    Anyone for October 2020?

    Hi Orchidlover Hopefully by now you've figured out how to get and stay back on track. How was Thanksgiving for you? I am also struggling and stopped losing, as a matter of fact I've gained a few pounds. I was in a really bad car accident in July which caused me to be home and not doing any exercising other than physical therapy. I have now restarted as of last week doing a little walking. I actually pushed myself yesterday to do a little more than walk slowly and I felt OK. I have been home since my accident. Prior to the accident I was losing but very slowly, I mean extremely slow. I still took it as a win cuz at least I want gaining. We have to take all our victory laps regardless. I especially do this because, I have been and still am dealing with back issues and being on steroids all the time didn't help me. I also have not been eating right lately. I find myself ALWAYS hungry and always snacking and not always on healthy stuff that'll be conducive to weightloss. We know what we're doing wrong, we have the tools to do what's right but we are so much in our heads when we get off track, it blocks us from clearly seeing those said tools that'll help us to get back where we know we can abs want to be. Let's start today by not doing the things we have been doing lately, whether it's eating badly or not exercising and making excuses why we're doing these things. Once we put our minds to doing it we can. you've done it before to be able to lose 100 pounds.. which is a huge deal, congrats on that. I have only lost a total of 58 pounds and that's over two surgeries. I have had major setbacks but I'm not giving up and I'm going to stop letting those things get in the way of my success to get to a 100lb loss. Fight for this, you got it and you know how to.     Hi Orchidlover - hope things are going better for you now. It's hard fitting everything in with full time work and I really sympathise. Try to think of your original goal and how well you've done already to lose 100lbs! That's a huge achievement. I think that all of us who have gastric surgery are going to have to treat the eating/exercise as a lifelong thing, and inevitably we'll slip at times. We just have to get back on track by prioritising our health over everything else. I know it's easy to say, but not always easy to do. My diet has definitely slipped and while I'm not putting on weight I'm definitely not eating right. As for exercise - I did well at first but now that's almost non-existent. You're definitely not alone in struggling but you can get back on track and do it!!

    Hi! I can empathise with that. People say - oh, you've lost so much weight, you look great - and then I think - so you;re saying how rubbish I looked before? Even people I don't really know like my dentist's receptionist! It's particularly irritating/upsetting when people make the same comment every time they see me. I also catch myself thinking about how much time/how many years I spent very overweight and unhealthy, which meant I felt self-conscious and insecure - and then I obsess a bit about how awful I looked for all of that time. I suppose we just have to try to put all that behind us and just look forward.
  4. Hi! I am 6 days post-op from the gastric bypass. I lost 14lbs so far which is super exciting since I can’t remember the last time I had lost this much weight. I am now drinking protein shakes and water but i am honestly struggling with that. I can’t seem to drink enough water or protein a day. It’s just that I get so incredibly full and I can’t seem to stomach anything more. I’m not pushing myself and i’m listening to my body but I don’t want to become dehydrated. Does anybody have any suggestions with how to drink more water and protein? Anything and everything helps!

    Anyone for October 2020?

    Hey everyone! Just wondering how you all were doing through the holidays. Given the pandemic, this was the first time I’ve seen my extended family since I’ve had surgery and lost a lot of weight. My family knew I had the surgery and they were very supportive, but the amount of comments I got on my appearance really hurt my feelings. Everyone was telling me how good I looked, and how beautiful I am, and I thought compliments like those would make me happy, but they didn’t. It was just a harsh reminder of how not beautiful and how not good I used to look. Is anyone else experiencing feeling like this? I’m so happy to be where I’m at, but I’m very insecure about my past appearance.

    Just had my first protein shake

    Try other flavors. I had good luck with Premier protein powder… it’s like $22-26 on Amazon cones several different flavors… I’m lactose intolerant so I mixed mines with almond milk. It’s an acquired taste lol but so worth it… you’ll drop that weight in no time and can have your surgery and start your new life. Best of luck to you 🤗

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    Hang in there.. Focus on your protein and water intake, up your exercise as much as you can (within the limits set by your Dr.).. if you are on puree phase, make sure the portions are the correct size/volume... I lost like 3 lbs by the time I got back from the hospital.. but after that... the weight remained constant for 10-12 days.. and then it started coming off.
  8. I had my surgery on the 24th and the surgeon used the DaVinci robot. Some things I didn’t realize before: * they tie up your arms over your head to get them out of the way * I had a small bruise on my wrist from the restraint * My shoulders hurt, not just from gas, but also that position. The muscles are seriously mad at me. Every time I try to lower myself into a chair, or get out of bed it makes my shoulders hurt super bad. * I have a mystery cut on my upper arm that I haven’t had a chance to ask the surgeon about. Looks like they fixed it up for me. I’m guessing my skin got pinched (I have loose skin there from losing weight and it’s paper thin and tears easily). All of my incisions are incredibly small, maybe less than 1”. None of the incision sites hurt, or are bruised or swollen. There ended up being 5 incisions. One just under my chest, another next to my belly button, then three on my lower abdomen. The surgery took 2 hours for a SADI. I was in terrible pain post op, it took several days to get a handle on it. Luckily they were fine with giving me whatever I needed to make the pain stop, as often as needed. I have stage IV endometriosis so some of the pain was probably from my adhesions too. So I’m not really sure if the robot made it better than normal surgery? It made some things worse and others better.

