    NSV (Non Scale Victories)

My latest NSV was last night when I had to squeeze between two other people's chairs in a resturant and realized that there was room to spare!

    Never thought I'd see a NSV...BUT>>>

Congratulations on your NSV and many more to come. My boyfriend told me I felt different too.
  3. I posted this earlier attched to the original thread, but since its one of my first "goals" I set for myself it definately needs to be here under NSV's... It feels like a lifetime ago that I made the below post too. I cried this morning because today, I tried the vest on and it fit! I couldn't wait to show her! I feel amazing. Posted May 8, 2011 - 7:45 PM Let me start by saying that a friend of mine has this vest she wears that I LOVE! I keep telling her she needs to give it to me. Doesnt matter tht she is a size 6/8 an I am a size 18/20 on top, I still want it lol. Of course she always tells me no you cant have it! Well today we had a shopping date, and it was the first time seeing her since my surgery on the 27th. She hands me a bag and tells me to look... inside is a brand new vest size 10. She said she knows that eventually I will fit into it but left the receipt and tags just in case I want to get a smaller size. I love her! She was not a huge supporter of the surgery in the begining because she was afraid for me. Now, I don't think there is a bigger show of support that she could have shown me. Just thought I would share. Raine

    NSV Photo Thread

Hooray for NSV's!!! This is not nearly as cool as the bull riding and the cleavage (although I think I still have a pretty good rack until I lose more weight!). This is a picture of my daughter and I after I sang for four packed concerts at a large church here in the Twin Cities. I've been singing with a band for a dozen years, but this was the first time I was hired as a professional to take a lead role on my own. I sang the part of the Angel Gabriel in the Musical "Child of the Promise". (thus the glitter and flashy sash!). Thanks to my band...THEY HAD TO TAKE IN MY COSTUME, it was too big. WAHOO!!! Keep up the good work, y'all! Jon

    NSV Photo Thread

Dee, you are braver than me... I have a tattoo, but it seems like it would hurt like crazy to get your tongue or noise pierced. My dear freaky hubby wants me to get my clit pierced and I am WAY too chicken for that. That would be an interesting NSV photo!!!
  6. Absolutely! Celebrate your NSV's wherever you find them. Hooray for your knuckles!

    Scared

It's definitely a lot easier to find reasons not to do something. You have to make the decision based on what you want for you and your life. Most of what you see on the negative side are things that pass with time. Sure there are a small percentage of people that have complications and some can be serious, but those are risks with any surgery and if you look at the research, the percentage of complications with gastric sleeve surgeries is less than with other WLS surgeries, and even less than most other elective surgeries as a whole. People tend to talk more about negative experiences because they are looking for answers or encouragement. When people are feeling good, there's typically no reason to ask questions or post because those people aren't really looking for information. Take a look in some of the "NSV" (non-scale victory) threads and see the amazing things being experienced. I have had nothing but good experiences so far...closing in on 100 lbs lost less than 4 months post-op, having to buy new clothes because even the ones I couldn't fit into for years are now too big, being able to be more active with my kids, feeling confident about going out into public and actually being the one wanting to go out for a change, less aches and pains from walking/running/swimming/biking, sleeping better, and most of all, just being healthier and feeling better about myself. It was the best decision I've ever made and the only regrets I have are (1) that I ever let it get that far and (2) I didn't do this sooner. Anytime you're nervous or have questions, speak with your surgeon and team...they will help you understand the risks involved and can help you through the questions. Best of luck to you!
  9. For the last year, I've been hesitant to go out any dates for various reasons (clothes too tight, small movie seats etc). Well after 44lbs down since my surgery, I ventured out this evening on my first date in SO LONG and it felt SO GOOD!!! Nice movie and dinner and hallelujah the movie seat wasn't pressing on my hips at all! At dinner I slid into a narrow seat comfortably. When getting up and down both at the movie and the restaurant, I had NO joint pain. I was instead aching from my workouts this week. It just feels so good to go out without being apprehensive about fitting anywhere. Going to bed grinning from ear to ear and off to zumba in a couple of hours. Good nite my sleeve community!
  10. Warrior... no wonder you are still smiling... great NSV... this is what it is all about!!! =]

    Exercise, Exercise, Excercise...

