    Compression socks

I had the intermittent inflatable leg things the whole time I was in hospital post op (they even put them back on after I got up to walk). That was just over 24 hours. Compression stockings to thigh level PLUS injected blood thinners both for 3 weeks after my surgery. My surgeon was absolutely adamant that that was whether I was walking for miles or sitting about all day.

Oh yea, that dressing adds up FAST! I usually use a balsamic vinaigrette, about 60 cals a serving. But sometimes I want the creamy yum too

Not to far from you, I'm in red lion up Shrewsbury way. All is good, started a new job that I really like other than the hours. Not losing weight as fast as I should but I'll get there. Made it to wonderland for a day. How's things on your end?

Def counts. Gardening and yard work is hard work. I sweat up a storm. I'm sorry to hear that. Stalls are so frustrating. If you're consistently getting sick I'd suggest checking with your team. Report to them what you've been eating, how fast or slow you eat, drinking habits etc. They should be able to help. Sometimes I've seen suggestions that focusing on protein (or protein shakes in your case since you're having trouble eating) and lots of hydration can break stalls too. Coming up on my 3 month this Saturday. Crazy how fast it goes. Weight is coming off every week. I have on and off days with eating. Sometimes I can barely take 2 bites, sometimes I can eat a cup of food in one meal. But I'm happy with my progress. I really want to start working out again. I manage long walks but nothing high intensity. My arms are getting so saggy. I dream of getting the skin removed on them. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

Please tell me I haven't failed.

Revision: it takes a month to recover from an actual sleeve, and I have way too fast-paced a job to do that. I'd probably have to take unpaid leave or even quit the job. I can't. ESG was only a thing I could do because it had a week recovery time tops. If the sleeve had a week recovery, I'd have done that instead. Regarding vanity: They know. They have all my medical stats. They know my blood pressure is something that people aspire to, that my labs are clean as a whistle, and that I can drag a kayak a mile through choppy waters to shore or walk 10 miles straight for 3 hours. They know I have major psychological issues surrounding my body. I've seen a therapist for over a decade for in part this reason. It hasn't made me like how I look whatsoever, just helped me cope enough to have a reasonable life. I'm on several psych meds. As it stands, I have a view on this that is similar to transition. When you have gender dysphoria, people who are any kind of sane by modern science don't tell you to suck it up and go to therapy to embrace being your birth sex. They tell you to seek hormone treatments and transition, because transition works. I don't think that trying to love being fat works either. You change your body if you want to change your body. I'm going to cut back to 1000 cal/day goal and hate my life, but I guess it's something. And I mean technically I guess I have lost like 30 lbs worst case. I'm just so pissed and dismayed that I haven't gotten below pre-pandemic weight before my wedding. I want to be Internet Hot (tm) at my wedding.

