    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

So, I cheated on my 2 week liquid diet on Saturday and now the scale is back up 4lbs that didn't drop after going back to the diet full force Sunday. My advice, don't go off it. I only had a bowl of egg drop soup and a salad at PF Changs and here I am regretting it. In my opinion, it is not worth it to go off the 2 week diet - because it feels really good to see the scale moving down ( I was going down 2 solid lbs. a day before). This diet is totally doable. Best of luck to everyone!

I've done a lousy job with the two-week LS diet, and I'm extremely nervous that my surgeon won't operate. I'm constantly telling myself that worrying won't help, he'll either proceed or he won't, all I can do now is be super-strict about the no-solids-for-48-hours-prior rule.

MARCH 21ST HERE!!! Super pumped up and ready.🤩 My pre-op diet starts on the 11th, but that falls on a Friday so I think I am going to start it sooner. I have always felt like sticking with diets, or healthy eating over the weekends is harder so I feel this will be the same. I think starting during the week and getting into a groove before hitting the weekend will be beneficial for me. Good luck to all of us!

Remember you did have something sent down your throat during the surgery and it may just be a little inflamed. I had a hoarse throat for a week or so but it ended up just fine. The device that goes down the throat is what they use to shape your poach so they can cut and staple it from outside the stomach.

For my surgeon's program I'm on full liquids week 1 and 2, pureed 3 and 4, and soft solids 5 and 6. So no regular diet until week 7.

Tomorrow is my three-year anniversary. I stayed at my goal weight pretty easily for the first 18 months but gained about 20 pounds over the past year. I'm eating the same things as I did during the first year, but more of them. My diet is still high protein, low carb, low fat, and no sugar (or alcohol). I'm satisfied with my current weight, but now I really need to be careful to make sure I don't creep up. It's definitely harder than it was during the first 18 months or so, but I'll never go back to my old way of eating (nor anywhere near my previous weight).

    First time

Mine completely went away the first three years after surgery. I have reflux issues occasionally again now, but they're mild - nothing some Tums or Rolaids won't knock out. gastric bypass IS known to improve if not outright cure GERD for most people (not all - but most people)

Hello everyone! We are now at three years since surgery, and I wanted to see how you all are doing? I'm doing okay, but not great. I've gained about 20 pounds in the past year, and I'm not very happy about it. I could make excuses (lockdown, stress, etc.), but the reality is that I have nobody to blame but myself. It's so much easier to eat at this point, and I acknowledged that I have overindulged. I'm still at a reasonable weight, but I know that I have to be very careful so I don't creep up slowly from here. I would ideally like to lose 10-15 pounds, but I'm not going to beat myself up if I don't. I'm still much healthier and more active than I was before surgery. I hope everyone else is doing well!

    HELLO

I kind of feel like the prep, surgery, and recovery are like having a baby. There’s a lot of thinking and planning all for one event that lasts a couple of a few hours, then recovery for a few weeks. The tough part is raising “your child” for the rest of your life. It can be as fun or boring as you make it.

    Pre Operative Chaos and Confusion

Hello! I was pre-approved in July 2021 too. My insurance required 6 months of nutritional classes which I started the first week in August and finished first week of January 2022. I’m in Anaheim! So we’re neighbors! After the nutritional class which was all done through Zoom there was a zoom doctors talk. And a phone psych consult. Lots of hoops and loops! I thought I’d get a surgery date first and then do the pre-op testing needed and the surgical clearance but apparently it’s the other way around as they have told me. I know that the Covid omicron surge may have muddled the wait times. and that my place Smart Dimensions has a lot ALOT of patients in the queues. I wish the process could have been explained more straightforwardly and been more expedient. I have some pre-op procedures on the 1st, chest x-ray and upper GI and clearance but I haven’t been given a walk-through or instructions about a liquid diet beforehand. Will that be next? Lol! I’m ready for the next hoop! Good Luck with your upcoming surgery!
  12. I have my pre-op procedures of upper GI and chest X-ray on Tuesday morning and my pre-op primary care physician appointment for clearance on Tuesday afternoon. I’m getting closer! After I had finished my nutritional class requirements at the first of January I thought surgery was imminent as we were told in the doctor talk that we were about a month away. But as I’ve read on here, enjoy the journey. Don’t rush. Be patient. Be gentle. I haven’t been very patient which is very evident by how little I chewed my food! I’ve been working on that. I’m turning 60 this week! I am excited that this milestone and my wls are close together. I feel ready for some good changes. My bmi is 44. I think at my highest weight it was 46. I feel so roly-poly. I want to kick my type 2 diabetes to the curb. I want to be able to be more active without the constant pain in my arthritic knees and ankles. I want to keep up with my two little granddaughters. I want to fit into seats! I am very glad to find this app/support group. My doc said that they had one on Facebook but I’ve given up that so I was glad to find this better alternative.

    Anyone in MINNESOTA?

