  1. I’m 23 and I am my sleeve surgery should be scheduled for April/May after my 6 month insurance requirement is complete. My gyno referred me to the bariatric clinic in October. I was my highest weight, 230, and had just spent 2 months off the pill and gained 15 lbs. I chose surgery because it’s the only permanent solution to PCOS. I might have missed something, but why is everyone changing their birth control?
  2. If you’re paying by insurance, be careful. Most health insurance policies cover only 1 Bariatric surgery per lifetime.

    Diet Changes After Nutritionist

I was very lucky to have a nutritionist who was used to serving a diverse populations of people with very different nutritional preferences and cultural diets. (Kosher, Halal, Vegan, Vegetarian, Etc.) She asked me what my favorite diet was....I said Mayo Clinic/Mediterranean....and we looked at some key factors of the diet and made a few adjustments to prepare for bariatric surgery, but mostly I was able to stick to my preferred plan....and even praised for it. (I do hit a higher protein goal than I was used to, but I do half of it in plant protein) I also reduced my carb side dishes to 1/4 cup instead of 1/2 cup. If it's a Vegan main dish, that's different....but a side of rice or potatoes with a protien is a much smaller portion now....and often omitted. I'm discouraged when I hear about dietitians who only offer one approach and doctors who believe Keto is the only way to go. It works very well...but it doesn't work for everyone. I think patients are more compliant with plans they are comfortable with, and can maintain for a lifetime. Glad to be working with a group that offers more than one way up that mountain! Jersey, I'm a big fan of apples with natural peanut butter, too Had some for a snack tonight. LOL...I understand chicken fatigue! Maybe try to switch things up with fish or turkey? Congrats on your 14 pound loss!
  4. Did you? Do you plan to? Do you wish you had, or hadn't? It was recommended to me and I'm currently watching it now. I don't want to link it in case it upsets some folks but it's called "Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RNY) procedure with Dr. Jon Bruce, FACS, FASMBS" on YouTube, and it's from the channel Bariatric Specialists of North Carolina. I think it's pretty interesting so far. I'm feeling a little emotional but not grossed out or anything. Just making it more real.

    Lightheaded

The symptoms of low blood pressure (hypotension) can include: Dizziness or lightheadedness Fainting (syncope) Blurred vision Nausea Fatigue Lack of concentration Low blood pressure on standing up (orthostatic, or postural, hypotension). This is a sudden drop in blood pressure when you stand up from a sitting position or after lying down. Gravity causes blood to pool in your legs when you stand. Ordinarily, your body compensates by increasing your heart rate and constricting blood vessels, thereby ensuring that enough blood returns to your brain. But in people with orthostatic hypotension, this compensating mechanism fails and blood pressure falls, leading to dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision and even fainting. For individuals that experience this condition after bariatric surgery, there are several potential causes. For example if you were on high blood pressure meds prior to surgery, it may be time to reduce the amount of prescription meds you are taking. Make sure you are meeting your daily fluid and vitamin requirements because dehydration and a mineral imbalance can cause this problem. On my bariatric discharge instructions when I left the hospital, one of the times listed for when to contact your surgeon was if you are experiencing dizziness.
  7. Why shouldn't you be hungry? You're, very literally, starting to starve. I went on a rant about this idea of "head hunger". If you've eaten a nice meal of chicken breast and veggies...but you desperately still WANT a cheeseburger and fries...that's "head hunger." Needing more fuel...and having physiological signs that you need more fuel...is actual real hunger. And YES lots and lots of bariatric patients suffer it when their calorie demands are high (healing) and their intake is dangerously low (first few weeks after surgery). Many people suffer nausea...that eliminates hunger. So, they beleive that no one else feels hunger. But lots of us don't suffer any nausea, and for us hunger can be overwhelming until our diets open up to more realistic amounts of calories. I could have eaten my own leg off a week after surgery...I was THAT hungry. You're not alone:) When more foods opened up to me and my caloric intake got to be about 1000 calories a day, I felt wonderful...no more hunger. Hang in there...it gets better.
  8. https://www.buzzfeed.com/carolynkylstra/mason-jar-salads?utm_term=.iu9MzP7pQO#.fjMqE6XOap Bariatric patients look at these and think....would be nice, but WAY too much bulk there to eat.. And it's true...it's a lot of food for a bariatric patient. But if you're eating six small meals a day, it can be nice to have leftovers handy for the next little meal:) Also...you can make these geared a little more to the bariatric diet. Consider the following layers: Hummus Turkey bacon Tuna salad Tofu Shrimp Chicken breast Black beans Chick peas Lowfat hard cheeses Cottage cheese Fetta cheese Olives Banana peppers Avacado chunks Sweet potato chunks Hard boiled eggs Yogurt Pickles Reduced fat reduced sodium salami (great in greek salad!) Protein Pasta (made of chick peas, lentils, and whole wheat) Think of all of your favorites. Include some fruits. A few raspberries, peach slices, fresh apple chunks, pineapple, blueberries Some nice finely diced veggies like peppers, cukes, tomatoes, mushrooms, brocolli bits, onion, fresh herbs Make homemade dressings with low sugar and fat Oh! and if the idea of carrying glass jars around scares you....consider stopping at Gordon's food service and picking up tall plastic deli containers. You can get 50 containers and lids for under ten bucks. The more variety you're including in your diet....the more diverse your gut microbiota will be. Diverse gut bugs are correlated with better weight loss during diet attempts. Switch it up. Get lots of fiber in addition to meeting your protein goals. Get you some wonderful phytonutrients:) And enjoy flavor!
  9. Congratulations on the weight you lost thus far during pre-op. Generally, I think that dieting will only get you so far. The bariatric surgery will take you the rest of the way. So don't be too concerned that you have stabilized or hit a stall. Just concentrate on maintaining the 42 pound weight loss that you have achieved thus far.
  10. I was losing weight 42 pounds oct-December doing whole 30 Transition to keto . On 1/17, I started the 3 month required Nut diet and since then, I have not lost or gained a pound in 3 weeks. Any tips or meal plans you had while you were on the 3/6 month diet before surgery. The biggest change is the increase of protein and lowering of fat. Nut diet is low carb, low fat, night protein What I eat, nearly the same every day I still have coffee but change to half caf 2 hard boiled eggs 1/2 cup of fruit apple or orange Romaine salad with chicken, blue cheese lite balsamic dressing Carrots Adkins shake 100 calorie nut pack or 1oz of cashews Mashed cauliflower with beef and center cut bacon crumbles with cheese (Either a sf pudding, sf hot cocoa, or yogurt) Sometimes an Adkins bar