    Holidays and weight gain

    I expected to gain a pound or two. Just you what you need to do to get back on track; walk, drink water, track your food. You will be right back on the loosing side in no time. Remember some of holiday foods have higher sodium contents and be patient with yourself while you flush that sodium out with water. Remember the good feeling of being with loved ones and keep moving forward to your goals. You can do this!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    Still on Full Liquids. Looking forward to puree. It's getting tough though. I haven't weighed myself... decided to do that only on Sundays. Not sure I feel like I've lost much weight this week. Surgery was last week Monday... so I'm 12 days out. I need to figure out how to get walking in. It's suddenly cold here.. 30 degrees. Compound that with constantly feeling cold after surgery and I do not want to go outside. I'm worried that I'm not getting enough protein. I know I'm allowed my protein shakes now, but the thought turns me off.
  11. Hey everyone. It’s the holidays and I have to admit I kind of lot my mind a little. I actually went home for then holidays and alot of my favorite foods the had. I don’t feel like I over indulged at one time. However, I do feel really guilty. I was doing so well. I have my surgery scheduled on Jan 18 and start pre-op diet Jan 4. I had people say enjoy myself, but I feel so bad. I don’t know if I gain alit of weight, but I feel like I’ve gained some. Is anyone else going through this? thanks. Ty.

    RNY to RNY revision.

    I'm at 266 right now, pre-surgery. I'm optimistic having read your status at 2.5 months. I'm hoping to break 200 after the revision. I haven't seen "onederland" since college. I dare not even dream of a lower target weight. I have done so well pre-surgery that people are asking why I want to go ahead with the revision. I was stalled for 10 weeks and thought I had bottomed out. However, this week I have just dropped a few pounds. I still don't have a surgery date, but that may be due to the rise in COVID cases In my area.

    RNY to RNY revision.

    I did an RNY revision to distal rny. I am 2.5 months out and was 266 two week before my surgery and today I was 216.4 (weight in the afternoon after eating). I have a toddler so not picking at her leftovers was an issue but the longer you stick with it the better it is! Also, you learn from your previous mistakes with your last surgery. I felt terrible after my first surgery but I’m taking my vitamins diligently and eating good and I’m so glad I did it! I’m going to start going to the gym soon too 🙂

    Acid Reflux or GERD post surgery

    I was told there's a 20% chance of getting GERD after surgery, worse than that if you already have it. But, I, for example, also have a hiatal hernia which can cause GERD. The plan is to fix the hernia, then that, plus weight loss, can possibly alleviate GERD. It's 6 one way, half a dozen the other. But I'm with you--it doesn't sound very likely there's a great outcome.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    Hi everyone - how are you all getting along? I'm day 10 today - got my staples out so totally lost horror/goth status with my family. I am just starting thicker fluids - yoghurt, runny mousse type consistency - and it feels good. I have lost *no weight at all* since I came home on day 2 - hoping this is just some sort of adjustment because I really need to see a loss soon. Managing about 50g protein a day - maybe 60 yesterday. I did suck a tiny lump of cheese yesterday and I've never tasted anything as good. Pain is improving a little every day. I have my 2 week checkup next Wednesday and I hope to go back to work after that. I'm walking 1000 quick steps several times a day now. How is everyone else? Just jogging along?
  16. P.S. they do have about 30 years of data on the RNY - although even over that time period, the technique has been changed a bit (and improved). Not as much data on the sleeve since that is a newer surgery. The sleeve is phase 1 of the duodenal switch surgery, and it wasn't offered as a standalone surgery until a few years ago (because many patients lost enough weight with the sleeve part of the DS (before having phase 2 - the intestinal bypass part of the DS) that they decided to offer it as a standalone surgery. It wasn't really until it started replacing the lapband ten or so years ago that it really took off in popularity.
  17. Someone asked about long-term complications in the elderly who had surgery decades ago. You can't really compare, because weight loss surgeries back in the 60s and 70s were very different than they are today. They were very risky and some people (including a former co-worker of mine) had them reversed - and some people died from them. But again, there's no comparison to the surgeries they do today. Plus the ones they do now are much safer and much less likely to have severe complications. you should be fine as long as you follow your plan, keep on top of your supplements, and have regular blood work done to check for deficiencies. Most deficiencies can be reversed if they're caught early. I do have osteoporosis, but I have no idea if that's due to my weight loss surgery or not, since we didn't do a baseline before my surgery. But I'm also in my 60s and osteoporosis runs rampant on both sides of my family, so it could have been that as well. I'm on a drug now that maintains bone, though - and there are other drugs that actually build bone. Honestly, at my starting weight (almost 400 lbs), I was much more concerned about complications from being severely obese (like premature death, for one) than I was about complications from my RNY.

