    Couples WLS?

Well, I’ve scheduled a consult for myself for March 8th. I imagine I’ll be at least a month or so behind my husband depending on my requirements. We have different insurance plans so we will see how it all plays out. We are using the same bariatric practice but as of now, we’ve been assigned different surgeons. Ideally, I would like our WLS to be only a week or so apart but I’ll have to see what they say at the practice.
  2. This is about what the orthopedist I saw recently told me, too -- he was incredibly supportive of my decision to get bariatric surgery. I have OA, so my knees/hips/lower back hurt, too. I just finished 4 weeks of PT and then I slipped and fell -- sigh. My poor knees.

    Any February Sleevers?

Well sit back, have a cuppa of tea and put your feet up. All my prerequirements are done, insurance submitted and back-God I wish we had universal healthcare, they make you jump thru so many firey hoops here. Lady named Trisha called from the surgeon's office, said you're set up for February 15th. Called back, later to set,up presurgery blood work. Lady#2 Well I don't see YOU on the surgery schedule so don't count on it. Sat and cried for 5-10 minutes, got,up and mentally dusted, myself, off and went,to,pay bills. Got back home 2-3 hours later and there's a call on ,my answering machine to please call them back. It is now 5pm and it turns out they left at 4pm. I played scenarios in my mind all weekend. Called them back yesterday, morning, first they couldn't find me on the records, then all they found was a record of all,the doctor consultations I completed,in January. So why did they call me? Duhh they don't know, of course they hadn't left a name or extension number and there about 60 people,in the room, I know this because they got peeved and told me so. Called the surgeon's office once again, had I received,my presurgical packet yet? Nope and the, mail for yesterday had been delivered. Then I spoke to Amber,my Bariatric Facilitator, kind of an ombudsmen between the patients and the Bariatric people. She is going to call or email Kathy, the head scheduler in the surgeon's office and request a face!to-face to discuss my case. Darlin' I'm not getting any younger and this is my last be d t hope at weight loss..I WANT THIS SURGERY! I live 50 miles, approx. 80km from my hospital in Columbus, not always easy to find transport but I've never missed an appointment. Amber is supposed to call me back today (tuesday) a n d I'm anxiously awaiting her call. Its can she or can't she, will she or won't she, cut me or don't cut me. My last.nerve is fraying fast and may just snap soon. I am getting frustrated, growled at my son who had done nothing to deserve it. Now you know the bulk to,my story. Ah I'll get through it somehow. I.m 5ft8in, high weight of 355, currently 323. 72 years old probably the oldest on here but like everyone else,i m in it to win it. I live in cenral Ohio, 14 miles from the geographic center which is Centerburg. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. Dr Dietrick in Tampa. Paid $14,500 for the sleeve. He has a payment plan for his portion of the fee (about $5k) but I paid all at once. Stayed in the hospital one night. I was able to get my insurance to cover the pre-op bloodwork and the EKG though by visiting my primary care doc and having her order them. She made sure not to say they were for pre-op (we were worried insurance would deny it then). Surgeon was excellent. My surgery got cancelled because of the hurricane but he cancelled his vacation the following week so he could take care of the patients like me who had missed their dates. I am 5 months out and had to get my post op bloodwork two months ago. Tried to fool insurance again but since the tests were all for vitamin deficiencies it was pretty obvious it was for post bariatric surgery testing. It was all denied. Ended up costing me $1200. That was a cost the doctor did not prepare me for. Luckily I don't have to get tested again since my levels were all ok.

  8. Don't go by what the hospital and surgeon's bill say. Those are like sticker prices on a car and private college tuition: Nobody except the ignorant and desperate pay that price. Hospitals and surgeons almost never collect 100% of what they bill. Contracts with insurance companies these days usually pay around 30% of billed amounts. Note that the rates are pre-negotiated, so the hospital/surgeon don't get more if they bill more. When a bariatric surgeon quotes you a cash price it's usually near the same amount they would collect from insurance companies and it includes a pre-negotiated split with the hospital. I was quoted $17,000 for the all-inclusive package for gastric sleeve in SoCal, but fortunately I have good insurance coverage and don't have to pay cash. If I drove 30 miles to Beverly Hills I'd get a quote of twice that price from doctors who do not accept any insurance.

