  1. I am a 61 year old female. I have had one knee replacement and need another knee and a hip replaced. Why I waited this long I don't know, but I want to enjoy 20 more years with my grandkids, so I went for the lapband. I am not having any problems, just feel like someone punched me in the stomach. I am having trouble (I think) knowing if I'm full. I sure don't want any slippage or vomiting.
  2. Carfigure

    7 days post op

I felt the same way and did the same as you did and continue doing the same, my surgery was the 4th I am 12 post op. I was suppose to be on liquids for 3 weeks but it was impossible I got to a point that I cried because I was starving my follow up appt is tomorrow will let my Doctor know tomorrow will let u know what she says... Good luck
  3. I was sleeved March 10. Started period early (day before surgery which I know is common bc of stress). Then in April and May I was normal (30-32 day cycles) but now for June it still hasn't came. I'm not pregnant but a week late. Normal? Going to ask my surgeon in Wednesday but wanted others thoughts.
  4. Rev Me Up!

    feeling sad and sick

Hi, I was sleeved on the same day I found I felt the worst and had the most trouble with fluids in the first 2 weeks. To be honest, I still don't get in as much Fluid as is recommended. Try eating sugar free popsicles - they tend to go down better, I don't know why. Maybe the slow melting simulates the small sips you are supposed to take. Also, if you feel like you are too restricted, tell your doctor and see if they need to scope you to make sure the stomach entrance is open wide enough. Have you moved on to any mushy foods at all? eating mushy foods SAVED ME. I was able to eat just a little and then spend my time concentrating on drinking. Although I don't have problems with dry-heaving, I am still struggling with fatigue - some days are better than others. I think it hits people differently. I can walk slowly for about 30 minutes in the evening and then I am wiped out. Before surgery, I could walk for hours. Make sure you get some Zofran disolvable (its the best anti nausea med), and be sure to take your Nexium or PPI meds to keep your acid levels down. Good luck--- Lara

I guess it was my turn

Thank you guys so much. I am glad it's not uncommon around the 3 week mark. I know better days are ahead they just seem a long way. Thanks!

    Coffee Question?

My team allows coffee right after surgery and I can count it as fluid. It was very bitter the first week, but now I look forward to it every morning. I used to drink three cups but now just one satisfies me.

I guess it was my turn

Yup. I had a day like that around the three week mark too. It gets so much better when you move to soft foods. You'll feel better. But I know NOW would be good. Some days just suck but the better days are definitely coming!

    Hello from Alabama!

it is understandable you have concerns - I am newly banded (3 1/2 weeks post op) but here is my experience and comments so far from my Journey Since your job is a desk job 0ne week off should be more than sufficient - Most people have surgery We or Thursday and are back to work by Monday - (I travel extensively for my job and when I am not traveling I work form Home -) I had surgery Wed and checked emails Thursday and back to conference calls and paper work Friday - I took my pain meds all day Wed - 2 xs Thursday and then Friday before bed - I have not taken any pain meds since. As far as hunger goes the first week you will not be very hungry - once you get off the liguid diets and start mushies (very soft foods) and then get to solids your hunger will go away - there is also of course head hunger which is not real hunger but your head is tellign you to eat As you go on in the journey and become hungry more than 4-5 hours between meals - that is when you get a fill to help alleviate the hungry's For me the band is working very well - I eat 3 meals a day without hunger in between - I do not even think about food until I get hungry -- which is totally different form before the lap band - Food was a big part of my day prior to surgery I was fortunate and did nto have significant gas pains (which are typical with this surgery) until the 4th day - a heating pad, Gas X and Hot tea and walking helped tremendously (which you could probably do at your job If needed) I was on my sgtatioanry bike by 5 days (slowly yes bit still excercising) It sounds like you are wanting this for all the right reasons - keep researching and ask lots of questions Its sounds like you have the desire and motivation to make the band workj with you I wish you luck and let me knwo your progress and descion
  9. Hi all... I just wanted to give you all a little info about cell reception at florence hospital. Yes, they have Wifi and it works pretty well. In my room the reception was mostly roaming with spotty Verizon popping up for a few seconds here and there. I did call the hospital front desk and they connected me a few times But i did find great cell reception in the front patio along the wall were there is a row a chairs. In that area I got 3 whopping bars of Verizon on my cell phone. Yahoo! Hope this helps.
  10. I have allergies and get sinus infections. I had an upper respiratory infection right after surgery. The post nasal drip made me vomit a couple of times. I take a steroidal nasal spray. It took a few weeks to work but keeps tings pretty well under control
  11. If you are 100% sure this was a hypoglycemic incident, completely ignore me. I have had this issue a few times, most recently 2-3 times while I was walking this spring. I found myself super light headed, dizzy, nauseous, and shaking. I made it home fortunately and I inhaled a bunch of granola and carbs, which fixed the situation but completely freaked me out. After that I made an appointment to have all of my blood tests done for nutrition and CBC values and everything came back normal including my glucose. Because I was a little paranoid, I also got both a BP cuff and a glucose monitor to use at home the next time the situation happened. When it did, my BP was a little low at around 100/70, but my glucose was right around 82-ish if I remember, which is normal. I started focusing on making sure I was well hydrated and I carried around granola with me while I was working out and it hasn't been an issue since. So, it may have been a drop in sugar or it may have just been a fluke like happened to me. I can understand the frustration about having to eat when your glucose drops, but what you ate doesn't really sound all that bad for you and it resolved your issue. Hopefully you have no more incidents!

