  1. I had my first PB last week. I was eating Turkey (admittedly a bit overcooked). I only had about 5 small bites when the pain hit. Then I paced from the kitchen to the bathroom moaning like a moose in heat and spitting slime (thank god my husband loves me). Finally, after about 15 minutes, I went to the toilet, coughed and there appeared my chewed up turkey. I had immediate relief and was so happy :nervous

    Carb Intake

I would take a guess that possibly you are not eating enough. My nut said that I should be eating 1200 calories per day as long as I am working our 5-7 times per week. She said eating less than that can cause more stalls with our body thinking it is not going to get enough. Are you getting the minimum protein? I have found when I up my calories, that I actually lose more weight and have more success.

    Drive Home?

Well ... that is quite the question as everybody has different experiences. I was outpatient, in at 7 and out by noon. As you can imagine, there is no possible way I could have driven myself. I was still quite drugged. Other folks are in for anywhere from one night to a week. So, I think it all depends on how long you stay at the hospital, if you have any complications and how well you have responded to surgery in the past. Just because one person was able to drive home after one night in the hospital doesn't mean you will be able to ...

    1/3 pound a week - Should I be happy?

You've come so far, 1/3lb a week at so close to your goal is fabulous!! How many times can you say you were so near goal from a diet, and you didn't start gaining? When I stall (and I'm still so far out), I just do a little dance because I'm NOT gaining. I'm keeping that weight gone for good! That's a first in my life.

    Lost almost too much weight

That is life... I don't do the chewing forever, but if you are not having the surgery, it is recommended for you to do the practice. This helps you slow down and may make it possible for you to actually sense your full mark rather than eat fast and over fill witch is so easy to do. The losing to much is possible. I know, I did it. I looked gaunt and it took a while to regain. Then it was hard to stop the regain. Uhg. Try but drinking 1/2 hour before your meal, during, and 1/2 hour after. 15 minutes for snacks. Chew chew chew... Not to the point of gagging but enough to slow you down. If your not full in 1/2 hour (me it's 15 min) stop anyway. Focus on protein first, limit anything white (bad carbs) and see how you do. You should see a progress within a few weeks if you hold your self accountable. Take vitamins as well.... Good luck my friend

    sweet spot

Ah that seems to be the answer. Didn't think about losing the fat around the stomach as you lose weight. Actually this week the band seems to be working for me. I have pulled back the weight I have gained over the last few weeks. I had the flu, throat and eye infections about three weeks ago and my diet really did go haywire. I have been really good eating food which I know will make my band work. I have also realised that I seem to get a sign when I should stop eating. It's not a full feeling as I don't seem to get that - I don't ever feel hungry either !!!! so I eat because it is meal time or I fancy something not through hunger. So figures I don't recognise full either. Anyway I seem to everytime I eat get the hiccups which I now am taking as my band saying 'stop eating' Have been doing this since the weekend and I have lot the 4 lbs I regained. So think I am going to cancel my appointment for a fill this weekend [i would hate to have a fill and then have to go back for a defill - I have a three hour trip to the clinic!] and will see how it goes for a couple of weeks. I really must stop with the protein shakes as they obviously slip down far too easily although I do love them.

    Shopping is so therapeutic

I ended up having to take the jeans back from OldNavy. They were too long even with heels. I exchanged them for the 'short' size, I have short legs. I also picked up a couple of shirts. We stopped by the "Avenue" because they were having a big clearance. I almost fit inot their 14/16, but the boobage makes those shirts really short, and I still have a belly that I like to hide. I had to go with the 18/20 and the 2 shirts are a bit big, but super comfy. For 6 bucks each, I really couldn't pass them up. We stopped by Gamestop for the new Rockband Country track. I also picked up the Wii Active on a recommendation from a friend. I'm starting tonight, and I know I am going to feel so much better. Dr. M released me to full activity this last Monday, and I am feeling better this week than I have since this journey began back in June. I bought some adult gummie vitamins and they taste amazing. I still have my rough patches, but for the most part, life is so much better. We have less than 30 days on this deployment. Communication is slim, and it's frustrating. He's almost home, and I started all my little projects around the house. I bought new bedding for our bed, and he is going to love it. Every time he goes away, I buy new bedding. It's a weird thing I do, and he always loves what I pick out. I also cleaned out my closet. I bagged up over 100 articles of clothing, and I figured if I could sell each piece for 1-3 bucks each, that would be 100-300 for new clothes. It felt so good to get purged all of those clothes. I'll miss them, but I'll enjoy getting new ones more. I guess that's all for now. I hope everyone is doing well.
  8. So today I cheated and had a chicken cheese steak on my pre op diet. Surgery is Wednesday and I feel terrible and also worried that my liver will be too big to complete the surgery. Is it common for surgeons to close you up and not do the surgery? I am going to stay strict the next three days. My pre op diet is... Protein shake, protein bar, protein shake, protein bar, dinner of chicken veggies and tiny starch, protein shake.
  9. Thanks everyone i feel a little better knowing its in my head. Tyring to get my liquids in and protein when i can. I can't start soft foods till next week bit i can't wait for eggs and tuna! Lol I'm counting the days for that :-)

How finicky is your band after fills?

