    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi and Thanks for answering. I looked through all my papers I was given and funny I don't see anything about sodium but I could be over looking it. I did see where chicken and stars and cream of chicken was ok which I ate the first week minus the chicken in the soup. I felt kind of funny due to the carbs and sodium in it. Might be why I have only lost 3 pounds, 2 weeks tomorrow since surgery. I am not suppose to advance to solid foods till next week and actually the thought of anything solid even a egg doesn't seem possible. I am living on soups, greek yogurt, fat free cottage cheese and protein shakes. I did eat a half a can of the deviled ham yesterday but kinda felt like I was in a no no zone, lol. I am not a big drinker, so getting the 64 oz down is a real challenge, I am using crystal light as a helper.

Accountability Post .... Being honest with yourself

Hey we had surgery about the same time and I was thinking the same thing. I hit my goal weight and stalled…I’d still like to drop a bit more, but it hasn’t really happened. I want to take the month of March to really make sure that this is my “final weight”, and it’s not just where I landed because I loosened up my food plan. I want to start tracking this month, really cut down on snacking and get my evening time eating back to where I want it. So for me my resolutions are: I will track my food, even if it’s a guess on some items like dinners out. I get stuck on “well I don’t know how much this is so I won’t bother”, and I know that’s a cop out. I will make sure that snack food doesn’t get into the house- no nuts, Greek yogurt bars, chips, etc. I’ll keep up my current exercise routine Let’s have an awesome March!

    Two weeks out

Today is two weeks past surgery. Recovery has gone well with no complications. My surgery was a revision from sleeve to bypass for hernia and GERD issues. I've dropped 10+ lbs in the two weeks which seems right in line (I was only at 227 on date of surgery). Per my surgeon's plan today we could progress to soft solid proteins, so it was great to have an ounce or two of sliced deli meat for lunch. Only downside is that they do an internal stitch to hold things together and that pain is real. I'm told it'll go away 4-6 weeks following surgery but until then it's the only downside to an otherwise good recovery so far.

    Recovery time

I could take as much time as needed, my job would just compile into a complete mess the longer I took. 😩 My employer is aware of up to 6 weeks, I am just really hoping to be back in 2-3. High hopes!!

    Recovery time

Would there be a chance to get some actual leave? I would've probably been able to do it in 2 weeks, but man it was nice to get all my habits off to a good start by taking 6 weeks. Granted, I don't know much about the work culture in America, other than I do not wish to trade

    Recovery time

Goodness, I am REALLY hoping to be released back to work at my 2 week follow up. I would go crazy 6 weeks, work would be so horrible when I returned.

    Recovery time

Hey! Mine says 4 weeks for sleeve, 6 weeks for RNY and mini gastric bypass.

    Recovery time

Mine says 2-6 weeks, depending on recovery and how physically demanding your job is.

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi, I am new too. Had my surgery 2-16-22 and still confused about alot. Seems all surgeons are different and tell their patients different from what I am reading. I was told to advance to soft mushy foods yesterday 2-28-22 and prior to that it was anything I could drink through a straw but not to use a straw, but that included soup. Still though confused on what type of foods that are allowed now. We had a zoom meeting with many and I don't remember that coming up, other than the amount of protein we needed and that we could have chicken broth and chicken and stars the first week. So going thorough all my hand outs given but don't see anything about processed food such as campbell's soups other than no tomato soup. Wondering if things like canned deviled ham or deviled chicken is allowed? Does anyone know or a good resource?

    Milestones!

So excited for you! I just joined today and am loving the supportiveness of this group. Loved hearing you say "But as I’ve read on here, enjoy the journey. Don’t rush. Be patient. Be gentle." I definitely need ed to hear that. I was going to start last year on this journey, but got side tracked by Breast Cancer. All set now and ready to go. Starting pre-op diet this week. Causing me much anxiety. Gonna have LapBand from 2009 removed in about a month, then DS 3 months later. And I can fit my required dietician visits in during that time so it all seems to be lining up. Wishing you all the best. Candice

    Starting at 5'6. 351bls.

Having lapband removal in about 4-6 weeks. Then DS 3 months later. Then double knee replacement about 1 hr after that.