    Medications

Yes , blood thinners are very important after surgery. You don't want a blood clot for Christmas! I had a two week supply of lovenox injections, not too fun , but better safe than sorry!

    So tired today ...

Hey, Being tired is normal - also with your profession it will kick your butt. You have to realize that you did have surgery and your body is adjusting to the change of food intake also. But you really need to follow the program on the stages. It is this healing time that will help with ensuring that your band will stay in place (by allowing it not to be working digesting) during this early recovery time. With your job, it will be all about planning.. I know it is easier said than done. However, you have invested the $$ and the time for the surgery - give yourself the care you deserve. I know when i had my surgery 2 yrs and 135#s ago, it was 2-3 months before i was back up to par. Sounds like you will have to look for things that have high protien in small quanities so you can grab and go. Which for me is was part of my wt problem to begin with. Eating on the run/drive/walk/sitting LOL... Just know that you will begin to have MORE energy than you had before but now your body is recovering. Good Luck!
  14. I am Begining week 4 and have noticed my weightless has slowed down quite a bit.,. Any tips to get it started again? Please and thank you!
  15. Take a very deep breath and decide if you are truly ready for this to happen. If you are, none of the other stuff should matter at all. Take things one step, one day at a time and that is how it all becomes less overwhelming. This includes the 3 week diet. It really is not that bad and will kick start your weight loss, ensure you have a healthier liver and make things safer. I can tell you that every bit of this is worth it in the end. I am 14 months post op, down 135lbs and 10 lbs from my goal. I thank god everyday for putting the Bariatric community on this earth to help us get healthy. When you feel the stress practice breathing very deep, it can be calming. Good luck to you!

    This is really hard.

You're doing great so far.. it just takes time. It took me 5 hours to finish my first Protein drink. That was a lot of fun..... There were two things that helped me. For the first few days, I was in a recliner.. but getting up and down still hurt a little bit. I got a small pillow and used it to splint with whenever I had to do something that put tension on my incisions and it helped me a lot. Also good for coughing/sneezing/deep breathing and what have you. The other thing.. I had a big insulated cup that I kept ice Water in. I only had to fill it up twice to get in all the fluids I needed for that day. I had a 4 oz measuring cup that I would pour what I was actually going to drink in, twice an hour or so.. that way my water would stay nice and cool, and I wouldn't have to stare at this big glass of water that I just knew was going to take me forever to finish. Might seem silly, but having a smaller glass made drinking easier. I still felt like I was CONSTANTLY having to drink something, but I didn't dread it as much and I could at least see my progress. I guess too.. if you're still sore from surgery, don't be afraid to take something for pain. If you don't have any prescription medication left or when you run out, Tylenol children's fast melts are a pretty good choice early on. The kid's liquid Tylenol was horrible to me, but the fast melts weren't too bad.. Anyway.. just keep going! You just had surgery after all.. totally normal to be going at a snail's pace for a little while after that. You'll feel better every day though.. At two weeks out, I was pretty much back to doing whatever.. so you'll get there!

