    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hey y’all! Boy have I had a roller coaster! I had VSG on Tuesday 2/22/22 and it has been a medical roller coaster. I started with a great CBC before surgery and it quickly went downhill. Tuesday night my HR was 122 resting so I had to have a Bolus of saline. That corrected but I was still bleeding internally. I lost more and more blood Wednesday-Thursday and my BP dipped to 74/52 at one point. I felt lightheaded and faint and couldn’t get out of bed. Doc told me the internal bleeding was pretty normal for this procedure. Things turned around on Thursday and my anemia started to correct itself so the doc sent me home. The remaining effects will last weeks the doc says. My only real problem now is I am extremely hungry. I’ve read it could be acid but I’m on Protonix once a day. Anyone has experience with post-op hunger? Anything help it?

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I did, too. Five more days for me. I'm about to jump out of my skin, I'm so excited. Hard to believe that a week from today I'll be home from the hospital.
  3. I am 2 weeks out and worried that im going to regret it. I think about food more than i ever have and im still in a lot of pain around one of the incision sites. It burns every time i change position or cough and i cannot use my core muscles without pain. I'm also freezing all the time. Im down 14 lbs so far, although it doesnt feel like ive lost anyhing and its starting to slow down. But i know there will be starts and fits with regard to the pounds coming off. I dont regret it yet but ive gotten close. Maybe once ive lost more weight (and actually feel like it) and i fit into jeans that i havent been able to wear in years ill feel more positive about things. But i dont regret it yet. point is that you wont really know until you do it. I keep thinking of the positives and the reasons im doing this- to be healthier able to more fully participate in my life. maybe ill regret it if i dont achieve my goals or maybe ill realize that im still healthier even if i still weigh more than i want and cant eat all the things i could before. I wont know or be able to say, if i regret it until im farther away from surgery and back to somewhat of a normal life. in looking at why others regret surgery or not, you have to consider why they regret it. Is the regret due to a temporary complication or long term failure to achieve goals, or something else. i had the support of my family but not of my best friend, however i had to make the decision for myself, just like you. Regardless of what you decide, you have my support. And all the people here.

    Feeling cold

Ive been cold since surgery too. Even when i spiked a fever post op. I cant seem to warm up. Of course its winter for me and theres usually a few weeks at its coldest point that i just cant seem to stay warm, but this is ridiculous, i am going to end up with a huge water bill from sitting in a warm bath or a giant electric bill from turning the heat up to 80! im hoping that by shivering im increasing my calories burned. That would be the only upside of shivering like this all the time.

    Would I qualify?

This is exactly what I have done in the past, lose weight then gain it back plus more, although I've never gone past my highest weight. One of the reasons I'm keen to get started with a surgery journey is because I've gained back so much in such a short space of time that I'm worried that I'll keep getting bigger at this rate and before I know it I'll be further from healthy than I've ever been. I have now booked in to talk to a doctor next week, which is something I've been delaying in the hopes I can lose the weight without help, plus I hadn't realised that I had slipped beyond a BMI of 30 (although now I know for sure, it is incredibly obvious that I am at an unhealthy size/shape, I even used to have loose skin that is now full again, I do not understand how I've been in this denial so badly, I feel like an absolute idiot!). I just want to be a healthy weight without using disordered techniques!! Suzannethemom - I was concerned that that would be the case. I do suffer from idiopathic intracranial hypertension when I am at an unhealthy weight level, plus my home blood pressure readings have been high recently, I've just not seen the doctor about it as of yet. With the remeasuring of my height (I haven't been measured in about 20 years!) it does put my at a BMI of 36 so I'm hoping that they'll agree I am a suitable candidate. Thank you all! Your help is greatly appreciated.

    Long term success

Thanks. At this point im not sure what to expect. I've have a friend and client that just had their sleeve surgery. They have given me some info. I'm sure it's different for everyone. I go to my first dr appointment in a couple of weeks. I'm getting a little well a lot nervous about starting the process.

