    September Surgery Buddies!!

Late to this group and got operated in September 2021. Starting weight was 330 lbs (152 kg) and the current weight is 264 lbs (120 kg) and down to waist size 44 from 50, which is good. In the middle of a long stall (around 5 weeks where I have not lost weight and gained and lost a few 100 grms). I do have some improvement areas and not a big fan of running or protein shakes, though I try to make some of it up with eggs and chicken but not enough I would guess. waiting for my 6 month post-op blood tests. I still believe I am another 70-80 lbs away from where I would like to be and hopefully the weight loss will start back sooner rather than later, but I am a bit worried with the length of the stall. DO look forward to hearing more positive outcomes to help inspire myself. Cheers

    Am I eating too much?

At 8 weeks I wasn’t eating 1/2 cup. Two scrambled eggs would take three days to eat. But we are different & there are a lot of different plans some which encourage you to eat more than what I did. Hopefully your dietician will get back to you with more specifics around portion size, etc. which will best suit you. You do need to work at eating more slowly & taking small bites. Use smaller cutlery (I used a teaspoon for ages). Put your cutlery down between bites & wait a couple of minutes before taking the next. Distract yourself if needed. Have a conversation with your family between bites. Read a page, wait for an ad break, play a game of solitaire or sudoku online, listen to a song between bites or whatever. I still take ages to eat 30 - 60 minutes is usual depending upon what I’m eating. Remember it takes time for that message you’re full or had enough to get through & often by the time you feel full you’ve eaten more & are actually more than full. All the best.

    5'6" 217lbs getting sleeve surgery

I am 5'6" and weighed in at 214 on the day of my sugery 2 1/2 weeks ago. I, too, was skinnier when I was younger. Over the past 5 years or so, I gained weight and could NOT lose any weight no matter what I tried. After the gastric sleeve 2 1/2 weeks ago, I am already down to 198. This is such a gift! It's not easy, but it's so worth it. I would do it again in a heartbeat. This is changing my life!!!!![emoji173][emoji173][emoji173][emoji173] I know, you too, will love it!!!!!![emoji173][emoji173][emoji173][emoji173] Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    After Surgery

Hey everyone, I have some exciting news, I got approved for gastric bypass this past Monday and, my surgery date is next month on the 22nd. I was just wondering what kinds of exercises that you guys have done and that you've had success in achieving also, I do have PCOS so I was just wondering for my fellow cysters how much weight have you guys lost in 2-12 months and what was your weight loss each month. I was also wondering what types of food did you guys eat after 2 weeks like what could you guys tolerate and, very lastly what can I expect before, during, and after my surgery?
  6. Not shaving my legs for a week? Yikes. I’d be booking in for waxing the week before. 😆. I had to use an anti bacterial wash the night before my surgery too & wash my hair with it. Bit drying on the skin & then couldn't moisturise. Didn’t have to with my gall removal 2yrs later though 🤷🏻‍♀️ Sounds like you’re doing well so far - congrats.

    5'6" 217lbs getting sleeve surgery

I am 5’8” and was 235 when I started my journey. I can’t even remember my weight in high school or college because it was just NEVER A concern of mine until my late twenties when the symptoms of bipolar began. Between depression and the medication for the illness I just gained and gained. Dieting and regaining over and over until I finally got the sleeve. Now at 11 months out I am just above the “normal” range of BMI. I have to accept that on these meds I will never be a size one or even a three again but I am still very happy with my decision to do the sleeve. I have to admit that all I have been doing in terms of exercise is walking so with more exercise I would definitely be a normal BMI by now I’m sure.

    Food Woes

Hello, I had Gastric Bypass on November 23, 2021. I've lost 55 lbs since then and I'm quite proud of that... Is that a normal amount to lose? I've been walking every day and doing yoga when I can... I bought an elliptical but I dont use it as often as I would like.... I keep plateauing. I lost 5 lbs two weeks ago while I was traveling and then now im plateauing again My mom says its because I'm eating English muffin (up to one per day) with cream cheese.... or quesadilla... She says im not getting good enough protein in. I still can't eat many things without vomiting still so I feel I dont have many options. What do you eat? I do also have shrimp sometimes after work or scallops... I can eat out having like kungpao chicken... broth soup... mussels/clams.... but at home I am having a hard time determining good food. 😕 Thank you B

    Am I eating too much?