    Reactive hypoglycemia

Several people have developed reactive hypoglycemia after bariatric surgery. This can affect individual even if they were not diabetic prior to surgery. I find it confusing that your doctor is treating the condition by prescribing Metformin. Metformin is generally used to treat high blood pressure but reactive hypoglycemia is a low blood sugar condition. Here are some links that describe the condition and how to minimize its affects. https://www.ridgeviewmedical.org/services/bariatric-weight-loss/enewsletter-articles/reactive-hypoglycemia-postgastric-bypass/ https://www.stjoes.ca/patients-visitors/patient-education/f-j/PD 7972 Reactive Hypoglycemia after Bariatric Surgery.pdf We had one individual in our bariatric surgery support groups who had developed this condition. It kind of through him for the first time he fainted, but then when he understood the condition he felt it was very manageable. He could detect when he was about to experience the condition and just took a little food or juice and he was good to go. He didn't need any prescription medicine to treat the condition - just awareness and the proper response.

What was your favorite food before surgery??

Shame there isn't a bariatric buffet for us. You,could be issued a disposable teeny, tiny spoon, small plate with curved sides, a tablespoon, and a 1/4 cup measure. I'd call it Babe's Bariteria. Babes cause sometimes in the journey we feel like sitting down and crying. Bariteria well why not for what it is. We could even have protein clears and shakes in a big bowl,of ice for the early inductees and,pre surgs. What do all you think? Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

    Calling March Sleevers

I cannot drop coffee! I did drop wine/alcohol but I'm on my way to get coffee now. I just can't give that up right now. I am ordering my bariatric vitamins this week, along with something to keep my hair from falling out. I drink water all day every day....you sound really focused. Happy for you. I am hoping to get OFF of the CPAP, i hate that thing and I've been on it for over 5 years. Pleased to meet you!

    Got Bad News

Simple. Why don't you get off of a Forum where people are roll players and go to FB and find here there. She documents absolutely every thing that is happening to her. Disecting an individual who is no longer here is hard hitting? Yes. This is the appropriate thing to do on a weight loss forum. This is getting boring. I have to go on a liquid diet shortly. Talk amongst yourselves disecting this person. I came to this forum to get help. Obviously it isn't the place. It's more a bully board. There are other places. Have a good time here. Bariatric Pal also lost a customer. There are other sites. I will not associate with a site nor a store that propogates hate. Have a good life everybody.