No, I was ok . Very tired and sore but It was tolerable. No drains for me. That might be for bypass I had the sleeve. My husband took only I day off and I was ok. I didn't do stairs. Alot of sleeping and walking and of course trying to get liquids in. I have a high energy job so I took 5 weeks off and I was good going back. It took alot out of me the first couple days back. I love premeir protein. I had to water them down after surgery but they have so many flavors that you don't get too bored. All flavors except the peanut butter( I didn't like that one ) were really good. No problem asking questions. I had so many also

I'm not really having food funerals. Partly, I think, because I had a really bad infection in October from a cat bite that basically had me super sick from the industrial strength antibiotics they had me on. Completely lost my appetite, and although I can and am eating now, I'm just not feeling the need to binge. Though, I did get some dairy queen last night lol and I had a couple of drinks. Might have some carb heavy meals before starting my pre-op diet, but other than that, I'm more focused on my goals. After 21 years, 10 years of which I've been trying to get Dr's to understand the severity of the stomach issues I have, I know what this lifestyle looks like. I didn't gain back any of the weight from my original surgery, but I never got to goal weight either. I have about another 75-95 lbs to lose. I know this time around it's not going to come off as easily or quickly, but I'm ready to put in the work. Only thing that's a bummer is, the surgery is about 2 weeks before my 50th, so no birthday cake for me (unless it's a cake flavored protein drink lol).

I'm going to pack my phone charger, a robe and some slide on shoes for walking. Chapstick and hair things... toothbrush, toothpaste. My C-pap machine. I'm not really sure what else. Clothes to come home in. My 15 year-old daughter and I have been watching all the Oscar nominated movies before the Oscars at the end of March... if we haven't finished by my recovery time, we will take that time to catch up. My husband works from home and I homeschool my 15 and 17 year-olds (they will be on spring break the week of my surgery) and my daughter, who is 25 and lives 90 minutes away, is going to come home and "help" for a few days... which really means she is using my surgery as an excuse to come home and see the dog. I have a feeling we will be watching a lot of movies and if the weather is nice, we will be doing a lot of walking around the block.

I have to do 10 days of 6 meals consisting of one protein shake and a half cup cooked non-starch veggies or a cup of raw non-starch veggies and a half a cup of fruit. I can also have broth, jello, popsicles, sugar-free drinks, water. I start that two weeks from yesterday. I went to Costco yesterday and purchased some Gatorade Protein drinks and some protein shakes. 😬 It's starting to feel real!

Look at these lovely flowers I just got from my church. A fellow church member just delivered them (I've been watching online in the weeks leading up to surgery). These flowers were in the sanctuary during service then cut down and brought to me along with a lovely card with prayers and well wishes. Mr Izzy loves flowers, but thankfully doesn't eat them. I am super super excited!! I'm having trouble sleeping at this point. I'm so damn calm, no anxiety. My approval process for revision was around 3 weeks from the day I had the endoscopy to the day I got the phone call telling me the good news. With the kind of reflux damage I have surgery almost always happens. I had a second scope a few weeks ago and the damage had gotten worse, not better. However, the ulcers did heal thanks to the medication they put me on. I didn't really have any food funerals. I had a few things I wanted to eat one last time, but was very underwhelmed with all of it. Yes, there will be some food I'll miss but I've been wanting to get sugar out of my diet anyhow. I'm more ready for the change this time than for my sleeve 7 years ago. I'd love to lose another 25 pounds to get down to 160. I think it's very realistic. Are you having any food funerals or are you kinda sick of food as thus point? Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. Hi everyone, I am 2 weeks since my gastric sleeve. I am only getting in about 1.2 litres of fluid in a day and can only manage broth, 0.2% Greek yoghurt and skim milk. Is anyone the same? I am hoping to get approval to start protein shakes in a couple of days. No hunger but definitely feeling tired. Wishing everyone the best for their journey!

Hey there! We’re almost surgery buddies. I had my sleeve surgery the day before yours, definitely had some of the same issues. I had bleeding as well, it was a lot and was quite concerning. I also had a BP dip, but I’m stabilized now. I think that I am dealing with the hunger pains as well, (I don’t really know what to do about it. I’m just offering my support as someone who is also feeling it!) I’ve just been trying to note it, and either drink a broth or soup— something that at least has a good flavor. I’m hopeful that puréed food in a week or so will help with this!

Oh gracious no. I eat all meats (except offal - can’t do that) & seafood. I’m a carnivore. I was eating it from solid foods at week 7 & some in the soft food stage. Only difficulty is if the meat is too dry or too fatty but that’s easy to work around. I followed plan pretty much always until I hit maintenance at 6 months & all meats were allowed. I then made small changes as I developed my own eating plan based on how I wanted to progress & what would compliment my lifestyle. There’s a lot of similarities with my plan though. I eat most things but keep my my sugar intake very low, keep carbs to two serves whole/multi grains (no bread, pasta or rice) & keep fats relatively low. I don’t do fast food at all & rarely have take away (5x in almost 3yrs & carefully choose what I eat). I’ve put on a good kg recently which I’m hoping is because I’ve upped my protein & haven’t reduced other things enough to compensate - it’s a fine balance to ensure I still get in all my other nutrients. (I don’t absorb protein well since my gall was removed last year.)