I’m 8 weeks out. Maybe I am pushing it a bit and should cut back a little. Hopefully my dietitian will give me some guidance if they ever get back to me.
  12. Hi everyone! I'm scheduled for my revision on March 21, 2022. I had my original surgery 21 years ago! My sw prior to the first surgery was 375, in the first year I lost 100lbs getting down to 275... my lowest weight since then was 248 due to an illness. I've bounced up and down between 250 and 280 since then. I am a diabetic, have Gerd and was just diagnosed with very slow motility (my pcp says gastroparesis but my surgeon just says slow motility). When I started the process for revision (7months ago) my surgeon didn't think insurance would cover for just weight loss, but with further testing we discovered the digestion issue, his tune changed and surgery was approved! I know a lot has changed with protocols in the last 21 years! I see my surgeon next week for pre-op so I will be asking him a lot, but wanted to find out from anyone who's had the proximal to distal revision as well: What was the recovery like for the distal revision compared to the original surgery? Did you have to spend anytime in the hospital? My surgeon already mentioned he does it outpatient and I should go home same day, which seems crazy to me! I know weight loss can be slower with a revision. How much did you lose and in what timeframe? Any other pieces of advice? I plan on strictly following the food phases that the nutritionist gave me and leaning toward the longest of the time frames she gave me... ie 2-3 weeks post op liquid, 4-8 weeks soft foods etc... I am determined to lose and get to a goal weight of 155-175 which my surgeon said was possible in our initial meeting 8 months ago.
  13. Hi Im a bit worried I am able to eat too much. I have had very little guidance from the dietician since my gastric bypass but have just emailed them for advice. Im concerned that I am able to eat too much for 8 weeks post bypass. Tonight I have had a 2 egg omelette with cheese and ham and plum tomatoes. I ate maybe 1/2 -3/4 of the omelette and 2 tomatoes. Is this too much do you think? I feel full but not uncomfortable.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I'm two days after you. March 24th. I just had my phone medical consult. I have a one week diet of 2 protein shakes and one meal per day. Reminds me of the Slim Fast commercials.

    Five Month Post Op Stall

I‘m 5 months post op too (well, in three days I am) and haven‘t lost a single lb in all of February. January and December felt incredibly slow too. We‘re around the same weight (SW: 304lbs, CW: 220lbs). Can I ask how tall you are?
  18. I'm 6 weeks out, and I never have been able to drink as much as prescribed. I seem to swallow air, then I have to burp, then I get nauseated... I try, just hard to do...

    1st day post op vsg

How are you feeling? Are you still in the hospital? Get up and walk 10 minutes an hour if you can. You'll feel tired for about a week after surgery.

    Five Month Post Op Stall

Oh, and as a big believer in sports, but as a non-fan of running: shake it up in the exercise department! Many think it's all about increasing endurance - you've mentioned doubling your steps - and while that's logical and good, it also puts up higher and higher barriers to 'getting your exercise in'. I accepted that I really hate running. But that it does something good for me. So I've made a deal with myself: I'll end every workout at the gym (which is like 2x a week for me, and that's it besides biking around town) with a 5 minute sprint on the treadmill. If I am not exhausted after 5 minutes, I'll run faster - not longer - next time. Just getting your pulse way up there for a little while tells your body 'hey, better be ready for this'. Just an idea
  21. I had my big pre-op appointment with the nurse and surgeon today. They've made some major improvements to the program. They have a stricter infection control protocol. No shaving for a full week before surgery, using the incentive spirometer more before and after, using special soap the night before and morning of surgery. Pain control is totally different. No more pain pump button. I'll get IV pain meds until the leak test the next morning. Then after that it's Tylenol and Flexeril, with the possibility of something stronger if that combination doesn't work well. I'll be taking Colace twice a day for 30 days to prevent constipation. I get to have small sips of water the day of surgery instead of waiting until the leak test the next morning. I will be limited to an ounce per hour to avoid putting too much pressure on the fresh staple lines. While in the hospital I'll gradually increase the amount of fluid per hour. No Foley catheter for the first day either this time. It was nice with the sleeve because I didn't have to get up every 15 minutes to pee. But they're encouraging even more movement post-op than before so there's that. Also, just one day in the hospital instead of 2. Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Five Month Post Op Stall

Frustratingly, stalls can happen once or multiple times while your losing. They can last for a week to 3 or 4 weeks. If they persist, have a chat with your dietician/nutritionalist to review your diet. Sometimes a small tweak can kick start your loss again. I also think you’ve answered some of your own question by saying you’ve let your food choices slide a little (we’ve probably all done it at some time). Best is to get back on your plan re food choices, portion sizes, etc. I have a small window of calorie intake variation to maintain (don’t check my calories everyday but do random checks) & recently I’ve put on a little weight. I’ve realised, in my attempt to up my protein intake a bit (since my gall was removed I don’t absorb it well) I’ve increased my calories. Increasing my portion size of meat (3oz to 4), throwing in some beans to my lunch salads, etc. & there’s the reason for the weight gain. Though I reduced the amount of vegetables I was eating the calorie difference was not enough to compensate. Can’t believe I didn’t realise. My surgeon’s doctor has put me back on Creons to help with protein absorption & I’m going back to my previous eating habits.

    Severe back pain

I’ve had mid to upper back pain and thigh numbness ever since my surgery 3.5 months ago. I haven’t been taking anything for it, but it is annoying. Im seeing a neurologist about it in a couple of weeks.

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

I'm surprised your calories are that low so far out. I eat 900-1200 calories and I'm five months out. Some days are even higher. Maybe try to increase calories for a few days/week to see if that shakes something loose?

    Five Month Post Op Stall

I know people have different opinions about calorie counting, but when I hit a stall (and I also had one at 5 months... and have another little one right now) I think it is really important to measure and track your actual calorie intake to ensure you know what you are doing, not just guessing what you are doing or how much you are eating. So, that would be my recommendation - track and see what you are averaging for calories. Sometimes you may need to increase food intake to push past a stall, though if you are going off program, you probably should see where you are now before going for that approach.