In my mind it's natural to have questions, some of which may involve things down the road. All because things you ask about may be down the road doesn't mean you're rushing ahead. You're just curious. Seems that some people think they are so experienced that they can stop others from asking questions by saying "slow down" or "don't panic" or "pump the brakes" as if those asking questions are jumping ahead rather than living in the bariatric moment. We can live in the bariatric moment and still have random questions. Felt discouraged? I'm sorry to hear that. At least you learned who you may not want as a bariatric friend. Obviously, you wouldn't treat someone like that (nor would I). Felt some kind of way? Yeah, I can definitely understand why. You reached out to a new friend and were shut down when you asked a question following the friend inviting you to message with any questions. It's a mind****. There are some nice people on here. I hope you'll stay despite the cold reception.

    Centers of Excellence

OK...Bariatric Centers of Excellence are an American thing.....because they are accredited by two American organizations, one of which is the American Society of Metabolic Surgeons...the other is the Surgical Review Corporation. To qualify, hospitals have to do 140 bariatric procedures per year, and staff has to have extra training in bariatric surgery complications, sensitivity training for bariatric patients, nutrition and post op care, and safely moving bariatric patients. Their accreditation signifies a level of excellence in the field of bariatric medicine. There are currently 778 Bariatric Centers of Excellence in the US.

    United Health Care Insurance

Great info for a current 2018 UHC pre-op. After talking to my UHC Bariatric nurse I already had my appointment set with the Center for Excellence Dr as required. I have slightly different requirements but still the 6 month monitored diet, endoscopy and psychological testing. Everything else is held at the Bariatric Center. It’s really a great place that the doctors work together to have the dietitian, workshops ... whatever is needed right there! I’m hoping I do correctly for the monitored diet plan and progress enough to get approved but not enough to get denied!!

    Purée phase, not feeling anything?

I just made some meat spaghetti sauce for dinner. I have a Vitamix Blender & it makes a nice purée out of ANYTHING. I haven’t had a lot of meat at this point but with burger or chicken added it really does hit me like a ton of bricks at the end of a half a cup. My first sensation of being full was (and I’m not making this up) like a small earthquake. I had to pass on the last few bites. I was eating & suddenly it felt like the room was shaking even though it was my pouch saying ENOUGH! I was actually happy to feel it because to that point I felt like you in your above post when you mentioned you weren’t feeling anything. I eat half a cup every 3 hours every day until 2 hours before bedtime. Water has been surprisingly easy & I’ve had no trouble getting in 2 liters a day since a couple of days after surgery. I also get in at least 1 protein shake sometimes 2 in a day. I don’t take bariatric vitamins every day I take bariatric vitamins one day and calcium the next day. I’ll continue doing this unless my bloodwork says I’m deficient in something. Thicken your meals up or add some meat & let me know what it feels like. I’m curious to know if you get the same sensation/reaction as I did.

    February bypass buddies?

And my story goes on and on. Called this am. First they told me they couldn't find me at all, then they said I didn't have anything scheduled since all the ones completed in January. Talked to surgeon's office person, said it had been submitted and approval, was back, had I received my presurgery packet of paperwork? Nope I said and the mail had gone already today. Well I should have it by Wednesday. Yes she believes it is still,in for that day. Hmmm then Amber my Bariatric Facilitator calls, I tell her all the things that have transpired. She is going to talk to Kathie, the head scheduler in surgeon's office and call me Tuesday morning. My life is becoming a cheap soap opera daily. Is she or isn't she, will she or won't she,to cut or not to cut? HELP! Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

    A day in the life....

