Getting Completely Filled The First Year
Rojasanoll replied to cheryl2586's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have had only 2 fills and I have a total 4.5cc in a 14cc band. But the doctor is starting to hesitate in any more fills because he only wants me too lose no morfe than 2 pounds a week. This will allow me to eat wise and properly over a longer period of train. To retrain my brain and change my eating habits. I don't know if I'm close to a green zone or not, but he likes my weight loss so far. Guess I'm doing something right. -
Transitioning to Solid Food
saffy255 replied to PalmTrees's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
LOL... I was ravenous the day after my op and so dumped the Soup I'd been told to eat for the 1st week and moved onto mushies.... 9 days post op I'm still on mushies and will prob stay on them another week... then I'll move onto mashed food - rather than pureed for a week - then soft solid food. Although I get full quickly now, I had no probs with PB's or gas or anything else... like markymark, I forget I have the band sometimes!! -
It's too early for the scale!! Give yourself time to recuperate. I didn't lose anything the first week either.

Hello everyone, My name is Bariatric852. I am a 28 year old female who has just undergone laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery earlier this month. I am coming up to three weeks post op on a full liquid diet. I am craving solid food so much - I miss chewing my food. I am actually looking forward to puréed food stage starting on the 27th of May. The various weight loss surgeries were initially brought up by a specialist in a sleep clinic dealing with my sleep apnea. This was nearly three years ago. During these years leading up to my surgery, I have seen a multitude of doctors and specialists. Psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, surgeons, dietitian, physiotherapist. A lot of professionals to see. I have quite a few health problems such as Clinical Depression, PCOS, Sleep Apnea, high blood pressure and Borderline Diabetes... The doctors gave careful consideration to all of the above and gave me the green light to go ahead with the surgery this year. I was given the choice of gastric sleeve or gastric bypass. I chose the bypass. My weight, at it’s heaviest was 155kg or 341.7lbs. In preparation for the surgery I had to lose 5-10% of my body weight. I managed to do this and my weight pre op was 125.5kg or 275.6lbs. Three weeks later and my current weight is 120.6kg or 265.9lbs. My family say I look a little thinner especial around my face. I know I have a long journey ahead of me. Life-long dietary supplements and antidepressants (21 pills a day). And a lot of hard work to be put in. But I look forward to seeing my weight drop and my body and mind becoming healthier.

Transitioning to Solid Food
laura395 replied to PalmTrees's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was on solid foods by the 3rd week. Started with fish, then did dark chicken, ground beef and ground turkey. Then dark meat turkey and white meat chicken. -
I was on my pre-op diet for two weeks which consisted of unlimited sugar free popsicles and Jello, broth, and one 8 oz. glass of skim milk, a low carb/cal. yogurt and 60 grams of Protein shakes. My one week post-op diet was the same minus the milk and yogurt. Today is the day I'm suppose to be able to eat cottage cheese, string cheese, tuna.etc.... for one meal, then go back to drinking Water and Protein Shakes for the rest of the day. Well..... I don't have any HUNGER!!!!! Nothing sounds good to me and the smell of food kinda makes me nauseous. I don't want to eat. I know I should, but? :confused1:ANYONE ELSE FEEL THIS WAY? Deb

Pity, party of one.......
helen098 replied to Alli in StL's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
do you have room for one more at your party? The liquid stage is HELL – all you can do is think about food- I still have to cook for my disabled brother so shopping was HELL. I went to Trader Joes and realized there was nothing in the entire store I could eat and almost ended up crying it felt like a special level in hell for us over eaters It does get better… I am now three weeks and one day post op and eating real food I can’t have the sugar free foods (due to the colon cancer) so I am in the same boat…kind of jealous of the people who can eat Jello and pudding I did eat every night after my dinner shake a regular Italian ice ..it is 100 calories and i would let it melt in my mouth before swallowing Someone said to use this time to kind of train for the band restrictions Practice drinking and eventually eating slowly I am assuming you did this for the same reason I did , it was our only hope I know it will get better hang in there -
Had Surgery 4/19 And Everything Is Great So Far!
tmorgan813 replied to randalljohn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had mine on 4-12. It hasn't even been two weeks yet. I remember in the hospital not even being able to suck on ice as it would make me want to throw up. My how time has made things better. LOL -
Surgery was yesterday! Liquids question
Med1862 replied to sageandcoyesmommy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just returned home from the hospital thus afternoon, my surgery was on the 11th also. My first day post op after I passed my swallow study they wanted me to get in 300-500ml of liquids in, that was a struggle. Now for the next 3 weeks its 48 oz a day. My surgeons told me the best way to know if your getting in enough fluids us by your output. You should be peeing 4 times a day, any less then your not getting enough. I thought that was good advice. Pretty sore but glad to be home. -
I feel like a whiner...
Rogofulm replied to todonovan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congratulations! You have reached The Dreaded Week-3 Stall. It's perfectly normal, and just about all of us have suffered through it. You're not crazy, and your doctor didn't screw up. In fact, you might not lose any weight for two weeks or more. But don't worry -- after that, the weight will start falling off if you stick to your program. If you're interested, here's a good article that explains why it happens and why we all have to go through it. Hang in there. Pretty soon it'll be in the rear-view mirror and you'll be dropping weight again like crazy! (Apologies to BP regulars who have seen this repeatedly, but it's a big deal to those who are going through it!) -