    5 Weeks Post-Op

Last week I had my 6 week follow up, I get about 600-700 calories a day while hitting 70g MIN. protein and 60oz MIN fluids. According the handout we were given in one of my classes at this stage I should be getting 800-1000 calories. So I was concerned I wasn't eating enough. He told me I was perfect and if I am hungry then eat more otherwise do not worry about the shortage. My days is kinda like this. Breakfast: shake (30 g protein) Lunch: some type of meat and a few bites of veggie (15-20g protein) A lot of time my lunches are leftover dinner from the night before. Dinner: Meat and again few bites of veggies. Snack: Usually a light cheese stick or baby bell cheese, sometimes turkey pepperoni and cheese, sometimes lunch meat and cheese rolls up. Every once in a while I eat a few carbs with lunch or dinner, Mini tortilla, sweet potato, I have even had bread and crackers. But I fill up very fast so it is not often and I usually can't finish the carb or I skip it because I am already full. PS: Before all you carb nazi's come at me: My nutritionist is VERY balanced. We eat all food groups, protein first and in moderation while controlling portion sizes!
  8. The stomach noises are normal. The stomach “flip” is concerning. I gotta ask a few basic questions. Did they teach you how to take small sips in the hospital with the little 15ml cups? Do you use a baby spoon when you eat or take small amounts? Do you stop drinking 30 minutes before you eat? I am at week 4 and things feel pretty normal when I eat or drink unless I eat too fast or take a large amount by accident. I don’t want you to get dehydrated, so focus on drinking more often. Lack of protein is not going to put you in the hospital, but not drinking enough fluids definitely WILL.
  9. Certainly the physical limitations do help. But the real benefit was giving me the time to reassess what I ate, how I ate & why I ate. To make new eating habits. My appetite really didn’t start to come back until well into my second year & my restriction still works at three years out. The boost to my extremely slack metabolism also helped & while it’s not as fast now as it was during that first year, the reset certainly helps me to maintain. One of the biggest changes was when I finished a diet in the past I went back to eating the same way I always had so the weight would come right back. This time I didn’t go back to my old habits. I eat very differently now. I worked out a way to eat that is right for me & is enjoyable, nutritious & sustainable (the longevity of being able to stick to it). I could be very restrictive about what & when I ate in the past & spent a lot of time thinking about eating or not eating. The restrictive aspects of those old diets weren’t sustainable & felt like I was punishing myself. A lot of my relationship with food has changed. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything. I still enjoy food - flavour, texture, etc. but that adage of eating to live not living to eat is very real for me.
  10. No you won’t always have to sip. Whether you’ll be able to guzzle & gulp is really an individual thing & an idiosyncrasy of your own new digestive system. Some find they can guzzle fluids a short time after surgery. Me I’m a two big gulps (4 swallows) & then I have to wait a couple of minutes & I worked up to that over about two years. You’ll also find you won’t have to wait the full 30 minutes before/after eating. I’m generally okay with a 5 min interval if I’m sipping but not gulping. I was never told to chew multiple times. But I kept my food pretty moist & I only took small bites. I used a teaspoon or a spork. I still cut up my meat to small bite size pieces when at home & never have mouthfuls of food. I still eat slowly too - 30-60 minutes for the about recommended portion size meals I eat now. If I eat too fast or too much or eat food that is too dry my restriction will kick in but that happens rarely now. It’s all about being mindful when you eat. At a year, I’d been maintaining for 6 months. I was eating whatever I wanted. I’d already made a lot of adjustments to how & what I ate & came to understand why I ate. There are foods I’ve chosen not to eat or rarely eat. But even before I reached goal I was just living my life. Socialising, eating out, even went on a girls’ weekend away. Sure I had to be careful with my food choices but I wasn’t restricted in anyway.

  12. Band Remover 2022

Baseball size bulge where port was after removal

Today is May 11th, 2022. I had my band removed 6 days ago. I have had it for 10 years (I am currently 43). I never had it filled after year 3 (I believe I only had it filled 3 times the first 1-2 years, then felt I was too restricted, losing weight too fast so I had some of the fill taken out. I am 5'4 and started out around 245 and got down to a low of 145-150. Once I had some of the fill taken out, I did gain 15-20 pounds. I was comfortable at the 163ish mark, was still a size 6-8. Then, more recently (so year 8 or so, I would randomly throw up/gag in the mornings, painfully, losing appetite). So, I had it completely unfilled November 2021, gained a few more pounds (likely overate @ holidays) :) . Anyways, today I am going for an early post-op followup (day 6 after the band removal) -- I am still in a lot of pain. The surgeon had told me that my surgery took twice as long as it should have because part of the band prongs (?) had to be DUG out from my intestines. I now have extra incisions - I was in so much pain after surgery. I needed help by my husband to go to washroom (could not go from standing to sitting on my own), was actually in tears and that was with pain medicine. That intense pain did somewhat subside a bit after day 2-3. However, I am still experiencing pretty intense pain when going from laying down to standing up. I also, similar to a poster above, feel a large hard bulge where the largest incision is (where the port used to be). The surgeon did mention some hematomas (bleeding) may develop, can be painful and should go away on their own (ugh, that sounds so awful! basically internal bleeding - scary!) Either way, I feel like I was a guinea pig with the FDA, there was not enough long term research done yet, to really know all the risks and how very common they are with lapband. Which, yes, someone had to be the experiments, I get it. My surgeon says he quit putting them in back in 2018. I know and understand it's elective surgery and I signed off on it --- I just wanted to share my experience and hoping the damage this band has done to my body will repair itself completely! For now, I am just glad it is OUT before it did even worse, possibly permanent damage. My suggestion (and any good bariatric doctor will tell you) - is if you've had it for 10 years, get it out. There are other options (sleeve is one), I personally am not electing to have one but to each their own -- this is just a PSA (public service announcement).
  13. 😫 Hi, I’m new to bariatricpal! I am 8 days post op VSG. I am struggling very badly. I’ve been so emotional because I feel like I’m doing wrong. I’m afraid I’ll eat or drink to fast or eat the wrong thing. I’ve been on Pinterest and YouTube constantly for help. I have followed all of my surgeons and dieticians instructions. I just don’t know if my body is getting enough. Today, I am weak, sore, and just exhausted.