    Gastric Bypass

Hi Everyone, surgery coming up 3/7/22. I’m excited but a little scared. Will be starting 2nd week PreOp Diet of all liquids. Any advice? Please keep me in your prayers and best wishes to everyone, wherever you are on your Bariatric Journey!!! :) God Bless!
  9. Ltdanfan I tried the French fries and they sat like a rock in my belly for a week. Three French fries were so painful I avoid them like the plague!

    Emotions on high post op?

yes - there are a lot of hormonal things that go on the first few weeks after surgery. A lot of women complain about screwed up menstrual cycles as well as moodiness. It has to do with estrogen being stored in fat cells - it's released during rapid weight loss. It'll all level out eventually and things will go back to normal. Just hang in there...

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi! April 19 vsg here! Very nervous about the 2 week pre op diet and managing that while returning to work after 2 years working at home. Wondering how long most of you are taking off from work after your procedure?
  12. I thought the same but it is much easier than I thought. I think you do have to allow yourself to have what you crave every now and then other wise you will drive yourself crazy and binge. For example I allow myself a coke and chocolate every other day (small portions) and last week I wanted it everyday but this week I have have only fleeting thoughts about consuming those foods/drinks and not had any. once you get into the habit of making better choices it gets easier.
  13. I wish i could break up with food. I'm almost 2 weeks post RYGBP and i find myself having cravings that ive never had before. Im craving all kinds of unhealthy food like french fries, fast food, pasta, candy, etc. i did not have these cravings pre op and it was always fairly easy to avoid these types of pitfalls. Im not saying i ate perfectly pre op but portion control was my biggest downfall, not necessarily what was being consumed. i haven't lost my taste for anything apparently. I haven't given in and tried all things i want because im still so soon post op but i hope this stops quickly because its really hard to have a protein shake when all i want are french fries. Anybody know of french fry flavored protein shakes? Lol how long did it take for people's taste to change?

    January sleevers

I'm 5 weeks out as of yesterday and I have protein shakes in the morning and afternoon (Fairlife also), then a Light & Fit yogurt for snack mid morning (80 cal, 12g protein). For lunch and dinner, I've eaten a variety of things... Started with flaky types of fish and over the last week have tried different kinds of meat. I successfully ate pulled pork, shredded chicken, and 2 tiny beef meatballs. I added sugar-free BBQ sauce if it seemed like it might be too dry. I ate some canned green beans and zucchini. I eat unsweetened apple sauce every once in awhile. Today for lunch, I had 2 oz of turkey deli meat, a slice of fresh mozzarella cheese, and 5 cheez it crackers (chewed well). Tonight I plan to have some kind of seafood with peas and carrots. My husband grilled some chicken last night and it was tougher than what I had been eating and I didn't enjoy having to chew each bite a gazillion times to make it soft. So I'm sticking with the softer meats for a bit. I haven't had any issues or tummy trouble at all thank goodness! I am going to stay away from any raw vegetables like lettuce for awhile as I heard those can be harder to digest?

    Emotions on high post op?

Hey! I'm 2 weeks post op and I def feel this. I think there's a big hormonal change, like I didn't get my period this month either. I am in and out of a weird daze/depression and I miss feeling normal. I think it'll go away as we heal and our routines become more normal but I definitely feel like my emotions are off. I'm not even particularly happy. I've lost like 19 lbs post op and don't really care because I dont feel physically good. But, I just need to keep telling myself that this is a temporary state. At some point,, I believe it becomes normal again. What type of feelings/emotions are you experiencing? Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  16. So I’m almost 5 weeks post op, I’m down 41lbs including my 2 week pre-op. I have moved to soft foods stage 4 in my plan. Egg salad, scrambled eggs, cheese sticks, chili, still eating soups and I have now added fluke, and cod to the menu. I’m able to take in about 3-4oz of the fish, 2 scrambled eggs, a cup of soup(doesn’t matter which type, also not eating chix if chix soup and so on) I drink a protein shake almost every day(fair life 150 cal 30g protein) and I’m now back at the gym treadmill 30-40 min both incline and non inclined and I started with the weights(not heavy) I feel my stomach is probably healed at this point as my acid reflux has gone away since eating some real food. I do take an acid reducer in the morning as prescribed by my Dr. Also getting in my b12, multi and calcium vitamins almost regularly. Is anyone else eating anything else?? When can I eat a salad? I do get about 64 oz of water and tea how is everyone else doing???
  17. Hello everyone! I am a 32 year old woman currently about 3 weeks post op and honestly, I am just really emotional. I feel as if there is a lot of feelings surfacing since the surgery. Anybody else feel the same way?

