  1. Did you ever get a book about lapband surgery from whoever provided the surgery to you? I did. In that book (it's by a dr. in Australia who was one of the lapband pioneers there), he tells us that the first month after banding is not a weight loss period. At all. It's a period for healing. Your main concern should be getting enough Protein and Water to heal your body. Give yourself a break and try to lose the weight loss mentality for another couple of weeks, maybe. Also, try never to go to bed hungry. Even if you just grab a sugar free Jello or popsicle, that'll help and it'll be enough to allow you to sleep. Just my two cents.

I'm just starting my journey and I started p90x yesterday. Definitely sore today... I've never been one to work out a whole lot, so this is a HUGE challenge for me, but I totally think it's doable! I'll admit, I didn't do everything Tony instructed to do, but one day soon I hope to be able to! I even asked about starting this and my dietician said it was great and it works in conjunction with the high Protein diet bandsters are already on. I'm doing the lean version which is supposed to aimed more towards cardio, therefore more weight loss. And I heard Insanity is way tougher than p90x, by the way. But I guess it really just depends on the person.

    Just a few questions.

There are proabably lots of reasons for the wide variety in weight actually lost. Many folks are not ready to actually do the hard work to shed the big numbers....everyone CAN be successful by following the plan the bariatric team will lay out. One thing to keep in mind is that everyone will lose in different ways and at different speeds because each body's physiology is different. Work the plan and the plan will work!

If you are at the beginning of your weight loss journey, or even half way through I would not recommend this workout. It is really geared for those who are already in good shape that need to get to the next level. I have tried it, and its well beyond my capability. I feel that it would most likely just discourage you. P90x might be a better place to start, even though I believe it is also a rather advanced program. I would recommend the Wii Fit or EA Active on the Wii as a good starting point.

    Will this help me?

It is hard work. The lap band does about 50% of the work for you (in my opinion). With Gastric if you eat the wrong thing you get sick, with lap band you don't get sick. So you have to have the will power not to eat it on your own. I lost 70 lbs after I got the lap band. But then I started pushing it. I got brave and started trying new things. I learned tricks around the band so I could eat more. Well of course this only hurt me because I gained every bit of that weight back. I don't want to discourage you. The lap band is GREAT if you follow all the rules. I am starting my journey over now and I am doing it different this time. Good luck. check out my lap band blog http://biscuitsandexcuses.blogspot.com/

    Quick Questions

I think it's a gimmick, it is not realistic for long term weight loss. I feel as a wls patient it is very important to maintain a healthy normal diet, it is important to get into the habit of eating as much of your protein as possible, as opposed to drinking it via supplements. I may have one protein shake a day, but in no way do I drink it to replace a meal, I will usually have one between breakfast and lunch. The whole point of wls it to stop with programs such as the one you listed. I say stick to your doctors recommendations and try to navigate your diet with wholesome nutritious foods, best of luck to you.

    Just a few questions.

@@mcplu28 That's a good question but one that I don't think there is a simple answer for, I would think dedication, diet and exercise may be the issue but then again it may not be. I would just say don't worry about how much everyone else is or is not losing because we are all completely different so you can't base your presumed weight loss off anyone else's anyway. Look for result from your surgeons patients and the plan he/she has set for you. If you follow plan your plan and eat the foods you are suppose to eat and get some exercise in you will lose weight but how Much nobody knows.
  8. hey all....I am fairly new here and I have not figured out how to add more pics....and another thing, how do you update your weight to reflect on your ticker???
  9. Hello, just found this forum yesterday. I had my lap-band done on July 24th of 2007. So far so good. I'm never hungry, its wonderful and I have NEVER been adjusted........yet! I've lost 61lbs and have about 25lbs left to go. Waahoo, finally I can have a skinny summer....I hope. I'm very nervous though about being able to maintain my weight. Guess I'll worry about that when I actually get there. :tt1:

How much did you lose at 8 weeks ?