It passes!! Everyone goes though it! It is a short term emotion! I'm almost five years post op! You made the right decision! Don't focus on the change right now. Try to entertain your mind. What your feeling only last about a week. It's related to your body adjusting and you mind adjusting. You got this!!

I agree with Tara it's hard right now but it gets better do t forget your hormones will be all over the place you may even feel depressed. Be kind to yourself reach out and talk to people how you are feeling .

    Psychology appt anxious

I have heard that if i eat to fast i will get sick (my wife told me this actually) i tend to eat big bites and again my wife tells me if you eat a big piece you're going to get sick now as far as seconds and thirds i don't know why i do it i know i am full yet i do it why do you think i do it as far as the emotional eating or being board i am not sure if i do both or one or the the other if i had to guess id say emotional i know i drink a lot when i am bored which i mentioned about feeling bloated, i tend to gulp when i drink.
  15. ShoppGirl

    Psychology appt anxious

You will have to work on both of these things. The sleeve surgery should reduce your hunger hormone and will make you eat smaller portions but it won’t stop you from going back for seconds and thirds after a bit of time passes. If you are eating because you are board or because of emotions you may benefit from a bariatric therapist because boredom and emotional eating is disordered eating. The fluids you will have to learn to take smaller sips more often but your body should send you signals to help make that change. It will hurt if you drink too fast.

Do you ever "forget" you had surgery?

My hunger came back right after 1 month post-Op. So I do get hungry too, may be not as often as you, but every few hours I get hungry and I make sure to eat around there. At times, I don't make it to the food either cuz of my schedule or other reasons but I tolerate it fine. I have done intermittent fasting in the past and being hungry doesn't bother me much that I have to have to eat it. Yeh it may be bothersome and may intensify your cravings, but may be try eating to your schedule only and the amount you're allowed per your routine. Rest of the time, ignore your hunger signals by distracting yourself. Hope your surgical center and you find your way through.

    IS THIS NORMAL?

About the first week , I could only do small sips because of my esophagus being stretched and it was "extremely narrow" according to my surgeon. Drinking didn't bother my stomach but it hurt my throat. After about a week I was drinking pretty normal but could not take huge gulps, if would feel like I was swallowing a hard lump of something. Now, 7 weeks out, I can drink a lot and fast. I wouldn't say I chug like before surgery but I can definitely get water down quick. Before I had surgery I just kept reading "sip, sip, sip" and I was worried I would never be able to drink normal again but that was short lived and I was back to normal in no time.

    Slider foods and dumping

I kind of wish I had this. Im 5 months post op Bypass and I do not dump, I can eat a lot of sugar , my issue is the learning how to eat slow when I used to devour all my food whole. now if i space out for 1 second and have 1 bite without chewing i feel the pain, all my pain has come from eating too fast, not too much sugar, I can eat candy and know its bad for me, but never have I dumped, I have passed out a few times after drinking too quickly after eating or after not shewing chicken well enough and drinking 30 minutes later. I guess we each have our own journey through it all. I just need to stay eating healthy 95% of of the time and I will be fine. Im down about 120 pounds in 5 months. so now 40 pounds from my goal weight!

