1. I had gastric bypass on march 2013 I gained weight back how can I lose it again?
2. I am 5 days out from surgery and have gained about 6 lbs. which is more than I weighed the day of surgery. Someone on one of the other threads said that is not unusual because of all the IV's they give you in the hospital. Is that the case for any of you. I know I have to be patient, but gaining weight is NOT what I am looking for. I , like the rest of you, am eating little. Still on liquids. When will the scales start to go down, not up? Of course would like some instant results like I got on the liver shrink diet when I lost 16 lbs. The day of surgery I was 286 and now am 292. Please let me know this is not unusual. Thanks. I am also so glad we have this group. I have asked some "wild" questions, and have always gotten a response, so am glad we are all here together for support.
3. lucyavery, I think I get hung up on gaining the weight back because of the effect it has on everyone around me...When you are losing and feeling good, people are encouraging you and praising your hard work. Then, when I have gained the weight back, I feel like I let them down as well as myself. It's almost like if I was an alcoholic who keeps falling off the wagon. My friends are supportive but I begin to feel like they just stop saying anything because they figure I'll just gain the weight back. Pretty much, I'm a mental case with this weight loss. I mean having to go back to the gym after I let myself go and look at the people that were encouraging me and have them see me fail....it just sucks! The banding is a pretty big step, I just want to know that I'm doing the right thing if I go through with it. Obviously, I have seen people having some real success on the forum here. I'm so sick of food and being hungry...I'm going to the gym tomorrow, need to work out, holidays are over! Thanks for telling me like it is...and now I have dwelled on the weight gain even more, but maybe now you can see why I worry about it so much. I had a friend in the Navy, a lady, who said if she gained too much weight she just wouldn't eat until she was back where she wanted to be...I just thought, if it was only that simple. She couldn't understand why I didn't just do what she does.....................................

6. Generally, when a problem is flagged by the psych evaluator, it results in the individual being referred to a psychiatrist for further evaluation. Since you already have a therapist, it seems like their opinion should carry significant weight. Since weight gain has a psychological component, the purpose for including a psychological evaluation is to determine if you will benefit from the surgery or if psychological problems would deprive you of its benefits.
7. I got a book at my nutrition class all about the whole process of bariatric surgery. There is a section in it that has habits of successful habits of WLS patients --a list of Do's & Dont's. Anyway, weighing oneself everyday was promoted as a do. The rationale was that the patient would be awared of small weight gains and get on top of them before they became big gains. Until this past Thursday, I did not have a scale at home, so only ever weighed at doctor's appointments. Now that I have the scale at home I find myself weighing almost everyday. I am hesitant to trust what my at home scale says, until I have a better idea of the variation between it and the doctor's scale. I am trying to wait for my next appt on the 18th. My at home scale said I was down to 200 this morning . But since the only weight that "counts" is the one the doctor's scale registers, I am not touching the ticker yet. I hope there will not be a huge variation between my scale and the doc's. :mad2:

When is the right time for a fill?

Hi Will, It is hard to give an exact answer to your question, there is not a set formula, as every body works so differently. After my first fill of 2cc's, my surgeon said to come back in a month or sooner if I was very hungry between meals and started eating an amount that caused me to gain weight. I never gained, so I would go in for a fill each month. I had 3 fills of 2cc and my last fill was just 1cc and I think I am either at my sweet spot or very close to it. I found my surgeon's direction of 'if you are eating enough to cause weight gain, then you need a fill' a good guide line.

