I am Amazed !!! I have been getting so many phone calls from Dr. Jose Rodriguez and Dr. Elmo's patients. I would say so far about 10 phone calls and many emails and everyone raved about the service and how awesome the surgeon and the team was. ...I am now confident about my Decision and can put my mind at Ease. I also did not know that Dr. Jose Rodriguez received his Bariatric training from UPMC HOSPITAL in Pittsburg Pennsylvania... A nurse practitioner, one of his patient told me all about his training at UPMC because she worked there at the time. It makes me feel so much better knowing that he had some sort of training in the USA.... Now I am doing the happy dance.

    Hey February 2010 Bandsters!

I am on clear liquids for two weeks-or as per the instructions. I have no problems swallowing. If you are expierencing any problems with swallowing, you should immediately call your physician. Most of the research i have seen where a persons has problems swallowing is because of the foods they are eating. I think 2 weeks was and still is too soon to eat solid foods--pureed or not. Again, this is based on the research that i have seen on various sites. here is a link which will offer you a wealth of information as to protein drinks as per the ""Bariatric dieting requirements" Bariatric Liquid Protein & RTD's For A Gastric Bypass Surgery Diet your local health food stores may have the items as well. I am terrified to eat any solid or mushed foods. I want to stay on the clear for at least two weeks and graduate to say --baby food texture. This will give the stomach time to heal and avoid regurgitation (i hope).

    Cigna Requirements For Vsg Surgery

I had Cigna *** and it covered my surgery. I had a BMI of 42.5 when the paperwork was submitted, I got the approval on Monday August 22 and had surgery Auguest 24. The approval for the surgery was all we were waiting on because all the other requirements had been meet. Here is an a passage from the Cigna policy: CIGNA covers bariatric surgery using a covered procedure outlined below as medically necessary when ALL of the following criteria are met: • The individual is ≥ 18 years of age or has reached full expected skeletal growth AND has evidence of EITHER of the following: ???? a BMI (Body Mass Index) ≥ 40 ???? a BMI (Body Mass Index) 35–39.9 with at least one clinically significant obesity-related comorbidity, Also your surgeon must recommend the surgery and gives them the CPT Codes for the sleeve procedure. I had the codes for Morbid Obesity and Sleeve Gastrectomy in the letter of medical necessity from PCP. The only problem I had was Cigna had asked the surgeon' office for their clinical notes on me and there was some confusion on whether Cigan was going to calll or not. Cigna finally sent a fax and when the information had been provided I got approved in 2 days.

Lower Body Lift - Tips And Advice?

My first tip: Do NOT watch videos of this surgery on YouTube. My second tip: While watching videos of this surgery on YouTube, I found one by a doctor in California who was giving a presentation to other docs on this. He said that almost all of his bariatric patients are deficient in certain vitamins/minerals that are essential to healing, and most docs don't think to check for this. I had never heard of the things people were deficient in, so I don't think you'd find them in normal Vitamins. He puts them on a product called Pro Care prior to the surgery to boost their nutritional readiness. I found it online, and there are several products, including one for surgery prep. When I have my knees replaced this summer I plan to go on this for a few weeks prior. Please let us know how your surgery goes!

    Anyone from Jacksonville???

I am SO sorry to hear this! I was hoping that maybe you would be on the road to getting your band. I'm not sure where you are located but I am using Dr.'s Marema and Koppman with US Bariatrics in St. Augustine. They operate out of Flagler Hospital which has EXTREMELY nice facilities. They are VERY thorough and responsive. If I send an email I typically get a response with 24 hours. I have been very pleased with them so far (even though I haven't had my surgery with them yet). A co-worker of mine had her sleeve done with them and has been nothing but happy with them. Dr. Marema has been listed as one of the best bariatric surgeons in the country. I highly recommend them. Please keep us posted.

    Chronicles of Cloe!!!!!