I'm not sure how much direct help I can be, as our metabolisms are likely quite different (between a 5'10 man and a 5' woman) but I'm stable at around 2000 calories per day, give or take depending upon how routinely active I am, typically split up between about five meals per day. I do about an hour of dedicated exercise per day, usually split between a half hour or so of running the dogs woods or canyon in the morning (they run, I hike) and a half hour or so of swimming or strength training in the afternoon. I don't keep track of the fluids anymore, but it is at or above the typical 64 oz recommendation (I down a 1.5 liter bottle of water per day, plus ice and whatever other incidental fluids I have - iced tea or milk products; more if I am doing something specifically dehydrating during the day. There is a series of videos from one doc that has some relevance - I'm not entirely up with everything in his program, but he is one of the few that I have seen that discusses the increasing meal volume that we typically see over time, and offers a way to handle it. I do something similar in that I have a fairly vegetable rich diet, and do more of his "veg first" approach rather than the traditional protein first that we see in the bariatric world. It does make some sense in that veg is typically high bulk, high nutrition and low calorie, so does a good job of filling that extra capacity that we develop over time in a way that minimizes the caloric load that leads to regain. The more typical low carb (and worse, low carb, high fat) diets that are all the rage today have some weight gain built into them as they are typically higher caloric density which can lead to regain if one doesn't keep on top of the overall caloric load. So, that is something to consider if that can fit with your dietary personality (something that you can stick with long term.) He has some other vids on related topics that may also be useful. He seems fairly down on revisions as a solution, which fits my experience as there seems little that can be done to a bypass that isn't just a short term fix; a revision to a DS seems to offer the best results but is a very complex procedure that few surgeons can perform, so that tends to be a last resort.
  18. For me it was An EGD also known as an upper GI Visit with surgeon to see if i met program criteria Psychological Pulmonologist Cardiologist Letter from Primary care doctor stating diets didn't work for me and spannng, several years. Mine also stated it was my last best hope for not dieing in the near future (after all I am 72) and that he supported my decision to seek it. I am lucky he also likes me as a friend, his whole practice is emotional supportive. Approval from insurance after all prerequirements are met. Right before surgery, you'll have blood work and an EKG and chest(maybe also abdominal) X Ray. That's all I can think of except many insurances require 3,6, of 12 month diets supervised by the bariatric practice. Remember insurance companies hate to,pay out money unless they are sure its in THEIR best interest. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

  20. So my insurance approved my referral, it was put in on Thursday I believe and got approved Friday. They gave me no issues or run around a which is surprising because I have IEHP and ya know how that goes lol. I got an appointment at Western Bariatric on Valentines Day lol how ironic. Any who what goes on in the first visit? What else will I need to officially be cleared for surgery and to get an official surgery date?
  21. If you have insurance coverage through your employer there's no guarantee that bariatric surgery is covered. Your employer gets to pick and choose what's covered and if they want to save money on premiums they may exclude things often considered non-essential, including bariatric surgery. I discovered last October that my company's PPO policy did not cover it, so i complained to HR and they got it included in the plan effective our next open enrollment date, which was Jan. 1. There may often be exceptions made if your doctor says your life is in danger if you don't have the surgery, but those are rare. So if your insurance says they don't cover it, go to HR immediately and ask them why it's not included in your coverage.

    Advil after surgery

Adval is a NSAID. One of the common problems after bariatric surgery is developing ulcers. Taking NSAIDs can cause that problem, so it is best to avoid.
  23. I am only a few wks postop sleeve but asked my surgeon if I should worry about calories. He told me at this time not to worry about calories, but to follow the rules of 1/4 cup food 3 meals per day with no snacking. One of the meals could be a protein shake. He says by the time I would be out further like you, I would be eating about 1 cup of food per meal with the main focus on protein and the amount of calories would be similar to yours. If you exercise hard, then you may need more calories, but you will be hungrier. We are suppose to have at least 60 grams of protein per day. Plus even at 9 months you shouldnt fret about your weight, your body will be changing in weight and size up to 18 months. I watch many videos by Dr Duc Vuong who is a bariatric surgeon that does informational videos on facebook and youtube. I have learned a lot from him. You may want to check it out. I dont use my fitness pal because it always says you never eat enough calories. I use the baritastic app which is similar bu focuses more on the bariatric patient whethed you had the sleeve or bypass. Hope some of this info was helpful. 25. My insurance required a psychiatrist to sign off. The surgeon gave me the name of the doctor they use and it was quick and easy. I have my own psychiatrist but not all of them do bariatric evaluations so I had to go see this other doctor. Good luck!
