    Trying to stay positive

    I had that happen! At two weeks post op I hit a stall, and I gained 5 pounds in 5 days. I was so frustrated! But, here is the way it was explained to me: Right after the surgery your body starts to burn glycogen that is stored in your muscles. After a couple of weeks your muscles start to rebuild their glycogen supply. With the glycogen it has to store Water. All of that extra water it stores leads to weight gain. But, while it's doing that, your body is still burning fat! Don't worry, you'll get through it and the pounds will start coming off!

    lap band and asthma

    Restless, I had a similar thing with heel spurs on the backs of my heels (they're more common underneath) - I had them both removed when I was 18. Tight achilles were part of the problem, but i ahve some sort of congenital defect there and unfortunatly I think my kids have it too as they are developing some bad food problems and heel pain - DH also had surgery for compartment syndrome in his anterior lower legs, a highly unusual problem in a non athlete, so I guess they could be lucky enough to inherit that too. the surgery fixed mine, however it wasnt till I was in my mid 30's I started having heel pain again - I thought it was another spur, but it wasnt, they never got to the bottom of what it was but in the end it was an acupuncturist who cleared it up and the way the pain gradually moved from the outer hollow at the back of my heel to the medial border of my foot makes me suspect it was plantar fasciitis. However, I never ever ever wear closed shoes if I can help it! I can wear sneakers fine and boots, but any sort of court shoe, dress shoe, ugh, I loathe them and I dont wear them - my shoes are always sling backs or mules. My heels have been sensitive and just dont feel good with pressure on them ever since the surgery more than 20 years ago - and now I also have a compulsive habit of collecting funky birkenstocks, lol. As to the asthma, I agree, if it came on with increasing weight it will probably go away. But if you are born asthmatic like my son, losing weight can help you manage it but it wont cure it. Plenty of normal weight otherwise healthy people have life threatening asthma. Same as how weight loss wont fix high blood pressure or cholesterol if they're not caused by weight gain. Some people just have a body chemistry that makes the susceptible to these conditions and they need medication to cure it. DH has lost 70lb and is no longer overweight but he's still on blood pressure medication - his blood pressure did not change at all with weight loss.

    Weight Loss.

    Hi all!!! I started out at my highest in November 2006 - 416 lbs. Then by the time of surgery I was down to 383 lbs. Since the surgery I have gone down to 339 lbs. Now even though I knew I choose this surgery option over the Gastric Bypass (the my surgeon kinda preferred me to have), that I would be loosing slower. But it has been 6 months and as of my 5 month weigh in I had only lost 44 lbs since surgery (5 months ago) Then I had some issues last month and had a complete unfill and have just completely messed up my eating even though I had 5 cc's put back in 2 weeks ago. I feel like I am having a hard time getting control again, and my next fill appointment isn't for 10 more days! My sweet tooth is OUT OF CONTROL and I never weigh myself between my monthly checkups but I broke down and looked last week and it looks like I might have gained 2 lbs. that freaks me out! I hope the change on the scale had to do with my monthly cycle and not actual weight gain?

    Great story! I wish you much success. I am working on this too. In states with insurance. I was sleeved 9/2014. My issue is not just weight gain. I have sever GERD. It's just sucks.   5. Don't give up on yourself. If your hungry all the time, it may be that you have alot of acid in your stomach. Check with you surgeon to see if you can take a PPI (prilosec). I was always hungry and I started taking prilosec and I'm not hungry anymore. How many calories are you consuming on your liquid diet? Are you getting enough protein? Are you exercising at all, like walking? Have you lost inches? Hang in there, it will happen..... Kaiser educated on the dangers of drinking of alcohol. Some weight loss patients have died from drinking alcohol. How manydrinks they had, I don't really know. Also, alcohol can contribute to weight gain.
  6. Hi, protein, protein, protein! Gets metabolism on track. Drink 1 cup of water(8oz) every 2hrs in between meals. I love greek yougurt. I eat 1/2 cup twice daily with one including a full fruit, apple, pear, dried cranberries, etc. this makes for a very large bowl full that you could even use a 1 full meal. Its filling and satisfying. For Breakfast I have whole grain bread 1 slice toasted with 1 tbl peanut butter spread on it and 1 full banana sliced into rounds on top. So good, and it looks like alot so its really satisfying. When I crave something sweet, I slice 1 full apple and dip it in 1 tbl peanut butter, Or. sprinkle the apple with cinnamon and honey or splenda and eat it in a bowl.................. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! Also I love hot green tea (liptons) with 2 bags in cup with refill of boiling water added for 2 more cups, really fights the bloating feeling you can get with eating yougurt or gluten.(carbs,foods with flour). Hope this helps all! Its been 1month with me and I've been post op 7+ yrs with weight gain of 40lbs. I knew I was heading to stretching my little pouch to a point of NO Return. So I'am so glad to have bucked up with a diet change to feeling healthy and to loose that 40lb gain.   7. Hi Friends, I am new to this forum and this is my first Post. firstly this is a very valuable forum with lot of good infromaiton.. I am two weeks post Op and had lost only around 4 lbs and unfortunately i have gained a lb back today... i am about to get my periods as its already due. could it be reason for the weight gain.. also i am currently in the pureed diet stage.. i am walking 20 to 30 mins.. Request you to share you views. i am worried about this sudden weight gain.. Thanks dears.

