  1. Hi. I guess I should've posted this question in the Revision Forum instead of the Gastric Bypass. So here it is again lol. I had a lap band and then revised to sleeve. Lost over 100 lbs with band and then 40 something more with sleeve. I have to have a revision due to gerd and other complications from my sleeve. Luckily, I did not lose any of my hair on either procedures listed above... And I know losing weight is much slower after each revision so maybe I'll be lucky again this time around. I was wondering if any of you lost your hair after revising from sleeve to bypass. Thank you in advance.

    Converting to Bypass

Morning :) I’m booked in to have a conversion from sleeve to mini bypass. I’m wondering if anyone can tell me how their surgery went and recovery times. Also if they lost much weight? I think my original sleeve stretched out - I had it 8 years ago. I started regaining weight 2 years ago and have now put on 20kg. The surgeon isn’t doing a sleeve revision - just the mini bypass. I am aiming to lose the 20kg within a year. Is this realistic? I’m worried about complications and not losing any weight. Thanks for any replies!

As you can see from my post a few days ago I was struggling. It’s going much better. I don’t feel like I ruined my life anymore. Maybe cause I’m about to move to purée. As you get to enjoy more foods you tend to feel better. I hope your struggles are all head based like mine. Head hunger can be so hard. If you’re having physical pain or complications I’m so sorry you’re hurting. But know that it will get better. Don’t give up on yourself. You’re stronger than your head let’s you think.

    Surgery was aborted.

How disappointing for you. No wonder you’re frustrated & deflated by the experience. It’s unfortunate your surgeon was unsupportive & not forthcoming about what happened. I agree with @Jaelzion’s suggestion to try to speak with him again to find out what really happened & what it means for you. Sometimes, regardless of the scans & tests they do or don’t do before surgery, what they find when they operate & can actually see is not what they expect. Better they stop the surgery then risk complications, a less successful surgery or prolonged recovery. On a positive, he’ll likely use the same incisions as he made with your aborted surgery when you do finally have your surgery. When I had my gall bladder removed my surgeon used three of the incisions he made when he did my sleeve & only had to make one new one to better access my gall. Good luck.
  6. So I had my RNY surgery on the 8th (yay!). Everything so far has gone really smooth, no complications to really speak of. Gas pain from the surgery itself seems to be gone, walking got all that out by day 2. However, I've noticed that whenever I eat or drink -anything- at all, even water, I get super gassy. My abdomen gets that gassy uncomfortable feeling and it stays for a good while but will eventually dissipate. It's not a huge deal or anything, and it's not really painful, but I was just wondering if this was common, and does it eventually pass? I was expecting it with maybe protein drinks or dairy, but wasn't expecting it with water.

    Anybody not working out??

I’m only two and A half months out. I had a Few complications with blood pressure issues which pushed my timeline back. My “exercise” really just consists of my day to day activities at this point… I go up and down the stairs multiple times a day, we (my kids and I) walk to the pool, we swim, we walk back, we go to the beach, I walk on the sand and play with my kids (this totally counts when you have a 4 year old! Lol). I have even volunteered to go run errands so I can get out and walk…. I have had severe mobility issues and I am just now able to get up and move. Before it was excruciating just sitting in a chair! I approached my ortho dr and asked if I could do physical therapy since I am now able to move more and I would like to figure out how to move correctly, build strength, and built flexibility in those joints I haven’t used in years. I get to call in on Monday and figure out when they can schedule me. I’m really looking forward to physical therapy!

Hi Catherine. I had surgery on June 3rd. I had a couple of minor complications and had to wait 12 hours before I was allowed to get out of bed and walk. I haven't had nausea at all, but the gas pain was really bad between doses of pain meds (which was only Tylenol with codeine after the first night). I would say to keep up on your meds and try to walk, but also REST. I just focused on getting some water in and resting and now at a little over a week, I feel almost back to normal. Hang in there!

    Surgery was aborted.

