    Met my challenges

Way to go, Liz! Ah New York, where you have things like restaurants with South African food. We socialize a great deal and I'm learning how things vary for me. Yesterday we were going to a cousin's house for a pot-luck-ish dinner. Wouldn't you know I was hungry at 4:30 -- a full two hours before we'd be eating. Nothing to do but have my "tea" consisting of an egg and some yogurt. If I'm hungry I eat, that's my rule for myself. I don't wait. I didn't want to attract attention at the gathering so I took a portion of stew and some salad then played with it. People are generally focused on their own meals once things get started; it's the ordering or serving that I find most uncomfortable.

  3. I am a little over two weeks post-op and I have recently started on mushies. I have been following the diet pretty closely, eating mostly hummus, yogurt, cottage cheese, soup, and protein shakes. The last few days I was wondering if all my food was going bad because it seemed like everything I was eating had a bitter taste, but now I realize that the bitter taste is in my mouth, not my food. Has anyone else experienced this? Also, I know this is "bandster hell" time, and I don't have much if any restriction left, but I have not lost any weight in the last week in spite of the fact that I am eating much less than I used to and very little carbs. I quickly dropped about 10 pounds in the first week and then nothing this week. UUURRG! I already have a fill scheduled for four weeks post-op which is the earliest I can get a fill.
  4. I've been banded for 2 1/2 years and I've encountered an issue in the last two weeks: So for the two years, I always "got stuck" 4 - 5 times a week and I blamed it on myself--eating too much, not paying attention, eating too fast. Right after New Years, it got worse and for two days I couldn't take anything in without getting stuck except yogurt, cottage cheese, and liquids. Last week I suddenly realized I hadn't gotten 'sick' in over two weeks--AND I can eat more without being satiated and nothing seems to get stuck--not to mention the fact that I gained 5 pounds since before Christmas! (And I had only gained back 2 pounds from my lowest weight). I made an appointment for a fill for this Thursday, January 28th, but thought I'd check with you guys to see if anything like this ever happened to anyone. Is it possible my Band was twisted and has straightened out? (Hopefully) I have to tell you that I've only got 4 cc in my 14 cc band. What do you think??

    Cheated on my pre-op

I am on my pre-op too and it is similar to yours. I get three Protein shakes, two Protein Bars or two Greek yogurts, and a sensible dinner. I agree with you that the cheating could have been worse! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Post Sleeve Nutrition

Most of those foods are on my nutritionists list as okay. That being said it is: 2% cheese Peanut Butter is okay in moderation since it is high fat and I watch brands for sugar content coffee Add-ins such as creamer is higher in sugar and some people drink a little coffee with their creamer Greek yogurt in and of itself is high sugar but the Greek 100's are excellent pretzels and chips are a slider food, they don't fill you up and are empty carbs Baked goods, sweets and pudding are high sugar and fat. SF pudding would be a better choice if you gotta. My nutritionist and surgeon say for me to get 60-70g of Protein and no less than 900 calories at this point. I am to eat 3 meals and 2 Snacks. I don't have to count the rest as long as I get protein first, non-starchy veggies second and starches last if there is room. I do a Protein shake for breakfast on the go, lunch is 3 ounces meat and 1 ounce veggies, snack is a Protein Bar, dinner is 3-4 ounces meat and 1 ounce veggies, evening snack is 1.5 ounces fruit. Other than my protein shake in the morning I only drink Water. It is all about the choices we make. Good luck!
  7. I am almost 2 1/2 months out and still eat a very small amount of food. I have seen others that in personally know who were able to eat a lot more. I eat about 5-6x a day. To give you an example for breakfast I can eat 1/2 Greek yogurt and then I'm full.

    Bad Night Bad Morning

Thank you, my uncle passed away after a long and painful struggle. Unfortunately, his passing was very unexpected even though we knew he was ill. I managed to eat a few spoons of yogurt w/ Protein granola. I'll make some soup later. Thanks for the love. Surgery 7/25/12

    Omg!! Too tight again!!!!