Ok. I say this every time I fall off the exercise wagon - but seriously - why do I fight it? After arguing with myself and spending all of March in a couch-potato stupor, I finally dragged my butt to the gym last night. Aside from a few minutes of lung burn - to be expected after well over 30 days with no body movement - I was just fine. By the time I was done with 20 minutes on the elliptical and 15 minutes on the bike, I had a great sense of accomplishment and I felt physically good, too. To top it off, I get to watch TV that I secretly enjoy - like American Idol or Are You As Smart as a Fifth Grader... Stuff I never watch at home. So, why the heck to I fight going? It seems like I have to force myself. I only succeeded in getting myself to go last night because I did yard work on Sunday - and my thighs were STILL SORE from bending over on Wednesday. That's just sad.... so I figured I would try to offset the back-of-thigh sore/tightness with top-of-thigh work. I ran that bike at level 10... until my knee started screaming and then I backed down to level 7. The point is, that 1) I don't mind doing the exercise while I am doing it. 2) I get a great feeling of having done a good thing for myself and my health. 3) I don't feel badly after am done... So WHY, by all that is holy, do I resist this wonderful miraculous activity from which so many good things come? This is a mystery that I am going to have to continue to ponder. Maybe while I am on the elliptical machine tonight... :clap2: I mean, the scale is still creeping downward. Today, my scale said 282 - if you add the 4 pounds to adjust to an approximation of my doc's scale - that puts me at 286. Eating less is wonderful - but exercise makes all the difference. I really want to WOW my doc when I see him again at the beginning of May...Plus, every pound I lose is pretty much a pound gone forever. So every pound I lose is one less I have to lose tomorrow.... May as well get as many of them out of the way as quickly as possible. Exercise is the way. On other life fronts - Sick DH is fully recovered and fully functioning again. He was even planning to foray out of the house to get groceries. Thank goodness! I was getting pretty tired of having to do all the home stuff in addition to working. The fridge parts have arrived and we have scheduled the visit for the repairman to put them in. Now all we have to do is empty & defrost the freezer - or go buy a back-up freezer. We have been talking about that for a while, anyway. I took a dry-run at the skills test for teachers. Reading - 90%. Writing - 95%. Math..... 64.5% *BUZZZZZZZ* Guess it's back to the Algebra books... I guess you just forget some stuff in 22 yrs. NSV de jour: I wore a shirt that my sister gave me yesterday. It was a 4x with no stretch, no a-line, no nothing. Now - size 4x doesn't sound like much of an NSV - but when you consider the size variations and the fact that prior to banding I was wearing the largest possible 5x made with stretchy knit - and they were getting a little clingy... a small 4x made of cotton - that is an accomplishment. I think I am going to have to go home and take my measurements....

NSV First Dinner out since the band!

Hey Molly!! Does't it feel good? It's the start of your "new" life - life where YOU are in control & it is so empowering. I love the feeling of leaving a restaurant knowing that I ate until I was comfortable & not stuffed. I feel healthy & alive instead of stuffed & wasted. Great NSV!! Keep up the great work.

    A bit of an update

That episode was great Becca. You have done remarkably well in such a small amount of time - I am so jealous of you. You look fantastic. I think it is important to reflect on our NSV's as a motivator. I can think of a few so I think I may start writing them down. They do 'lift me up' when I am blue so maybe I will put them on the fridge! I don't go in there too often for myself anymore... You have lifted my spirits today. Thanks

    5/26/09 Band Firsts

BG,I know what PBing is but I can't figure out is NSV!! I had my first fill last Fri. I feel no restriction, if anything I am eating more! I keep reading the blogs and they are reassuring to me that sometimes you don't feel restriction right away. I look forward to your first fill and to hear in your cleaver blog writings. Barbara

    Funny NSV..

@@bdejong LOL !!!!~ been their done that!!! its the "little" things in life that make you/me/all happy!! bless those little things!! I see many more funny/good/"interesting" NSV's in your future kathy congrats
  16. O.K., I would be the last person to be considered the head of the cheerleading squad, BUT we need to shout and yell about our victories.....we have been dwelling on scales which are not moving the right direction, slippage, erosion, feeling like failures, etc...... WE SHOULD BE PROUD OF OUR BANDSTER LIFESTYLE AND EMBRACE IT!!!! I know that scale victories rock, but I can bet that if you take just a couple minutes and count your non-scale victories it would make you SMILE. I will start my NSV list and you add on...... 1. Can sit in booth now 2. Can tie my shoes without wanting to puke 3. Can go up and down the stairs without having to take a rest 4. Can drive my car without being trapped behind the wheel 5. Not afraid to put on a seatbelt in someone else's car 6. I can lift things again 7. A regular bracelet fits my wrist 8. I don't schedule my life around food 9. My feet and legs are not swollen anymore 10. Can sit in a movie theater without pinching my butt in the sit. I could go on, but it's your turn now..... YOU RAH...BANDSTER'S RULE....YOU RAH!!!!
  17. Not sure where you got your expectations from, but if 5 pounds/week is disappointing then they were very unrealistic. At two weeks out I maybe lost about 3 pounds. (I don't know for sure because I only weighed at the doctors office the first 4 months) I do remember I was 17 pounds down at the 2 month mark. But that didn't stop me from hitting then passing my goal weight. Measure your success with NSVs, stick with your program, learn how to eat healthy, and STAY OFF THE SCALE. I promise you will be a hell of a lot happier.

