How long recovery from the removal?

Every patient and every surgeon is different. I had a band, revision of band, band removal and finally the sleeve. Not trying to make u nervous but I had the most pain after removal. The surgeon said it's is because of a large amount of scar tissue that forms around the band and port that needs to be removed. I did go back to work after 3 days but still had pain for a week or two.
  2. Queen - some people do lose weight post plastics but alot of times you don't. At first it is the Water retention, and then at least for me my appetite went way up due to the metabolic boost. I was lucky to maintain my weight...haha. Some people get that metabolic boost and then for some strange reason don't get a boost in appetite. Also, I had to very limited activity for 6 long weeks... another reason I am sure that I didn't lose weight post plastics. What difference does 5-6 pounds make? ife - I was a revision from band to sleeve. I had a band for 10 long years and never really did well with it but have maintained a very large weight loss post sleeve. There is revision forum that has alot of info and peoples stories. This forum is the sleeve vets forum. some people use 5:2, which is just an intermittant fasting technique, to get to goal, or to lose a regain. None of us encourage this for sleevers in their first year post op...

I also have the MTHFR mutation. I had revision surgery on 10/18/16 and had to use Lovenox shots for 14 days after surgery. My hematologist was on board with the surgery. He felt that I would be better off to have surgery than carry all the extra weight. Since MTHFR can cause an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, it was a reasonable decision. 4. I am now 5 days Post-op band to bypass. I was banded 3 years ago and did great the first year. Then the stomach flu hit me and I got stuck to the point where I couldn't swallow my own saliva and had to rush back to the ED for emergency unfill. My band was never the same after that. I had always had pain in my left shoulder, like most of us had due to the gas build upon only difference was mine lasted until I had the band removed. After my doctor and I tried everything to help, we couldn't fix it. Many trips to the ED later, my doc said it needs to come out. So I started the process all over again and this time I decided to be revised to bypass. When I woke up from surgery (which went flawlessly) the doctor told me she found out why I was having pain in my left ribcage area, below my sternum and in my left shoulder. The left ribcage was from the band or the tubing rubbing against my diaphragm and causing a callus. Which in turn caused the shoulder pain due to the vagus nerve being bothered. The low sternal pain was from my band moving up and down causing inflammation and early signs of erosion. I was so relieved to hear that I wasn't crazy all these years! Recovery Post-op has been great. Better than with the band. I wish I had done this the first time and saved me so much trouble, pain, money and family anguish.
  5. I am in the same boat too. I had my band placed in June of 2008. I started out at 220lbs. I had 3 fills within the first year and that was all I needed. I felt so blessed, initially, to be at my sweet spot. I lost the weight slow, but it came off steadily. After about 3 yrs, I got down to 159lbs. I felt great. Over the last couple of years, my band was feeling too tight. I couldn't tolerate some of the foods I could before and at times, I couldn't even tolerate things like yogurt, smoothies, or thick liquids in the mornings or evenings. My life got so busy and I didn't go to the Dr immediately, but when I finally did, he removed about 2cc. All was well for another year, then it started feeling tight again. This time worse than before. I couldn't eat fish, chicken, some beef, salads, fruits, etc without having to spit it back up. The worst part for me was that some of the food was sitting in my stomach for several hours to days. I recently found a new physician to accept me closer to home. He took out another cc and gave me medication for gastritis. The burning in my throat is gone, which is good and I can swallow things much better. Foods are rarely getting stuck and I am able to take pills without them getting stuck and dissolving in my throat instead (YUK). But now I am having reflux at night, which I didn't have before and when I eat or drink anything, it burns for awhile. I was self pay the first time, but I am now married and my husband's insurance said they would pay for band removal and revision if I had a co-morbidity. Since gaining 25-30lbs back, I have developed high blood pressure, reflux, and my cholesterol although, still in normal range, is bordering the high end. I am so hoping to get revised to the sleeve, but I too am afraid. I am just so tired of feeling tired and fat. I have NO energy and feel depressed. I have no one to talk to about all of this except my husband and although he is encouraging, he isn't a good listener (bless his heart). He wants to FIX everything or offer solutions, when all I need to do is vent my frustrations. Because I had my surgery out of town, the local support groups won't let me attend All my coworkers are thin young women and they don't understand either. I am sorry for the long post. I love this website and the support found here. I wish you all the best!!!!!
  6. Hey Bryn! I was following up to see if you got your revision to bypass! I see you now belong to Gastric Bypass Patients so I assume you did. How are you doing and feeling? Edit: I see, May 9th! Good luck, one week!
  7. Yes on the perfect storm! Ugh! Like I said in a reply above my relationship with food is better than before surgery, but somewhere along the track I grew apathetic (probably because of depression!) and I've hit a brick wall since, so I will absolutely be working on that from here on out. Revision would be something I really seek out hard sometime next year if dietary and activity adjustments just don't work. I don't exercise as much as I want to but I'm hoping with next semester I'll have a more structured schedule and I WILL be putting ~3 hours of treadmill every week minimum. Even if it's just walking, it's something! Thank you all for your kind and thoughtful responses! I will definitely be working on the "things I can change" stuff first and foremost and only really go for revision in due time if my weight doesn't see tremendous benefit down the line.
  8. I had the sleeve and a hiatal hernia repaired and I have severe acid reflux to the point that we are revising to a bypass. One thing that concerns me that I've read on this thread is that people with the sleeve don't have to take Vitamins for the rest of their lives which is false. For both the bypass and the sleeve you need Vitamin supplements for the rest of your life. The choice is of course yours to make but neither is a bad option and IMO bypass isn't only for people with more weight to lose. If you are worried about the reflux you may go with the bypass but the sleeve is much less restrictive which also has pros and cons. With the sleeve, you have the option of eating ice cream, drinking soda, etc. which if those choices are made you won't lose weight. The bypass is more restrictive and will hold you accountable physiologically. Dumping syndrome doesn't usually happen unless you are eating sugar and carbs again holding you accountable because you will feel crappy if you cheat. There are pros and cons to every single surgery ever and complications and risks. You have to figure out what you are most comfortable with good luck!