    Facing My Deepest Fear

    Good morning.... So happy I found this site and have the opportunity to share my weight loss journey. I had surgury last August and have lost close to 70 pounds. My story is not typical although I have struggled with weight all my life. At 20 I lost over 100 pounds and kept it off for 10 years. At 30 illness entered my life and I gained it all back plus. I am so very grateful to have the opportunity to lose weight once again. But I have a fear of the success.... since I know nothing in life is guarenteed. I suffered for 8 years with my weight and my illness and now have the freedom to make the best of my health and I'm scared. For many reasons... but most of all, deep inside, I am indignant. Meaning that I know that the outside is only a shell for what's inside. I was forced to recognize this and accept that no matter how thin one is... it does not solve everything. So this morning I faced this fear that I face everyday.... but today I am chosing to throw caution to the wind and begin to maximize my weight loss potential... taking on an exercise ROUTINE and hoping for the best. My motivations for weight loss are difficult to manage. I am not a vain person but appreciate physical beauty. Somewhere along the line in my struggles I gave up on my own.... as if I was not worthy to enjoy that. I have an emotional and psychological illness that forced me to focus on my mental, emotional and spiritual health. I had to let the physical go... the medications played a huge role in the weight gain and my depression and anxiety kept me from trying to exercise to conteract what was happening to my body. I had to find self worth inside and let go of the rest. As I am losing weight, these issues are surfacing and my fear of success and having it taken away again is huge. Also, having experienced this medical/spirtual transformation... I know in my heart that people will be drawn to me for vain reasons and that upsets me. The advice I try to give myself is to stay in the moment and just do my best which is great... because I am maximum capacity person. I was wondering if anyone out there has a similar challenge/fear going on. I would love to here from you. I don't want to waste anymore time on waiting for the right motivation to come along....     When I was your age, I was a labor-delivery nurse. I was only 150lbs.{6ft tall}. I think the profession contributed to the weight gain! I discovered on this forum,that many lapbanders are nurses & teachers! Something in our "make-up", too busy taking care of others, often neglecting our own needs.
  10. I had surgery in 8/09, lost 50#, had my port flip and have gained back 45#. I didn't like how I got stuck on healthy foods. I got in the habit of adding sauces, gravy, etc.. to be able to eat healthy food. Then I started eating more junk food like ice cream, yogurt, cookies, even an donuts sometimes. Junk food doesn't get stuck. I have been debating for over a year whether to have my port reattached or just have the lapband removed. Also if I did have it fixed, where to have it fixed. I had my surgery in Mexico, my fill doctor is 100 miles away. I am thinking that I want to get it fixed here in my hometown by a doctor that will do my fills and also have a regular councilor/ psychologist on staff that could help me work thru my issues. Do any of your doctors have a councilor on staff for regular sessions to help work thru issues? Thank you for any advice MaggieGT

