    How does this equate?

There seems to be no rhyme nor reason to most sizing. I like buying American clothes now because they size smaller! Here a 14, which I generally fit now, is an American 10. I would rather pull a 10 off the rack than a 14! But this isn't consistent. I have found it in Not Your Daughters Jeans and in LuluLemon yoga gear but not in everything. Ultimately, I think you just have to try different brands to find the size that fits you, and don't worry too much about what number is on the label.

    exercise time of day

Last week I came across a thread from bodybuilding .com dated 4//23/2007 that addressed this same issue. A poster on that thread, PeteB claims from a previous article on bodybuilding.com he read "that 10 minutes of moderate cardio will purge about 50% of the accumulated lactic acid, and another ten minutes will purge 25% more." This was apparently suggested with the expectation that light easy cardio for a cool down will be sufficient - nothing aggressive. So....I went back and did not see a link to articles, and the science may have changed in seven years.......but food for thought and further investigation.

    Piercings?

I am a professional body piercer, have been doing it for 10 years. THe tongue is not really painful but can swell for upto 2 weeks. If you do soft foods, nothing hot or spicy for 4 or 5 days you will be fine. I reccomend peroxyl for cleaning, it is made by colgate and doesn't burn. The random swelling I have never experienced or know anyone else that has. I have a bigger guage barbell in my tongue and have never chipped my teeth. Adk for it to be pierced back a bit further and it is much less likely to chip teeth. Most people do it for the enhancement of oral sex, I'm not sure how it would get in the way. I know that if you suck on ice the barbell retains the cold for several mins, the same with heat. That can cause a different sensation. I say go for it, but if you are doing them that close together, ask if you will get a discount if you do them both the same day, it is less set-up and break down and less time overall. I always gave a slight discount for multiple piercings. Also I would start taking viatmin E, it helps the body to heal faster. If you have any questions feel free to ask either here or in a PM. ~Mandy
  7. Hi everyone! I'm from NJ and have AmeriHeath PPO … my doc said that according to my BMI of 36 and the fact that I have been on Glucophage w/ a diagnosis of PCOS for nearly 10 years, that I am a good candidate for Lap Band. I have met w/ the nutritionalist and have 2 1/2 months to go before I meet the 3 month requirement by AmeriHealth. In that time, I am also scheduled to see the Dietitian two more times, have an upper GI, see a therapist, attend a support group meeting, and meet w/ a cardiologist … all for clearance and validation of attendance. Whew!! LOL! Soooo my question is this … after I go through all of this, can insurance deny me?? I know my BMI and medical condition just inches me over the 'what qualifies you' mark … my fear is that in the end I won't get approved by the insurance, even though the doc gave me the thumbs up. I'd love your feedback on this!!! Thanks!!!!
  8. 1st of all, I'm so sorry for the loss of your husband and dad. 5 yrs ago, I also lost my husband at age 46 (I was 40), so I know the depression and weight gain that it causes. Please try to find a support group for widows - it helped me tremendously. Ok, you want the top ten things? Here you go: 1. Don't drink while you're eating or for 30-45 minutes afterwards. They say it's because you wash down whats in your tummy before the fullness feeling. I can't drink while eating because it caused me to vomit. 2. Make sure you only eat the amount directed by your dr. Some say 1 cup, some 3/4 of a cup. Follow your drs advisments. Snack only if directed by your dr 3. AVOID VOMITING AT ALL COSTS! For 2 yrs, I ate way too fast and caused myself to vomit (not really pb'ing, as it's much more violent but only food comes up) about 4-6x a week. My band finally had it last year and slipped. I'm still paying for that decision. 4. Exercise. Looks like you're already doing that tho! 5. Don't drink your calories. Like grape juice has like 100 calories a cup, Water has 0. 6. Get your Protein in. If you have a choice between protein and carbs, choose the protein first 7. Make sure you get fills when necessary. The band doesn't work if you're not adjusted properly 8.Watch your calories. With only eating 1 cup per meal, the calories should be fine and you probably won't need to count them, but I do in my head anyway. 9. I don't do this but keep a journal of everything you eat. Studies say that people who write down everything they eat, lose more weight. 10. Don't drink soda! Whether it's diet or not. The carbonation wreaks havoc with your band. Hope that helps a little. I'm sure there's more "rules" but I'm not one for many rules and break them all the time! You shouldn't need to "diet" while the band is actually working, but until you get proper restriction, you may need to. Good luck to you! And you will be happy again someday. I promise. I thought I'd never be happy again after losing my husband. 5 yrs later, I'm remarried and loving my new life. I still thik about Kevin with fond memories, but I'm so happy now I could burst! Marci
  9. You should ask your surgeon about whether you can use the protein powder with water. My surgeon didn't allow that during the clear liquids phase. Before my surgery, I asked him if I could use the Isopure protein drinks that come in bottles which are clear and he said those would be okay. Basically, clear liquids are just that, liquids you can see through. The only thing he included in the list that you couldn't see through is skim milk. I liked the Isopure drinks at first, but after 10 days of drinking them, I couldn't even look at an Isopure bottle.
  10. Ask your surgeon, but I was given no restrictions after 6 weeks. I am now at 10 weeks out. I too got the same back pains from weak abs, and working on abs slowly to eliminate them. I was surprised how weak my core got during the weeks after surgery.