Going to start pre-op diet this week. Doing it for about a month before lapband removal. So scared to start it. Don't know why, but I have so much anxiety about not eating all day and feeling hungry. But I hear the shakes are filling.

    Dr Sanborn - Chattanooga TN

Hey! Just seeing this - didn’t get notification. So happy for you! How are you doing with surgery next week? I got in with Dr. Sanborn who was also nice and said I’m a candidate for bypass or sleeve so I’ll need to decide🤷🏽‍♀️. I’m 1/2 done with my pre op / insurance requirements. How long did it take to get you scheduled for the surgery?
  13. You should only be on liquids at 1 week out
  14. I know most of you are not doctors, but perhaps you can speculate about something that just happened to me. For the past year, I have maintained within a 3-4 lb range, never deviating. About six weeks ago, within three days I had gained seven pounds to my highest weight in about two years. I dismissed it as water retention because I hadn't changed my diet or any medications, but for the next six weeks I stayed five to seven pounds above my baseline, so I began dieting and drinking more water but to no avail. I couldn't figure out how it could be from food because I log calories every day and there were no changes in calories or types of foods that I ate. Then a few days ago, I had a horrible mood swing -- so bad a depression that my family and friends were really worried about me -- and they said they had never seen me act like that before. I recovered from it but the following day, I began vomiting out of nowhere, tons of water, something that has never happened before since WLS and was something I can't ever recall happening even before WLS. And then for these past few recent days, I'm exactly back to where I was for the entire year -- within that 3-4 lb range again. The five to seven pound gain is gone. I'm post-menopausal so it's not hormonal I think. No dietary changes. No new medications or getting off old ones. No changes in activities and exercise. The massive weight gain seems to have just "happened," remained in my body for weeks, then dispersed. And possibly could have caused a serious mood swing. Oh, and for an annual checkup I had an EKG which was normal so it has nothing to do with my heart. And I had a recent brain scan six months ago that showed no abnormalities. My blood work also is normal.
  15. Congrats to all on a fast and uneventful surgery. I'm almost 1 week out. Everyday is different. I'm very low energy but trying to stick with keto diet, at least in the beginning because I lose weight so slow normally. I have some health issues which aren't helping the low energy issue. Sometimes I'm surprised I'm hungry. I heard that generally in the first stages you aren't that hungry. The good news is having 4 oz of protein drink gets rid of the hunger. But its a good thing my refridge and pantry are emptied of anything I shouldn't be eating right now! I suspect I'm much older than a lot of people on this board.

    Advice on gas pain

Walking is best. Keep them short, a lap or two depending on the size of the ward, three or four times a day. I’d walk to the sitting room at the end of the ward, sit for a couple of minutes & walk back (Well I did until I stumbled upon the man in his badly tied surgical gown standing in front of the window so the sun shone threw the gown highlighting all his ‘attributes’.)Though you may find you spend a lot of that first 24-48 hours sleeping. Gas X helps too. Listen to your body if it says rest, rest. Congrats on your surgery & all the best for the rest of your recovery.

    Skin

according to your profile, you're hoping to lose about 150 lbs, so yes, you'll almost certainly have loose skin. Fortunately, most of us are able to hide it pretty well by the way we dress. I'm sure no one noticed mine (well, except my husband...). I originally lost 235 lbs, so I had a ton of it (I've since had it removed since it was driving me nuts, even though no one could see it). Honestly, I think I can speak for most vets who've lost 100+ lbs that we'd take the lose skin any day of the week over being morbidly obese again. ANY DAY!!!

