    Alcohol?

Hi! I was instructed by my NUT that alcohol has to be away for atleast a year after surgery. They say it really can be a big issue for your sleeve and is empty calories. What about a virgin margarita?
  2. I had my surgery 5 weeks ago this Tuesday. I am going to dinner for my birthday next weekend and want to have a margarita. How long did everyone wait until after their surgery before they drank any alcohol?? I will also email my surgeon Monday to ask him... but just wondering?? THANKS!!
  3. On my two month anniversary I wanted to give an update and share some of my experiences. Month 2 was very different than month one. The lesson I learned was that if I want this journey to result in weight loss, I'm going to have to DIET. I might have secretly hoped that this surgery was magical and that the gastric plication gods would bestow upon me a brand new body in a matter of weeks but I knew better. The first month was easy weight loss as i couldn't get over 700 calories a day while only drinking or eating soft food. After 6 weeks I could eat more regular food. The surgeon told me that I would only be able to eat 2-4 oz at a time and he was right. I do feel hungry every 2-3 hours and that requires more calories. I was stuck at 213 for about two weeks so I decided to track my calories with the myfitnesspal app. OMG, mystery solved, I was eating/drinking 1600+ calories a day and more (who knew alcohol was 70 cal an ounce and protein bars can be 300 cal each). When you eat small amounts, they can add up! I moved the scale down 5.5# within 5 days by making better choices and staying under 1200 calories. Do I feel restricted? YES. Do I feel deprived? NO. Do people I eat with know I'm different? NO. Do I feel normal? YES. Do I miss my old stuff-your-face lifestyle? NO. Do I exercise? NO. Would I do it again? ABSOLUTELY! I can eat everything but to give you an example of restriction, I can only eat 1/2 to 3/4 of a lean cuisine entree, depending on the density but I can eat almost a whole can of clam chowder soup. I can only eat 3 pieces of a sushi roll and if I wait 20 minutes I can eat a fourth. I can drink as much as I want (just not with food) and a half bottle of water will take away my hunger for 30-45 minutes, sometimes more. When I feel really, really hungry, it usually means I need to burp. 5 hours without food is my limit, so I have to plan accordingly. Watching other people eat large quantities of food does not make me wish for my old stomach back, it makes me ill. So, grand total I've lost 42 pounds, 22 since the surgery two months ago. For me, the plication allows me to DIET comfortably. In the past 1200 calories would have been serious deprivation, today, 1200 calories is comfortable. They say you shouldn't diet, you should make a lifestyle change. I feel this surgery allowed me to make a lasting lifestyle change.

My Dr. said 6 months too. I was a VERY social drinker. My coworkers even asked me why I wasn't coming to Happy Hour on Fridays anymore. Then the they noticed the weight, so they assumed I was just dieting. I'm going to stick to the 6 months no alcohol and have my first drink after school on the last day before summer break. Hopefully I will have reached my goal by then and celebrate!

    Alcohol Post Op

The Bariatric Nurse in my Dr's office advised us to wait at least 4 weeks. The Doctors instructions said one year, but I only believe its because of the fact that alcohol effects us a lot faster. I am having a couple of sips of a apple martini tonight.....I did not have my first real alcohol beverage until my 30th Bday so needless to say I can not hold my liquor so therefore I will be a sipping betty. I worked all day to get in my protein, nutrients and vitamins so I am okay w/a few empty calories.

I believe that my surgeon likes to try to avoid crossover addictions, which is why alcohol is such a no/no under his program.

I'm a drinker, and I waited ~ 3 months. When I say drinker, I mean a couple times a month, not alcoholic-type. I have drank whiskey, white russians (getting the protein in with the milk, you know), vodka... etc. Never been a beer drinker, and I wouldn't be surprised if I never drank another beer. Be aware, your tolerence is waaaaaay down. I used to be able to drink about as much as I wanted and still be completely functional. No more! a couple drinks and I'm feeling it.

Personally, I don't believe in the NO-FOREVER list. I mean, unless one is an alcoholic, why the heck not? I'm not a drinker, but I like one occasionally. I certainly take the Eucharist every Sunday and have been since 2 days post-op. I think the no soda forever is BS as well. Yeah, like it's going to pop my sleeve. I can burp ya know. The upper esophageal sphincter works just fine thanks.

