April 2022 Surgery Buddies
Donna Suz replied to Crinkles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I spent a lot of time today looking for the vitamins I will be taking after the surgery. I was reading the packet I got from my surgeon and there was a lot of details I needed to go over to make those decisions. I had started a vitamin regimen based on some YouTube videos I watched, but after getting into the nitty gritty of it I realized I was going to need much higher dosages than what was recommended. It took me some time to balance out what I needed for the amount of money it will cost me every month. As I was doing this it made me feel much better about the care I am going to give myself after the surgery which greatly reduced any anxieties I was having. I’ve got about 3 weeks to go (My surgery is April 4th) and I’m planning on concentrating on preparing for my post-op needs. -
After years of consideration I am going to gave gastric bypass surgery. I have a great doctor and will discuss this with her in a few weeks. I have very good insurance and the freedom to choose from a wide variety of surgeons. I am grateful. Is anyone from the San Diego area who can give a recommendation on a bariatric surgeon? I know my doctor will have info but I’d really love to hear from GP patients as well. Thanks

Can you take CBD products before surgery (no vaping)
joelynnpamplin replied to Cherylmilla's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My classmate had his hernia on his navel operated on. And he then refrained from using CBD oil two weeks before the operation. He wasn't sure that the use of cannabis was prohibited before the operation in which he'd be given general anesthesia. He just stopped using it just in case it didn't cause any complications. Best Oklahoma dispensaries where he buys CBD oil supplies products to many people. I think good pharmacists are working in this company. So you can ask them a question on the hotline if you're very interested or worried about it! Good luck. I hope everything will be fine. -
Can you post what your food intake looks like over the course of the day? Dec, Jan, Feb surgeries
ShoppGirl replied to idk4w's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a year out so I eat more at a time than I did when I was three months out but I eat on the same schedule. I eat breakfast at 9, lunch at 12, snack at 3, dinner at 6 And snack at 9. That way I am eating every three hours. And yes i do feel hungry in between but usually I am able to wait the hour and a half or whatever since I know what time I will be eating next. -

I’m 6 weeks from surgery and the wait is killing me! I decided to start lifting weights 🏋️♀️ so that I can start the healthy lifestyle process now. -
Hi all. I'm scheduled for VGS early May and have an overseas trip planned for end of July (11 weeks later). I'm concerned about my energy level, etc. Anyone care to share your 3 month post op travel experiences? Thanks in advance

Food Before and After Photos
idk4w replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Wow. these pics and the info I'm learning about others' eating habits are quite educational, but this is also so frustrating for me!!! Everyone talks about how full they get... why don't I get full?????? Why can I eat a normal portion and no one else can? Isn't my stomach supposed to be miniscule??? You'd think I was this mega eater and weighed in at 500 lbs prior, but totally not. I was 220 before my pre-op diet, 210 at surgery (sleeve), and 200 a week later. and... drumroll... that's where I remain, 5 weeks later. I'm trying to be very careful with what I eat and I purposely give myself smaller portions, but even if I'm eating lean meats (chicken, tuna) and vegetables, I'm not getting full after 5 bites like every one else. I can't understand it. I should not be able to hold more than a 1/2 cup of food, right? It's a mystery to me (a REALLY frustrating one!). -

Oh wow. I hate that you went thru that. I'm glad I'm choosing to take off 2 weeks instead of just one. -
I am 6 weeks post surgery and have struggled as well. Eating period has been difficult for me and I figured it was a result of my hiatal hernia repair. I am not able to eat much at all and have had a hard time with transitioning through the stages. I have not been able to successfully handle anything aside from yogurt, jello, soup, pudding or applesauce. People have suggested maybe it is dairy, maybe I am eating foods with too much acidity, eating too fast, etc. But Caloric intake was never discussed. I believe as long as you are getting your Protein and Liquid intake, you should be fine. Kay_G_B

Hi , I am 7 weeks post surgery . The surgeon found I had a hiatus hernia which he fixed along with tightening the muscle . One day after surgery I got oesophageal spasms which was extremely painful so they knocked me out by a drip for 4 days until they got it under control. My sleeve seems to be successful but am often still have feelings of faintness , and tiredness. also am wondering if someone can share what and how much they eat during the day . I think I am only getting 400 to 500 calories . I am also suffering from head hunger at night and am nibbling at cashews to try and satisfy it . The weight loss has been good and to have loss this much weight without the sleeve would have been torture and been less than half the weight loss . I don’t regret doing this but sometimes feel it is quite hard .

