea but I do sometimes have a nibble. Fava beans last week, nuts a couple of weeks ago, nut squares … can’t remember.
  3. Love this!!! Although I never experienced it I did hear rumours of weight limits on some of the water rides at Volcano bay in FL? I avoided it last time I was on holiday in Florida to avoid embarrassment.. however I have a trip booked for Feb now the borders are open and I’m so excited to experience the US as a slimmer me. New hurdles and challenges lay ahead as eating my weight in pancakes and Olive Garden was my all time fave!!

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Hey guys I am 6 almost 7 months out (April 27) and I started measuring my food, by volume not by weight, (so I use measuring cups) I do 1/2 a cup of everything the portions seem accurate, well it’s to much. I’ve mostly just been intuitive eating meaning I eat until I’m full, I try not to over eat but now when I do that there’s sO much left on my plate. Any advice will help.

    December 2018 VGS weight management

The good thing is, you're addressing it now rather than letting the gain get out of hand. 10 pounds in one month is a lot, are you sure there are no health issues that may be contributing to that?

    Week 6 - Down 20lbs PO, 42lbs Total

From the album: Post Op Progress - Sleeved 10/13/21

It's the beginning of Week 6! Starting soft foods today and out of a two week puree stage. I'm also down 20lbs post-op (lost over a full 5 week period). 42lbs down total from May 2021. This is the most weight I've lost all together (previous record was 37lbs). I'm giving myself a reward (a Disney bag) at 50lbs total. Looking forward to it.

    Type of diet?

My program focuses on balance, and not necessarily being low carb or even super low calorie for the long term. At my 2 month appt, they were pushing me to get to at least 1000 calories. That struggle is still real for me and I just closed out month 3. I'm hitting that calorie goal some days, and not so much other days. If you are losing weight and feeling good, I wouldn't worry about changing something that is working. Have you spoken with your surgeon's office to get their advice? That's where I would start.

Pants Size and Other Bariatric Sites

I'm not a woman (women's sizing was obviously invented by misogynists... absolutely terrible) but I will say that when my weight loss slows, it means I'm about to drop inches. One week I only lost 1.6 lbs (I tend to average about 3-5) and lost a full inch off my waist and hips. But even for men, sizing is "creative". My favorite jeans are one particular cut of Wrangler and they tend to run big, so I'm into a 36 in those, but if I buy the Cowboy Cut jeans, I'm a 40. Go figure. I've lost 56 lbs since surgery and in the same style jeans (Lucky 221s) sized down from a 40 to a 34.

    Type of diet?

My clinic's nutritionist was on board the low-cal train—and I actually stopped losing weight for a while because of it (not just the 3-week stall). It all came to a head (there's a post elsewhere on here about this) and I fired her. My new nutritionist has me on a balanced diet of proteins, carbs, and fats, based on my activity level (active). I intake 1000-1400 cals a day depending on actual activity level; most programs are far less. And I feel like all I do is eat and drink 🤣 I will say this: fats are essential for hormone regulation, ESPECIALLY for people for whom estrogen is the primary hormone.

    December 2018 VGS weight management

definitely get on top of that ASAP. It'll be a lot easier to lose 10 lbs than 50! If you're not still weighing, measuring, and logging your food, I'd start there. do keep in mind, though, that a 10-20 lb rebound weight gain is very common in year 3. It's just your body settling into whatever weight it wants to be. That's not to say you're stuck there - you CAN lose it - but if this your body's new "set point", just be aware that it's going to take some work to get down to - and maintain - a lower weight.

Pants Size and Other Bariatric Sites

It’s impossible to predict. I’ve lost about 50 pounds now (5ft9-195lbs) and have lost maybe one pants size. I blame the stretchy jeans though. I think I used to wear them too tight and now they’re kind of loose, so it may be more than one size, but I still have a lot of older jeans in my closet that I still don’t fit, even though I’m at the same weight I was back then. I think my weight has been distributed differently over the years. Hopefully the inches will start coming off quicker now that I’m getting closer to a healthy BMI
  12. I am 3 years out, VGS Dec 2018, and have been maintaining my weight until last month and have gained 10 lbs. it’s not the exercise part that is an issue. It is definitely the less restriction related to food intake.Looking for support to get these 10 lbs off and keep them off.

    no more dairy...ugh! Breakfast?