Hi Roxy, I'm exactly the same - each fill is different but it takes weeks, sometime a couple of months to settle. At the moment it's changed again since I've come back from holiday so I'm having to learn all over again what the band is happy with. I do think some of it is in my head because I now never have problems when I go out with friends - I can eat most things although a bit slow. However when I'm at home, I can PB on Water sometimes!

    Step It Up Marchies

Hey fellow Marchies--glad I found you again. Something must have happened with my subscription thread and I realized I haven't heard from my Marchies this month--or even last! How time flies. So I just caught up and am glad you are all still supporting us all. Thanks! So sorry to hear of the cancer, Mrs. Husker. Good for you being so courageous and determined. What a great attitude you have--it will serve you well. Teenage daughters--argh! I raised NINE of them. Glad those days are over although, at times, my empty nest seems incredibly empty. But we are great friends, now, and I'm sure you'll find that once your daughter is on the other side of the fence (as we call it), she'll be apologizing to you for your extra gray hairs. It really is all worth it. I was just laid off again last week--twice in year just isn't funny! After being laid off from the US Ski team in January, I took a job in May (after sending out 154 resumes) with a remodeling/construction firm. I loved my job but, unfortunately, we ran out of customers now that winter is approaching. My boss says he'll hire me back in March when business picks up again so I'm hoping that's the case. I have a busy fall/winter ahead with a new grandbaby in CA and all the kids coming for Christmas--29 people in all! So it's okay for now but, of course, the income will be sorely missed. As far as weight loss, I'm at a standstill again so need to ramp up the exercise, etc. I'm with you Carol--haven't lost as much as others but SO glad I have the band because if I didn't, I'd be in a horrible zone right now. I'm really grateful for what I've lost and, honestly, if I don't lose much more I'll be okay. Just 9 more lbs. puts me in a "normal BMI" range so I'm hoping for that. Wishing you all the best in your life with your new bodies! Karen

    Step It Up Marchies

Hello To All The 1st of September was a new beginning for me. I did't have any cravings and ate very little. I had an eating urge but managed to get through it. The scale didn't go up and is slow going down. But, down rather than up. Still making it to the gym, which may be keeping me from gaining more if I didn't. My September plan is to start the group personal training again, 2) get back into my step aerobic class 3) any other free classes at least 3x a week 4) and gym in the mornings. The gym opens at 6am, so I can exercise, shower and get to work from there. Well, it's a plan. What's yours for the month of September?

    questions

As you are not eating a lot do you have energy for excersise and general living etc? I have two young kids and go to the gym 4-5days a week. I need energy. I have alot of energy and I am 2 weeks out. The first week, not so much and every once in a while I've done too much, but a lot more energy without caffine! Secondly how is life after the weightloss.? Do you still enjoy goong out for dinner/lunch/coffees etc? I just started back on food and I went out for dinner last night and lunch today with coworkers. Its a little odd at first, but nothing too strange. I just have alot of leftovers Most people with partners order one meal and they take a small portion from the plate for themselves. Saves money and you're not wasting it. Thirdly how slow do you really have to eat? Is it a pain? You have to be conscious about how you eat, buts its not extremely slow. Practice eating like this: take a bite of something, chew it as much as possible, swallow, put your utensil down for 10 seconds, pick it up again and then do it again. Do you miss not heing able to eat a lot? Do you still want to and you just cant? Or does soms of the desire disapear? This is where your mind plays tricks on you. I am absolutely never hungry, but I know I have to eat. Then again there were times when I wasn't hungry and I ate, like if I was bored, etc. I catch myself more now than I did preop. I am more aware of my feelings and this is a process, not everyone is perfect. Do you have to drink slow? Yes, I sip my water. If I noticed I took in a large amount I either slowly traffic it down or spit it out.
  16. I am 7 weeks today and thought I would be a bit closer to 200, but I will take the loss that I have so far and strive to get more Water in and less carbs! Thanks for sharing, you and I are neck and neck at the 230ish range