Feeling Like My Weight Is Slow.....what Do You Think?
Erin posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am 11 weeks post-op and just reached 40 pounds lost since my date of surgery weight. 60 pounds if you include pre-op diet. It seems like alot of videos and blogs say that at this time they have lost a good 20+ pounds more than me. Maybe I'm not doing all I could be? I do everything my surgeon has said. I'm just so afraid I'm not going to reach my goal weight in time. Im kinda wishing I should have had the duodenal switch.....they say it has greater weight loss outcomes, but there was no surgeon that performed that surgery here. Anyone else feel like its moving slow? And have you found any tips on maximizing weight loss. I have 100 pounds to go to not be " overweight". Any tips? -
Yes only a week out and feel like other than residual surgical pain and the money it cost me the surgery did nothing. I'm hungry. Not head hunger. I don't like sweets. I hate milk products. No more protein shakes please. I want a nice salad. I was losing weight really well, now nothing. My rationale for the surgery was historically gaining it back. Now I just want a greek salad with fat free dressing and to return to losing 5 pounds a week.

I am a week and a half post op and I feel like my mouth is so dry! Its driving m e crazy...Protein drinks dry me out...juice drys me out...so I've been drinking water but it only lasts for a couple mins. Is there anything I can do for this? Is this normal after surgery?

I don't know if it's the holidays or what but I'm getting no where fast. I have gained 3 pounds in the past 2 weeks, have plenty of things I cant tolerate but the things I can I feel like I can eat endlessly. I know I'm making crappy food choices and not really exersicing now that the cold weather is here. I just feel like I cant get out of my own way. What do you do to kick yourself in the butt and get it together?

Only Able To Eat About 2Oz's At A Sitting, Need Advice.
slimthickens posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have noticed that the max I can eat per meal is around 2 oz of mushies. This raises a question for me. If I am only supposed to eat 3 meals and 3 snacks at a sitting yet I can only consume 2oz's or sometimes less of mushies then how will I get in enough calories to avoid going into starvation mode? Also I'm only supposed to eat for 30 minutes and then stop but it is taking me an average time of 1 hour and 5 minutes to get those 2oz's down comfortably. Any advice on how I can work this out? I'm never hungry but I don't want to rob my body of the calories it needs to function properly and if I try to eat faster I risk pain and discomfort so I'm a little puzzled by these rules. I am averaging about 500 calories a day and am 3 weeks post op. -

How Many weeks out are you? I would even try taking one bite and wait about 5 min. My first "soft" foods was nearly the first time I vomited and ate less than 3 oz. good luck!!!