I'll be honest I don't know---I can't emphasize enough this whole debacle has wreaked such havoc on my system (nearly making it impossible to eat or even drink fluids sometimes) that I'm really, really not looking to begin experimenting on how close I can get to the edge before I begin having problems. There have been times I have felt like I was wasting away vs losing weight--there have been days I haven't even broken 100 calories because of the discomfort and I felt sick, weak, and loopy. The good news is that since I eliminated dairy, whatever component of it is bothering me, I feel better than I have since 3 weeks after my surgery, so for now, anything milk-based is a full embargo. That is my personal decision based on the fact I'm just enjoying getting back to not feeling afraid everything I put in my mouth is going to hurt me. I'm sure it won't be that much of an impediment, there are lots of vegan sources of protein out there and at this point eating isn't really supposed to be fun. Tuna has been enjoyable and comfortable to eat and I think I may expand it into my breakfast regimen.

    Having cold feet….

I'm only 2 months out from sleeve surgery. I had the same thoughts, PLUS just about a year ago finished cancer treatment for Stage 3 melanoma. I was worried that doing the surgery would somehow prevent my body from being able to fight cancer. I tried and tried and tried to lose weight and my body would not budge, even while undergoing cancer treatment. Finally, I decided on surgery when my last PT scan came back clean. Best decision I ever made. Just like other posters have said, it's a tool. There have been so many times I would have turned to food, but thanks to my surgery, I physically could not. I'm down about 60 lbs. and fitting back into clothes I wore 20 years ago. Plus, I eat much healthier than when I was going through cancer treatment. When you can only eat small amounts of food, you make sure it's the most nutritional food for your body. It's a tough decision to make, but you will thank yourself for doing it. Gaining weight

100% agree with Sunny. I log everything I put in my mouth: food, calories, protein, carbs, fat, even vitamins/minerals. That helps me see whether I need to change something to get my body back to losing weight. I don't trust myself if I don't log everything. 😅

    Medications

Do they give you Pain Meds, For how long, Do they really help? I had VSG, with 2 nights in the hospital. While in the hospital they gave me they heavy duty stuff, when discharged I got a script for a non-opioid pain med. Used it for 2 days then pitched the rest. long term post-op you will not be able to take NSAIDs (Aspirin, Ibuprofen, etc.) so you'll want to stock up on acetaminophen. This is due to the risk of stomach ulcers from NSAID use. If you need something stronger (for example for migraines) you'll need to talk to your doctor. Are you able to use full strength Medications? Does the surgery Effect your ability to absorb medications? VSG generally does not create malabsorption, so medications aren't typically impacted. RNY and MGB do create malabsorption, so medication adjustments might be needed. Specifically, if you take extended/delayed release meds, you may need to switch to standard release, with doses spread out over the course of the day. Some med dosages may need to be adjusted as you lose weight and your body changes (cholesterol, blood pressure, insulin, etc.). All of these should be monitored by and discussed with your surgeon and/or PCP.
  17. First night being home and I couldn’t sleep in my bed. I slept on my recliner in the living room. My question is for the people who went through the sleeping on the recliner stage. How long did it take you to get back in your bed comfortably? I just want to get in my bed!! 😭 STATS: I had the RNY and Hernia repair. My surgery date was Nov. 15. Highest starting weight is 360 I’m now 313. 5’8 tall.
  18. I think a lot of us had that same worry. I'm here to tell you that the eating habits DO change. Sometimes, if I'm out, I'll order food like The Before Times... and then after a few bites I'm all "yeah, not doing this". Tonight there was cake. I had a few bites and pushed the rest away. The old me would have et the whole dang thing and gone for seconds (and possibly thirds). The whole point of the surgery, really, is to give you a tool that makes it a bit easier to develop better habits. You know how when you start a diet pre-op, and the first week or few days you're ALL IN on the diet, and the weight starts to come off, and you feel like you can just DO this? Now imagine that for six months. Or a year. Because the weight will just come off. Especially for us—it is, unfairly, still easier and faster for male bariatric patients to lose than female (in general). By the time the weight loss slows down, the habits you need are ingrained.

