    Hows is everyone?

I was banded Dec 16th and have lost 48lbs since before surgery, 38lbs since surgery. Since my 2nd fill I have hit the crap stage I am calling it! I am hungry again I have only lost 2 lbs in 3 weeks and I am waiting for my 3rd fill next week. I was not really expecting such an emotional roller coaster afterwards. I am happy about the weight I have lost but I feel like it sucks that it has slowed. I went jeans shopping and I have gone from a 22 to an 18 so thats something to be happy about but it still hard cause I just want to walk in and whatever I want to fit fit again. Ha ha. The expectations we as women have. Oh well I am done venting for now I hope everyone else is doing good!
  3. Hi Kate33! I can't really answer your questions, BUT I currently have a Lap-Band (that I hate), I got it in Mexico (which I loved!) and I am 26 years old! I haven't run into too many "younger" people yet, so it's nice to see you here! I have some of the same questions as you. I have a date, and a surgeon, but I am still apprehensive! I am scheduled for August 11, in TJ with Dr. Almanza. I had my first surgery in TJ with Dr. Rodriguez and had a great experience. I have thrown up so much that I need an endoscopy this Thursday to look at scar tissue in my esophagus... I was banded in August of 2010. I have found a place here in Seattle who will do patients from Mexico. My American doctor told me that in this economy it would be stupid for weight loss surgeons not to see patients with procedures done in Mexico. (Many were trained by the Mexican doctors!) He said it is just losing them business to turn away potential patients because they were banded or sleeved in Mexico. He said initially he thought it would change patients' minds about going down to Mexico, but it hasn't deterred it--and it's much cheaper. Anyway! Nice to find you on here, if you'd like to talk more or exchange stories, here's my email: erikaj@aol.com <3 Erika
  4. I've only had my sleeve two weeks but it really is a whole new world. I've gone 3 weeks without throwing up, which is a record with the band. Even though I'm only on full liquids I could have issues iwth the band when it came to eating something like yogurt. I can have breakfast in the morning without have to down 24 oz of water first to make sure food could even go down. I just feel like this is what weight loss surgery was supposed to be all along. I had my band 3 years but I was miserable with it. Fills, unfills, re-fills, re-unfills...neverending vicious cycle. I will never recommend the band to anyone. Sleeve ALL THE WAY!
  5. Great! I was very anemic pre-op. My hemoglobin was only 8.9 (no wonder I was exhausted all the time!) and my ferritin was low indicating iron-deficiency anemia. I was worrying that I wouldn't get it high enough to have surgery by my scheduled date but I did it! Just squeaked by at 10.6. I saw my hematologist just last week and I thought for sure I would be anemic because there are days I forgot my iron supplement but alas I was 11.1..whew! Good luck and I hope you get the answer to why you're a bit pale.

Did you get cold feet before surgery?

If you are a foodie, like you actually have good taste in food not just eating lots of crap, you are going to LOVE foodie life post op. Most of the time for myself I have the same simple things all the time. So when I go out, it is a real treat, especially since it is fairly rare I go to a real restaurant now, compared to the past ( I used to eat out a lot, now just a couple times a week maybe). After going through the food stages and adjusting your relationship with food. You learn to love food as fuel. Then when you do eat delicious things out, you can totally be satisfied with a taste. Food to me tastes far better now than it ever did before because since I know I can only have a "little" (and that isn't really true anymore, depending on what it is, I can have a almost normal portions of things that are not dense protein), and what I have has to be good. I won't waste room or calories on bad food. I went somewhere last week, had half a bite of food, decided it was rubbish and walked out (I had already paid my tab before the food came). At least that is my experience. I can have a little bit of everything and just enjoy the taste and the flavors and not try to eat to be full. So all the fancy restaurants that I used to feel starved after I ate there, are completely satisfying now. It is really hard to explain to someone that hasn't experienced it but some of the other vets that used to post here have expressed the same kinds of feelings. I went from first visit to surgery in 8 weeks. No time to get cold feet, plus my BFF bought a plane ticket to be with me and spent her own money so I couldn't back it. I purposely did it all very fast so I wouldn't have the option of talking myself out of it. No regrets about surgery not one second.

