  1. It's encouraging to see a person on this site who has actually lost the weight!! Thanks for posting.

    This surgery is bullshit...

Bari surgery purveyors do oversell these procedures: medicine is a business, and bariatric surgery has its own marketing plans and strategies. If someone has said you must eat 800 cal/day forever, this is an eating disorder/anorexia. That limit should only be in place during the pre- & immediate post-surg diet. It's true the surgery is sold as a "cure," albeit the medical world also couches this procedure as a "tool" for a cure. It's also true that most patients never get to their ideal weight, much less keep off the weight they lose initially. It's also true that stomach amputation and the year prior to the surgery which requires generally unnecessary appointments, procedures, tests, labs, etc., is obscenely profitable for the hospitals and the only reason they offer it. Those of us who choose this outrageous procedure are desperate and hopeless. The medical world knows this. They choose to underreport outcomes such as Goodmanje's, who has a right to voice frustrations, concerns, and warnings. We're all hoping to be one of the "lucky" ones. And we're all willing to be permanently altered with no guarantees. Perhaps, instead, as with any business, we should demand there be guarantee of a reasonable outcome.

It sure doesn't sound like you had realistic expectations of WLS, and I'm wondering how you were approved for it. Instead of cursing your surgery, though, how about investing in some bariatric therapy to help you develop some new attitudes and strategies that will make you happier as you do the hard work we all need to do to lose weight?

    This surgery is bullshit...

Hi, I’m so sorry you’re having a difficult time. I have surgery in December and I worry about this same thing happening to me. I’ve heard so many different theories as to why the weight comes off so slow. If you don’t mind me asking how many pounds were you overweight? Do you find that you are able to consume what you used to? If so, I would definitely talk with your surgeon. I heard a woman on here say she did the bypass after the sleeve was not effective enough. Have you talked to your surgeon? I wish you all the best and know that it will get better. 🧡
  5. I have PCOS and had bariatric surgery 2nd september, from 125kg im now 98 and have just found out im pregnant! Any ladies on here experienced the same thing? ive had alot of sickness since my op and i think this has counteracted my contraception pill with everything else going on i didnt even think about that til i missed my period. Anyone got any good advice or stories? Im so terrified that its too soon. I lost a baby in 2019 but i was at my highest weight and unhealthy, surely the loss of 4 stone is a more positive situation to be in? Thanks Guys i dont know where else to turn 😭

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I got my surgery end of September and stopped losing weight for three weeks. It was agonizing!! On top of that I couldnt use the bathroom and felt super nauseous. I regretted my surgery and cried and felt very sorry for myself. Once I was able to use the bathroom (talked to my nutritionist about what to do) everything turned out just fine. I’m only (almost) 9 weeks out but the last four weeks I’ve been losing 3-4lbs per week. What I’m saying is: don’t give up. Don’t stress out. Trust the process and follow your diet. This will work (I’m also trying to keep that in mind for next time when I stall 🙃)

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Checking in. I will be 2 weeks post op tomorrow. On Wednesday my surgeon cleared me to start soft food. I have been eating fish that I grill and I have been using my Instapot to pressure cook some things. I am not interested in puréed. I can live on apple sauce and fish for a long time. Weight loss has stopped at 30 pounds in 3 weeks which I am fine with. I haven’t lost much post op but I lost so much Pre-op I am not surprised. The Dermabond is finally starting to come off my incisions. No problems so far tolerating food. I am slowing sampling different things. I am avoiding sugar. I so far have nothing but positives to say about my experience. For me this isn’t about a number on a scale. This is about my health and I already feel more energetic and am not longer using my CPAP.

I agree. WLS is not for everyone, perhaps not even for most. I further agree that with or without surgery, losing weight is a matter of calories in vs. calories out. WLS is not magic. It requires us to follow a well defined plan for the rest of our lives, lest we not lose enough or even gain the weight back. It requires commitment. It's not sold as easy, at least not to me. How did you imagine all this would play out for you? Literally, what did you expect you needed to do and what the surgery would do? Tek

    This surgery is bullshit...