    First social outing since being banded

    Thank you and thats why i love this site. I read post more than I do post because it is so helpful. This whole experience is and has been and probably at times will be emotionally overwhelming but i know its a good thing. I just take it one day at a time and one event at a time. I need to be able to balance my social life and my banded life. I think half the things I worry about are in my head. I do fell bad about not telling everyone but its on a need to know basis until I'm more comfortable. ( my fear of failure is what holds me back i failed on so many diets, lost weight gained it back and more more times then i wish to remember ) When people commented on the fact I lost weight I was semi honest. I said I replaced some meals with protein shakes and have been walking all of which is true I jsut didnt mention my tool the lap band. Im usually very honest and am like yeah this is the truth take it or leave it its who I am but this time Im more guarded. This tool and change is for me first and Ill share with others as I feel necessary. Everyone on this site so far has been wonderful I read a few post from some people who need to get a grip but there is good and bad everywhere. I am so greatfull for this site and all the great people on it.
  12. I had RNY nearly 18 months ago. I stopped losing after 6 months. I've been very disciplined, following all the rules. I never reached my goal and probably never will. I hover around 172-178 and I'm 5.4 I decided to go for skin removal and am set for surgery next month. All the naysayers have said horrible things. Stuff like, "it's way too painful, worse than RNY", and the more sensitive comments that have to do with weight gain. I don't want to hear about the whole tummy tuck being for nothing if I gain weight again. I won't gain weight. I'm not that person... and I'm not in denial. I am a person who is grateful for every gift I get, and I can handle the challenge of staring sugar in the face and walking away. I'm looking for positive support, someone to tell me that I'm not insane for going through a double hernia repair, abdominoplasty, and lipo on my back all at once, because I'm tired of dragging around the baggage of the fatlady I once was. Thank you.
  13. So I am 12 days post op and have done okay with the weight loss. But today when I weighed myself I gained 1.5 lbs from yesterday. I've been trying not to weigh myself daily but over the past few days I have not moved the scale so I was curious and saw the gain. I'm doing everything they tell me to do. I want to cry!
  14. my insurance requires 4 months with a nutrtionist/dietitian. I am on month 4 now. However my nutrtionist calls me for a monthly weigh in. I guess she allows it for people with busy schedules. I'm a nurse. I'm always busy. My problem is that I gained back my weight. I was 338 at my weigh in and got down to 334 then my mood stablizers meds were up a few milligrams and I now I weigh 246. Should I tell her I'm still 234 and keep trying to lose the weight until I am seen again or should I be honest and tell her about my weight gain? Anyone else have issues like this and still get approved for surgery? Thank you for any advice. Also I am only required to lose one poubd during my weigh ins. I probably physically won't see them for a month or two. I could get back down to 234.
  15. Hi, everyone! I’m 11 months post-op from VSG and I have a bit of a dilemma. I have not been losing any weight as of about 6 weeks ago. I’m 38, 5’5”, and currently yo-yoing between 177 and 178 during every weekly weigh-in. I still want to lose about 30 more pounds to put me in a healthy weight class. Nothing has changed with my eating habits - I still eat very small portions, mostly solid protein, and do not snack much during the day. Since the surgery, I have had some issues with orthostatic hypotension (dizziness from low blood pressure) and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), so I would be very surprised if my diet needed any adjustment right now. I should mention that I am coming off of ten years of disability for early onset degenerative disc disease, so other than twice-weekly physical therapy, exercise has been completely foreign for me, hence the excessive weight gain. I’ve had four neck surgeries and countless back injections and procedures. At my heaviest, I couldn’t stand for more than 10 minutes without excruciating pain in my lower back. However, in the last month, I’ve been feeling well enough to start seeing a personal trainer once a week and easing into a light workout routine (dynamic stretching, light free weights, strength training, etc.). I’m also walking more frequently and for longer distances. My question is this: could the lack of weight loss be due to rebuilding muscle from my new exercise regimen? Or should I try to adjust my food intake again and see what happens? I have my one year checkup with my gastric surgery team coming up next month and I plan to talk to them about this issue, but I wanted to seek out any advice on here, too. Thanks so much in advance!!
  16. I am 5 days out from surgery and have gained about 6 lbs. which is more than I weighed the day of surgery. Someone on one of the other threads said that is not unusual because of all the IV's they give you in the hospital. Is that the case for any of you. I know I have to be patient, but gaining weight is NOT what I am looking for. I , like the rest of you, am eating little. Still on liquids. When will the scales start to go down, not up? Of course would like some instant results like I got on the liver shrink diet when I lost 16 lbs. The day of surgery I was 286 and now am 292. Please let me know this is not unusual. Thanks. I am also so glad we have this group. I have asked some "wild" questions, and have always gotten a response, so am glad we are all here together for support.

