    Is my weight loss normal?

    There is no right or wrong rate of loss. There is just what is right for you because we lose at our own rate. Many factors influence your rate of loss: age, gender, starting weight, genetics, etc. You’ll find in all your weight loss experiences there are averages but with all averages some do better & others not as well & that’s ok. There’ll also be things you’ll have in common with some people & things you won’t. Remember, how fast or slow you lose doesn’t affect whether you reach your goal or not. There are some things you can depend upon. The more you have to lose the faster you lose to begin. The closer you are to your goal the slower your loss will be. And you likely will experience at least one stall (usually lasting 1-3 weeks). Good luck.
  3. 1Thank you so much everyone. @Butterflyeffect, I'm about the same height as you and pretty active, especially when I'm a lower weight, so hearing you can eat like that and still lose weight is helpful. And of course, I do trust "my team". So far they're all great and I can't wait to continue down the path.

    March surgeries

    Hi I had gastric sleeve surgery on march 18, 2021 at Cleveland Clinic by Dr Benscath. I am doing wonderfully well. I met my goal a long time ago and I am trying to slow down my weight loss. This is my first day on this website and hope all is well with you guys.
  5. Hi @doobie31, I also think it may depend on the type of surgery you end up having. I had the SADI and during the loss phase I was very satisfied and consistently lost each week when I consumed 700 to 800 calories per day. Now that I’m trying to maintain, I’m up around the 1600 to 1800 calories a day and if I’m very active then I need around 2000 to not lose more weight. With my restriction, I am finding it difficult to each that much at the moment but it will get easier over time. Each person is different and will have different needs but as all of the other posts have said, it becomes a new way of living and it’s definitely worth it.     P.S. Just wanted to add that some people don't even see a big drop during month 1. Most of that big initial drop is water weight - so for people that lost a lot of weight prior to surgery, that "water weight" is long gone. I lost 16 lbs the first month, 12 lbs the second, and then I averaged around 10 for a few months after that (give or take). I ended up losing over 200 lbs, so in the long run, it's how committed you are to your program rather than your rate of weight loss that matters.

    that averages out to 4 lbs a week - so yes, that's normal. You normally see the biggest drop the first month (maybe two), after that, 2 or 3 lbs a week is pretty average. I'd also lost 39 lbs when I was where you're at, and I started out much heavier than you. I think a lot of people's expectations are shaped by shows like "My 600 lb Life", but you have to keep in mind that people on that show start out A LOT heavier than your average bariatric patient - so you can't compare yourself to them. If you're sticking to your plan, staying active, and your overall weight trend is done, you're good.
  8. I had gastric bypass on 09/09/2021 and I have lost 39 lbs. so far after 10 1/2 weeks. Is this a normal amount of weight loss for that amount of time? People will ask me how much weight I've lost and when I tell them they ask if I've been cheating. I have been following the plan but it bothers me that I'm not losing faster.

    Yes, and that diet requires you have a 2,500 calorie deficit per day. That's more than the total calories per day you'd eat now to maintain the weight you're at. Idk--they must know what they're doing. But sometimes, ya gotta wonder.
  10. I was also diagnosed with diabetes type 2 no meds just dieting (which was not my thing 😂) and exercise. My surgeon told me your glucose levels will start to get better. I’ve read that in most cases or about in 85% diabetes would be cured aka go into remission . I have seen my numbers come done from an average of 150-160 fasting pre-op to pre-diabetes number 100-120 which is not bad at all. And again I know all bodies are different. I would love to read from fellow members that have gone thru same experience, and theu marvelous tool of weight loss surgery and lifestyle changes their diabetes has been cured, gain better control or gone into remission.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    Crazy Scale victory... So, from the time I started my pre-OP diet for 1 week prior to surgery.... that was 2 weeks ago today, until now... 1 week post-OP, I'm down 40#. Non Scale victories... soreness almost gone. Water weight in legs and hands vastly gone. But most importantly, I did all of this due to an arrhythmia and that too is now 95% gone.