Too fat now too skinny

Mami, if I remember correctly, you maintain a food log (MFP?). Have you tried increasing your daily calorie goal by 100-200 calories for a week and seeing what impact that has on your weight? I've dropped lower than my goal a few times and a moderate increase in my calorie intake has always got me back on track. Logging has worked equally well for me for weight gain, weight loss or maintenance.
10. Hi Everyone...I'm new to this site, as well as this journey. Tipping the scale has always been a huge fear factor for me...and yet I've managed to do it several times. The smallest I've been ever in adult years was 120lbs, and I was only 21. I managed to ride the roller coaster of weight gain in small increments and eventually skimmed the edge of the 140lb mark until I was about 26...and pregnant. By the time I gave birth to my son, I was a whopping 227lbs. The weight didn't melt away in my post pregnany workouts. It took a lot of work, appetite suppresant pills, water aerobics and a bunch of whinning. But my body finally gave in, and allowed me to maintain a more curvaceous physique where I hovered over the realm of 160-165lbs. It took time to accept that I would probably never get to 120lbs again, but at least I was comfortable. Fastforward 10 years later, and I am sick to my stomach every time I step on the scale at the doctor's office, or in my bathroom at home. I never imagined that I would weigh 200lbs or more. As of today, I weigh 236lbs, and my body is screaming at me. My once small frame is proportionately lopsided as my stomach bulges out of anything I wear. I refuse to wear pants, unless I absolutely have to wear them...and that is usually when all of my dresses are unavailable waiting to be dry cleaned or washed on the gentle cycle. This summer I found myself buying dresses as often as I could, because I was comfortable. Pants restrict me, and searching for a shirt or blouse to hide the muffin top and wide hips is not a convenience. I remember the first time the scale bypassed the 190 mark and landed on 201. I was devasted. I kicked into high gear and tried every type of diet you can think of...including Weight Watchers. I joined several weightloss clinics and received B12 shots and more appetite suppressant pills. The journey was hard and depressing. I ordered every workout DVD you can think off, including the latest and greatest Shawn T's T25. Check out the rest of my story! http://www.bariatricpal.com/user/240301-fatdiva14/

Gaining weight back

If you have gained weight on that diet then go to your doc. Unexplained weight gain could be from a medical condition.

We all are very different. We lose at different rates & our experiences of stalls can be different - longer or shorter duration, more of less frequently. I’m sorry you are experiencing this frustrating plateau. As @ms.sss asked, what are your stats? What is your caloric intake? Do you track your food & does your nutritionalist review it with you. There is a lot of variation in food portion size & calorie recommendations. Personally, I only got to around a cup of food at 6 months when I reached goal. Those first 3 months I was only eating 1/4 to 1/3 solid food so my calorie intake was lower than others. Are you on any prescribed medications? Some can slow or affect your weight loss rate too. I can track my biggest weight gains to changes in my hormones - puberty & menopause were the biggest - so there could be something in what you said about the article. (Could you include a link to the article please as I couldn’t find it in their site - looking in the wrong place most likely 😉.) I noticed that Sage offer a resting metabolic rate assessment. Did you do one before surgery? If so it may be interesting to see if there has or hasn’t been a change.

I've Booked The Date !