Yeah, unfortunately a lot of people....even a lot of doctors don't even KNOW about the lapband. For instance, my obygn who I see for PCOS...didn't know about it and was stunned that they did this. He was interested though and I gave him all the info for his brother; as he said it is something that maybe his brother should look into. It is sad really...because if the docs don't know about it, how can they adequately explain all the options to a patient of theirs who may perhaps like to undergo bariatric surgery....ya know?
  7. At least if there are serious complications, the procedure can be reversed; lap band removed & you're on your way. Can't say that once 75% of your stomach is removed, or your digestive system has been rewired. My surgeon is not a huge fan of the band, either. I don't know that many bariatric surgeons are. But even with all of its potential ongoing problems, it's STILL less risky than the other options. I remain hopeful.....

    Why Mexico?

Can I just say something without the risk of people jumping down my throat? People post over and over about the dangers of Mexico, but until you've gone to one of these border cities you really have no idea what you're talking about. I just returned from my surgery in TJ 3 days ago. NOT ONCE did I feel afraid or threatened in any manner, and myself and some of the other bariatric patients took a walk 5 blocks down the road to the shopping mall and spent a few hours there shopping without a guide...and surprise! I felt just as safe there as I do walking around my suburban neighborhood in the midwest. In any larger city there's going to be crime, that's just a fact of life. But that's because ALL cities have good and bad areas. It isn't like you're going down there to score drugs or get involved in a life of crime, so the odds of people coming after you are incredibly low. In fact, did anyone ever stop to think about the fact that only the bad stuff is put onto the news? I found the people of Tijuana to be wonderful and extremely helpful. If I had to make the choice again whether or not to go to Mexico, I would do it in a heartbeat. I feel like threads like this one scare people who are pre-op and make them unnecessarily nervous prior to having a rather invasive surgery. So please, if you're just basing your opinions on what "you've heard," try to put yourselves in the position of people heading across the border to get the surgery that will likely save their lives. I know I was terrified prior to crossing the border, primarily from things I heard on this forum from people who had in fact, NEVER crossed into Mexico via car, or visited a border city period. Just my two cents.

    Hey February 2010 Bandsters!

You were totally right. I changed to the bariatric advantage shakes and no more tummy aches and problems! Thank you so much for the advice, I was miserable!
  10. Crap, I wonder if Jill knows that the file is messed up. I'll shoot her a message on OH since she isn't a member here, and find out if she can repost or fix it. Centrum Complete with Iron Twinlab Daily with Iron Bariatric Advantage with Iron GNC Solotron Chewable with bioavailable iron (I take this one, and it was right up with the Centrum, and was pretty close to some of the others listed on the chart that were higher) I considered switching to the Twinlab multi with Iron but a few others said they were huge pills. Not my thing, so I've stuck with my Solotron with bio iron, and have never come up deficient in any of my labs. I did request to have my copper, zinc, and selenium ran this last time since Jill pointed out that my GNC vit doesn't have those, but my levels were normal as were all my Vit A, B, C, E and D, and D3. My vit b and b12 were perfect. So, I'm not going to fix something that's not broken. These are the top ones off the top of my head. I'll try to track Jill down on OH, and get the info back to y'all.

    Chronicles of Cloe!!!!!

Argon - no I'm not Canadian but I was raised in Northern Minnesota LOL I've lived in PA for the past 25 years and no I'm not banded YET but Dr. Kim Marley from Windber, PA will be doing my surgery. I've met him twice and he seems very kind and compasionate (cute as a button too) I've heard and read good things about him. Most people in my area go to Pittsburgh for bariatric procedures - but I feel comfortable with Dr. Marley

14Pk Of Syntrax Nectar Samples For $14 (Free Shipping)

I just placed an order at 866-333-7403 and got the 15pk for $15 and $1.99 s/h also Christine I am super excited to finally try other flavors & another brand because I've been buying Inspire brand from Bariatric Eating for over $32 and only 20 servings in a ziplock bag. So, I go thru about 3 bags a month ughhh! Pricey! I haven't tried many of the other brands except long ago I used Designer whey but that was nearly 15 years ago! Things in the Protein world have changed especially now since I've decided to have Roux En-Y next month the surgeon insists I only have whey protein isolate NOT whey protein concentrate since it doesn't absorb well!! I want to find where to talk about the supplements we need to be getting also! Have a great day everyone!