    Restaurant workers

You can have more than 80g protein, but it is actually possible to get TOO much protein. At least for a "normal" person, Since bypass patients don't absorb everything it might be harder, I am not sure about that part. I would probably do protein shakes at work since you don't get breaks. You can't really eat fast enough to sneak a quick meal in. It would just be a bite or 2 at a time and take forever to eat which may classify as "grazing". I am about 7 weeks post op and it takes me about 30 minutes to eat 2oz of meat and a few bites of veggies.

    How people around us eat

Since my surgery I cannot stand ads for fast food places - tv, cinemas, billboards, etc. Social media frustrates me because of the ads for unhealthy food & posts about enormous portion sizes & high fat, high sugar food. They repulse me & literally turn my stomach. Then it’s portion sizes in general when you eat out. We’re eating what is about a healthy portion size & people question us but find it perfectly okay that others are gorging on meals 2, 3 or more times the size they should be eating.
  21. Hi! I know I'm "new" to all of this. I'm 13 days post op. The first 5 days after surgery, I had lost 7.5 lbs. By the 7 day mark, I had hit a 9 lb weight loss. I was SO EXCITED so I figured I'd weigh myself maybe every 4 days after the 7 day mark. I was REALLY looking forward to my progress, and I was so shocked by the original fast weight loss I just couldn't help myself. Keep in mind -- I'm STILL on the all liquid diet. Well, the last 6 days, I have lost 0 lbs. ZERO! I' got down to 244.0 lbs, then days later 244.5 lbs and today 245.4 lbs. So technically speaking I've actually gained 0.9 lb. HOW?! Can someone help explain? Is this normal? I'm following all the rules. The only thing I'm not doing anymore is working out since I haven't gotten the clearance, but I can totally go on long hour walks as my "exercise" for now. That's the only plan I have at this moment... My other confusion and worries lie in this: If I'm on the all liquid diet still, and I'm post surgery, IF I haven't lost ANY weight in the past week, I'm already getting nervous/anxious for when I am allowed to eat solid foods (hopefully starting tomorrow) and how maybe I'll gain weight.

    How people around us eat

I have slowed down a good bit but I have to actively pay attention to it, if I don't I eat quick. It doesn't seem to bother me though but I still try to eat slower so am still eating while the people are around me eating larger meals. If I ate my tiny servings as fast I did it would be a 5 minute meal.. if that. haha
  23. ShoppGirl

    How people around us eat

I never noticed. Although I still eat kinda fast. It doesn’t cause me any issues so As much as I try to eat slower, I don’t think I slowed down as mich as many of you.
  24. OK- Maybe I am just crazy but I have always hated being able to hear people chew. BUT NOW..after surgery.. I CANNOT STAND IT! Being around some people eat really makes me want to vomit. How they eat, how fast they eat, their giant bites that barely fit into their mouths, their chomping and slurping! It literally turns my stomach. It also gets me so irritated, bad. Like I think about punching them or taking their food and throwing it across the room. I know I have read some people being grossed out by how much people eat, but that doesn't bother me. You do you, although I do think "man, I can't believe I uses to eat that much or more" Is this just me???? Am I nuts??
  25. My surgery is coming fast, it was moved up via a cancellation to next week, eek! I’m a combo of fear of the unknown, and calmness of giving it up to the professionals to care for me. I’m over 60 and really never considered I could stop the diet cycle by having WLS. A family member had it, and was happy they did it, this and knowing a few WLS veterans happy with their surgery, spurred me on to do gastric bypass. They had a good recovery with no issues. I’m hoping for a great outcome and that it resolves my Gerd and sleep apnea in time as well. I fear pain, hair loss, complications, how I’ll feel about all that skin, regrets. I look forward to many positive body changes, more energy, onederland, not being obese, cuter clothes 😀 I appreciate everyone sharing here! I’ve learned a lot.