Strategies for surviving Thanksgiving??
lsereno replied to Becca's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm in the same boat as you Becca. I'm 6 months out and I can eat more. I have yet to stay the same or gain since I've had the surgery, and I really hope to not break that trend on Thanksgiving week. We are having Thanksgiving at my sister-in-laws, but my husband and I are cooking most of the dishes. I am making everything I usually make, but I will not be bringing chips and dip as I usually do. I am not going to eat everything from dinner. For example, I won't be wasting room on dinner rolls or mashed potatoes. For Breakfast, I will have my usually yogurt and a Soy Latte. At lunch I will eat the turkey liver and 1/4 cup of macaroni salad that I am making for dinner. Dinner is early in our family, around 3 p.m. I will have turkey with a bit of gravy, cranberry sauce, and a bite of stuffing. Later in the evening I will have a bite of pumpkin pie and maybe a piece of sees candy. I will be working out Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday Thanksgiving week. The next day for lunch and dinner, I will have turkey and a little something else, but not as much as on Thanksgiving. My goal is to eat Protein first, limit the bad foods to 1/4 cup or less of only my favorites, and to NOT GRAZE. If I limit the number of times I eat during the day, I will automagically have more portion control. Additional goals are to limit the indulgence to Thanksgiving and the day after and to work out as many days as I can that week. I'm looking forward to a fun family holiday. I'm toying with the idea of adding a new craft for the day: Maybe a little branch and a bunch of paper leaves. People write what they are grateful for on the leaves and then tape them to the tree. My family may find this too hokey. Other possibility is some little Christmas craft I can do with my nieces. They are in their late teens now, but sometimes still like to make a craft. Lynda -
2 months Out&Standing Still
christieouchley replied to TiASleeves's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is very good advice. Before my surgery I was so grateful to be starting a new way of life and to be free of the scale, and worry. I was stalled for 3-4 weeks and worried the whole time. The scale is moving again and I lost 3 lbs in the last 4 days. Yes overall I would have expected to loose more by now, but I am so much happier 31 lbs down in 7 weeks. Im doing so much more with my kids and my life and I would do it all over again. -
I'm also about 2 weeks out, and I know what you mean about the walking. I've been walking long walks every morning and I feel better and better every day.

Ok so tomorrow I start my 2 week diet. It's not completely liquid as I get a bar a day but still won't be easy. The thing is that for the past six months I had been talking about how the day before I would go all out on food and have a wonderful steak dinner. Well I've been sick for the last three days and have had no appetite. Today I had oatmeal for fb and a lunchables for lunch. I'm not craving ANYTHING. The only reason I feel I should eat is bc this is it for a while you know. Although with time I will be able to enjoy those foods again, it just feels like I need to gobble it all down. But not tonight, tonight I'm having baby carrots and grilled chicken for dinner. And it's only because I need my Protein after the kick ass workout I did. If I did go out I would probably be forcing myself to eat. Let's hope I feel the same the next three days as I heard they are the hardest lol Ok blabbing over -
Hi, I am having surgery in 8 days but I am sure I can answer a few of your questions... I have not read of anyone dying because of the surgery, I have heard of a few people dying from underlying illnesses, mostly heart problems that were not caught in time. Before the surgery they put you on an adtkins like diet- 2 - 3 weeks before. Now I have heard that some have had no pre- surgery diet. But this is to help shrink the stuff around the liver and make it easier to work around. Right after it will be Clear liquids for up to 2 week so your stomach can heal. You will slowly work you way up to solid food. About a month to 6 weeks later you will most likely be able to eat solid food. You will get full a lot faster, and you can overeat, but then you will just end up throwing up or PBing. You can do serious damage if you do not listen to you stomach when you are full. After about 6 weeks of no weight loss and more critera of no loss of weight you will go in for a "fill" in which the band will be filled with saline to make you have restriction. This might take a few fills to hit what they call the "sweet spot" this is when you can eat very small portions and still lose weight. The band is permant unless there is complications or you wish to remove it. It took me 3 months to complete all of my appointments, sum 30 appointments total..It was stressful, but at the end well worth it. There are so many people on this board and you will get a wide variety of stories and opinions, so here is mine. Also here are the differences (in my opinion) of what the procedures are and why I chose the one I did! I have done some extensive weighing of the options, I found out that once you do the gastric bypass, you can not do anything else. The gastric bypass is a "quick fix" which is you lose the weight quickly. But once your body recovers and 3 or 4 yrs down the road if you have not changed your eating habits you will gain a lot of the weight back. I have read some recent articles in people magazine of people gaining all the weight back plus more 3 to 4 yrs later and they can not have banding or any other surgery. I have heard so many sad stories of complications and deaths that it scared the crap out of me. With the band it is a continuous life time changing procedure. It is reversable, and yet while you are learning to eat right 3 to 4 yrs down the road if you find yourself gaining, you can go in for a fill to get yourself back on track. Yes the weight loss is gradual, but it helps your body adjust as you learn better eating habits. I have heard about complications, but most are relatively minor and can be quickly corrected. I have heard of no deaths that are directly from the surgery. And only 2 that were because of underlying illnesses that were not caught before the procedure. And this is why I chose the procedure... Good luck in what ever decision you make... Baileym Hope this helps! Baileym ____________ June 14th