I started at 347, lost 34 pre-op (2 months self motivated diet waiting for surgery...it's so much easier when you know there's a light at the end of the tunnel). In the 2 months post op I lost 32 more. I am on the slower side for my size but like previous poster said, I would've lost faster had it not been for pre-op weight loss. I'm happy with it though, it helped prep my mind and body tremendously. I'm 2-1/2 months out now and my total loss just hit 70 lbs. just to add, I didn't lose much the first month. When I could finally hit 700-800 calories that's when my body complied and lost faster. I've lost 5-6 lbs a week a few times and 1/2 lb once in month one.
  11. I'm supposed to eat 1/2 cup, and I could eat more too, but I don't (3/4 cup to maybe 1 cup at most, but I haven't tried). I stop and am fully satisfied for 4 hours or more. Since you're supposed to be eating 1 cup servings, I think you need to get out a measuring cup and measure, and only have that amount of food on your plate. If you are getting hungry before three hours have passed, you need to go in for an adjustment. Also, if you're drinking with your meals, you're sabotaging your success. I've seen it said on here many times that to be successful with weight loss you need to only eat as much as you need to be healthy, not try to see how much you can eat. You also might have stretched your pouch. It can happen with consistant overeating. There's a highly recommended diet that you can find on LBT or with an internet search called the 5 Day Pouch Test.

    It's been a while....

Learning experience. Those two words encapsulate my year after surgery all right. I learned that I can only lose weight if I eat under 42 gms of carbs and under 700 calories. Little wonder I never lost weight without the sleeve! Who could eat so little with an entire stomach?! I learned I would always choose carbs over Protein if left to myself. I learned I didn't have many issues with head hunger, but that I will always always always be addicted to sugar if I allowed myself to eat it. I am still learning to say no to cake and donuts daily. Yup I crave them all the time. I don't have them all the time though and I'm counting that as a victory. It's been an amazing experience. The one thing that I did learn for sure is that building habits was important. Because sleeve capacity DOES increase. And we CAN eat endless quantities of junk. My two sons are normal weight, and my husband and I eat at much as they do in a sitting. So all that's happened is that I eat like a "normal" person now I guess. Very easy to slip and eat crap and gain weight. Just like for my "normal" skinny friends. You're in for quite a year ahead of you. I hope you enjoy the victories and don't let the stalls gets you down.
  13. Hi everyone. So I just joined this app I'm a 17 year old girl. I weigh about 320 and I haven't been able to lose weight easily but I am in this program at my hospital, you meet once a month with a surgeon, occupational therapist, nutritionist, psychologist, and finally a endocrinologist. You have to be in this program for about 6 months in order to be qualified for surgery. I managed to lose a few pounds with this program but I really am struggling to lose it. I just had an appointment Tuesday and this was my 4th month in the program. The surgeon told me that next month, I can make the decision on whether or not I want to go through with surgery. I decided I do want to go through with a surgery and I've decided I wanted the gastric sleeve since it's less risky than the gastric bypass. I've been looking at many before and after pictures of people under the age of 25 and even some older and it does make me excited, hoping that one day I can do a before and after picture like that. My older sister actually had a gastric bypass surgery when she was 23 and she's 25 now and looks great. But, despite my anticipation, I can't help but be terrified. I'm scared of complications, I've had 2 surgeries but they were minor, just tonsils and adenoids, and tubes in my ears, nothing major, the thought of this major surgery scares me. I know it's the right choice for me as I've struggled with my weight since I was just a little girl. I'm sick of being so huge, I want to be able to go out with my friends and not struggle to keep up because I'm always out of breath, I want to go to theme parks and go on rides without fear that I'm too big for the seat belts and bars, I want to be confident, I want to be healthy. But the thought of surgery scares me. I'm scared I might regret getting the surgery. I'm scared there'll be complications. I'm just scared. Has anyone else felt like this before their surgery? Anyone have any advice?
  14. I had my surgery 2 weeks ago and I am still a little sore but really doing well. I am doing about 10 to 20 minutes on the eliptical and some light weights. Today I am starting to eat soft foods. My weight loss has slowed way down which is fine because I lost about 19 pounds in 14 days. Before I was worried I was losing to fast because losing too fast mean gaining more back even faster. But I think I will be fine this time. I'm excited about working out again. And maybe someday I can run a mile again (one of my goals). One other thing is to train my family that my meals are very small now. Yesterday my child cooked dinner for me and tried to give my a large protion which I would have normally ate and went back for seconds. I had to remind her I don't eat that much any more. Poor thing, I think I hurt her feelings. But I ate it; NOT all of it. Just until I felt full; which was about less than half of what she served me. My dad (may he r.i.p) had gastric bypass in 2001. When he came to visit me I would try to feed him a large protion and did not understand how much he really eats. But now I do. I am so so glad I got my lap band.