    Sunburn and weight gain...

    I worked out on Saturday and Sunday and did pretty well with food, but got a pretty bad sunburn on Sunday. This morning I was up 3.5 pounds! I'm pretty sure it's inflammation from the burn...anyone else experience this?

    Quick Question

    That was a little harsh! Anyway, if you look at the band as a lifestyle change, then I don't believe it does you any favours to unfill just so you can overeat. You can still enjoy the foods on your vacations, just less of them. I would find this even MORE enjoyable as you'll have a lot less guilt (and weight gain)!
  19. Hi everyone, I've been on soft foods for 5 days and I've gained 2.4lbs. Pure panic has set in and surgery regrets and all that fun stuff, but I am a worrier by nature. There's no way I'm eating enough to gain 2 lbs in 5 days but it makes me think I'm doing something wrong. I'm usually getting 2 meals and 1 snack in and I'm having no issue with foods so far. I don't have an appetite but I make sure to get my Protein in. For example, this was what I ate yesterday: Meal 1 - 1.5 oz lean roast, 1 laughing cow wedge, 1 piece of soft beet Snack - babybel Meal 2 - 2 oz baked chicken breast, a few peas and 2 T of tzatziki sauce I could eat about 75% of each meal. I drink a lot of Water. Is this a normal part of recovery or am I doing something wrong?? I fear 2 weeks of liquids has further damaged my metabolism. I'd appreciate any input! Thanks Kelly

    Weight gain on soft foods?

    I wish I could relax! It's not in my nature. Weight gain just doesn't make sense with what I'm consuming. I'll keep getting my water and protein in and not weigh for a few days.

    Exercise and weight gain

    Exercise for anyone can cause weight gain. Two main reasons seem to be not increasing your fluid intake and increasing your muscle mass. Fluid needs to be increased during exercise or else you'll experience water weight. It's so counter intuitive, but water flushes out water retention. It's your bodies way of freaking out and holding on to what it has because it doesn't think it's getting enough. And then of course is muscle gain. We all know by now that muscle weighs more than fat, so if your gaining muscle, the numbers might reflect poorly. That's where body measurements come in handy. Lastly, there's always the potential that your body is in a stall mode while one or both of the above options are taking effect as well. Stalling plus muscle gain or stalling plus water retention. Keep at the exercise, increase your fluids, and check again in a week or two. Your body should get the right idea soon. HW: 328 (02/21/17) CW: 278 (preop 50# disowned)

    My nutritionalist said we also get more blood which weights. Its prob not true weight gain. Stay calm track ur food and stay on track.
  23. Hi Heather- I have been reading this post and wanted to say that I hear your dilema. I was first banded in 2006 and it worked like a charm. I was very happy and lost weight...until........I started having reflux like I couldn't believe!! I was waking up in the middle of the night and I couldn't catch my breath! My throat was burning! It was aweful! Finally after having fluid removed little by little I had an xray that revealed a slip. First step was to remove all the fluid to see if band would move itself back. It didn't. That was the beginning of my dreaded weight gain! The dr.'s answer was to give me a new band. In 2009 I got new band and things just haven't been the same. It's not the same band, but supposedly a new & improved band. I just know its a bigger band that has taken a lot more adjustments for fills. (Funny at the time of getting second band my dr. mentioned a sleeve, but I had no idea what it was) I have gained almost all of my weight back and I am totally discourage & depressed by my new band. I am seriously considering talking to my dr. about a sleeve. From what I gather it people seem to be really happy with it. I am sure there are some drawbacks, although I haven't heard any of them. But keep talking to your doctor and others. Take your time in making your decision then you can be sure you will make the best decision for you! I wish you the best of luck & keep us posted!
  24. I'm very happy with my decision to get the sleeve done but i've been stuck around the same weight for the last 2 months. I dropped 50lbs almost instantly but just last week, I was 278, few days later I was 289. I can't say I eat extremely healthy but I can't say I eat extremely bad. And, of course, I can't consume much food. Why is it soo easy to gain weight, soo quickly? Is it just Water weight? I feel like the weight gain is defeating the purpose.     Am I jumping the gun?

    I have heard that having a BMI to that extreme, it would be quickly moved along to prevent further weight gain and complications. But, I have also heard that a 3 month requirement of trying to lose weight on your own may have to be done. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
