    Weight Loss Stall

On average stalls last 1-3 weeks, but I've had three stalls in the 40-odd day range. My longest stall I just recently got out of and it was 46 days and then I lost a pound and four days after that lost another. So while not common, they can last longer than 3 weeks. I doubt it will happen to you this early out and I'd venture to guess at most your stall may last one week longer before your weight loss kicks back up again. Sometimes our body just has to take time to adjust itself and sometimes it can take longer than we'd like. I know it's hard not to feel discouraged or question ourselves about what we're doing wrong, but as long as you follow your plan I'm sure the weight loss will kick back up again.

    Weight Loss Stall

I've stalled three times in the two months since my surgery. It happens and is just part of the journey. The weight is coming off - stay off the scale for a week and as others have suggested, up your calories and switch up your exercise. It will break.

    Anyone else terrified?

being nervous before surgeries is pretty common - and - you won't die. RNY has a 0.3% mortality rate - VSG is even lower (don't remember that one right off hand since I had the RNY). So you will have at least a 99.7% chance of making it through just fine. And you will. Those are outstanding odds -- better than hip surgeries, which they do all the time. weight loss surgeries have become very routine and are much safer than they were 20 or 30 years ago. You'll be fine!

    10 days post up---Dizzy?

This happened to me 1-1.5 weeks before surgery. I was on 2 BP meds. But maybe due to the weight I lost during the pre-op, or maybe due to the liquid diet (low sodium maybe).. my BP started to go super low (~90.60), I stopped both BP meds, and my BP went up to normal... Have you checked your BP?

    July 2021 Surgery People!

I'm so sorry that you're having difficulty losing weight after the surgery. There must be others that have had difficulty losing after surgery. I hope your doctor or nutritionist can give you more guidance in trying to figure out a way to help your progress.

    Weight Loss Stall

As long as you are only eating 700-800 calories a day as you posted, you definitely didn't waste your money. You will lose weight due to calorie deficit. Before surgery, I remember having a difficult time keeping under 1800 calories. I was a bad case of no control when it came to food before surgery. As others said, stalls are normal and your body is just adjusting. Changing up your diet is always good to try to, like upping protein as you said. It may be excess water weight.
  8. Can you tell us your weight & height? I always get an extra seat on SW. did you need an extender? I’ve been wondering about this.
  9. Is the 6 oz an actual weight or is it a measurement, i.e., 3/4 of a cup? If weight, keep in mind that 6 oz of chicken takes up less room in your stomach than 6 oz of popcorn, for an extreme example. As long as you're on track nutritionally, I wouldn't worry about being able to eat more than expected, because there's so much variation in surgical technique and individual anatomy. Just stop before you're stuffed to avoid stretching.

    Weight Loss Stall

I had my sleeve surgery on 8/26. I was 235lbs, now 180. My goal is 145 to 150. I've been bouncing around 180 for the past week or so. I have found that I will drop a pound a day for a week, then stall for a week or two, then drop a pound a day again for a week or so. It's super frustrating during the stalls, but my nut said it's totally normal. What I have found is that if I focus on bumping up my protein, the stall seems to break, regardless of calories. The protein shakes I drink are high in calories, so even if I'm eating 900 to 1,000 calories, but hitting around 80-90 grams of protein, my weight starts to drop again. Just my observation in my own body, we're all different. Try not to stress yourself out, it will come off. Sent from my SM-N976V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Weight Loss Stall

I would bump up on the protein (60-70) and get more exercise. 15 minutes is not enough in my opinion and what I was told by the Doctor. What I try to do is to get up and move every hour and get in atleast 1000 to 1200 steps 4 times a day followed by a walk after dinner. If you don't want to walk after dinner, then do some resistance bands or weights which helps as well. You can pick up a good set of resistance bands with all the accessories for 50 bucks or so.

    Hair Loss

Hi Cheryl, I started losing my hair quite quickly after surgery and I made sure that I reached my protein goals. My doctor advised that the surgery itself can trigger hair loss in some people and then it can continue due to the rapid weight loss. I’m 8 months out now and thankfully my hair has stopped falling out and slowly seems to be coming back. I highly recommend using Nioxin shampoo and conditioner and Rogaine if you can. I have no regrets, even with the heavy hair loss. Good luck and hang in there!!
  13. Hey all. I'm almost 2 months post-op and find myself easily able to eat 6oz of food in one sitting (I'm comfortably full at the end of my meals - not "stuffed" or in pain - but nose a little runny). I'm freaking out because I've read that 6-8oz is usually not possible until 1+ years post-op, and that at this stage I should only be able to eat 2-4oz. I do track everything I eat (I average 750 calories a day) and I primarily eat whole foods (fish, beans, chicken, lentils, eggs, fruit and veggies). No dairy as I'm lactose intolerant and no breads, rice or pasta because they're too filling and provide little value in terms of nutrients when compared to the other things I eat. Not sure any of this matters in terms of volume, but I just thought I'd put it out there for reference. My weight loss has been very slow but steady. Is anyone else like this regarding how much they can eat in one sitting? Should I be worried?

    Weight Loss Stall

Hi everyone! I had Gastric sleeve in Mexico on October 28th and weighed 283. Today I weight 268. My weight has been 268 for 2 and a half weeks, I managed to get down to 266 Saturday but then went back up!. I’m not eating over 7-800 calories, take in a good amount of water, my protein could be better but I definitely hit at least 40 grams which is what was put to at least hit (40-60 per nutritionist). I move around and walk for at least 15-20 min. What is going on? Is something wrong with me? Did I pay 4500 for nothing? I’m very depressed and thinking I’ll never lose weight. I eat a variety of food I don’t limit anything but it’s all home food not eating pizza and stuff. I eat grilled chicken tenders, sweet potatoes whole wheat toast boiled eggs veggies yogurt all healthy and no more than 4-5 bites per meal. I’m very very depressed that even a surgery can’t help me lose weight.