    One Week Post-Op

I have not gotten around to posting about my surgery day, so I'll do a quickie. We got to the surgery center at 6a.m. and I was in surgery by 7:30, I was nervous and very emotional, thankfully time went by very quickly and before I knew it I was waking up in the recovery room. So, that's when reality set in. I was in a LOT of pain and freezing cold, I was shaking and shivering so much that my body was aching, they put two warm blankets on me and it still did nothing for me, my shoulders and chest hurt the most, once the pain meds. kicked in for the pain I was still dealing with the gas pain. I asked myself "What have I done???" I walked, had the yucky cocktail and X-ray and by 10:45 I was in the car going home. The first two days were very bad for me, and I kept thinking about all of the people posting here right after surgery, some post and blog as soon as they get home...I felt very discouraged, I had to stay on top of the pain medicine just to get a little relief. My turn around day was day five, that is when I felt like myself and could get in/out of bed and chairs on my own. I was on clear liquids for five days, yesterday I started soft foods and I was a happy girl! All in all, it's been a lot tougher than I ever thought it would be, but I am still glad I had the surgery. I'm down eight pounds since my surgery.

    Feeling Down

Melissa I can soooooooooooo relate. I feel like I have been stuck in the 240ish range for the last 10 years. When in fact it has only been for the last month. But it seems like a lifetime. One thing to remember is that yes your friend lost boat loads of weight fast but the key word there is FAST. This slow sometimes agonizingly slow process is the safest way to lose. It doesn't make the lack of scale movement any less tolerable. Take this time to look at the victories that don't require we measue the successes with a scale. You already mentioned the decrease in clothing size. What about walking without getting out of breath. More energy. Fitting into a chair without feeling like you are squeezed into it. Feeling sexier. Looking healthier and feeling healthier. Go get a manicure or pedicure and pamper yourself. Take a day or at least 15 min for YOU. Give yourself the praise that you deserve. We are all special and we will succeed at this journey. It will come Melissa. I have faith in all of us to accomplish our goals. It will come.

    Feeling Down

Melissa, do not let the numbers on the scale discourage you. I too have been stuck and I know I have been doing great with me eating and exercise. I know I have lost inches regardless of what the scale says. Sometimes our bodies just need a break, when I stop and think about it, my body has lost weight every week for 10 months...thats a long time , the scale is just taking a vacation right now and Iam ok with it....the last few lbs are always the hardest to lose..you will get there, remember this is a journey not a race. You have been successful so far and Iam sure you will continue to be, your body is probably just taking a time out right now too .What you are feeling, just know you are not alone we have all benn there or in my case Im right there with you
  14. Have you taken an honest look at what you have been eating and how much? Do you pick at all during the day? It is amazing how much we can eat and not even realize. My first month did not end with as much weight loss as I had hoped/expected, so I looked at myself and my habits and realized I was snacking in between meals - often without realizing it. As we all know, it is much harder to take off than to put on, so a bad day or two can cause my scale to go up 1-2 pounds as well. When that happens though, I make sure to eat healthier, smaller portions and really rev it up at the gym. It's amazing what an hour of cardio can do!! The important thing though is that you are down 23 lbs overall. But if you are unappy with your progress, take a long hard look at your habits - both dietary and exercise related. Is there something more you can do to speed up the weight loss? If so, make a promise to yourself to do it. And reward yourself (not with food) for every 5 or 10 lbs. that you lose. Also, Keep a pen and paper with you to write down everything you eat for a week. It will really help you get a truer sense of what / how much you are eating. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!!!

