Hello! I got banded 7 days ago and I am down from 292 to 272 - 20 pounds in 7 days. I am following a simple food plan right now... typically protien shake blended with Fiber Bran Cereal in the morning, bean Soup for lunch and egg salad with light mayo for dinner...and Water or decaf tea all day. So I am not starving myself, but definitely a drastic reduction from the pre-surgery days. Is a kind of drop (20 lbs in one week after surgery) unheard of?

Am I loosing too much too fast?
UpperWestSide replied to joshNyC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think most people seem to have a 1 to 2 week pre-op diet of protein shakes. Some have some lean meat added for dinner but my Dr. said only some veggies. I see you were at Lenox Hill. I was at NYU and everyone there goes for the more restrictive pre-op diet. That is probably why you ae losing so quickly. I would not worry about it. it will slow down. -
Good words! My surgeon does 2 weeks pre-op liquid and then 10 days post op THIN LIQUID before moving on to mush. The 2 week pre-op was so hard when I was doing it, but I will tell you that I have 3 days left on my THIN LIQUID and I am going out of my mind. We banded people are willing to sacrifice in order to be healthier, skinnier, etc. These short term diets are part of that sacrifice. I agree, cry if you have to.

Exercise Routine Post-Op
WhoKnows replied to brendaliz_r's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
At about five weeks post-op I started going to a fitness club to lift weights and I haven't looked back since. I lift three days a week. My goal right away was to build muscle volume to give my skin something to hang on to as I lose fat, so I started lifting heavy right away (I had no surgical complications and I healed very well). I do cardio too, but weights are the priority. My body fat is way down, and I'm also about a size smaller than I was the last time I was at this weight, which makes sense since muscle is heavier than fat. I feel great! Definitely don't skimp on the weight training! -
I was told the wait for your first fill is a minimum of 5 weeks post-op. Carol

Hi Megan and welcome to LBT! Congratulations on being banded! I was banded 3 weeks ago and am doing well. I did have my share of gas pains though. The things that really helped were gasx, walking, and the heating pad. I am also a nurse. I work at Hasbro Children's Hospital in RI. Best of luck to you! Keep us posted on your recovery-Gigi

Almost a week Post Op: not lost a single pound?
Bufflehead replied to Mjohnson4631's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are still bloated up from all the fluids you were pumped full of in the hospital, plus your body is recovering from trauma. Weight loss isn't a race -- stay off the scale for a while if it is going to stress you out. Stalls happen frequently even when you are following your program perfectly. Stress isn't good for weight loss, so let go of the idea that weight loss will happen with mathematical certainty and that you should be regularly stepping on the scale and seeing the number plunge down. You will lose the weight if you follow a good program, but it won't be predictable or smooth! -
Almost a week Post Op: not lost a single pound?
Mjohnson4631 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How is it possible to be eating nothing and drinking a couple Protein shakes for so long and not lose a single pound??? LOL... Ok; so I'm 5 days PO almost a week and my daily intake consists of 2 Protein Shakes and around 50 oz of Water. That's all I can seem to take in so far. I have been walking also. I do think I'm bloated and have bad gas pain right now. But I'm just curious how can the body go so long and not budge? From the start of my two week liquid diet up till surgery I lost about 8 or 9 lbs. day of surgery I weighed 275. I weigh 274.6 today.. I now it hasn't been long I'm just freaked out that I haven't even lost a pound in almost a week of basically nothing . How long till the scale moves? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful! I'll behind you in a few weeks....

I think I am going to ask for a 1cc to be taken out. For a couple of reasons. One, So I can get more of what I am eating now in (high quality, nutritious foods) And two, I am having my TT next week, and I am still not convinced, despite my GP, Band Doc, and PS telling me I will be ok with my fill post op... My band tightens up with PMS, so I cannot imagine what swelling from PS will be like (I was assured by all three doc's that I would be ok to leave my fill in, because I will be in the hospital that George Fielding built his banding practice in, so they know all about bands) So, yeah. I have made up my mind to ask for a little unfill on Thursday. Thanks Jacqui, and Anaed2.