Not sure who I should tell!

The only people I told about my band to sleeve revision was my mom and aunt since I needed them to take me to the hospital and watch my son. I feel this is a very personal decision and it really isn't anyone's business. I've been starting to eat healthier and talking about my weight loss to a few people at work so they are aware that I'm working to get healthy. They do know that I had surgery but I told them I had a hernia repaired, I didn't lie just didn't tell them I also had a revision. You just need to do what you feel is best and if not telling anyone then don't. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    New To All Of This

I had the band in 2008 and needed to do 6-mo work my primary care doc, education with surgery group, etc. and...lose some weight. so, I can relate but it helped me jump-start some weight loss. I'm in a different state now (literally and figuratively) and learning again...I have a new bariatric surgeon here in NC (was in MD) and we've agreed to move toward the bypass. I gained back some from band (actually to the pre-op weight). I'm scheduled for my revision to bypass surgery July 9 and can't wait. Keep us posted on your journey with all of the insurance, education, etc. We're all here to help. take care

Hi not scheduled but have been struggling with heartburn and have considered a revision just want to follow everyone and see how you all do! I never had heartburn pre sleeve and it is so awful and frustrating [emoji20] This was one of my fears getting surgery as I didn't want to have to revise to rny. I am only 4.5 months out from my sleeve and everyone tells me to give it time but it's just scary. Just trying to be ok with it if this is the path I need to take! I'm right there with you, this reflux is the worst. I'm having revision surgery on Monday and I'm much more nervous this time around than when I got sleeved. At this point I'm ready to get the surgery over with so that I can have some relief from the heartburn.

    so scared

I'm thankful that my spirit lead me to give you some words of encouragement. You do know that you've got this, if you don't know consider yourself informed. Your task now is to calm down because it's a hard task for the body to heal while under a lot of stress. We need you to heal for your son and husband, they need you around. Don't be mad at yourself or hard on yourself for making this decision to have wls. Cry, get it out and then breathe, repeat until it gets easier. My friend had revision surgery in July with complications that scared me from almost not having my surgery this upcoming January. She has recovered nicely, we've attended the Obesity Help Conference and I have met wonderful people like you. We deserve a second chance at an amazing healthy life. Bariatric Pal has been my mental and emotional support, because I'm private and less than a handful of ppl know I'm having this surgery. Emma, anything you want to talk about this is a great platform.

