  1. I’m like what the hell just happen - on the day of my surgery The weight was 330 and now 289 which is not bad - I am 6’2 and my healthy weight is about 200 putting me at 130 pounds of excess weight and I’ve lost 41 pounds post op which is about 31% from that excess weight. But for the past week now matter what I do I think I hit a plateau 😤😤😤😤😤 stuck a 289. Is frustrating at the least but I know is a long love journey. I keep my food diary and basically I am doing keto. Better get back to the drawing board and speak to my nutrition team. Anyone else has experience this post op in the initial stages????
  2. So, after the first month and after the first plateau, how much did your weight loss slow down? at what rate were you losing? like around month 2-3 i'm starting to worry that i'm losing too fast

    Pre-Op almost done!

I lost about 4 kg on my pre-op diet, but I started the pre-op diet at 166.4 kg which is significantly more than you. There was no concern about my liver, my surgeon didn't even mention it post-op. And weight started just dropping off as soon as I got rid of the surgical fluid and gas. DO NOT FREAK OUT if you gain weight right after surgery. They pump you absolutely chock full of surgical fluid and gas and it can take a week to pee and belch it all away. Make sure you have a couple of follow-ups with your psychiatrist (or whoever prescribes your bipolar meds), one 2-3 weeks post-op and one about 6 weeks post-op. You may need to have your medication levels changed a bit, and if you have extended-release meds (such as carbamazepine ERC) you will probably need to have those changed to regular release, since it won't sit in your new stomach long enough to be absorbed all day. It's annoying to have to dial in meds again but it's worth it. All you need at the hospital is your phone, a LONG charging cable (some of those outlets might as well be in another room for how far they are from the bed), lip moisturizer, Biotene or similar mouth moisturizer, a comfy and loose set of clothes to go home in, and a pillow for the car ride home in case the seatbelt presses on your incisions (mine didn't, but just in case). You can leave the pillow in the car, obviously. Good luck!

Hello Eggy, I live between Leeds and Manchester and was told that due to covid all NHS Bariatric surgery is off the table. They are concentrating on other surgeries ... I have no doctor at my local health centre that I feel I can speak too and when I tried in the past I just got told to diet again My journey started early this year, I was shocked to realised I had caused my own misery. I was at high risk for covid because of my weight. I thought it was because of my other conditions. I spent all those months indoors and really frightened, because of myself. In that time I managed to get back to my highest weight ever. Then I became diabetic, my last straw. I admit I had to hitch up my big girl pants and be brave. I looked at local private hospitals near me and sent some online inquiries asking the costs. It is no good thinking about it if I can not afford it. It has taken 9 long months since then to get to where I am, pre op tests being ok, 4 days from surgery. Ask away, I will try and help anyway I can

    Hair Loss

We all react differently but for most it does tend to start around month 3. Just a thought but did you have a long pre surgical diet (months not weeks)? If you did maybe your protein levels have been low for a while already unless you were vigilant about your intake. If you also lost a considerable amount of weight during the pre surgical diet your body might have gone into shock earlier too & the surgery was the last straw so to speak. These things are what stimulate & accelerate our natural hair loss cycle & suddenly we’re losing handfuls of hair. Give your surgeon a call & see what they suggest why it’s happening earlier.

    Pre-Op almost done!

A kilogram and a half per week is a lot of loss. I would have maybe lost about that much myself in my pre-op - maybe even a little less. You also weigh less than I did at my surgery weight. Relax. You'll be fine. If you stuck to your diet, your liver will have shrunk. Best advice pre AND post-op is don't obsess over the scales and don't compare your weight loss rate to others. We're all different. Hospital packing - comfy clothes to leave hospital in, toothbrush and paste, face and hands moisturisers (hospital air just sucks moisture out), phone charger. I took my Kobo e-reader but couldn't concentrate with all the painkillers etc.
  9. Hi everyone! Monday is my surgery date and the last two weeks almost ive been super strict on my pre-op diet but ive only lost 3.3kg Start weight was 103.6kg and im 100.3kg this morning. Ive heard of people losing so much more in their pre-op and this small loss really makes me anxious that my liver hasnt shrunk enough😱 i have been told that my bipolar medication can make the weight loss slower though but omg this still makes me anxious! Only a few weeks ago my GP said i have moderate fatty liver disease(after ultrasound) and the surgeon decided a 2 week pre-op will be fine. But im still so anxious that my liver will be too large and they will need to cancel the surgery. What was your loss in pre-op? Guess i just need to feel some sort of reassurance Also, packing for hospital! Anything youd recommend as essential to take?
  10. WLS is a tool, you have to work with it. I wish WLS was magic and work on it's own but it isn't. I have to work with it. I have to log everything, food, vitamins/minerals, exercise. I have to change up macros all the time, or as TheRealPennyD said intermittent fasting and other change ups to keep losing weight. Do you log what you eat, exercise... Etc.?