    Hair Loss

    I had a one week pre op diet. And i did see my surgeon on the 18th and told the nurse of my weight loss stall. She said, its because im not meeting my protein/water goals, and thats true. Later that night, had a zoom meeting, with another nurse from the surgeons office, and talked about hair loss as a random topic. She also mentioned same thing(protein/water goals), and adding zinc and biotin, using baby shampoo(because of less chemicals) and washing hair one or two times per week. I started biotin and zinc yesterday. And its tough for me to make it to my 80g protein and 64oz. I just didnt expect this so soon. Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. 🤞 Good Luck, I just had my 2nd surgery from Sleeve issues to Bypass on 11/15/21 I was very luck to have great Md this time around and had me take Sleeve and Bypass and Nutrients Classese before doing anything of surgery the 2nd time around. I was large person my whole life but I reach a max weight of 420 and got down to 245 with old fashioned way diet and become gym rat., after that got down 218 was not moving., I took this classes for 4 months and it took me away and I start to drop weight in two months went to 187 now., im fighter and my mind is set to never use foods to control something out of my control and to face it head on., I was good to block out Pain I didn’t come to this after losing beloved Family’s Members and used foods to not deal with it. But now it’s did story., Good Luck with things and keep in touch
  14. Before I had my sleeve in late July of 2012 I was 199 lbs. By March of 2013, I was below 130 and I looked sickly. Kinda like a lollipop... my head seemed too big for my body. I do have pics - just ask. I hope you are healthy above all. I was happy when I regained and maintained in the 140-150 lb. range. Now I am doing a revision VSG to RNY and at a much higher re-gain weight (for many reasons). Be well.

    Can you show me your food log?

    I don't log meals. I log calories I eat in a day. I used to not do that, but the amount of stalls I have is annoying so I was trying to see if I was eating too many calories. I was. I'm not anymore lol. So Friday's log was as follows (not doing Saturday's because I was busy shopping and baking all day and although I only ate 1115 calories... that was because I skipped lunch because I'm an idiot). So yeah, Friday's: Banana (105 calories) Light Greek Yogurt (80 calories) 2 no sugar added fudgesicles (80 calories) Turkey Enchilada (homemade. 250 calories) Light Greek Yogurt (80 calories) Protein Shake (160 calories) Tater Tot Casserole (340 calories) Light Greek Yogurt (80 calories) Almonds (160 calories) Total Calories= 1335 Calories For reference, I'm almost 22 months post-op so I'm a bit farther in my journey. I also don't drink my calories. I drink Powerade Zero's (which have no calories, no sugar, no fat, and only 2 carbs per bottle). I also round up my calories btw which is why they're all even lol. My calories for that day are probably closer to 1315-1325, but I always round up because I'm weird like that. And I've already reached my goal weight, but haven't reached maintenance yet.

Sleeved on 07/27/2012 by Dr. Jaime Ramos-Kelly Before Pre-op Diet: 199 lbs (BMI 33.1) Weight Surgery Day: 188 lbs Sept. 1, 2012: 177 lbs. Oct. 1, 2012: 166 lbs. Nov. 1, 2012: 157 lbs. Dec. 1, 2012: 147 lbs. Jan. 1, 2013: 141 lbs. Feb. 1, 2013 138 lbs. (starting looking way too thin) Mar. 1, 2012 132 lbs. (between size 0-2) Horrible GERD/ Acid Reflux Infected gallbladder for most of 2015. Finally able to have removed in 08/2015 Maintained or gained 5-10 (138-148 lbs.) for about 4/5 years thru 2017 Back to pre-op weight of 199 lbs. by 2019/2020 Pandemic hit and now I am 230 lbs. before surgery (BMI 38.3) Scheduled for Sleeve to RNY: 12/2/2021 with same Dr. Ramos-Kelly in Tijuana, Mexico Looking for some kind souls that want to share the journey. Worried about how effective it is the 2nd time around. Looking forward to helping my GERD. The extra 30 lbs. means more months to reach goal. Oh yes and I am fretting about the hair loss.     November 2021 surgeries

    You have to set your mind and get rid of old habits., I get you I was like this before but after I got my 2nd Surgery from Sleeve headache by Md to bypass., I took classes in Nutrition relationship with Sleeve and Bypass and Realtionship with food., I drop a lot of weight before my 2nd surgery I didn’t really need to my case was special type case., I’m happy I got the bypass it’s not easy this new one but I came prepared this time around.
  18. I am losing about 4 lbs. a week. at 2.5-ish months out, and am about halfway between surgery weight and goal. BUT: 1. Everyone loses at their own rate. 2. I'm a dude, and as unfair as it is, it seems easier for guys to lose weight even after WLS. 3. I work and workout like a fiend. I would talk to your surgeon about your inability to keep stuff down or to eat more than an ounce at a time. That's concerning.
  19. Totally the three-week stall. It lasted a bit over a week for me and then WHOOOOOOOOSH the weight came flying off. I'm averaging a bit over 4 lbs. a week now (hooray for the honeymoon period!) and 59 lbs. from goal. I know it'll slow down as I get closer to equilibrium, but for right now I love it. No te rajes!!