No ... it would be an unconscionable thing to say. When I responded I responded to the O.P.'s very first post. I stated I wasn't there in the meeting with the surgeon (and that I knew nothing of PeachesCat's psyche or history) and needed to know what constituted a nasty remark/comment IHHO. [n.b. some people react very strongly to doctors and practitioners telling them hard rules or procedures.] - - - If, in fact, PeachesCat's surgeon used that term, he deserves censure. I do hope she referred it to the clinic business manager (or the practice manager) verbally and in writing. If those are the words the surgeon actually used, it does not show empathy considering that the overwhelming majority of bariatric surgeons are well aware of the sensitivities and prejudices that obese people experience. - - - Here, in Australia, if one feels one's doctor/surgeon/practitioner is rude or brusque or demeaning, there is a form of redress and a way to complain via the Health Complaints Commission and the surgeon's professional association. I presume similar procedures are in place in the USA. No? PeachesCat should be drafting her complaint ASAP.
  16. The insurance coordinator at my bariatric surgeon’s office had a list of phycologists they use for the evals. She did give me a sample letter to give my own therapist but I see an MFT, not an MD or PhD so I just went and did the session with one of the ones the bariatric people suggested. I did get extra letters from my therapist and OB supporting the surgery that I submitted to insurance as well. I was approved first time around. Don’t know if the extra letters helped or not but figured they couldn’t hurt! Sleeved 8/7/17 HW: 256 SW: 248 CW: 197 on 1/3/18 5'7" GW: 150

    Cigna Question

Thanks for replying to my question Texas Mommy, I have started my new job and I have reviewed the insurance policies in full and none of them cover bariatric surgery in any capacity so it seems I will be going the self pay route but thank you so much for giving me some insight.
  18. I was sleeved on 1/3. I am 5’7, was 255 at surgery and I’m down to 226 in 4 weeks. I had a rough 2 week recovery, but feeling fine now. I had a slew of health problems for the last 8 years after gaining 90lbs very quickly. I am happy to say ALL traces of the edema I had are completely gone, I’m off lasix and all my blood pressure meds. I don’t have reflux anymore either. I have 4 more weeks on the mushies stage until I can eat regularly, but I don’t feel restricted on my food choices right now anyway except for anything seeded and raw veggies. I am only able to eat 2oz at a time, but I supplement with two protein shakes a day. I have a few expensive bags of bariatric advantage left that I can’t stand anymore, but I really like the muscle milk with the 32g of protein in it. I tried Isopure drinks 🤢. Still on the hunt for a protein source I can add to my water that isn’t whey and has a milky taste. I have the flu, so I haven’t been exercising but still able to drink and eat “normally” I had a craving for something sweet, and i found a bunch of keto recipes on Pinterest that were sugar free and low carb obviously, my favorite are no bake energy balls made with almond flour and peanut butter. Crystal light is my drink of choice. No alcohol yet, no desire which is weird because I used to drink often. Not in large quantities but often.

    Pre Op Diet Nightmare

While I admit I haven't had it yet, don't sweat the psych exam. Here's an excerpt from the site I linked at the bottom. Unless you're concerned that one of the bullet items applies to you, it should not be a problem. If one of those does apply to you, you likely have bigger problems than your weight. https://www.gastricsurgeon.com/articles/the-psychological-evaluation-for-bariatric-surgery

    Pregnant 6 months after sleeve

I just met with my surgeon for my preop consult. I asked about pregnancy after surgery and he said to take a prenatal on top of my Bariatric multi. that way you still get all you need and the baby still gets what he/she needs. To quote him “the bariatric multi is for you, the prenatal is for the baby”

    Got Bad News

This thread is very strange and oddly entertaining. It seems very strange that a bariatric surgeon would call a patient a fat pig when they deal with obese people every single day. That is very uncalled for and its crazy that he still has patients with that attitude. I hope you reported him. It definitely sounds like a good reason to find a new surgeon. As for gaining weight pre-op... that is really tough and I'm sorry you weren't able to stick to your plan. Its tough stuff for sure. I know its easy to feel defensive about something so upsetting but CreekImp is really not trying to insult you... it just is what it is. We all had to do it, some people had to be rescheduled and try again. Some aced it and continued on and some people had to cancel. But we were all instructed to do it. It is not even entirely because of post-surgery habits. From what I was told it also affects how fatty your liver is during surgery. If it is too fatty it puts you at much higher risk. These rules aren't put in place to make your life harder.. they're put in place to ensure that you continue to have one. I hope that you're able to identify and resolve the problem. Good luck! Edit to add: Also, I wanted to point out that no one doubts anyone's need of WLS. We do not determine if a surgery is elective. People need elective surgeries all the time. Should it be elective? That can be debated.. but it doesn't change the facts. Saying it is elective isn't to belittle anyone's story. It is just a fact.

  25. With my group....when we left the hospital, we were given a wristband we were told to wear for at least a month with a phone number on it for emergency services. (in case we were in an accident or something, the ER could be alerted that we had special needs being new WLS patients and be able to contact our surgeon) We were advised we could call that number 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. And that we should always call them first and make any emergency services aware of their number. It is a tremendous sense of security to have that number. As it happens, I've never had to use it....but just knowing someone from my group will answer the phone and get me help if I need it...has really helped take the anxiety out of recovery. Does everyone get a number like this? What are you told to do about questions, emergencies? Just curious what everyone else's experience was. Also...if you're shopping for a bariatric surgeon....asking about a number like this and what kind of support they provide after surgery is a terrific idea.