My experience… sleeved on 1/22/22
jaymecaye replied to jaymecaye's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey all- sorry I have been MIA. I’m not gonna lie- I went to a dark place. This thread seemed to change from me well us sharing our experiences post sleeve to people complaining about the financial side or honesty telling me I was wrong and other pointed comments in my inbox. So I took a break. But there were quite a few of you who are so supportive and I’m sorry I ghosted. Here’s my update I’m almost two months (roughly a week shy of 2 months) out and down a total of 36 pounds. I go to the gym 3-5 times a week and do quite a bit of weight lifting and cardio. I feel so much better. I’m down two pant sizes which is fantastic. Lately I’ve been having odd soreness in my lower back and shoulders so I contacted my nurse- she thought it was that my body was still holding it’s self like I had those 36 pounds still. She recommended I get a massage- hey doctors orders I’m not gonna say no to a little pampering. But honestly it worked. No longer am I sore in odd places. I hope you all are doing well on your journey and remember every body is different with the loss. Listen to yours and your care team. -
Okay I just tried it for lunch based on your recommendation and I agree. I usually don’t even like vinigarette dressings but I loved it and of course the little candied pecans are delicious too. I am interested to know how they figure it has 39 grams of protein though cause it didn’t seem like alot of chicken. I know nuts have protein too but still. I question that it was that much protein. I think I may take it home and weigh it next time out of curiosity. Maybe it’s cause it’s cut in cubes instead of strips it just doesn’t look like as much?? Or maybe because I ordered it without blue cheese and they made it in a hurry they put less chicken on? Ooh well either way it’s very good and only 10 minutes away from me so I’m sure I will be back. I’m thinking Parmesan Cesar next time. 👍. i just checked Walmart and Publix online and they don’t carry the dressing, Amazon does but you have to get three bottles. Idk why they do that.

new here and have a few questions
xxaprilrose posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery last thurs (mar 3) and today I started "week 2" of the diet my doctor gave me. This consists of all the liquids of week 1 plus low sugar oatmeal, yogurt, applesauce and mashed potatoes. I just have a few questions: 1. What does everyone experience when they say "i cant do (insert food here)".. how do you know when you cant tolerate a food? I ask because a few people I talked to always just say "i felt like i was dying" and that TERRIFIED me so now im so nervous to even eat a darn thing. 2. my sheet says to do 3 meals a day but I can add a snack. How long between meals and when do I do the snack? 3. Why am I so hungry and is there anything I can do to curb my appetite? I want to eat more mashed potatoes but I am only allowed 2 tsp a meal which is so small lol thanks in advance everyone! -