Oh my! How frustrating and disappointing, I know. BUT, and I know you don't necessarily want to hear this but, it's for the best. You wouldn't want some complication pop up because the liver got in the way, ya know? And, while this is not typical, it HAS HAPPENED to many people. They get in there and have to stop for one reason or another. I know you're angry, but I wouldn't let it stop me from going forward if it were me. I'd just try hard to lose the weight they mentioned and go for it again. So sorry but I know if you can do it!!
  10. So I am 1 month post op and am down 28 lbs. my starting weight was 245 lbs, My surgery day weight was 235 lbs and I’m now 217 lbs. I have no regrets. I had the gastric bypass on 5/6. My heartburn that I’ve experienced for years is GONE. It’s like magic. My sleep apnea is already better and I’m fitting into clothes that have been excruciatingly tight. I have more energy and can climb stairs at work without wanting to die. I have zero regrets. However, this decision was a risk benefit analysis. In my mind the risks of serious health complications secondary to my obesity were way higher than me getting the surgery. That’s not to say that this has been easy. I have a complicated relationship with food. I eat too much, I vomit. I eat something like candy (even the smart low sugar candy) I get dumping. Mashed potatoes, one of my favorite foods makes me dump. But I’m now craving healthy food like salad, fruits and veggies instead of Taco Bell and soda. If you feel like you’re ready and truly understand the risks than go for it. So far the best thing I’ve ever done.
  11. My 5 year surgery date is September 2021. I had an unremarkable recovery from my sleeve surgery. I lost 110 pounds but have put about 15 back on (or had... I have lost 9 of those). The biggest "issue" I had post-surgery was either hiccuping or sneezing when I was full. About a year ago, I started having acid issues. They've progressed to the point of significant GERD. I had been taking a PPI but it stopped working at all... seriously, I wake up at night coughing and gagging because there is stomach acid pretty much in my back teeth! Anyhow, for the last year I've been taking the PPI until it stops working, go off of it for about a month, take it again and it helps a bit but then stops working... wash, rinse, repeat. Four or five months ago I started having horrible pain with eating on occasion and would sometimes throw up. The vomiting has become almost a daily occurrence although not with every meal, and with no predictability. SO I called my surgeon, she listened to my complaints, and sent me for an upper GI swallow. The films show that I have a hiatal hernia and a narrowing of my esophagus. They could tell this because the 12mm barium coated sizing-pill that they had me swallow, to track it through my system, wouldn't go through the esophageal opening into my stomach. There is also narrowing of the pylorus, at the bottom of my pouch, but they can't tell how narrow because the stupid sizing pill was stuck in my esophagus! When I talked to my surgeon after she saw the films, she had me scheduled for an endoscopy (on 6/18) and surgery (on 6/22) to put my pouch back where it belongs, close the enlarged opening in my diaphragm, and to open up my esophagus. She also said- rather offhand- that depending on what she sees in the endoscopy/surgery that I might need a revision. I believe this was in referral to the pyloric narrowing, but I'm not sure. I'm not sure I really know what a revision is. My surgeon is a leader in robotic bariatric surgery, but she's not much for communication and "bedside manner." Anyhow... I don't know what to expect from all of this, what post-op requirements would be, etc. Surgeon scheduled the surgery as she said it clearly needs to be done, just wants the endoscopy done so there are "no surprises" once she gets in there. She also said to expect to be in the hospital for a couple of nights. I really don't know what to expect and have called her office for clarification but so far, no response. I guess I am sharing here to see if anyone has had anything like this happen this far out from surgery, has any advice or guesses, experience with this to share, etc.
  12. I had band done 8 years ago and lost 50 pounds. Slowly went back up to starting weight of 332. Had bypass done on May 19. Lost 10 pounds during liquid pre-op and another 14 pounds since bypass. I had no complications from surgery, no pain after and feel great! I am supposed to be on puréed food until Wednesday, but the site of puréed food makes me gag. I’ve been eating mushy turkey and chicken breast and have handled it well. I had reflux from the band and major swallowing problems but that seemed to have disappeared. I do take omeprezole and something so I don’t get gallstones along with multivitamins. Keep us posted on what you decide.

I had to finally walk away from most of the FB groups, support boards and YouTube channels as I didn't want to scare myself before surgery. It's already really nerve wracking to think I am choosing to have this surgery rather than it being a medical emergency. My primary care doctor put it into good perspective though - she said "isn't it nice that you can choose to have a surgery that may help you avoid needing a surgery you don't have a choice about in the future?" I keep reminding myself it is a pretty straightforward surgery and most people get through it without any issues. People get on a lot of those groups and do videos looking for help with the issues the are having...all the others are out there living life! I feel like it's important to be aware of the slim possibility of complications, but, chances are not many are going to have them. Maybe step away from some of the videos until after surgery? Hang in there!
  14. Last Thursday I had my lap band removed (put in 2008) because of complications with reflux. My doctor suggested switching to the sleeve and I agreed. However, now I’m really questioning if this was the right thing. I’ve been re- hospitalized since surgery after not being able to keep anything down. I’ve been back home since yesterday afternoon and I’m still battling the constant feeling of fullness and have been unable to drink much more than a few sips of my protein shakes daily. Has anyone experienced removal and switch to sleeve same day? Someone please tell me it gets better ☹️

Today's the day. 6 hours to go. I didn't find the month long preop optifast diet to bad except for the headaches on day 4 but after that I didn't feel hungry at all. I have really gotten into walking whilst on the diet and have lost nearly 15kg (33lbs). I have had a few people say to me why bother having the op now that I have lost the weight and just continue on the diet. It did make me question my decision for a while but I new I wouldn't keep the weight off. I'm now hoping for a smooth op with No complications. Good Luck to all you other guys with ops this month.
  16. Hello, I had my surgery on 12/8/2020. I am 67 years old, 5"6. I was unable to walk due to a broken ankle and surgery to reconstruct it in May 2020. I also have thyroid disease and osteoarthritis in both knees. So having a gastric sleeve was my last resort. I began to gain weight at 40 and became diabetic at 45. My highest weight was 310lbs. My surgery was without complications. But I am not losing weight as I thought I would. There was no support from my surgeon after the sleeve. I was just on my own. So I decided to get counselling for my eating disorder and depression. This is a slow process. I am hoping for the best. I am thankful for this site as I know I am not alone. SW 289 GW 160 CW 257 I have been stuck here since March. I know I have eating habits that must change. But I love to snack on salty and crunchy . I do not eat sugar, rice, bread, or most carbs. Most days I only eat two meals. I begin with protein. I do drink a protein shake for breakfast. My diabetes is in remission. I am now walking without support. I go to physical Therapy for my knees and ankle twice a week and also have water therapy. That is my exercise. I just wish my weight loss would get going. it can be done, but it's a complicated surgery and they normally won't do it unless you have serious medical issues that can't be resolved any other way. I'd wait and talk to the doctor first - they may be able to figure out what's going on and treat it.