Banded for One Week and Three Days

I have been there! I find that if I sit at the table, I do much better. I have gotten "stuck" twice. Both times I was eating in the living room. Now I eat at the table! You are doing great with your weight loss!

    Consultation with surgeon/dietician

Congrats on the weight you have lost so far. I have my first consultation next friday april 7th. I am super excited. I've wanted this for over 4 years. My insurance doesnt cover any weight loss surgeries and my family is no supportive at all. Since I'm paying for it myself I 'm assuming I dont have to jump through the hoops of the whole 6 month diet. I wish I could get banded next friday. I'm hoping to get lots of support from this group. I'm finding that i'm obsessed with reading the blogs! LOL Jennifer

Did anyone else have this problem?

I agree. Of course, we all hope we're going to be among the lucky ones who lose weight during the first weeks -- but whether we are or not is almost completely beyond our control. A lot of people lose or gain many pounds of water in the weeks immediately after band surgery. I know it's hard to be patient, especially if you've had to wait a long time to get your band, but hang in there. You are totally normal. Your band just isn't in working order yet -- kind of like a new car that hasn't had the engine installed.

    What I Do

I am a little more than three months out from surgery and 70lbs down. My surgical team asked me what I am doing to be so "successful" and I thought about it and I decide to post those things here. Let me say this, I know I am new to the game. This post is just to share what I am doing. I am no expect and I am sure there are things I can do better. If you are interested read on. 1. I meal plan. Usually on Sunday I cook for the week. I make my Breakfast dish, lunch, and dinner for the week. I also make Protein Peanut Butter balls on this day as well. It helps me save money and have a better idea of what I am eating. 2. I use children's serveware. This helps me to control my portions and using children's silverware helps me to eat slower and take smaller bites 3. I take my Vitamins daily. 5. When I can I measure my food 6. I try to high protein content foods 7. If I snack I eat a high protein food 8. I add Protein powder when I cook whenever I can 9. I only drink Water 10. When I find a trigger food I leave that bad boy alone! 11. Leading up to surgery I read books and articles about VSG 12. I have a weight loss journal that I write in almost everyday 13. I try to regroup quickly. If I do not well one day I make adjustments to eat better the next day 14. I watch videos and read things on BP that have been helpful 15. When I do not meet a goal I make a new goal 16. I remember when that God has given me a gift and I do not want to waste the gift 17. I take water with me whatever I go 18. I use a high protein cookbook 19. I realize that I have not made it across the finish line and I have to keep going 20. I realize that every month my period vexes my weight loss agenda and then it goes away and I prevail! 21. My prayer partner and I talk about my progress every week and she prays for me 22. I have a surgery buddy I am sure there is more than I could be doing. My goal is to be 100lbs in three months time. If I am not there you know I am going be smaller than I am now.

    omg I jogged!!!!

Thanks so much for the support everyone. I am looking forward to going back to the gym tomorrow for my 4th go at jogging. MrsFlipFlops...I am just trying to increase the amount of time running by a tiny amount each time which is why I am adding an extra minute or two if I feel I can. JJ I totally relate to your fear of running/jogging. I have been going to the gym for about 5 years to help me build up my muscles and stamina after an injury and even though I feel as if I get a good workout with the weights and walking it is only in the past week that I have really felt as if I was ready to try jogging again....I failed dismally the last time I tried. I am the most unco-ordinated person around though and am sure I give the others a good laugh when I drop my towel or Water bottle when on the treadmill....I once had my shoe fly off when walking!!!! Jaqcui, your posts definitely have spurred me on to try running as your love for it really comes through in your posts. Vani congratulations on starting to run as well. And yes definitely be careful especially as you have a back problem. I mix up my workouts so I do weights, pilates type of exercises, hydrotherapy on the days I don't feel up to doing weights, walking and now starting to run, so it means that if I am having a day where my shoulder is really playing up I can change what I do.

    Lexapro 10 mg?in band

I take 20 mg of Lexapro a day and have been taking it for 8 years. I even lost over 100 lbs on WW while I was taking Lexapro. So I can't say for sure that it causes me to gain weight or makes it impossible to lose. I was banded on 11/13 and am down about 20 lbs. I have my first fill on 12/23 ... can't wait cuz right now I have no restriction and am keeping off what I've lost by sheer will power.
  24. I would wait until you reach goal weight for the best results. My PS said to maintain for 6-12 months before any surgery for reconstuction.