    Help

Like Viking Beast said, although it was counterintuitive, when I increased calories I lost more not long after weight loss surgery, The nurse explained when your body thinks it’s starving it holds onto what it has. She said it’s common; also, when you do start losing again you may lose at a faster rate. It all evens out. I ‘m about 8 months out and just barely over the weight I’d like to stay at. One week I gained one pound. I didn’t freak out. The next week I lost about a pound more than usual. It’s a process. Eight weeks is still early out and your body is getting used to it’s new normal. You’ll get there!!!
  16. I was at a CVS and the automatic doors got stuck half open/half closed. I was able to fit through to get in. I would not have been able to even a year ago. I had gotten down to 141 pounds for a long time then became an alcoholic and gained back 40 pounds. 1 year ago I went to rehab and have been sober since. I have lost 52 pounds so am down to 135.4 pounds. My lowest since the WLS. My surgeon's goal weight was 135. I want to be at 125 I think.

    Help

Stalls are extremely common. The first usually starts in week 3 but can be earlier or later. They usually last 1-3 weeks. And yes I said the first stall. Many experience more as they progress. I liked to look at a stall as my body needing to take a breath. It’s been going through a lot: surgery, change of diet, restricted calories, etc. & it’s stressed. So just like when you’re experiencing emotional stress & you want to shut the door & pull the covers over your head your body shuts down too & you don’t lose weight. Best advice is to stick to your plan. You’ll slowly be eating more & more dense food anyway as you progress through the stages. If you are concerned have a chat with your dietician about your calorie intake especially if you’re very active again already. If not losing upsets you, avoid weighing yourself everyday. The stall will break when your body is ready. Good luck.
  18. Admittedly I have been more sedentary than i ever was. Couple that with feeling awful from GERD and depressed about the weight gain, I have been spiraling for awhile now. My sleeve was very successful and I even if I only gain the benefit of my GERD being gone, it will be worth it. My doc doesn't want me on omeprazole any longer. You are only 8 days out of surgery...are you feeling ok? I assume you are still on liquids. Keep in touch.
  19. You will do great. The medical reasons are the most important but I won't lie... having another bite of the weight loss proverbial apple makes it a win/win. Keep in touch and let me know how you are doing with recovery. I will join you on Dec. 2nd. Take care.
  20. Had sleeve surgery June 2010. Like you, I lost down to exactly 132. My husband and daughters were alarmed because I could STOP losing. My goal was 150. I started adding higher caloric foods and gained to 145, I like that 5 lb pad. I maintained at or below goal for eight years. I have arthritis in my hips and after we left the Dallas area, I don't have the big malls to go to. I used to go and walk, no power walking, just window shopping, but I did it quite a bit. We also had a 2-story house and I'd purposely go up and down the stairs more than I needed to. Here I am, severe reflux and a hiatial hernia. I have regained a little over 40 lbs. Revision surgery is this Friday. I hope surgery will fix the medical problems and hopefully I'll drop 25 lbs!! Good luck!!

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Hi there, can you tell me more about moving from weight to volume? I still use weight when home. Quick question based on your question. How did you choose the volume amount? Sounds like it might be too much which may be why you have so much leftover. Maybe cut back the volume some since you are finding it's more food than you need. I was scared to eat beyond the initial feeling of full. So, I still stop eating as soon as I feel it, regardless of how much I still have. I just put the food back or save it. I'm still weary of overeating so I just stop whenever I feel that sensation. Good luck!

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

UPDATE: So I had my 6 month check up with my surgeon today. He was happy with all my progress and says that I'm ahead of the game despite being in a current stall and not having lost anything since October 25th. He said he feels it has all to do with my hormones being wacky right now and expects I will start losing again soon. Although he did say that I should still keep an eye on my water intake and diet to make sure they aren't the culprit or contributing in any way. Told him about my hair loss and he said it will eventually stop and for now to add in more protein. That that should help greatly. He said I could try biotin but in his opinion, he doesn't really think it works. I told him I agreed because I used to take it years ago and didn't notice any difference either. At least for me. He told me my numbers were excellent! And he particularly was happy to see my Vitamin D levels. He said that is almost always an issues with all his patients and that I am actually an odd one when it comes to that as my level is perfect. LOL I said I guess it's the good vitamin I'm taking that has me good with everything. He said yes, and to keep taking it. We also discussed the missed periods and he thinks that's also due to the large amount of weight loss/hormones. Especially since I am not peri-menopausal or menopausal. And wouldn't you know it, a few hours after seeing him I finally got it. SMH So that's that. All seems ok still. Just gonna wait on this period to come and go and HOPEFULLY some more weight will drop.

    GYM AFTER SURGERY? LIFTING WEIGHTS?

I was made to walk immediately after surgery (within an hour of coming out of the recovery room). For two weeks I was on walking only, but no restrictions as to hills or stairs. At my two-week follow-up visit I was cleared for anything that did not require weights or abdominal tension. So I could run, bike, and jump rope, but I couldn't row or do sit-ups. I was also allowed to go from 10 to 15 pounds weight max which allowed me to use a training barbell for some exercises. At six weeks the restrictions were lifted. I spent 2-3 weeks getting back into things and trying to discover where my strength was (there's some loss but not as bad as I feared), and now at ten weeks am back into it, both manual labor as well as CrossFit.

Stalls do happen. If you don't lose any weight in three weeks, talk to your team. It is also possible that you are eating too few calories—I was, I stalled, my new nutritionist bumped me up, and the weight started slipping away again. How many calories are you eating per day? Are you getting enough protein? Enough liquid? Are you exercising at all?