Well I ended up going to see my surgeon again. Under fluro 6 weeks after having a removal I had to have even more removed. Not much but it was enought to finally feel better. I can finally eat something again. Yogurt had even started to be a problem. I feel much better today, no headache any more and I don't have a tight chest pain in the middle of my chest. I can breath again.
  10. I'm a vegetarian. Sleeved 9 weeks ago. doing great! no issues getting protein in. Lots of beans, tofu, soy products, whey protein, Greek yogurt, tempeh, low-fat cheese, etc.

    Throwing up :(

I can relate even though it was a long time ago. I felt like for the first two months I had to fight and I mean seriously fight to keep a lot of food down. Hang in there, it does get better. I know- its not really exciting but some of us have more trouble with this than others. I think I only could eat two foods without feeling really sick- fruit flavored baby food and I think yogurt. I wish I had something more helpful to say- maybe someone else will post better advice. But I wish you the best.
  12. I was banded on Wednesday the 7th. I am on day four now, and I feel like I am starving all the time. I have tried Protein drinks, popsicles, juice, gallons of Water (I have no restrictions when it comes to liquids), thinned out Soup, broth, decaf tea and full caf coffee. Milk and yogurt. The only thing I can get down without a hitch is the water, and apparently that is a good thing. But I make a small amount of soup (very thinned out) and sip the whole thing, and right away I am in the kitchen looking at everything that looks good. I think it might be in my head --- well, I am pretty sure some of its in my head, as I have been a vegetarian for years now and my son's ham slices look delicious! I keep thinking "another week of liquids!???" I want apples, and toast, and fajitas, and ............ How to calm the hungries?

    3 Week, Diet?

I will be 4 weeks tomorrow. :-). Week3/4 I am on puréed foods. I have a lot of blended soups. (I LOVE this because I get all the flavor but just don't have the chunks). 6 am Breakfast I usually have a very soft scrambled egg with cheese and hot sauce- takes about 39-45 to eat all of it so I nibble while I am getting ready for work) OR a premier shake 10 am Snack - Sargento string cheese reduced fat ( I'm actually not supposed to have cheese until week 5 but I did it for a couple of days by mistake and then realized I had looked at the wrong week! Ooops! Since it worked well I am still including it. :-) OR Greek yogurt or cottage cheese 12:30 ish- ricotta bake from egg face website OR soup (about 3 oz) takes about 30-40 minutes for thicker soups 4 ish- premier protein shake - takes about an hour for 11 ounces 7ish- 1.5 ounces puréed salmon with 1 ounce mashed potatoes On weekends I usually have a snack a little before bed like cottage cheese, greek yogurt or a cheese stick. And of course water. :-). Somedays it is hard to eat at all and will just have the snacks as my meals. It is usually about 600 calories and 60 gr protein or more.

    Shakes

Greek yogurt, Beans, ground meats (chicken, turkey etc) are all good choices. My nutritionist limits me to 1 shake a day and the rest must come from food. BTW I can't eat eggs either. Don't know why, but they really make me sick too.
  16. So every day when i take my multi Vitamin, i get really sick. light headed, nasuses, cold sweats, just plain nasty feeling. Mothers Day Matters

As long as you aren't on the liquid diet phase I don't see why not. As a matter of fact I am just a bit over one month out and once a week I go to yoyo yogurt with my son and get 4 oz chocolate frozen yogurt. It is only 110 calories and in general I tend to be low on calories. I am learning how to live healthy with the occasional indulgence. If you don't allow yourself some of the stuff you want once in a while, it makes this just another "diet" not a lifestyle change. You are looking at the long term changes and frozen yogurt is a great alternative to a cheeseburger and fries or a pint of icecream. Keep up the good work!
  18. Happy mothers day to all the sleeve mommy's and even the daddies who have to fill both roles. I am a bit upset this year as my husband has decided that he will not join us for any mothers day things so I now need to visit my mom and HIS mom alone with the kiddos and hopefully get a lil break in there myself but I well right? So the real question now that I vented is this... Can I have a taste or 2 of Greek frozen yogurt as the yogo factory just opened in my town and my oldest wants to treat me to that(using my money of course) ?
  19. I'm on regular diet and have been since the first week of july. I had my surgery on june 11. I read the forums and people are able to take in over 70 grams of protein and 64 oz of water a day and are able to keep the carbs less than 30 grams a day. I was told it was better to get most of my proteing from food and not the shakes. The problem is I can't get more than 30- 40 grams of protein (if i'm lucky) and 30 oz of water a day. It take me so long to eat, I keep pushing back when I can drink and then i forget to drink. I'm worried about muscle loss and dehydration. I'm feeling overwhelmed. I've tried greek yogurt and cottage cheese but did not like them. I have been good making sure i eat 2 to 3 times a day. what foods have high protein and low calorie beside meat. thanks for your help.