You are right to have concerns & to ask questions about possible long term side effects as you should after any surgery or medication regime, etc. You should be fully informed before making any decision. The unfortunate thing today is that our chances for cancer, osteoporosis, etc. are Increasing regardless of having weight loss surgery or not. A combination of many factors including poor diet, genetics, lifestyle, environment all increase our chances for developing serious health issues as we age. Being obese increases our likelihood even more. Most of these we have no control over. You may have the surgery & develop an issue but you may have developed it without the surgery & vice versa. There are some things we can’t control or predict. As @Sunnyway said if you ensure you eat a balanced, nutritionally dense diet & follow the vitamin regime you are prescribed you will actively be working to avoid any possible side effects. I’d also suggest you continue to have regular blood tests to ensure you’re never lacking in anything & have bone density tests to check for early signs of osteoporosis. Make them a regular event to keep ahead of things just like having a regular Pap smear & your teeth checked. All the best.

    Vitamins

    I don’t take any vitamins any more. Haven’t since about month 8 (hit goal at 6 months) with my surgeon’s approval. While I was losing I took a multi vitamin. Also took a vitamin D to begin but was told to drop it because I had more than enough in my body. I stopped taking multivitamins because I’m not lacking in any nutrients - my three monthly blood work always comes back really good - except protein ☹️. (My poor ability to absorb protein is a result of my gall surgery but I don’t have to take the Creon I was prescribed anymore because they didn’t help - just have to continue to be vigilant with my protein intake.) What do your blood tests show? Are you lacking in any specific vitamin or mineral? Once you stabilise your weight, it’s not as necessary for sleevers to continue to take vitamins unless you are specific lacking in something unlike bypass patients who need to continue to take them due to malabsorption challenges.

    Anyone else terrified?

    Yes definitely it is indeed very terrifying. I am not really scared of dying per se, but more scared for my family and how they would manage if something goes wrong. Though worst case scenario is death but then again when I think about it as an obese person who has struggled with her weight half of her life and the fact that I haven't even *lived* my life to the fullest till now, so what's the most I can lose from the surgery anyways. All I have is to gain from this little risk. With that mindset, I am going all in and hoping for the best. Though I have written emails to my family and friends and have send them as *scheduled email* 1 week after the surgery date just in case I may not have the opportunity to do so. Just so they know how much I have love them and that there has been 0 regrets from my end for opting for this surgery. It may lessen their guilt in case something unfortunate happens. Besides that, I will go in with an optimist mindset and will hope to concur this little battle.

    Start Pre-Op Diet Early?

    I would say it's fine if you want to get the hang of things and may be want to lose little more weight. My surgery got postponed twice and both times I was on Pre-Op diet unfortunately. First time, I did it for 1 week and second time it was for 10 days. And finally I am yet again on my Pre-Op diet for 10 days with today being day 6. So I would say it's fine as long as you have it in you to keep going. Though I would recommend you enjoy this very last week before you have to take the plunge for 2 weeks straight. It may get difficult then and you may regret not utilizing a week before your Pre-Op diet to indulge in your favorite foods.
  23. It has been 5 months and I am so surprised at what a 5 months it has been. I have learned more about my body in the last few months that I ever knew in my previous 40+ years. I have learned the best foods for me, which ones keep me satisfied longer, which ones disagree with me and the ones that hinder weight loss. I am also learning how to leave food on my plate. Some things are easier to learn (portion sizes) while others are still an issue (remembering to eat slowly). I have lost 84.6 overall….61.4 pounds since surgery…. and a combined total of 46 inches. As of today I am also officially in the overweight category. I am off my blood pressure and cholesterol medicine and my thyroid meds have been reduced. My knees and back feel better and I have so much energy! I have a lot to be thankful for but today I am most thankful that my husband has taken over the thanksgiving meal duty!   25. Hey everyone! I am 27F trying to get the Bypass mostly for my GERD but also to lose weight. It's gotten to the point where I have pain every night and some days sleep 4 hours max. The only thing keeping me away from the surgery is the fear of developing some very bad complications (like osteoporosis). If one follows the diet and vitamin intake to a tee, how likely that I will get to old age without getting them? I would really like to live my 30s and 40s relatively healthy and not be "damaged" by the operation.