    Feeling hungry....

Congrats on your weight loss! I am only 3 months post op, so I cannot comment directly on your experience, however, I’ve always been a big snacker so I thought I’d share the information my dietician discussed with me. She told me some people have an easier time eating 5-6 small “meals” throughout the day versus 3 regular meals. She told me it’s okay if I eat a snack or two - as long as it is protein focused or a vegetable. So things like cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, cheese sticks, etc are good snack options. The other thing I’m curious about is if you are counting your calories or logging your intake in some way? That has always helped me to see what I’ve eaten and make sure I stay within my calorie limit. Anyway, I hope you can get some answers. Keep us posted ☺️

    Mushy foods stage

@@computercat Egg can be very harsh. I am 28 months post op and still they feel like bricks in my stomach. I get sick every single time I try them by themselves. I can eat a tiny and I do mean tiny amount of a hard boiled egg if it is in a salad. I can pretty much eat everything else but I have found it very common for people to have trouble with eggs. I have also learned that you need to keep trying every couple of weeks or months. I last tried them about 6 weeks ago and I just cannot handle them so I am giving up on eggs.

    OK no judging please

I made it 2 days short of my 4 weeks before I ate anything not pureed (with my doctors permission). It was St Patrick's day (and my husband's birthday) and I had corned beef and carrots. I could only eat 2 oz of meat and one baby carrot, but it was divine!!! You can do it! It isn't worth the risk of blowing out your stitches, eating before you are cleared by your doctor, and carbonated beverages will fill you sleeve up with gas, and that would be so painful. I am rooting for you!

    Port pain- is this normal?

yep... absolutely normal. the port area can hurt 2-3 months after surgery. it WILL get better though!

Hard time eating on the pureed stage

this sounds exactly like me when I ate too fast, or a texture I wasn't ready for yet. I would get a terrible chest pain that took a moment then passed. never nauseous or regurgitated anything, it just HURT right in the centre of my chest. here are my suggestions to you: 1. buy yourself a smaller set of silverware and a small plate to help you adjust to eating small bites. I've heard the size of your pinky finger tip. sometimes you just have to trick your brain with an optical illusion to help you relearn what size bites are really right for your stomach. 2. use a timer to time your chewing. Baritastic is an app that has a "chew chew chew" timer built right into it. use the timer and make sure you are chewing that entire time, even if the sensation starts to be kinda gross. you will eventually be able to chew a BIT more normally, but for now you really need to destroy everything that goes into your mouth. 3. PUT YOUR FORK DOWN between bites. do not chew, swallow, put more in the your mouth, because you'll think you're taking your time but you may be eating wayyyyy faster than you perceive yourself to be. (this is especially true of moms or teachers or nurses or anyone who has had a lifetime of needing to eat fast and get onto the next thing ASAP... those habits die hard lol!) take a bite, put your fork down, chew, swallow, sit and breathe... then take another bite. If you are chewing slowly and small bites and still getting that sensation, take a break from the food that causes that sensation and try something else. the first time i got it was from some mashed potatoes. I stopped eating them, had something else, and didn't try them again for another couple weeks (since they're not that great of a food for you anyway). for something like eggs that fits well into your post-op diet, try them the next day or two days later maybe. you can also try cooking the eggs a different way. some people can't do scrambled eggs but can do poached, etc. tuna, if you haven't yet, try mixing it with some kind of sauce, whether that be light mayo or yogurt or vinaigrette or whatever else you like. I had mine with light miracle whip.

    PRE filled band (during surgery)

I had 2 ccs put in mine during surgery- I am down 32 pounds- have had no issues with eating or gettig stuck. I am not hungry between meals and I honestly don't think I wil get a fill on my 6 week appointment.
  13. My postop for my band revision (also due to a slip) was the same as with my original band. Two days Clear liquids, eight days liquids, two weeks mushies, then gradual introduction of non-mushies. Best wishes to you. Sue

    Therapist?