    Having cold feet….

Complications are fairly rare. And honestly—this is from someone who resisted the surgery because "I can just do it on my own"—I wish I had kicked my own butt 15 years ago. It's not that it's effortless—I have to put in work to lose weight—but it's that when I put in the work, I actually lose the weight, instead of that incredibly frustrating "why isn't this working" garbage. Basically what you're getting is a tool that doesn't allow you to deviate much from the plan. But you still have to reduce eating and get in exercise. The difference is you can't fall off the wagon. Your new anatomy won't allow it, and by the time you get to the point where you could overeat, you'll be so used to tracking what you eat and being careful that it'll be second nature. I mean, I'm only two months out (from sleeve, not bypass) and I already always automagically reach for my phone when I set food down in front of myself.

    Gaining weight

You may be slipping up in minor ways that add up in the long run. Weigh and measure everything. Track your food on an app like Baritastic. It will keep you aware of what you are actually eating. You could also try resetting your set point by returning to all liquids, and build up again to solid foods over several weeks. If you have achieved your goal and stayed there for a while, a bit of weight gain is quite normal.

    28 Weeks Post-Op

if you're following your program and your overall weight is trending down, then don't worry about it. People lose at all different rates depending on several different factors, many of which you have little to no control over (age, gender, starting BMI, metabolic rate, whether or not you lost a lot of weight pre-surgery, body composition (what percentage of your body weight is muscle), etc). The two things you DO have a lot of control over is how closely you follow your program and your activity level. If you do well with those, then you'll be fine. I was a slow loser from the get-go, and I lost 100% of my excess weight. Took almost two years, but I did it. In the end, your commitment to your plan is what determines your success, not your rate of weight loss.

    Having cold feet….

it's pretty normal to have cold feet before a major surgery... I can just tell you my own experience. I spent literally decades trying to lose my excess weight (I'm in my 60s). At my highest, I was well over 300 lbs. I tried over and over and over again to lose it. During my more successful attempts, I'd lose 50 or 60 lbs. And invariably, a couple of months later, the weight would start piling on again until I was back to where I started. During my less successful attempts, I'd lose maybe 20 lbs. Same thing - it was only a matter of time before I'd put it all back on. I had over 200 lbs to lose. I finally accepted the fact that I'd never get that off if I couldn't even keep 50 lbs off. Fewer than 5% of people with a significant weight problem can take off their excess weight and keep it off. Maybe you are one of those lucky few. I was not. Weight loss surgery was the only thing that ever worked for me. as for complications - yes - there's a risk of them, as there is with any surgery. There are even risks associated with having your wisdom teeth removed....or your tonsils. But many of us never have complications - and of those who do, most are minor and "fixable". Major complications are pretty uncommon. You're much more likely to suffer complications from obesity than you are from weight loss surgery.

    Having cold feet….

I have lost and gained plenty in the past. However I honestly have never gone 6 months on my own eating well and exercising like now. I usually have thrown in the towel around month 3-4 when weight loss slows so this is a big improvement. I think I’m just nervous and trying to rationalize not getting it….
  24. I've been looking for a surgeon who can perform weight loss surgery on me. My problem is that I have a BMI of 30, I have hypothyroidism and keep gaining weight. I'm the heaviest I've ever been. I've tried everything and nothing works. Doctors wont even see me because of my BMI. I'm willing to self pay. Does anyone have any recommendations?
  25. Your English cussword made me laugh! Ive already cheated a little and will prob continue to do so. However, after ingeting 250 calories yesterday I managed to gain 4 pounds by today. *sigh*