    Tough Decision

@FloridaGal1976 - My knees are almost as bad as yours. I'm bone on bone in both knees - similar height - weighed more and am older. Here's why I opted for going with insurance. (First - find out what your insurance requirements are - it may not be the six to 8 months you think - call and ask to speak with a nurse manager or case manager to get the answers.) My team required attendance at a group session (I did that end of April 2016) and had my first appointment with my surgeon on May 11, 2016. My surgery was on August 23, 2016. That was just enough time to get all the pre-op crap done - endoscopy, barium swallow, cardiology clearance, orthopedic clearance, pulmonary clearance and psych eval. All of that was required by my hospital group and not my insurance, although my insurance covered everything (except co-pays) except the psych. HW 271.5 SW 246.9 CW170-177 fluctuating right now. So I'm somewhere between 95 and 100 pounds down in 10 months. Pre-op - I was good for at least 1 Vicodin a day to control my knee pain along with regular cortisone shots and Synvisc for my knees. I've taken maybe 3 Vicodin since August - one was a result of running 2.5 miles without warming up well enough. As I'm sure you've read - a sleeve is a tool. So getting your head in the right place and understanding what's going on is important. It's not a long wait and while I was impatient at the start, I'm glad I had the three or four months. I spent time learning to eat better and making peace with a number of things. What can I do now that I couldn't before - I fence (as in en garde) about 5 hours a week. I strength train another 2 hours a week. I do pilates. While I had the surgery to try to speed up having bilateral knee replacement, based on my last conversations with my knee surgeon, I'll be able to put them off at least another 5-7 years. Wait it out. You'll be fine. I understand the impatience, but this is a learning process. Good luck.

    I don't understand...

I figured I would be a slow loser due to my age and relatively low BMI when I was banded. I have been pleasantly surprised to have been able to lose 10 lb a month so far. I haven't weighed myself since February 6, but I think I will probably hit the 10 lb mark this month too, based on the way my clothes are fitting. I don't exercise much or regularly, though I always just move a lot, walk when I could ride, walk fast, generally bustle around. I also don't set goals, not even the 10 lb per month thing. I get too discouraged if I fail, which perpetuates the failure. I would like to hit my final goal weight by the end of the summer, and I have about 20 lb to go. I am pretty restricted, so I can't eat much at a sitting. I probably don't ever eat more than 1/2 cup of food at a time; it is just too uncomfortable. I watch my calorie intake and try to stay below 1000 a day, which isn't that difficult because of the good restriction. So the answer is, as usual, we are all different. What works for one doesn't work for another; what is necessary to lose weight for one doesn't matter for another.

    Too many symptoms...

Your list of symptoms included: * Extreme fatigue * Feeling dizzy upon standing * Feeling fainting when standing up too long * Feeling weak after eating. Several individuals that undergo RNY gastric bypass surgery experience a condition called Reactive Hypoglycemia. It is a form of low blood sugar. This occurs in individuals that had diabetes prior to surgery but also in those that don't. You experience a large drop in blood sugar around from 1-3 hours after a meal. It catches some people by surprise because they faint, dropping onto the floor. But it can also be corrected by recognizing the signs of low blood sugar and reacting or by modifying the way you eat. https://www.ridgeviewmedical.org/services/bariatric-weight-loss/enewsletter-articles/reactive-hypoglycemia-postgastric-bypass This link describes some of the symptoms of the condition. http://www.weightlosssurgery.ca/before-after-surgery/reactive-hypoglycaemia-post-gastric-bypass/ If this matches some of your symptoms, you might read up on the condition using the internet. I am not sure about some of the other symptoms but you are taking quite a bit of medication (vistaril, remerom, zoloft, wellburtrin) and you may have some bad interactions happening. The most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery is to meet your Protein, Fluid and Vitamin daily requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved by meal volume control. At 10 months post-op, this should be around 3/4 cup per meal. So back to basics, reverify that you are meeting the prescribed requirements for protein, fluids and Vitamins. This article describes my experience after RNY gastric bypass surgery. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf Life is full of trade offs. In my case I had high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea and severe acid reflux (GERD) prior to surgery. I traded my love of food for good health. At 3 years post-op, I am content with that decision. I have been able to find some pleasure in eating again. I found mixing food groups together provided some flavor. I also found that softer foods such as chili and Soups went down much easier than harder foods such as steak. I hate Protein shakes and no longer take these. But I did this by fortifying the protein that I consume in meals. "Protein First". Anyways at the end of the article, I have included some recipes if you care to try them.
  21. Hi All, surgery went great, had some issues about 4 days out with rapid heart beat, sweating, feeling faint for several days. After a visit to the ER today and lot of tests, I was told that I was dehydrated. Even though I drink 64 oz a day I can't seem to drink enough. But that aside I am happy. One week out and I have lost 7.7 pounds. Nice!