    Alcohol Post Op

My doctor's told us that drinking alcohol is a no no. They reported that our stomachs are greatly reduced and is absorbed at a much faster rate and that people have died with WLS from drinking alcohol. Now was this a scare tactic or what? I don't want to risk it. But on the other hand, I might take a sip here and there. Why not?

There are two answers for this. Medically, your nurse practitioner is correct. Emitionally, why go down that path? Alcohol is a slider with nothing but empty calories. No nutritrional value at all. I'm like you, 2 or 3 times a year I would socially drink. I think I waited a year and was almost to my goal weight before I allowed myself to have a drink. I didn't want allow anything between me and my goal. But I'm probably a little overboard of this .
  13. ive never been much of a drinker. im the type that has a social drink 2 or 3x a year. when did you have your first sip of alcohol? when did your dr say it was ok? i asked my nurse practioner and she told me to wait a few weeks because my tummy just healed from a leak. i wasnt going to drink anyway but i was just curjous if i had an ok.

    Fab 40's shout out

Just got back from Florida on a mini-vacation. I was happy to still drop a few pounds even though my eating habits were way off the map. Not enough protien. I did not do my vitamins correctly. Ate over every meal and didn't eat at regular intervals. And I didn't get enough fluids. All the big meals we had I ordered an appitizer and couldn't finish it. Its funny, when I order an appitizer I get the "Is that all you want?" question. Or "we have that shrimp as a dinner too." I'm sure they look at this big, hulking guy and think "what the heck?" But the best part is when they come back and ask me if I need a box. It was hard mentally, however. As a lot of people in my situation, I associate food with fun, vacation, being social, etc.. And one of the fun things about vacations in the past was food (and alcohol). So there was a struggle there. But even if I wanted to over indulge my sleeve wouldn't let me. Feeling that "starting to get full" feeling and knowing that I will be very uncomfortable or even sick if I don't stop is a wonderful physical queue. In all, its good to be back at work, in a routine and eating everything I am supposed.

    I Have To Eat Out..again

Oh I can help here!! The first restaurant that I went to was a mexican restaurant and the folks on here gave me some great ideas. Order off the a la carte menu. Usually mexican restaurants have these. I got one cheese enchilada and a side of refried Beans. Went down perfectly and was enough food. I also had a couple chips and salsa, but it wasn't as satisfying as it used to be. Given your history, I'd avoid the celebratory margarita. Alcohol and sugar...bad mix on the sleeve (at least for me.) If your stomach can tolerate meat yet, you could try a chicken enchilada. And you probably want to stay away from the fried stuff. Regarding other restaurants. I used to be embarressed about not eating, and I too have a hard time asking to order off the kids menu or a half portion (I even have a card from my surgeon to present to the waiter/ress that says I had weight loss surgery and would can't eat the normal portion, but I haven't had the guts to use it.) I typically order something lite, eat what I can, and then just ask for a container to go (even if you aren't going to eat it later. Saves having to answer questions.) The hardest places I find to eat at are the bars that my husband and I used to swing by on the way home for an easy dinner. They have NOTHING that I can eat yet nor am I going to drink....so we really have just cut those places out. I guess that's just one change that we have made. My husband has been really supportive and hasn't asked me to go to any restaurants where I can't get anything to eat. But if he really wanted to go there, I would and then just make the best out of it. I always keep a small, lunch size cooler bag with me too with sleeve friendly Snacks, so if I do know I'm going to be in that kind of situation, I can eat ahead of time and then just order a cup of Soup or something to be social. Sorry for the long post, but I've been trying to figure this one out too. I hope this helps.

    Lap Band And Flight Duration

Who on earth told you that flights should be 4 hours or less? Whoever it was that is utter nonsense. Flying with a properly filled band is not an issue. Saline does not expand in the air - on the other hand if your band is empty the air in it can expand and is more likely to cause problems. I have flown long distance a number of times since I have been banded and have not had any issues. And by long distance I mean trips that consist of 3 flights over 24hrs with a total of approx 16 hours flying time. If you are concerned the best things to remember are. Stay hydrated (drink Water not alcohol) Stick to softer foods - you don't want to start sliming on a plane as the toilets would not be the best place to have to bring it up and you would go through a lot of airsick bags. Take your own drinks/snacks if you prefer and the airline allows it. Order a special diet (e.g soup) before you fly. If your band does feel tighter than usual then it should resolve when you land. Relax the band is not going to explode. However I cannot guarantee the same for breast implants if you have those! I have heard horror stories where people have had a deflated implant after their flight! I would take out travel insurance that covers your band as you want to be safe rather than sorry if for some reason you get stuck and need an emergency unfill. Plus it is always good to have cover in case your cases go on holiday to a different destination to where you are going! Hope you have a wonderful holiday. Just relax and enjoy it.