    Smoking After Gastric Sleeve Surgery

I agree that people will stop when they are good and ready. I was a very heavy smoker for 20 years and tried numerous times to stop before i eventually did. Before that, I was fed up of people telling me i should stop, I already knew that! People can look up the risks and make up their minds. Well done to those of you who managed to stop, good luck to those who want to stop but haven't managed it yet. I found this: http://www.emaxhealth.com/1024/smoking-increases-risk-complications-bariatric-surgery It talks about complications up to 14 months post op in smokers.

    sleevers in Chicago southland

Surgery set for next Friday 8/31!! Hospital has to confirm in the morning but it should be good. So excited! Not however excited about the gas and other effects (ahem) of the Bariatric Advantage meal replacement powder. It's going to be a long 8 days...
  16. Thanks Nicks mom :-). I'm getting nervous. As far as the pre-op diet ugghhh. Honestly it was hard for me. I only lost 11 pounds over the 14 days so far. It seems like it should be more after drinking only liquid. The Kane center tells their patients to use Bariatric Advantage. I thought the vanilla was sickenly sweet, but the give shake recipes that help. Example: 4oz of diet orange soda, mandarins oranges with the juice drained and 2 scoops of the protein powder blended with ice (was my fav). It's nice to hear from others in my area keep in touch.

    sleevers in Chicago southland

I'm interested in finding a support group in Chicago or within a drivable area. Surely there are more sleevers here! It seems like the support groups in the area are through the bariatric physicians who do them. I'm self-pay, Mexico.

    Anyone From Nc?

I have BCBSNC. I called them before starting this process and was told I only had to have 6 mth of documented weight loss attempt. But it did not have to be submitted to insurance only my dr had to approve it. And this is what my policy states. My pre-op coordinator said the surgeon accepted my WW log because it was about 9 months straight within 2 yrs. So after going through all tests, etc. my file was turned over to the insurance coordinator for filing. She emails me the next day and says she cant submit without my 6 mths supervised visit & if I dont have it, I need to get started. I explained my policy doesnt require it only requires that my dr approved whatever I did and pre-op said dr approved it. She said she has been doing this a while and even if dr "approves" it doesn't mean insurance will, but she will submit "as is" if I request. I can't do 6 months supervised now because my policy renews June 1 & my deductible etc will apply all over again. We met our out of pocket is the only reason I can have to now. So it was submitted Friday. We will see. I hope she doesn't mess it up. Is bcbs asking for you to have 6 mths documented?JWow1 I just had my consultation with the surgeon's office on the 28th I had about 8 months of attempts but was told per my insurance a 6 month supervised diet is apart of my requirements. My first of 6 appointments will be on the 25th of February. One thing my coordinator told me is that it has to be a consecutive 6 months if you miss a month you have to start over. To come this far and have met your oop max I really hope they will accept your attempts. I hope so too! We'll see.

Hey there Divalicious! I'm not sure about the date thing - I talked to Kindra at the support group meeting and she said that they would submit my packet as soon as they got the written report from the head doctor even though I haven't completed all my prerequisites yet. I don't know if that means BCBS will go ahead and approve and then they will just submit all my other stuff when done or what. I know that the Riverside Group is a BCBS center of excellence for bariatric surgery so maybe they kind of work together more on this than normal. I just thought I would try to get them to give me a possible date to aim for! So sorry that you are having to go through this process again - don't let anyone talk you out of it this time - this is your life and you have chosen to give yourself the gift of a better life with better health. i'm here if you need me!

Why am I still obsessed with food?

I struggle with this as well. For me, it's a sign of a role that food is playing in my life that has nothing to do with nutrition. I might get away with it for now, but long term it's going to be a problem, and I need to address it. From time to time I find myself getting too obsessed with food blogs - even if they're bariatric-friendly recipes, too much focus on food is going to lead me to overeating, or eating the wrong things, and I have to just stop. Too much time spent grocery shopping is an indication I'm probably using food for entertainment, or as a distraction - time to figure out what I really need. With my history with food, I know I can't afford to ignore it if I want to be successful in maintenance.