So I was banded Dec. 27th, 2010... I can't believe I can actually say that I am banded, it's an amazing feeling! I've been doing great, that long 6 month period of me having to wait and go through stupid supervised diets and all of that finally paid off, I so far have lost 27 pounds. It's not as hard as I thought it was going to be. I am staying away from all the foods that I don't need. And trying my best to stay with the foods that I need. Trying to get all the liquids I need. I get my first fill on the 26th, so in about 2 weeks, and that's exciting in itself. All the hard times where people were eating in front of me, or whatever, I pulled through by myself. It's hard it really is, but if I can do it, anyone can! I can't wait to get out of the 200's, it's going to take a few more months, but I just can't wait! I know it's going to be an amazing feeling!!

Okay people - How about checking in and telling everyone what's going on right now? I'm feeling a little stronger each day (I think ), but am tired. I'm not doing much at all except for walking. Otherwise, I am in my recliner watching TV and playing on the computer. I'll be off work for this week still. I find myself thinking about food a lot even though I am not hungry, especially pizza. Don't see my surgeon until the 15th. I basically feel good except for the spasms I get, and soreness. Is anyone back to work? How's eating? Are you getting a lot of rest? Please tell me what's happening!! Hugs to all. Joni

I did something similar. I didn't eat massive amounts of food, but I did eat every single thing I thought I would miss after. However, Traci is absolutely right - you are not prohibited from eating anything. You just can't eat the quantities you used to. For me, I do get hungry. I also miss being able to eat a large volume, however, I'm praying that will change. I do find myself tempted, but then I remember that my stomach can hold so little, that I better make it worthwhile. I have had every one of my food weaknesses offered to me over the past 3 weeks, and I looked at them, knew I was allowed to eat them, but just decided not to - why open the door to foods that landed me in this spot in the first place? I'm not a food lover - I'm a junk-food lover. It was a road to obesity and diabetes. I'm now on the road to weight loss and glucose control. I'm not mourning the loss of food at all, and I hope you don't either.

Hi, Im new to all of this (second fill) and I never relized how much extra time i would have on my hands after I stopped over eatting. I dont know what to do with myself anymore. Sometimes I feel like a trapped animal. Last weeking I almost broke down in tears from boredom. Im too overweight to do a lot of activities that I would like to do and I have discovered that almost 100% of my interaction with family and friends takes place over some sort of eatting event. What do you guys do to burn time? I have been to the zoo, but it was so hot that I was miserable. I've gone shopping way more than I can afford. Now what? I live in San Antonio and I looked for a LAP-BAND® support group here in town but couldnt find one. I've even thought of trying to start one, but Im not sure how to go about it.