Am I done losing after 5 months?

Have you guys tried to shake things up during your stall? Not your diet/calories but other things like doing different exercises (if you walk 3x a week start biking or doing stairs), or trying intermittent fasting. If it were me I would focus on protein goals and start doing body weight (strength) exercises

I agree. If your body isn't getting enough nutrients it literally hold on to every calorie. Take a look at this article. https://www.womenshealthmag.com/weight-loss/a19998301/what-is-starvation-mode/
  13. The taste is that you are in ketosis. You are eating low fat and low carb so your body goes into Ketosis and you get that weird taste in your mouth. during Ketosis you burn fat like crazy so keep the carbs low and let it happen. Make sure you are getting your protein and taking your vitamins. It will get better as you get on a normal diet but enjoy the rapid weight loss now.

    Post op day 2

2 week post op appointment My last weight prior surgery was 168. That was my weight at the last appointment prior to surgery which was a week before, so it may have been a little more. I say more because I did not do a pre- op diet…at all. I ate all the things up until the day before surgery. I did a liquid diet for 24 hours the day before surgery. Starting weight: 168 pounds height: 5 foot (imma meatball) Self pay, BMI 33.2 2 week post op: 152.8 pounds down: 15 pounds When I told my surgeon that I haven’t met (or even have come close to) meeting protein goals, and I haven’t drank a single protein shake. He said “don’t worry about the protein, I don’t really want you drinking protein shakes”. UMMM what?!? I mean, weight lifted because I’m not doing it anyways. He was pleased that I’m staying hydrated with just water, and that I am eating 2oz at a time. I told him I having cravings, and he said have one bite and be done with it. He also told me to start eating fruit. Music to my ears. I feel a lot less stressed about it all. He doesn’t seem super strict, which I don’t know if it’s case by case. Being that i started at a low obese BMI, maybe that has something to Do with it. He also said my hunger is likely to decrease over the next few weeks. Enough appointment talk. Back to what’s going on with me post op day 15. I’ve been able to take a mouthful of water and swallow 3-4 times in a row. Still pretty small sips, but I’m no longer using a med cup (haven’t for while) or waiting minutes between. I am having a hard time slowing down with my meals too. I’m definitely not taking 20 minutes. I find my found myself eating 3 small bites rather quickly, then taking it slower after that. My vitamins have become a 10 minute ordeal of me almost throwing up. Like my mouth will water like I’m about to puke. I just try really hard not to. My energy level is pretty good. Considering no caffeine and little protein. For breakfast I had 1.5oz canned chicken and 0.5 oz banana) For lunch I had canned Annie’s vegan chili (1oz) and 1oz smashed potatoes, pinch of shredded cheese. It was yum! feeling good!
  16. Oh that wasn’t my first drinking with a post-wls bod. im 3 years out now and drink quite regularly (bring on the concerned comments, I’m ready!) my fIrst attempt at alcohol was 3-4 weeks post. I had maybe two sips of red wine and it slightly burned a little and I swear I could feel it travel down my intestines. With so little drank, it had no effect on me. second attempt was closer to 2 months post had a few sips of a sugary soju drink and I had a several hour long dumping episode. Not pretty. I probably had 5 or so PARTIAL drinks my ENTIRE weight loss phase. It got me tipsy quickly even with small amounts of less than 1/3 a drink, and I could tell I wouldn’t be able to drive….but I also sobered up really quickly. fast forward to now and i can drink maybe 2 drinks in succession (like in under an hour) and be pretty toasted…if I nurse the drinks over a period of time I can keep from getting too drunk. And I still sober up really quick. oh and I mostly stay away from sugary mixers if I can help it…