I do. I've had the same therapist for years now. She specializes in bariatric surgery and eating disorders. That said..im 7.5 months post op and have hit exactly the same spot as you. Suddenly feel so lost. I saw my dietician this week and I was given specific instructions to stop counting numbers. .calories/carbs/fat/protein etc. And just trust when I feel hungry. Harder to do for me than it sounds. She also told me to start going to the clinic led support group, she said I was at the point where a lot of people feel lost. This is why I think it would be great to have some sort of 6-12 month forum for us tweens as gamergirl put it on another thread. There seems to be a great deal of support for pre and fresh post op and the 1+year out vets but not us tweeners. I think thats where a lot of us fall off of here and begin to feel lost and alone.
  15. My post op diet was 1 week liquids, 1 week mushies, then introduce solid foods. This is pretty different from most on these boards. It worked VERY well for me, because after 2 weeks I was very hungry and ready for real food. I have a theory as to why some surgeons say to stay on liquids and then mushies for much longer. In my opinion that is overkill. My theory was bashed on a previous post so I don't publicize it anymore. The more I read, the more I believe my theory is correct!
  16. My Dr was pretty laid back regarding post op diet... I was to slowly add solids back in after 1 week and if tolerated I was able to have a fill at my 2 week post op appt.

    How many calories a day?

I was sleeved 1/13 and am only down 20 lbs. I lost 10 in the first week after surgery and another 10 over the first 3 weeks. I have lost nothing in the last 4 weeks. I am beyond depressed. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I feel like I eat nothing and the scale won't budge

    Waiting on UHC!

So, I hope to hear soon. It has been about a week since I changed my mind from Lapband to Sleeve. I was previously approved for Lapband and already had my surgery date and kept reading about all the problems people had with Lapband and the having to have fills and unfills and hospital trips...etc.... So, I am so hoping that UHC will approve of Sleeve since it already approved my Lapband! AHHHHAHAHAH

    Surgery in Mexico

One of the things that I did not want is this to be about getting a sleeve vs another type of WLS. This is about the risks of any surgery, one of the things that struck me is the comment that they wanted her to spend another 2 or 3 weeks in Mexico and that her complications were due to her refusal. I have seen a lot of people that have been successfully banded in Mexico and had fantastic results, but then I run into articles like this that make me think twice.

The big day is coming up fast!

Oh, Lisa, I know EXACTLY how you feel. I felt that way only one week ago today!! Let's see, what words of wisdom can I impart? Just this: in the very short term the thing to think about is that you're having surgery, and you have to recover from that. That's plenty to keep you busy all by itself. Don't worry about the band, or your reaction to it, or if you're going to lose weight with it (for heaven's sake!). Good luck, girlie. You'll sail through!!!

    How many calories a day?

You are doing fine. One thing I learned is weight loss is 95% food intake. It toook me 5 months to get my energy back. I am now at 10 months 130 lbs down and started training for a 1/2 marathon in April. Last week I ran a 15 K. Give your self time. As my mentor says do most of the stuff , most of the time and you will lose most of the weight. You wont regret this ride.

    How many calories a day?

I was sleeved on Jan 20th and I'm down 30 lbs. On most days I'll use every calorie that MFP has to offer for that day. Occasionally I'll eat about 800 a day but no matter what I get in my Protein, Water and Vitamins. Having said that, I average a weight loss of about 3 pounds a week. My question is... Will we still loose if we eat the allotted MFP calories per day/per weight?

    Is this "bandster hell"??

I wish I was where you two are! You are fine and the weight loss will be slow but your doing great! I however am 6 months out and weigh exactly what I weighed 1 month out:( I have had 3 fills and I have to eat slow, I do get stuck daily if I don't chew slow enough and I can go almost 5 hrs with no hunger and still just plateau. I have increased my Water and my exercise inches lost I do see but that scale isnt changing. Keep up the good job ladies! Your not in Bandster Hell
  25. Really curious about this as I've seen it mentioned on a few of the weight gain forums!! Everytime someone mentions a weight gain someone says watch ur sodium intake! Can someone explain why?? As after weeks do water and protein I love a bit of salt on my scrambled egg :(