    After Care

Congrats on your approval. Your medical team (surgeon & dietician) should provide you with a plan to follow pre & post surgery. It should detail what foods you can eat & when (what stage) & usually includes recommendations for portion sizes, your carb, sugar &/or fat intake, protein & fluid goals & calorie goals or combinations of these requirements. (Mine was only portion size & protein& fluid goals.) If they don’t ask for one & ask for the additional guidelines if you’d feel more confident with more guidance. Plans can be different surgeon to surgeon & it is always best to follow the plan you are given. Generally, in weeks 3 & 4 you are in the purée stage. You can purée most things with sufficient liquids (gravy, stock, milk, water, Mayo, etc.) to get them to a thick gloopy texture. Still more swallow then chew. In weeks 5 & 6 you are in the soft food stage. Think tender, fall off the bone slow cooked meats, minced meat dishes with gravies or sauces, thick meat & vegetable soups. More chew & enough liquid to lubricate & allow you to swallow easily. Your plan may be different. There may be foods in your plan you can’t tolerate as your tummy can be fussy at first & your taste buds &/or sense of smell can become temporarily sensitive. I’m not a regular exerciser - never really enjoyed it, never reached the euphoric stare people talk about. I walked in the beginning. Then did some resistance bands. Still do some general stretching every day. Doing standing push ups at the moment too. I do a lot of incidental activity: do multiple trips up & down my stairs (why do it in one load when you can do 2 or 3), park further away from where I’m going, walk up escalators & travelators, jog up stairs, etc. Plus my low blood pressure (70s over 60s) means I get tired & weak more quickly when doing anything more strenuous. Also can cause a hypoglycaemic episode. Not a lot of fun so I’m careful.

    Booty

Google is your friend. Stacks of exercises to tone your glutes available with a simple search. It can also be helpful to get a short program at a gym or with a person trainer to find out the best workout for you & to ensure you’re doing them correctly & not risking potential injury. Then you can do them at home. Can be a little pricy but sometimes they offer deals. You can pick up weights, resistance bands etc. pretty cheaply. I got my bands for $10 at Kmart in Australia. Remember you won’t be able to do a lot for a few weeks while your healing & recovering from the surgery. Walking will be your friend for that first month or so.
  20. I had stage 2 (lipo) done today. I'm feeling good. The leftover Percocet from stage 1 is a blessing. Dr. gave ok to use it instead of the typical prescribed Vicodin. I will probably have a small amount of loose skin on the thigh gap and love handle areas but nothing that a tiny nip/tuck won't take care of. I'll post pictures in a couple of months when most of the swelling is gone. As far as the TT recovery (7 wpo), I can now ride my bike; cough/sneeze/laugh without tearing up; but still no heavy lifting. I consider house cleaning heavy lifting (wink, wink) so I guess hubby will have several more weeks of maid duty. I was still wearing a compress garment 23 hours a day even though I don't have to wear it more than 12 hours. Dr. said the longer the better and I don't mind it since it's not summer yet. Now I'm back to wearing it 24/7. Dr. said plan on the scar revision this fall and my scar is healing nicely.

Hey everyone, I have some exciting news, I got approved for gastric bypass this past Monday and, my surgery date is next month on the 22nd. I was just wondering what kinds of exercises that you guys have done and that you've had success in achieving also, I do have PCOS so I was just wondering for my fellow cysters how much weight have you guys lost in 2-12 months and what was your weight loss each month. I was also wondering what types of food did you guys eat after 2 weeks like what could you guys tolerate and, very lastly what can I expect before, during, and after my surgery?
  22. Hi, I had my surgery February 17 and am in my two week liquid diet and starting to not like anything so it’s hard to get enough protein. Any tips? Thanks

Am I eating to much ?

We all lose at different rates. What does your doctor say about your rate of loss? If you truly are sticking to your plan you may be experiencing a stall which can last several weeks. There is nothing to do or change, the stall will pass.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Meg, beautifully stated. My big day is tomorrow o also am filled with a million emotions today….. I wish you all the best in your journey. I am just finishing my preop. I don’t think I cheated other than an extra ounce here or there of fish. I figure I’m going through all this don’t cheat! I’m already down almost 17 pounds in two weeks. I feel like one of my belts is gone. I’m very nervous about anesthesia due to my apnea … but once the surgery is over I can tackle the next obstacle… one at a time. Lots of xo to everyone going in March!

I love you for this reply! Thank you for telling me it is water weight, it probably is. I haven't had a good bm since then either. I am pushing fluids today and I have lemons at home that I will add tonight. Good luck on your diet, you can do it. I had cut out caffeine 2 weeks prior and sugar one week prior and I do believe that helped me to adjust without headaches or pain. Cheers to being in the 5'11 club!! We're gonna rock these healthy bodies in due time.