    It’s all about moderation. Give a little here. Take a little there. When it comes to Christmas (no thanksgiving in Australia but Christmas is BIG here & celebrations can last a couple of days) I eat much the same way as I do any other day: meat & vegetables in the same portion sizes I usually have. We don’t tend to use lots of cheese, cream, heavy dressings, etc. anyway which makes things easier. I avoid sweet foods like desserts, cakes, etc. 99% of the time but Christmas Day is one of the rare times I will have something sweet: a little Christmas cake, a sliver of pudding, a little jelly & custard (no pavlova or cheesecake). I’m the one who always makes the desserts for Christmas & I make them using real sugar because I eat it so rarely & have such a small amount of the desserts it’s okay. This will be my third Christmas post surgery & it hasn’t caused a hiccup to my weight yet - fingers crossed it continues. I should also add we have at least an hour break between our main meal & dessert during which time we go for a walk around the neighbourhood to look at Christmas lights, etc., play cricket, swim (not me - lol) or play some other games in the yard with the little ones.
  21. At two months I’d lost about 12kg (26lbs) from my surgery weight & by the end of the 3rd month I’d lost about another 5kg (11lbs) so it was slowing by then. But as @The Greater Fool said, we all lose at our own rate. There are many factors that influence your rate of loss: age, gender, starting weight, metabolic rate, genetics, etc. I’d encourage you to have a conversation with your dietician & surgeon about your progress especially if you’re concerned & as you’re still predominately getting your nutrition from protein shakes. What does your plan recommend you should be eating at this point? Personally I gave shakes up from week 3 purée stage - was always my intention. At two & three months I was eating 1/4 - 1/3 cup of food 3 times a day plus a high protein yoghurt or yoghurt drink. Also had started adding vegetables & a little fresh fruit. But we are different in what & how much we can eat eat as we progress. I hear you about the dizziness & lack of energy. Dizziness caused by drops in blood pressure is not uncommon to begin (unless you’re like me & always had a tendency to low blood pressure & then you live with it forever). Try adding an electrolyte drink to your fluids each day to give you a good boost. I carried a bottle of diluted hydralyte with me everywhere for months.
  22. The weight is possibly off too quickly for your start weight, sounds like you need to be eating some more too given the weak/dizzy feeling. Is there a dietician on your program?

    How much did weight loss slow down for you?

    i know, its just that i've lost half of my excess weight in two months. i don't think it's supposed to be this fast. and honestly i don't think my surgeon is keeping track of me well enough for him to worry.

    good job! I don't know your gender, but if you're female, 15% body fat is crazy low. When I got down to 22% body fat, I was told I should stop trying to lose weight (by both the DEXA technician and my PCP). I think 15% might be OK for males, though - low, but OK (I should add that I'm in my 60s - that might make a difference. Doctors tend to like us with a little more fat than younger people. We need it in case we get sick..)
  25. There are several thousand posts about something called the 'three week stall'. It happens usually within the first month post op to the majority of people who have the surgery. Your body is simply taking time to adjust itself. Most of the time there really isn't anything you can do, but to ride it out. Stalls happen. Often times, you can change the way you eat to try and start it back up or add in exercise and nothing will change. They, on average last 1-3 weeks. It'll end when it ends. Just stick to your plan and you'll be fine. I've had multiple stalls throughout my journey, including several (3) that went into the 40-odd day range. They are incredibly frustrating and disheartening, especially when you're no where near your goal weight. You don't get used to them, even if you're like me and get them a LOT. In fact, I just got out of my longest stall yet! I thought, 'this is it, I'm in maintenance' and yet after being in a stall for 46 days I lost a pound. Then 4 days later I lost another pound. So my body just wants to lose at it's own pace. You're still in the beginning of your journey and your weight loss WILL pick up again as this stall is extremely common! Just keep to your plan and it'll break eventually!