Sorry to hear things have been rough. Tracking calories does not work for me, I’ve learned from other eating plans that it makes me obsessive, and is not sustainable for me. Perhaps talking with a nutritionist about what you are eating each day might help? I follow the rules of 60 or more grams of protein each day, no added sugar, 5 g or less fat per serving, and eat until I am satisfied. No more. During the work week, I eat the same thing every day from breakfast until afternoon snack. Dinners are healthy and usually involve some form of chicken or turkey. I know this might not work for everyone, but it makes it easy for me and my weight loss has been great. Ultimately, each person is different, and what works for me and my program may not work best for you. I hope you find something that works for you, and allows you to use your new tool to the fullest!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Don't have the surgery. I did and I'm not losing any weight... It's WAY more trouble than it's worth.

    This surgery is bullshit...

That's all great advice. I agree 100%. All of the advice given would work without having surgery. That's all I'm saying. If you want to lose weight it's all down to diet and exercise. With or without surgery.... So my advise to anyone considering the surgery is don't do it. All you have to do is work hard, follow a plan and don't give up. It's your choice. Good luck with that.

I get that you are frustrated and perhaps angry. Honestly, it's not too late for you, unless you give up. Your surgery is still there. It will make what you still need to do easier. From what I see you have received good advice: Follow your plan to the letter, weigh your food, log your food, don't drink with meals. These things are what will get you losing weight. These are also the things you refuse to do. It seems you would rather quit and blame the surgery. As with all things, it's your life, it's your choice. Good luck, Tek

    This surgery is bullshit...

WLS is a tool. Like most tools, it makes the job easier but it doesn't do all the work. VSG is intended to restrict volume. It makes it harder to eat a large volume of food at one time. Our post-op plans specify certain types and volumes of food. In the early months when the restriction is new you (editorial you) often can't eat the amount of food for which your plan calls. For a period you can barely eat your full meal. During this period you are creating new habits: Healthier food choices, defined portions, new expectations, with the positive reinforcement of losing weight. If you haven't followed plan you will still lose weight for a short time, but having not changed habits, attitude, or outlook when the time comes when you can eat more you do. Making these habit changes later, when the restriction has relaxed, can be nearly as difficult as doing it without surgery. Good luck, Tek

There is a Baritastic app that is very easy to use to track your calories. You can scan items or manually add them. Super quick super easy just go to your App Store and search Baritastic you will find it. I’ve watched my 600 pound life and it seems that they do not loose weight or start to regain when they eat to high of calories or wrong food. Like mashed potatoes and gravy etc. remember high Protein low carb. (Maybe try watching a few episodes you glean a lot of insight and information from it) I would try to get in with your nutritionist after you have logged your food for a week if you still are not loosing. Remember the surgery is just a tool not a miracle! Good luck!

    This surgery is bullshit...

only about 5% of people are able to lose a significant amount of weight and keep it off. Unfortunately, I was not one of the 5%. I always gained back every pound of it. Surgery is the only thing that ever worked for me.

    This surgery is bullshit...

So why have the surgery and not just see a nutritionist and personal trainer then follow their plan? What point does it serve to remove a portion of someone's stomach and then tell them to follow a very strict diet and exercise program to lose weight? If people don't have a problem with diet and exercise they don't need to take drastic measures like surgery.

if you're eating 800 calories a day, you'd be losing weight. I know you said you hate logging, but it sounds like that's what you need to do, unfortunately...

With all kindness, your doctor knows what to do. They are they experts. Follow their plan to a T. That is how you’ll lose the weight. I followed EXACTLY what my doctor told me to do 99% of the time. I’m over two years out, down 146 lbs, and easily maintaining my loss. I did it by developing new habits guided by my physician and her team.
  19. yes - a minority never loses their hunger. And another minority loses theirs permanently (I wish I was one of those!!!), but for most of us, we do lose it temporarily. It usually comes back sometime during the first year. and yes - I can satisfy my hunger. My biggest problem pre-op, and now - isn't really eating when I'm hungry - it's eating when I'm NOT hungry - (which for me is when I'm bored. For some people, it's eating when they're stressed). So it's mental rather than physical. It's a constant battle. But I'll do whatever I can to keep all that weight from coming back!!!
  20. I had gastric sleeve surgery on July 21st. Over the first six weeks I lost 30lbs. I haven't lost a single pound since then..... My doctor keeps saying I need to keep my daily calorie intake to 800 or less to lose weight. I haven't been logging everything but I think I'm staying around that number... I'm not a very disciplined person so keeping track of that every day usually doesn't happen. I'm super frustrated and getting depressed over this. If I was able to lose weight by sticking to a very strict diet and exercise program I would have done that a long time ago and never had the surgery. I had a big part of my stomach removed for nothing.... Anybody else out there who can't lose weight even after weight loss surgery? I don't know what to do....