    Chocolate cravings

I'm writing this while munching on a Dove dark chocolate heart to satisfy my sweet tooth. I'm 18 months post-op. It's that time of the month when chocolate feels like a biological need, haha. For me the cravings for sweets never went away, but I did find satisfying substitutions that I believe actually aided my progress rather than derailed it. In the past whenever I'd feel deprived on a diet I'd eventually cave in and binge on the danishes or ice cream I yearned for, but by having very small, reasonable desserts and snacks that have stayed within the goals I set, I've kept myself contented. During the liquid phase post-op my favorite protein powder was the chocolate one from Unjury. I added in unsweetened cocoa from Trader Joe's for extra chocolatey goodness sometimes. I also like having it with PB2 and iced coffee, or Torani sugar free syrups. I invested in a Nutribullet before surgery, and have really made use of it. I really liked the protein shake recipes on The World According to Eggface's blog, too, and recommend checking them out if you haven't yet. She's got a really winsome attitude and a lot of fun recipes for all stages. When I could start eating solids again I looked for sweets that were lower in carbs and sugar. One of my favorite desserts are the chocolate covered banana bites (Doles makes them, but the brand I like best is at Sprouts grocery stores) because they only have around 15 carbs for a four piece serving, and are just enough to be satisfied but won't derail progress. Trader Joe's also has slim Belgian chocolate bars that are only 100 calories and low in carbs. Other favorites from Trader Joe's are their macrons (three for 15 carbs), lemon bars (I think they're 10 carbs each), and Belgian waffles (big, fluffy, yummy and only 13 carbs!). Chia pudding, Siggi's yogurt, and smoothies made with high protein yogurt and frozen berries are also sweet enough to be enjoyable while still healthy. The cocoa sounds yummy. My main suggestion is to use something like MyFitnessPal to track everything you eat during the weight loss phase so you are really aware of how everything adds up. That way you can make adjustments to be able to add in sweets while still staying on track.
  22. Welcome! There is a pregnancy forum here at LBT. I believe most women get their bands unfilled while preggers to allow for more nutrition. Sometimes bands need to be replaced. You can search pubmed for studies on it. It is an implanted device, and something to be considered. Tell your surgeon you have worked with nutritionists in the past. I only had to do one consultation to be sure I understood how I should eat post-banding. As she is in my surgeon's office, it was part of an insurance-covered office visit with my surgeon. How much you will be able to eat will depend on your restriction level. I am in maintenance mode now. I eat about 1500-1700 calories a day. A meal for me is about 3 oz of solid Protein, 1/2 cup of veggies, and some starch. I do not eat low-carb. I still eat all the foods I used to with the exception of very soft doughy breads (they get stuck) and white meat chicken (also gets stuck). I still have my junk food treats. Just not as often, and not as much. If I cannot eat solid protein, my surgeon wants me to come in for an unfill. It is unacceptable to him for me to rely on Protein shakes and "slider" foods--foods that slide right on through the band. Those are foods like Soups, yogurt, and highly processed junk like chips, Cookies, ice cream, etc. Advice for the early stages...don't get caught up in Last Supper Syndrome. you WILL eat your favorites again. There is no need to gorge yourself on food like you will never eat it again. My diet is pretty "normal" now. Except when my stomach is irritated from a bad stuck episode, most people watching me would not know that I've had weight loss surgery. Don't stock up on boodles of protein shakes until you know that your surgeon wants you on them long-term. I bought a bunch of the stuff after reading on here how many people continue to use them after banding only to find out that my surgeon doesn't want me using them. He wants me eating my calories. I was only allowed them during the full liquid phase of post-op. This forum is a great place for support. My surgeon has support groups, but his are too late in the evening for me to attend as I start work early in the morning. I hang out here a lot and credit it with with my continued success. It helps me keep my head in the game. In real life I only know one other banded person. It's great to come here and be able to connect with peeps who "get it!"