    Contrave After Sleeve

I was always hungry since the day I got out of surgery. I had been on metformin for weight loss (I don't have diabetes) and it made me less hungry, so after I couldn't stand being hungry all the time, they put me back on it, and it has really helped a lot. Some people get nausea or diarrhea from it. I also would talk to your nutritionist about how much you SHOULD be eating. It could be that you're eating too little and actually need to increase your calories. I haven't tried contrave but make sure your insurance will cover it because it's going to be very expensive most likely.

Your husband seems really supportive; that's great! The weight calculator is at the top where your user name is, there should be a down arrow. Hit that, then go to "my surgery" then go to "progress" and you can change the weight there. You can also add "tickers" like I have below. Good Luck!
  19. I'm early in the process and trying to lose weight prior to surgery as my surgeon has asked me to do. I know I'm among friends here who know exactly how a mind like mine works. So I'd love to hear whatever tips you have that have worked for you, even temporarily, for this simple question... How do I stop obsessing about food? Even when I'm eating well, way too much of my time is spent wondering when I'll be able to eat again and thinking about that next meal. Right now I'm at work, focused on work, watching a show, and still, my mind every couple of minutes drifts off to my desire to eat. If anyone has any advice for this specific difficulty, I'd appreciate it. Because if I keep thinking about it, eventually, I'm probably going to give in.

Thanks! It is a struggle. Night time is harder cause my husband is home and he has to cook and eat. He told me I don't have to worry about cooking for him at this time so I don't get tempted! He is a great support. I have a different question how do I get that weight calculator on everyone's page?
  21. Couldn’t agree more with all the advice above. The goal is a future healthy life style. The first weeks weight loss is not a predictor of that. It’s hard in the first month or so to see the light, but if you work the process you’re going to succeed. We all seem to use the scale to measure success so I get it. I did the same thing and did experience the three week post op stall. I too was frustrated and concerned, but I held steady, it passed and I continued to see success. I’m three months out and have surpassed my original expectations.

Once you get the surgery, you may find that you are not interested in eating a lot of different foods. Your restriction is going to limit you anyway, so for me, I just ended up not really bothered by the smell of cooking. Once you start losing the weight and get the desire to keep it going, you will be even more uninterested in those things. Things that I could not walk by without grabbing a piece have no power over me any longer.
  23. I am 6 months post op from sleeve surgery. I've lost 73 pounds from my highest weight, but only 58 pounds since surgery. I'm eating 800-1000 calories a day, getting my protein and liquids, taking all my vitamins and exercising 5 or 6 days a week. The weight loss has stalled over the last 2 months, and I am so frustrated. I feel great physically, but am discouraged and disappointed. My primary care doctor spoke to me yesterday about trying Contrave. Have any of you tried it after surgery? What was your experience?

Pants Size and Other Bariatric Sites

I really hadn’t thought about this until I saw your post. I have been just going thru my closet an finding old clothes to wear. I decided to check sizes last night to my surprise I have dropped from a 34 to 28!! I have lost 102 lbs so far but I have only really seen the difference in my neck and of course being a woman lost my Boobs!! I agree that we all carry weight differently an will lose in different areas. It also depends on your exercise areas I think as well.

Good Morning folks, Been lurking here for a while and by all means tell me if I'm in the wrong place but my brief story, I'm right at the beginning of my journey trying to pluck up the courage to speak to my doctor about weight loss surgery. I'm 28 years old, I'm over 35 stone and my BMI is over 80. I am so scared of the whole speaking to the doctor process and the NHS process. Would anyone be happy to share their experience of how to approach the doctor, I honestly feel like I've exhausted every other option and now I've gotten to the point where if surgery goes wrong then so be it, at least I'm not slowly dying for years to come. Sorry if that seems harsh but I feel like I've gotten to this place. Thanks again in advance for reading.