    Waffle...not edible kind!

Yuck on the live band! I can only imagine how crazy that must be when trying to sleep! Glad you are doing so well on exercising (walking) and eating and good for you have nibbles of food - I think that's smart - then you don't crave it until you eat a ton of it lol........knee brace fitting looser is awesome -- it is definitely an NSV -- don't worry about the scale - I say - the inches sound like they are falling off of you woo hoo!
  19. I think it's time. This is just for starters. Please add or modify by cutting and pasting into a new post so we keep the list current: PB - Productive Burp: There are many versions to the PB, but it's basically when slime comes back up often followed by the food you just ate after the food refuses to go down. NSV- Non scale Victory: Something fabulous that happens as a result of weight loss that doesn't have anything to do with numbers, like getting flirted with or picking up something off the floor without falling over. 20. OMG, I love my band and my band loves me. My sister-inlaw bad the gastric bypass the same week as I had my band. She's lost 36 pounds in 6 weeks and I've lost 33 pounds in 6 weeks, not counting preop, just since surgery. I can do everything I could do before and more and she can't. I was 4 wheeler riding for 6 hours on my 10th day postop and she couldn't even think about it. This makes me feel very good about my decision. I've had two fills, 1.5 and .75, total 2.25 and the restriction feels great. I'm scheduled for another fill in 3 more weeks but it will have to be a little one and if I keep loosing at this rate he probably would prefer I wait. We'll see. Hope everyone is going to have a wonderful holiday weekend. We were headed to Tampa and then on down to the keys after that but we're postponing for 2 weeks to let the surf settle down. I am actually going to wear a bathing suit. We were cleaning out our garage tonight, we're building a new home and to sell this one I need a dump truck to get rid of all of this crap. Anyway, I found all of my old clothes. They seriously ranged in size from 7/8 10/12, no 16's, 18's, 20's and 22's. OMG, you can tell I'm a dieter. LOL Well, I went from 24's, 22's, and 20's fit but are loose so I can't wait to go to a reg. store to buy size 18's. It will truly be a NSV for me. Hope everyone has a safe and losing weekend. Love you all, Sherri

    weekly weigh-in

9-22-06 Well, my ticker has resumed moving towards the right. Yippee!! I also have an NSV for this week. I weighed myself this morning (always do on Fridays) and had to adjust my ticker. Then when I was getting dressed, I had this crazy idea. I went through my bag of "I'm too fat to wear these" clothes. I pulled out a pair of size 22 petite jeans and decided to try them on. I kept telling myself "they probably won't fit, I just want to see, it'll be okay if they don't." But they did. I put them on, zipped them up and buttoned them. I didn't even have to jump up an down to get the zipper up or lay flat to do the button. AND I can still breathe. I am just grinning from ear to ear. I've only had a fill for two day and I'm still on liquids. I have to stay on liquids for a whole week until the 27th. This makes my mom upset because she knows I won't be cooking dinner for a week. Since she doesn't cook except on special occasions (like Thanksgiving) that means she gets a lot of peanut butter sandwiches. I think that most of weight loss for this week should be attributed to Curves. I just realized that I am only 10 lbs. away from my next mini-goal! I've already decided which print I want and where it will be hung. This is the link: http://www.vangoghmuseumshop.com/ProductDetail.htm?productId=9110 and just below is my newly updated ticker. Wahoo.

  23. I'm doing well. Thanks for asking. I've been on vacation this week. We had an out of state wedding and some work to do on the house. We also went to an amusement park and a water park. NSV's all day long at both of those places!! I haven't actually scheduled anything yet. I'm thinking late summer - with insurance requirements (18 months out from WLS) and time off work ... I'm looking at about this time next year anyway. I am anxious to get a few professional opinions though. I have a few doctors my band surgeon recommended and I want to see Dr Schulman. I know you are anxious for phase two – has your surgeon given you any indication of a time frame?

    NSV

Congrats!! NSV's are the best especially crossing your legs. I can cross my legs, but also discovered I have bones--my wrist bone is protruding! lol

    Shout out your Nsv's

Yes, you can have an NSV before surgery. NSV stands for non scale victory, so it is anything you can celebrate that doesn't have to do with the numbers on the scale.