    Need cheap--non food--Valentine's Day ideas...

A rare steak. Cook the dude a high quality piece of meat and cook it rare. Close to hemmorhaging on the plate. Serve it with whatever he likes to drink although the ideal booze would be a really good red wine, a bordeaux or a burgundy. Men like red meat and high quality rare meat is kinda wet and thus is band friendly as long as you chew, chew, chew. He will eat most of the meat, you know. The vegies you serve along with this must be not be canned or frozen. You could, for instance, serve fresh green beans slightly blanched and then sauteed in butter/olive oil with garlic plus mashed potatoes but mash them spuds with yogurt or low fat sour creme and lots of garlic. This makes them taste especially rich and yummy. If the two of you eat garlic together you will be able to make successful whoopee. Trust me. I used to live with a Frenchman. Ply him with garlic, red meat, and his favourite alcohol and all will be just fine.......... Green knows about these things.
  24. I'm calling these "shakers" because I shake them up in my Blender Bottle (love the bottle, got 2 from amazon.com) :Dancing_biggrin: My dietician wanted me to try 5 different Protein Drinks and report in on our next visit, I'm still pre-op doing my 6 month insurance required stuff... She wants me to already know what I like for after surgery so I'm not just thrown in and not sure what to eat/drink. Here are the 5 recipes: Dreamsickle Yogurt Shaker 1 container orange yogurt 1 yogurt container of milk 1 Serving vanilla Instant Breakfast powder or Vanilla Protein Powder Shake in blender bottle, chill and enjoy. (Not tried this one yet) Alternate: 1 container plain yogurt 1 yogurt container of orange juice 1 Serving Vanilla Instant Breakfast Powder Cappuccino Shaker 1 cup cold coffee 1 cup milk 1 Serving Vanilla Instant Breakfast Powder or Vanilla Protein Powder 2-4 splenda packets (optional) Shake in blender bottle then put in freezer for 30 minutes. (I didn't like this one) Note: If it's too much liquid, I read you can skip the liquid coffee and use some instant coffee granules. Mocha Shaker 1 cup cold coffee 1 cup milk 1 Serving chocolate Instant Breakfast Powder or Chocolate Protein Powder 2-4 splenda packets (optional) Shake in blender bottle then put in freezer for 30 minutes. (I like this one) Note: If it's too much liquid, I read you can skip the liquid coffee and use some instant coffee granules. Island Yogurt Shaker 6 oz pineapple Juice 1 Pina Colada Yogurt (or pineapple coconut yogurt) 4 oz Milk (optional) 1 Serving Vanilla Instant Breakfast Powder or Vanilla Protein Powder Shake in blender bottle. (I like this one) Will try in blender and add a banana sometime. Strawberry Yogurt Shaker 1 container strawberry yogurt 1 yogurt container of milk 1 Serving Strawberry Instant Breakfast Powder or Strawberry Protein Powder Shake in blender bottle. (I like this one) Will try in blender and add a banana, bet it would be good. --------------------------------------------- The ones with the yogurt had some small chunks of fruit, so not sure what stage they would be good for. ---------------------------------------------

    Lack of nutrition

Most people at this stage are still on a liquid diet. If you are finding it hard to get down the things that your Dr has recommended try going back to liquids. Protein shakes, thin Soups, fruit and veggie juices etc. The focus at this stage is on healing not weight loss so generally it is OK to drink things such as juice which are not recommended later on. If you are struggling with the yogurt try thinning it out a little with some extra milk. HTH