I will start with a little, tiny bit of information about myself. My name is Allyssa, I am a 20 year old girl from Alberta, Canada ! I operate heavy equipment as my occupation for now in the beautiful oilsands (haha). I like to longboard, party and do pretty much any typical thing any 20 year old nonsense a 20 year old gets into. I first began my struggle with weight at the young age of 8 years old, being an asthmatic I was put on hardcore steroids very young that caused a whopping 30 pound weight gain in just a short month and a half. With such a dramatic change, so quickly, I turned to food to cope. By time I was 13 I weighed 150 pounds. By 17, 220 pounds. Hard to believe, hard to imagine, even harder to deal with. I was bounced from Jenny Craig, to Herbal Magic, to stress filled, painful no food diets, and intense workout. In my opinion Herbal Magic was the only diet that worked. I went from 220 to a small 160! It was a fantastic loss, and I was doing so well, when I stuck to my program. With being such a young age, it was hard to stay away from alcohol, and occasionally eating what I wanted. This past January I unfortunately lost a very important figure in my life, which caused me to plummet to the very low that made me re-gain most of my weight. In just a month, I had reached 180 pounds. So February I had decided I want the gastric sleeve, so I hit the internet in search of a doctor I came to a conclusion that Mexico was where I would have my surgery. My surgeons name is Dr. Roldolfo Natera. And my surgery is Hosptial Star Medica. Finally booked for June 1/2012. I am a little nervous as I assume anyone would be. I am looking for support, advice, and knowledge from anyone who has also , decided to have surgery in Mexico, I would like to know all about your experience, dealing with the hospital stay, healing time, diets etc. Thank you so much.
14. I've had same problems. Always having band deflated and refilled until major problems occurred. Could not swallow , massive gerd, reflux. Regurgitation to name a few Band has been deflated for six months and experienced 35 lb weight gain. Revising to RNY.
15. Oh he would definitely know I'm getting my thighs done but I'd rather tell him that it was one of the things that the doc noticed and said he could fix. Although, today I saw my sister in laws thighs up close and I feel much better with my own now. Hers look like mine and she's a normal weight. Hers was just from pregnancy weight gain.
16. Hi! It's been almost 1 year out (sleeved Dec 6th 2011) and I think I'm just gaining weight back. My lowest was 205 in the summer but now I weigh 235!! I had a rough summer with getting laid off so gained back some weight because of it and could not afford my vitamins. I got a new job now so am trying to lose weight again and taking the vitamins. My hair is falling out so is now very thin. I'm used to having a thick head of hair. Right now I put myself on a liquid diet for awhile so I can lose the 30 lbs and get back on track. I feel I should have lost way more by now so feel like a failure. My weight before surgery was 300+ and highest I been was 400. I'm still glad that I had the sleeve because there is no way I could have lost 70 lbs on my own. Does anyone have any advice on how I can get back on track?
17. Moon, sorry to hear about your troubles. The one thing that I have heard is that if you are not getting enough protein then one of the side effects is hair loss. The other is weight gain. If you are not eating enough protein, then you must be eating too many carbs which leads to the weight gain. The pre-op diet with very high protein and very low carbs along with getting plenty of exercise should kick everything back in. Get back on your vitamins too, the B12, calcium and iron are very important. The B12 does help in the weight loss. Don't forget the 64oz of liquids a day. Good Luck and keep us posted.
18. Hey all, I've been lurking a little bit, just trying to educate myself on the surgery. If it says anything about me, I'm not too worried about most of the side effects except hair loss...LOL! I haven't chosen a surgeon but plan on flying into San Diego. I've been talking to Janese at A Lighter You and thankfully she's not high pressure. She suggested I schedule in April or May while the doctors were running specials, but I have two large conventions to attend in May and can't see myself sipping protien drink at the banquets. LOL! I'm roughly 100 pounds over, and have been on WW many times, Medi fast, Spark People...I'm sure there's other plans. Initially I lose a little and stop. I think that's because I can't really exercise hard...given my weight my feet are breaking down and I have back issues. Its only been this last 10 pounds gained that my BP has begun to rise so that has me worried. I'm a writer so my day job is very sedentry. My weight gain started about 20 years ago following an accident and has just been such a burden. Any wisdom and advice would be appreciated, and if you have a doctor you just love, let me know. I'm looking at scheduling in June. Belinda
19. my insurance requires 4 months with a nutrtionist/dietitian. I am on month 4 now. However my nutrtionist calls me for a monthly weigh in. I guess she allows it for people with busy schedules. I'm a nurse. I'm always busy. My problem is that I gained back my weight. I was 338 at my weigh in and got down to 334 then my mood stablizers meds were up a few milligrams and I now I weigh 246. Should I tell her I'm still 234 and keep trying to lose the weight until I am seen again or should I be honest and tell her about my weight gain? Anyone else have issues like this and still get approved for surgery? Thank you for any advice. Also I am only required to lose one poubd during my weigh ins. I probably physically won't see them for a month or two. I could get back down to 234.

Everyone: what I have learned

I've always had a pretty good knowledge of what to eat health wise. I could do well for weeks and months at a time with my well rounded healthy meals, but because of my body and some health issues one bad meal would cause MAJOR weight gain for me. I have never believed in getting your band so tight you can't swallow your own spit lol. If I can't fit in 1200 healthy calories each day I would get some fluid taken out. I do know a lot of people who only eat 700-800 calories a day and it really is not enough to realistically be healthy. You're body needs nutrients to survive and THRIVE. I use my band to keep me from being hungry between meals so it's easier to stick with the plan. It also keeps me from being as bad as I want on days where my will power is not so strong and when I do have a treat day with something not so healthy I don't pay the price I used to. It's funny now a "bad day" is eating 1500-1800 calories lol. Not that it's a lot but probably once a week I treat myself with higher fatty foods. I know before a bad day would be SO MUCH more than that.
It's great that you've found something that works for you. Good job and keep at it!

21. I am about 10 months post op and have lost about 60 lbs, which includes some weight gained back. I am starting back to the gym which got derailed due to a big out of state move, new jobs, etc. I need to get back on track as I can tell a difference in energy level and don't want my health to start suffering again. Did anyone have this happen to them? What did you do to get back on track? Any advice would be appreciated! Please no lectures... I'm human, after all.