First "delay" - Surgeon All Booked Up!
LadyPol posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I met with my surgeon back in September, not long after I began my 14 week insurance required prep program. At that time, he told me that there should be no problem getting the surgery scheduled in December (which would be nice financially, as we have met our deductibles for the year). Fast forward to this week .. my 14th week of the program. Called the scheduling person to mention again that we were hoping for a December date and she informed us that Dr. is booked through to the end of January. I had been mentally preparing myself for an end of December date and now it looks like it will probably be in February or so....pending insurance approval. Not a big delay or issue ... just a small disappointment and rearranging of the thought process. Continuing to read here on OH and learn everything I can! Blessings! -
8 Months Post Op
dylanmiles23 replied to enjoylifediana's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wish you a lot of luck. I hate breakfast foods so I have been drinking shakes for breakfast since March and was just banded 2 1/2 weeks ago. Because of the shakes before my surgery I lost 28lbs. Since the surgery I am down another 13 lbs. Remember the Band is a band aid and not a cure. We all need help. I don't eat when under stress. I eat when bored. One thing that helps is putting clear polish on your nails. It takes 20-30 minutes to dry and by then you forget about the food. That has worked for me in the past. Have a great weekend. -
New weight loss device
Miss Mac replied to KittyCathy22's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had not heard about this concept for appetite control, but in a couple of weeks I will be having surgery to have a spinal cord stimulator implanted to help control severe leg pain coming from vertebrae L1-L2. The method is the same as you described. The device emits a signal of its own to interfere with the pain signals the affected nerve is sending to the brain. It is interesting that this process is being explored for appetite control. It would still be surgery. I will have two 4" incisions: one over my spine at L1-L2 and one over my right hip to implant the device in a pocket made under the skin. I am glad that the research is out there for finding options to removing a majority of one's stomach. I am glad to have my sleeve, but this would have been an interesting option, too. -
Would you have one again??!!
IndioGirl55 replied to UKLass's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was quite set on doing it until I read of all the complications everyone has had!! DARLING NOT EVERYONE HAS COMPLICATIONS - I HAVEN'T HAD A ONE (THANK GOD) IT IS VERY INDIVIDUAL - YOU AND I CAN BUY THE SAME CAR - YOURS IS A LEMON MINE IS GREAT - STUFF HAPPENDS YOU CAN WALK OUT YOUR FRONT DOOR AND GET HIT BY A TRUCK TOO.. I wondered if you could help me answer a few questions about Lap Banding to help me make up my mind? 1) Would you do it again if you could reverse time? YES IN A HEART BEAT 2) Does everyone have such bad pain after the op? NO IT'S THE INDIVIDUAL - I HAVE READ THAT SOME HAVE GONE BACK TO WORK THE NEXT DAY - I WAS BACK AT WORK ON DAY 6 (DESK) 3) How long would I need to take off work after the op? THAT'S UP TO YOU - YOUR AGE TYPE OF WORK YOU DO - I TOOK OFF 4 DAY I'M 52 i HAD SURGERY ON A TUES AND WAS BACK TO WORK ON MONDAY 4) Does everyone have problems with bad breath, dry wretching, nausea, vomitting, leaking ports etc? NOPE NOT EVERYONE HAS THESE PROBLEMS - I HAVE PB BUT THAT'S MY FAULT FOR EATING TOO FAST OR NOT CHEWING meat REAL WELL. 5) Why would you have an 'emergency unfill'? CUZ YOU ARE TOO TIGHT IT CAN TAKE UP TO 2 WEEKS FOR A FILL TO TRUELY SET IT'S SELF 6) Has anyone had one in Belgium or Prague I DON'T KNOW - WE HAVE A GIRL FROM IRELAND IN MY GROUP 7) Can anyone recommend a good surgeon / clinic in the UK? THERE IS A UK THREAD I SUGGUES YOU LOOK THERE 8) Does it really help much more than trying to restrict portions yourself? IMHO IT IS BOTH 75% OF THE WORK IS UP TO YOU BY MAKING HEALTHY food CHOICES AND ADDING EXERCISE IN YOUR LIFE AND 25% IS THE BAND THAT CONTROLS YOUR PORTION SIZE - THIS IS NOT THE MAGIC CURE TO YOUR FOOD ISSUES... THE BAND DOES REQUIRE WORK ON YOUR PART GOOD LUCK.. -
Trying fruits and veggies after surgery
Susan66 replied to kjt1994's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At 4 weeks post op I am ok to have very soft cooked broccoli. I haven't had any fruit because I never have room for it during a meal. I honestly don't have any urge to eat in between meals at this time. I'm not sure how the skin of the grapes would set in my stomach and I think I would peel the cucumber before eating. -
I do 1/2 hot water, 1/2 steamed skim milk with earl grey tea a few times a week for breakfast - gives u the nice caffeine boost first thing in the morning, while getting your protein