  18. Melting. That's what I want to do. Mellllllt away! I know the band certainly won't make that happen but at least I won't be steadily expaaaaaanding instead! Tomorrow is the first day of my two-week pre-op diet and I'm committed to following it. I honestly don't think I've been truly committed to any diet in well over fifteen years. We'll see how well I can hang. I have been intentionally reading all the horror stories I can find about fatty livers, open surgeries, ruptured livers, cancelled surgeries and every other thing that can happen if I don't lose some weight before the big day. I hope fear motivates me since nothing else has. My pre-op diet is two or three unjury shakes with skim milk and a Lean Cuisine every day. Ironically, my "last supper" tonight was one of the Lean Cuisines. Of course, I only ate that because I was still hungry after I ate my roommate's leftover french fries that she had thrown away. Yes, you read that correctly. I got them out of the garbage. That's how pathetic I am. (Before anyone unfortunate enough to actually read this starts vomiting, I'd like to add that they were still relatively fresh and still in the fast food bag on TOP of the garbage.) Good Lord. How do I even think I can justify something like that? :rolleyes2::biggrin: I'm only putting this on my blog for the world to see because I'm hoping and praying that someday I'll be a big success story around this board. Right now I can't think of a soul who is going to read this but I'm optimistic that someday someone will want to see how I did it and where I came from. I guess you can't come from anything much lower than eating trash out of the garbage, can you? I already have two friends and my Mom who want to have a "last meal" with me before the surgery but I'm going to have to say no. I have to keep reminding myself that this pre-op diet is for my SAFETY and this time whatever weight I lose won't come back on in a week's time. Wish me luck. =)

    So tired today ...

I'm a nurse too, I was out of work nearly 8 wks, due to dehydration. I am 3 months out and still have not regained all my energy. Part of it as you know is the recovery from anesthesia, it can take weeks. Your energy level is lower, less food source, and calories. It will get better, just hang in there. You may need even longer than another week!! Everyone is different...you have a job that is physically demanding..be good to yourself. :wink2:

    So tired today ...

My surgery was May 18th. My main problem is walking my dog, cause she needs alot of exercise. I am ok with walking a little, but not when she pulls me. I take her to a dog beach in the morning to do about 2-3 miles of walking. I am pretty pooped after that and can't do any more exercise the rest of the day. I figure this is because there is very little caloric intake. I am supposed to just be on clear liquids for the first week, but have started adding in pureed foods and soup because I was tired of juice and broth.

    Insulin Pump Settings

Hey Audrey, I also have Adult Onset Type 1. So much fun, isn't it? I had the sleeve before trying to start with the pump so I'm not much help on settings and such, but my endo is the one who suggested this surgery and gave me list of how to take my insulin before the surgery and after in the different stages of feeding (liquid, mushies, soft, etc...) I'm 5 weeks out and I will say the results so far have been amazing! I went from taking between 60-90 units of insulin a day total to about 2 units every other day. Now that I'm eating more solids, I'm just taking a nightly dose of 6 units of Lantus and it's keeping my blood sugars stable all day. This is surgery is truly a miracle! Good luck! P.S. I've never met another Adult Onset Type 1...apparently we are pretty rare! Nice to meet you!
  23. I was okay until I fell about a week and a half ago. We had to walk my daughter into school to talk to the teacher. Dusty, slippery floor, and a four year old sort of under foot. Next thing I know my feet slid out from under me. Got my little one out of the way but ended up spread eagle on the floor. I actually debated if I had cracked my ribs. (I did that in a fall before) I have fibromyalgia so I knew it would hurt. A week later I still hurt. Saw my primary doctor on Wednesday. She felt around. Asked when I see the surgeon again because I am about two months out. I said another month. She said call his office she would like him to check. Now I am nervous. I had pain before and the surgeon said it was from the hernia repair. Unfortunately my daughter is having some major health issues. I had to take her three hours away to the children's hospital Thursday. Got back earlier than expected and tried to call the surgeon but never got a call back. Of course my surgeon doesn't see patients on Fridays. Now I am stuck until Monday when it's supposed to snow. In the meantime I am still in pain and it's worse when I eat. Ended up vomiting once today which didn't help. Sorry this is long I'm just a wee bit terrified. The only good news is that after I fell I was able to get up by myself. I'm still a big girl just over three hundred pounds. So has anyone else fallen a couple months out? Were you okay? Thanks

    Rigorous Pre-Op Eating Plan/Diet

I had my RNY July 2, 2013. My Preop was Prtein drinks for 2 weeks and Postop 4 weeks of Protein drinks. To be honest I was so ready to stop my merry go round I really didn't have a hard time either pre or post. I was honestly afraid not to follow my guidelines because I didn't want him to decide not to do my surgery. postop I was terrified I would do something that would undo it. I am so glad m mind was at this setting. Good Luck

    Beach Time? Or Not?

My instructions was no swimming (immersion in water) until my incisions had completely healed over -- no scabs or holes. That happened by my fourth week. Now if only the weather would cooperate I am cleared to swim.