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

So, we're in about the same boat. I'm down 83lbs in 3 months and 10 days. Still going in the right direction, even if slowing down. Hitting between 6500 and 9000 steps per day at this point ... that about an hour of walking daily after work. Mixing in band exercises while at the office and while walking. The diet is still fairly clean, especially during the work week.... though I did allow myself a piece of toast today. Only lost 1.8 lbs this week, but a loss is a loss. I had ...probably an unrealistic goal, to reach -100 by my March 17 doctor appointment. Looking like it will be closer to -90. Which of course is still fantastic! Wearing clothes that I haven't been able to wear in a while. Need to break down and buy a couple pairs of salvation army pants soon... as it is I have to wear shorts under my pants to keep them up! Lol. I'm thinking about starting some weight training soon. I know there are different camps on this idea but I want to counter some of the loose skin by building some tone. I'll likely see the scale slow even further but I need to realize that the redistribution of weight is there. Looking forward to the next -17!
  19. I understand your struggle I am 3 weeks post op I tried to take Bariatric Fushion chewables they were the worst things ever. I also decided at that point just to stick to pills so I ordered Bariatric Fushion multivitamin 1 a day. I will just have to add a calcium chew along with it. It has been hard for me to drink protein shakes I believe it is a mental thing. I tried last week and it came right back up. I will try again in a couple of days. I didn’t like premier either you should try fairlife they are not thick like protein shakes and don’t have that nasty after taste.

    Fruits

I wasn't allowed to eat fruit that had skins or seeds for the first few weeks (strawberries definitely have seeds) - but like others have said, check with your plan. Plans can vary...

    After Surgery

Congrats on getting your surgery date. Whoo hoo! What people eat at each phase depends on the plan their surgeon & dietician put them on. Most seem to be on purées for weeks 3 & 4. Think baby food, thick gloopy liquids. You can purée most proteins with gravy, broth, stock, milk, etc. to get the solid food liquidy enough. But you may find your tummy is a bit fussy & your tastebuds can be sensitive making things taste pretty awful so it can be a bit hit & miss but it passes. I blended up tinned salmon & tuna but it was disgusting. Eggs were good - scrambled, poached, or mashed boiled with Mayo. I also made slow cooked soups with meat & vegetables & blended well. I could have yoghurt which I ate every day & instant rolled oats made extra milky. But don’t worry if you struggle moving to the next food phase. Some need a couple extra days on the previous stage. We all heal & recover differently. Have a chat with your surgeon about what to expect post surgery & what you should be aware of or watch for with your surgery. Generally generally you can expect gas pain (they inflate your abdomen during surgery so they can see the operating field). It distends your tummy & stretches muscles & then has to escape your body - walking a little often helps as does Gas X - but it could take up to a week to dissipate. Surgical pain is generally managed with meds & many find by day 4 it’s greatly diminished to just general discomfort. Remember no NSAIDS. You may be swollen & have difficulty swallowing fir a couple of days. You may have diarrhoea &/or constipation. You won’t be able to lift anything over 10lbs +/- for a couple of weeks. You may not be hungry or interested in eating. You may be nauseous again meds help so ask for some if you need them. Sip slowly & sip often - stay hydrated. Take it easy & listen to your body. If it says rest, rest. Try some electrolyte drinks to give you a boost of energy if you feel you need it. Don’t be afraid to contact your medical team if you don’t feel well, pain persist or isn’t managed by your prescribed pain meds. It all gets way easier as you progress. All the best.