The yahoo group says it's a lap band group but he really isn't doing many bands these days. He is doing more band to sleeve revisions than anything else.

Prior to that I cleaned my refrigerator thoroughly. It was completely orderly. Because I wasn't always cooking he usually ordered out and my refrigerator was wrecked/stuff to the gills with things no one would have eaten for leftovers. B-Side Questions: How often do you clean out your refrigerator/pantry? Anyone in particular that ruins it?

    May bypass

Hello everyone. I’m so glad to see this forum. I’m planning a revision to the mini bypass as well. I was originally sleeved in 2013. As with everyone else, I’m plagued with heartburn and weight gain. I’m planning to self pay and return to my original surgeon. I’m hoping to have my surgery sometime this summer.

I am scheduled for sleeve revision to bypass May 2nd. Who else is having surgery and would like to support each other?
  21. So, back in 2006 I had a band put in....I did pretty well, went from 235 to my lowest was about 148, but I was throwing up a lot. Last year I started just not being able to tolerate the constant throwing up, etc, anymore and back in Feb. they had to take all the Fluid out of my band because I could not keep anything down...AGAIN.....Of course my weight has been up over this past year with my struggles. I'm at about 170 right now. I guess I just wonder if I was puking my guts up nearly every day, and weighed 160ish, how in the world is the sleeve going to work for me if it's so 'much more comfortable' than the band. I'm scheduled for surgery with Dr. Ortiz in Mexico at the OCC July 7th and start my liquid diet June 16th. I'm scared but optimistic too from reading these posts. Even if I just could maintain at about 160ish I'd be content, I just don't want to gain it all back, you know? I just hope and pray that this is the tool I need and that it's not a bust, especially since I am so financially and emotionally invested.
  22. Hello, I am having revision to sleeve 28 December. I am ready because my lapband slipped last year and stopped working. Also the closer it gets, I am eating more even though I run and cycle. My current weight is 210, I have the working out part down, just need and want to lose weight so I can feel better about myself and be lighter on feet and on bike. Want to look better for a 51 year man. I want to run the New York Marathon next year. Good luck to everybody.

    Plastics in Mexico

I am about 7 weeks out from having a lower body lift and a medial thigh lift in Tijuana Mexico. I flew to San Diego and was picked up at the airport and then a week later I was taken back for my flight home. I went to Dr. Victor Gutierrez. who not only is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon but he also has a specialty in Micro-Surgery so his incisions and sewing are the best I have seen anywhere. I spent a whole year going to 10 consults with surgeons in Beverly Hills and LA even talking to a well known surgeon deep in Mexico. But was not happy with the results or the prices. Results of course were the main thing, but a couple that I really liked as in the case of the BH, PS were $40,000 so that knocked that one right out the window. Then I saw some of Dr. Gutierrez's patients reviews on another site and checked out his clinic. I found out he was trained in Israel where the standards are some of the highest in the world and also that he is a micro-surgeon so I started reaching out to his previous patients and really liked what I heard, so I took a leap of faith and went with him and I am so pleased. The year before I went to another TJ clinic, it was a big fancy clinic with white marble and glass, and it turns out 2 of the three procedures that were done need to be revised so I was a little gun shy of going back to TJ, but now I am so happy I did. Dr Gutierrez will also be doing the revisions that I need in the future...
  25. Hey everybody!!! I hope you are all having a fantastic day! I am about 1 1/2 weeks out form surgery (surg date 1/7/16) and yesterday I started to get this weird feeling in my stomach. I am a lap band to sleeve revision and did not have alot of pain. Most of my pain is the incisions. This feeling is hard to describe but it is a combination of tingling at the base of my esophagus and light pulling in my chest/upper stomach. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if I should contact my surgeon or not. I have stuck to my post op diet and have not eaten anything I shouldn't. Should I be concerned?