The past 6 to 8 months I've not like posting my weight on my anniversary, as you can see, it has stayed in the same range. Today makes 17 months since my banding. I am still struggling to get my fill just right. I thought my 10th fill would be the perfect amount, but I still believe I need a tad more. I still can eat anything, bread, steak etc. some days are tighter than others, but I find that it is only about 1 week out of the month that I have perfect restriction - and that is during my monthly. sometimes when I ovulate I am tighter, but again, that is just a few days out of the month. I will be going for fill #11 next week, right before my cruise. I know some might think I'm crazy, but I'm sick of not losing so I don't care if I am tight on the cruise. I don't want to gain on the cruise, I actually would like to lose a few pounds while on the cruise - this will be a first if that happens. The average weight gain for a cruise is 10 pounds and I've always gained weight while on a cruise. Always, at least 5 lbs, last year, I think I only gained around 3 or 4, I can't remember. Well, it hurts, but I have to be honest with myself - so here is my weight history since banding......month by month. I am still determined to finish this race by my 2 year anniversary! I want to lose and hit my goal, I will lose and hit my goal! I will not give up and I will not quit until I reach my goal! Highest weight - 248 1 mo post op - 206.8 2 mo post op - 198 3 mo post op - 193 4 mo post op - 184.2 5 mo post op - 178 6 mo post op – 174 7 mo post op - 178 - went on vacation and ate big (7 day cruise) 8 mo post op - 174 9 mo post op - 170 10 mo post op- 167 11 mo post op - 170 - haven’t even been trying 12 mo post op - 174 - again, not trying. But finally refocused - exactly where I was at 6 mos post op – so basically no weight loss in the past 6 mos 13 mo post op - 183 - Ouch! started taking steroids and made my weight go up, along with not eating right and no exercise! 14 mo post op - 185 - grrrrr 15 mo post op - 180 - weight is finally going down, but inches are actually coming off faster since I've been exercising a lot. 16 mo post op - 178 17 mo post op - 175
23. I was off a full week after surgery. I recoup pretty well, but I don't think I could have gone back to work as quick as you did. I was feeling pretty good at home 5 days post op. You should start to notice a difference within a few days. Just take things as easy as you can. When you go to the doctor tomorrow. Be sure to ask what to eat. I'm sure they will tell you, but just incase they don't, ask. I was able to move to full liquids at your stage. Most doctors give the first fill around 6 weeks post op. I didn't gain weight during this time, but I didn't lose much either. If you haven't started logging your food on one of the online sites (fitday, dailyplate, sparkpeople and I'm sure there are more) this is a good time to start. You will get hungry soon (I was hungry from the time I walked in the door from surgery) but if you record and make good selections, you should be able to maintain or at least keep the weight gain to a minimum. I hope you're feeling better soon.
24. Ok, so I have been wanting to go on the pill for like forever now, lol, but have just kept putting it off. Hubby and I are using another form of birth control but I want to go back on the pill to regulate my period again. My period has been irregular for 20 years. I was on the pill before two different time, but never really stayed on it long enough to finally get regular. This time I would really like to, but I know it can cause weight gain. Is that something I need to be worried about? I wanted to go on the pill a few months ago, but figured with upcoming surgery and the risk of blod clots after surgery and the fact that the pill makes you more suseptable, I figured I would hold off. I know it probably seems silly, but if I am getting a surgery to help me loose weight, the last thing I want to do is to slow it down! Anyone have any insight or ideas? Should I wait till I loose my weight? Will it even matter? Thanks everyone!
25. Well, I have offially made the choice to get sleeved. I finally topped out at 222lbs and this is by far the heaviest I've ever been or plan on being. I was always able to maintain weight at 120lbs until I had my son 22 years ago. I yo-yo'd between 160-173 lbs for quite a few years. Truthfully, the weight gain from 173 to 222 was so gradual that I became adjusted to it....until....the knees started clicking, the back started hurting to the point of not being able to sit straight up for several minutes at a time, and walking 2 flights of stairs made me winded. After trying the gym, diet drops, diet pills, diets and every combination of those, I knew I needed a new tool. I originally wanted the lap-band, but the idea of erosion and corrosion and any other "sion" steered me to the sleeve. I go for my 1st consultation on 1-10-13 and we'll see what happens from there. I'm hoping that I have enough documentation from the other programs to get right to the meat of this journey. I am ready to do this!