You tube videos have me worried
kychick1294 replied to lynndtt's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The band isn't for everyone and I strongly suggest that you really research your options and what surgery would be best for you. I've lost about 20lbs in 2 years!! I'm completely annoyed with myself for picking the band so quickly. I lost 10 the first week and from there on its been a lose/gain battle. I worked the band to a tee for about 7 months.. If lose 3-4 lbs one week and gain it back plus 2 lbs the next. I was mentally and emotionally drained after it and just have up. Got all my fills and had good restriction but the weight just wouldn't come off.. Could not get lower than 320. I'm the kind of person who needs to see the number on the scale dropping.. If it doesn't I lose motivation. I'm trying to get approval for the bypass or sleeve as we speak. Now my neighbor lost 100lbs in 6 months, never has gotten a fill and eats all the fast food she wants... She doesn't exercise but her smaller portions did the trick. I have a serious food addiction so I need that fast weight loss to keel me going! Everyone's different so just do your homework!!! -
I've struggled with my weight since puberty. When I was younger, I was always in state of weight change - I was either losing or gaining. I never learned how to maintain my weight. I'm in my early 40's now and I have been losing and gaining the same 25 pounds for over 10 years. Like many of you, I have tried so many diets - Weight Watchers, Atkins, Jenny Craig (on which I gained weight), Slimfast. I've tried walking, Pilates videos, gym memberships. The only physical activity that I enjoy is swimming/water aerobics. I can stick to a diet plan, but not to an exercise plan. I have learned so many ways to talk myself out of exercising. In the recent past, I have had the most success with an appetite suppressant which my PCP prescribed. For many good reasons, he will not prescribe it for more than 3 months; nor do I want to be on a dangerous medication. I recently changed jobs and my new health insurance may cover WLS. Since I did well with the diet pills, I think that the Lap Band will be finally be a solution for me. If my physical hunger is under control, I can overcome the mindless eating due to boredom, the emotional eating, and stress induced carb binges. Next week I have a sleep study to confirm a diagnosis of sleep apnea. (My prior health insurance's meager contribution to that test had made it unaffordable.) The morning after the test, my husband and I are attending the WLS surgery seminar at Cleveland Clinic - Florida.

Give it time. Your body takes roughly 6-weeks to heal.

New weight loss device
Djmohr replied to KittyCathy22's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had a neurostimulator in my spine for 10 years and just had it removed in November. Mine was an older device that did not have rechargeable capability and given I had lost over 100lbs it was literally sticking out of my lower back, I got it stuck in the slats of a chair once didn't know it and tried to stand up. Ouch!!! Anyway, I wanted to respond because this device literally gave me back my life. I had severe nerve pain running down my leg following lumbar fusion surgery. We tried everything for 5 years and finally they offered me the neurostimulator solution. The first time we turned it on in the operating room it felt magical. The pain was gone and it felt like tiny littles champagne bubbles running up and down my spine and my leg. They work! It only makes sense that they could somehow use it to resolve the feelings of hunger. I do believe in order for long term success a person would still have to deal with head hunger, cravings and the underlying food addiction issues. I know even days or weeks after my RNY, I had head hunger that would make me want to go eat a cheeseburger. I had to learn how to deal with it. Obviously the same diet and exercise will be important as well right? Very interesting, thanks for sharing. -
So, today is the day I get to report my first NSV, and I haven't even had my surgery yet!! Yes, I'm gunna brag and I know y'all will love listening. I am pre-op, and I have been giving up some of my vices over the last few weeks in preparation for starting my liquid diet on 7/23. I am an emotional eater, I turn to food when I need comfort. Today was very challenging emotionally, and I did not turn to food for comfort! As bad as I wanted the ice cream, diet coke, doughnuts, candy, fried cheese and taquitos that I passed in the grocery store with my broken heart, I sassed my big ol booty right by that junk and left without buying any. Take that bad day! That is an NSV, right? Anyone else have NSV that happened pre-op? Happy losing, Slenderella