Psych Eval.. Maybe Too Easy. Your Thoughts?

Send the letter to your surgeon's secretary and see if that's sufficient. My psyche evaluation was a lot like yours except that my psyche told me that I WOULD be an alcoholic after surgery. I'm not. I think my psyche person needed the services of a good therapist more than I did! And, I actually see a therapist! LOL Don't be worried that the consult wasn't more extensive. Just be glad that you've jumped through one more hoop and it's behind you!

    Humiliated At Work Today! Omg!!!!!

I am about to get the LB in 2 weeks. I only told a few close folks, however, for everyone who got it at my very large establishment, there were always rumors, and people always will talk. Heck, even if you loose it without surgery, they will assume the lader. I am 33 as well, but will say that at this point in my life, I live for me and my family. Eating unhealthy junkfood, smoking cigs, alcohol abuse, whatever the addiction...any healthy tool that helps me change for the better is nothing to be embarressed about. In Fact, I praise anyone who wants to be healthy and take control of thier addiction. For the most part, ignorance fuels people thoughts and actions at time. Hold your head up, love yourself and be proud. Having the support of your family may or maynot have helped, just having a loving and supportive ear is important in times of despair.
  19. I got a 6 month rule for alcohol. Have a margarita! But without the tequila
  20. Kaiser has taught us that alcohol can kill us! So I have no desire to prove them wrong. I don't need to drink. I'm happy right where I am.
  21. As much as I hate this answer...my doctors encourage me to avoid alcohol for a year after surgery.
  22. My surgeon says no alcohol for a year. I know many people don't stick to those guidelines. I don't know that it would do physical harm, but I won't risk it for quite a while I don't think.

    Confused :(

this is really a worrisome post. you are about 15 lbs underweight. it is so common for a compulsive person to switch compulsions. I am a recovering alcoholic/drug user. I switched to food once I stopped using alcohol. this is soooo common. I think you have posted because you know this is not only about an unfill. please go to a shrink and work this out with a person you trust. you want to be healthy, both mentally and physically. I would like to pray for you if you don't mind.
  24. Hi Everyone! I'm at the very beginning of my journey, so please bear with me. I am 37, single, female, and I live in Doha, Qatar. Currently weigh 259 pounds. I have many reasons for wanting to have the surgery - mainly to improve my overall health, but a big reason for doing it is to improve my confidence. I've always been overweight and always been shy around strangers, but with the right people around me I was happy and outgoing and being overweight wasn't such a big deal. But - I had a major knock to my confidence about 18 months ago and since then things haven't been so good. I'm in a vicious cycle of desperately needing to meet new people, but being too embarassed about my size to have the confidence to join any new groups. So aswell as improving my physical health, which drastically needs an overhaul the psychological benefits will be equally, if not more important. I'm having my surgery done at the local hospital here in Qatar and I'd be really interested to hear from anyone else who's had their surgery done anywhere in the Middle East. So far, I've just had the initial consultation with the surgeon. The hospital adminstration and communication here is very bad, so even finding out how to get the appointment was a traumatic process! But - eventually I got to see a surgeon to discuss my options. The consultation was brief... I was weighed, told I was eligible for surgery, and given the option of Gastric Bypass or Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy. He told me to go away and talk to people who've had the surgery.... unfortunately there are no support groups for VSG in Qatar, so if you don't mind, guys - will you be my support group? But finally - I'm on the waiting list! The waiting list is 6-8 months, which suits me just fine. Time to mentally and physically prepare. In preparation, I'm trying to exercise every day - my reward for exercising every day is to treat myself to a massage at the weekend. If I skip a day I'm not allowed that massage, so it's a good incentive! I'm cutting down on the carbs, cutting down on smoking with the aim of giving up completely before surgery, and I'm trying to cut out diet pepsi! I hardly drink alcohol so that's not an issue. Is there anything else I should be doing? Any tips would be gratefully received! Next week I'm seeing the anaesthetist for pre-op assessment, then later abdominal ultrasound and then endoscopy, which I'm not looking forward to at all! I'd love to hear from any of you and share experiences x
  25. another fun idea is going to an arcade or something at the mall. that doesnt really involve food or alcohol.. i did this the other day with my daughters father and we had a nice time