Lying about not getting surgery is awful

I told an old acquaintance the other day that I had bariatric surgery. She proceeded to tell me about a horror story of one of her friends who had the surgery 25 years ago in Mexico. Her friend has had severe complications that have never resolved. Although I had mine done at a Bariatric Center of Excellence here in the states, her story did cause me anxiety. I’m only 3 weeks past surgery and I need to stay positive! I won’t be so open in the future!
  19. nervousness is very common before surgeries - I get freaked out every time before I have one!! I had to make myself quit reading the negative stories before I had my RNY surgery. I knew that major complications like that are rare, but they were still freaking me out. I finally had to make myself stop reading them.

    Finally in Onederland!! 🎉

Officially 9 months post op and I weigh 169lbs at 5’8 1/2. HW 252lbs (January 2020) Pre-op diet starting weight (236lbs on August 14, 2020) SW: 228 (August 27, 2020) CW: 169 Goal Weight (158-163 range) My BMI is currently 24.99 so I’ve finally crossed into what “they” call the normal range! Ha I feel great. I’ve had zero complications. I have not had any alcohol since pre surgery and don’t plan on trying any until at least 1 year post op. (I’ve never been a big drinker but would enjoy the occasional margarita or glass of wine). My surgeon asks his patients to wait a year and I told him I would. I do exercise at least 5 times a week incorporating cardio and strength (arms to try and tighten the loose skin- at age 44 things down bounce back like the used to). I’ve done this since I was 6 weeks post op. I haven’t cut out any foods. I don’t tolerate spicy foods like I used too so I don’t eat a lot of those. I don’t eat a lot of pasta or rice either - I’ll try a bite or put a small servings (think tablespoon) on my plate but I’m still focusing on protein and still aim for 80 grams of protein a day and drink one premier protein shake on most days). Yes I eat carbs and will have mashed potatoes, cookie or piece of cake (everything in moderation right?) Some days I get in 64-72 ounces of water other days I’m lucky if I get 45. For all of those in the fence (I was too), just know you can do it - it’s never too late to get yourself healthy.
  21. Thanks, everyone, for the thoughtful advice! 😊 It seems difficult to get a consensus amongst my doctors (and myself). It seems like they feel either would be appropriate, and that switching to bypass would be a toss-up between a somewhat increased chance of resolving diabetes and losing a little more weight versus an increased risk of long-term complications and vitamin deficiencies (which I've struggled with in the past). I don't think any of my doctors feel there's a really clear answer, and that's what's making this decision really difficult. 😳
  22. Poor advice. Everyone reacts differently. Just because procedure X didn't work for you doesn't mean it won't work for someone else. Conversely, just because procedure Y *DID* work for you, it doesn't guarantee it will work for anyone else. Even if you do your due diligence and your medical team is capable, there will always be a small percentage of people that have unforeseen side effects or complications to any procedure. While it is unfortunate to fall into that percentage, that doesn't invalidate the procedure.

    Dating post WLS and PS

I did online dating a lot many years ago. I got one very good relationship out of it. We eventually stopped dating, but we're still very close (I'm visiting him this weekend - it's complicated). After that guy and I broke up I met another guy and we went out for about a month until he broke up with me because he wasn't attracted to my body type - and that was after I had just lost 100 lbs. I was devastated. Of course, we're still friends, and I met some wonderful people through him. I don't know where people meet if not online. I work from home, I don't go to religious services, and I'm no longer in college. I'm definitely not going to hang out in bars, since I don't drink and I can't hear a darned thing in loud places. Maybe after I lose weight if I'm feeling secure enough I'll try online dating again, but I still am very picky. I am happy with my complicated relationship with my ex-boyfriend (the one I'm visiting) except that he doesn't like to travel and that's my passion.

4 weeks and feeling hungry a lot

I had surgery April 27 and I’ve been doing well no complications so far. Anyways I’m feeling hungry a lot more now but of course I still can’t eat very big portions(2-3oz at a time) I’m getting my proteins in and my water. I absolutely HATE the soft food diet and can’t wait to have real food. Anyways is eating 2-3 oz about 5-6x a day ok? I see my team on Wednesday but I’m just curious what everyone else is doing/did.
  25. Prestonandme thanks for letting me know that is a little complicated to update. Starwarsandcupcakes, I will try to use the link you posted. Hopefully, it will work. Thank you everyone for all your help. 😀