    Anyone for October 2020?

Hi Orchidlover Hopefully by now you've figured out how to get and stay back on track. How was Thanksgiving for you? I am also struggling and stopped losing, as a matter of fact I've gained a few pounds. I was in a really bad car accident in July which caused me to be home and not doing any exercising other than physical therapy. I have now restarted as of last week doing a little walking. I actually pushed myself yesterday to do a little more than walk slowly and I felt OK. I have been home since my accident. Prior to the accident I was losing but very slowly, I mean extremely slow. I still took it as a win cuz at least I want gaining. We have to take all our victory laps regardless. I especially do this because, I have been and still am dealing with back issues and being on steroids all the time didn't help me. I also have not been eating right lately. I find myself ALWAYS hungry and always snacking and not always on healthy stuff that'll be conducive to weightloss. We know what we're doing wrong, we have the tools to do what's right but we are so much in our heads when we get off track, it blocks us from clearly seeing those said tools that'll help us to get back where we know we can abs want to be. Let's start today by not doing the things we have been doing lately, whether it's eating badly or not exercising and making excuses why we're doing these things. Once we put our minds to doing it we can. you've done it before to be able to lose 100 pounds.. which is a huge deal, congrats on that. I have only lost a total of 58 pounds and that's over two surgeries. I have had major setbacks but I'm not giving up and I'm going to stop letting those things get in the way of my success to get to a 100lb loss. Fight for this, you got it and you know how to. Good luck.

    Anyone for October 2020?

Hi Orchidlover - hope things are going better for you now. It's hard fitting everything in with full time work and I really sympathise. Try to think of your original goal and how well you've done already to lose 100lbs! That's a huge achievement. I think that all of us who have gastric surgery are going to have to treat the eating/exercise as a lifelong thing, and inevitably we'll slip at times. We just have to get back on track by prioritising our health over everything else. I know it's easy to say, but not always easy to do. My diet has definitely slipped and while I'm not putting on weight I'm definitely not eating right. As for exercise - I did well at first but now that's almost non-existent. You're definitely not alone in struggling but you can get back on track and do it!!

    Anyone for October 2020?

Hi! I can empathise with that. People say - oh, you've lost so much weight, you look great - and then I think - so you;re saying how rubbish I looked before? Even people I don't really know like my dentist's receptionist! It's particularly irritating/upsetting when people make the same comment every time they see me. I also catch myself thinking about how much time/how many years I spent very overweight and unhealthy, which meant I felt self-conscious and insecure - and then I obsess a bit about how awful I looked for all of that time. I suppose we just have to try to put all that behind us and just look forward.
  24. Hi! I am 6 days post-op from the gastric bypass. I lost 14lbs so far which is super exciting since I can’t remember the last time I had lost this much weight. I am now drinking protein shakes and water but i am honestly struggling with that. I can’t seem to drink enough water or protein a day. It’s just that I get so incredibly full and I can’t seem to stomach anything more. I’m not pushing myself and i’m listening to my body but I don’t want to become dehydrated. Does anybody have any suggestions with how to drink more water and protein? Anything and everything helps!

    Anyone for October 2020?

Hey everyone! Just wondering how you all were doing through the holidays. Given the pandemic, this was the first time I’ve seen my extended family since I’ve had surgery and lost a lot of weight. My family knew I had the surgery and they were very supportive, but the amount of comments I got on my appearance really hurt my feelings. Everyone was telling me how good I looked, and how beautiful I am, and I thought compliments like those would make me happy, but they didn’t. It was just a harsh reminder of how not beautiful and how not good I used to look. Is anyone else experiencing feeling like this? I’m so happy to be where I’m at, but I’m very insecure about my past appearance.