Good luck, you can do this! My liquid diet starts on the 21st. I’ve been trying to ease my way into it. Making small changes and reducing my calorie intake each week before it starts. That way it’s not such a shock to my system. I wouldn’t want to do the actual diet for more than 2 weeks though. That is going to be so hard in itself. Looking forward to hearing how you do. My surgery is just a few days after yours. -
Hey! I'm gearing up for my soft food stage next week and thinking about protein sources. I get most of my protein through shakes right now in pureed stage but I also eat eggs and beans. I've been a vegetarian for 7 years now and don't plan on eating meat again. Has anyone tried these foods on soft? -Steamed tofu (not crispy or hard) -vegetarian deli meat slices -vegetarian ground beef, finely chopped up And can you think of anything else that might be okay on soft food? Bypass revision after sleeve? 8 years post op Sleeve
shriner37 replied to Tink22-sleeve's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was sleeved in 2015 and just went through the revision from sleeve to bypass about 3 1/2 weeks ago. So as I'm still in recovery mode I can't really provide a full answer all of your questions. 1. Reason for conversion: I developed a hiatal hernia where part of the sleeve had slipped up through the opening of the diaphragm into the chest cavity, which was causing chest discomfort and only allowing me to eat a couple ounces of food at a meal. After doing an EGD my surgeon was concerned enough to schedule my revision within a week. He said if they just fixed the hernia there was a high likelihood it would recur with the sleeve. If he converted to bypass he said there was a very low likelihood I'd have any further problems. I also had GERD issues from the sleeve which I wanted to address. 2. Post-op period: I'd say for me it was essentially the same. I had the same surgeon and facility which were both great. Recovery plan is the same for both surgeries (clear liquid, full liquid, puree, soft solids, etc.) I had a bit more pain with the bypass but I'm 7 years older than when I had the sleeve. 3. Best and worst part: Can't really answer this yet, except to say it's nice to lose some additional weight (I never hit my goal with the sleeve) but it's tough to have to start over with the recovery. 4. Dumping: Haven't experienced it yet, but I am just up to about 2 to 2.5 oz of soft protein so I have not been able to even try anything that might cause dumping. My thought on the revision is if you are experiencing significant GERD it is definitely worth considering. GERD can cause Barret's esophagus and ultimately lead to esophageal cancer if not kept in check. Having had a relative who died of that cancer in her early 50's I was concerned enough to want to solve it if I could. -

It's still falling more than I would consider normal BUT I have lots of new growth. I don't think it something you can avoid if your hair is going to thin out it will. Everyone is different in how their body reacts to surgery I had a really rough time mentally and I guess physically as I just didn't have to strength or motivation to do anything I ended up having 9 weeks off work. So I had a deep seated regret after the surgery which lasted about 4 months but I am ok now 8 months out. -
Wonderful progress! How much did you lose in 3 months before surgery? Losses in excess of 4lb per week won't be just fat loss and "stalls" while eating below replacement calories are stalls of weight and not fat loss. Scales are evil. Just my 2c.

Sleeve revisions
Tufflaw replied to Chelsea0604's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I did sleeve to bypass revision. Same number of incisions, except they had to put a drain in for a week after the bypass. Same level of pain/uncomfortable, which was not a lot in my case. I only took the painkillers for two days and stopped because I didn't need them. I think I felt worse immediately after surgery when I had the bypass, but that may be because I was out for a longer period of time so I was more groggy. That was just in the hospital though, it felt about the same when I got home. -

The hair loss generally lasts about three months. This is the same for the people who didn’t take supplements like biotin & those who did. The hair you’ll lose is already dead & would have been shed anyway. The stress of the surgery & weight loss accelerate your natural hair loss cycle but your natural hair regrowth remains unchanged. So while you’re losing hair, you’re still growing new hair. It is only the new hair that may benefit from any supplements. During the first month you often feel weak, have low energy, experience some brain fog & shorter concentration spans. But we are all different in our recovery. A friend was back at work after a week no issue. Another took three weeks. Me, I still struggled after 4 weeks but my BP was very low (but that is my normal). -
A little late in the game but I agree with everything mentioned above. Three week stall, watwr weight, etc. as long as you are sticking to your plan it will break.

It happens more than you know. My mom had a heart attack and didn’t realize it till a week later when they asked her about any pains and she said yes she had them but they weren’t terribly bad and they went away so she didn’t think too much of it. I agree it would be freaky though. Especially if it was so long ago that you don’t even remember when it could have been.

So i posted on here that last week i did my EKG and it came back abnormal and they schedualed me for a nuclear stress test. So they billed my insurance and the diagnosis code is OLD MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION. Googled that and thats basically a heart attack... I possibly had a heart attack in the past and not know about it... Never came up during my visit yesterday with the cardiologist. Thats freaky if thats true.