    I'm BACK, & Banded !

Thanks. My Target size is 32-34. I was as big as 44-46. hieght is 5'10". My goal weight is 190-210. Right now its at 275 (lowest its been in 10 years). give or take 10lbs i've been hanging around the 300lbs mark. my Dad has 13 brothers and 3 sisters. I could pass for a brother to 7 of the boys just by when---- our hair line went up, our belt size grew , our hands started to hurt in the mornings and our ankles and knees began to give us grief. In a few years i have another 80lbs to look foward to comming around my waist. ALL of my Moms family is huge. the smallest one in her family is around 400lbs. So I have a lot of "genetics" going against me. But one of MY biggest problems is the size of meals i can eat. I'm the guy at the buffet bar that they dont want to see. (I've molested many buffet bars). 20 years ago I was a pro-bodybuilder. I know nutrition and I know how to exersize. And niether one of those two facts could stop my wieght gain. so now when i get start to hit the gym again in stead of a protien shake + Breakfast + a protien bar and then a snack, i'll be pleanty full with my drink. My goal isnt to have the body i did then (be nice) but the past is the past. I want to try to head of the diabeties and other things that run in my family, I Just want half the energy i did and the ability to run down into my field or fly upstairs in my house without getting so short winded my wife thinks i need medical attention, or feel like my chest is going to explode. when and if we have kids to be able to run and play with them and I want the extra years I'll gain by loosing the wieght to spend with my wife. so there it is. No this wasnt a rant against your question alex  . I just figured I'd lay it out there.
  23. I have taken a very long time to decide to do this. I had a failed band removed and my appetite has gone through the roof - I have gained 10# since it was removed. I had alot of conerns, like most of us do. I have done alot of research, talking to people, getting screening tests etc and I finally came to peace with this decision. I want the benefits that a healthier body will bring me, and I have tried so hard, so many times over the years to lose and keep weight off... and I just can't make anything work. Anyway, I made peace with my decision, scheduled my surgery and while still a little nervous, I was actually looking forward to it. Then, this week I had a major meltdown. It was triggered by being required to do another sleep study since I have gained weight since I was originally fitted with a cpap last year. At the same time, I found out that my insurance changes starting jan 1 and the sleeve is no longer covered! (the new insurance provider considers it investigational) For some reason, that feeling of pressure, like I have to keep my Dec date just caused a big emotional reaction. I am preapproved for this year - so really - if i want insurance coverage I need to do this in Dec! My sleep study went okay, no adjustment to the cpap needed. I do now have something new to worry about - people with sleep apnea have a higher anesthesia risk during the first 24 hours after surgery (when you no longer have a breathing tube). I didn't really know too much about this before. I am feeling a little better today, but I feel very confused why I would be so strong and confident about the decision to be sleeved, and to be thrown into an emotional tizzy due to the sleep apnea info plus the pending insurance issues.
  24. Two questions for those a little further down the line post op. I am 2 1/2 months post op and just started getting what I would call acid reflux, If I eat anything even close to bedtime I wake up 30 min to an hour later with stomach acid coming up in my throat... UGH. My Dr did not prescribe anthing for acid, but I take one occasionally. Would you just start taking one every day or continue only as needed. Or is this a sign of something more serious. This just started recently. And I might add, I can only eat very small portions. 2nd. My brother whom I am very close to and was my inspiraton for having WLS was sleeved by the same doctor in April. He now says his appetite has returned in full force and has gained 10 pounds back! I am terrified this will happen to me, I want to lose weight not gain it back! He does have an issue with his foot which is making it impossible to exercise. But still to regain your appitite after 5 months or so is scary. Is this normal?

How Many Cc's To Get Restriction?

I have 10 1/4cc on a 14cc band and now i kind of feel am in the greenzone, it took me all this time toget there. I can feel the restriction finally, my doctor was considering removing this band and replacing it for a smaller 10cc band, thank god is working now.. I felt hungry for like the longest time, hang in there, it will get better...