    satisfaction

This is all very interesting. I know there are times... LOTS of times that if I listen to what my body wants, I eat too much, and of the wrong things. Now maybe this is not my body talking, its my head, but really they are connected at the neck, and have something to do with each other. I have spent quite a bit of time analyzing the cause and effect of what I eat - to how I feel... and I find that when I eat some kinds of food I may generally love how they taste, and like putting them in my mouth, and like the immediate feeling it produces... through my shoulders and chest of all places, but what is missing is satisfaction. I'm not talking about feeling full. There is something I am looking for that I don't usually get from food...satisfaction. Like, Im finished now. I feel fine, I got the energy from the food now... or something like that. Perhaps this is partly what people call emotional eating. I think emotions may be part of the picture sometimes for me, but not always. The satisfaction I crave feels more physical. When I really look close at the/my overeating experience, this is missing almost all the time. I realize I don't really like the taste of the food that much... the taste is not enough for me to be satisfied. Its like I'm not getting the basic nutrition I crave or something. Now I think this is where the addiction label comes into the picture. That craving for satisfaction. I just look for it in the food over and over again. Some types of food really heighten this experience...you all know what they are.... refined carbs... sugar, the "whites" High Fructose.... Its not the fats, its not the protein, its not even the whole grains and carbby vegs in moderation. The only time I get satisfied, is when I cut them out. And I need to cut them out for at least 3 weeks before I feel the satisfaction creep in. When I do this, then the size of the meal goes down, and the pounds start to slide off, and I can start to trust what my body/head asks for. However I make myself eat protein snacks even then, because if I let myself get too hungry, the chance of the old habits to reach for the easy donut are a little easier, and I just don't want to go there and start the cycle again.

    8 months

I can say that Ive never felt REALLY depressed about it but it is kind of a bummer. But like others have said, I haven't put in the effort. Even now my exercise stickers on my calendar get very lonely. I just haven't done it. I injured my ankle in February and just got back to normal the beginning of this month. Oh, and its been hot out...(excuse) so I haven't walked much,,,oh, and I belong to a gym but I find it really hard to fit into my 'busy' schedule (excuse). BUT!!! My fill is now where it should be...totally sweet. And I have been eating slowly and Protein first. AND!!! I've been losing real steady now. Like, I've lost 2 pounds this week. I think my sweet spot has been with me for 3 weeks and it just took me awhile to accustom myself to it. I work evenings and this seems to make a difference. When I'm home I don't need food as much. You'd think it'd be the other way around. Point is that HOPE is there. Don't give up. I was aggressive with my fills to the point that my doctor got sick of seeing me lol. He could see where he poked me the last time cus the mark was still there. Well, he hasn't seen me in a while. I'm one who stopped writing but never stopped reading. Especially here in our monthly forum. Slow or fast, to me it doesn't matter. I definately would have put weight on had I not done this. 2 other things have changed for me that is very significant. I was a binge eater and liked to eat out ALOT. Mexican, pizza, Pasta YUM. Can't go there much now. And I LOVED my beer. I can't tolerate carbonation so I'm pretty abstinate...that's a good thing because alcohol was a problem for me. This operation isn't completely about weight. My cholesterol was good before but my triglicerides have gone down significantly. This is good. So keep your chin up and pray for patience. Valerie

    Week 5 Questions

I agree. The food you are eating is filling you up without providing much nutrition. I am 5 weeks out yesterday, here is a sample of what I eat in a day...I am not perfect, just throwing out ideas. Breakfast: premier Protein shake (30 G protein) or Dannon light n fit greek yogurt (12 G protein). On occasion I've had 1/3 serving of malt o meal with a dab of yogurt and teaspoon of truvia mixed in. Doesn't provide much, but if I'm sick of the other two this is what I've had. Morning snack: if I've had a shake for breakfast I'll have a Greek yogurt and vice versa Lunch: 1 oz albacore tuna mixed with a little mayo or plain Greek yogurt, sometimes sprinkle a little ranch powder for a diff flavor, sometimes with 2 crackers or few bites of soft fruit. Pm snack: cheese stick, 1/4 c cottage cheese or chike protein iced coffee Dinner: little bit of whatever I cooked. Last night, 1 oz salmon and 1 piece steamed cauliflower. Salmon was a little too dry for my tummy so I added a spoon of Greek yogurt on top and sprinkled with Parmesan Snack (if needed): sugar free Popsicle, Greek yogurt or cottage cheese I am slowly incorporating more real foods and trying for less shakes and soft foods, but obviously that's a slow process. My main goal is to hit 75 G protein a day which I almost always do. I log every thing I eat because I'm not great at estimating intake. I'm currently hitting 600-700 calories a day which my nut thinks is good but she'd really like me tone at least to 800 with a long term goal of 1100-1300. Hope this helps.

    Week 5 Questions

are you not starting the day with a protein shake or meal? what is your post op eating plan like? cereal and bread were def not on my list of stuff to have at 5 weeks and even now, not unless i have my protein in.
  21. I'm about 12 weeks out and I'm down 47 pounds. Haven't had complications, sleep better, off my diabetic meds and feeling happy! My question is about the future. My biggest fear is back sliding into old problems, I want to stay in this good place I'm now in. I can only eat moderate amounts of food and that restriction is helping me change things for the better. When I'm a year or two out will that be completely gone? I'm worried. I'm really hoping this help sticks with me. Any experiences from long timers would be fantastic to hear! Thank you!
  22. Want to be free- I was also banded a week ago, and like you, I only had to do 1 week of liquids! I'm also on the mushies/soft foods stage. My dietician made menus for me, and a tablespoon of peanut butter is actually an option for a snack. My education nurse did say that in her opinion, peanut butter shouldn't be added in until 2-3 months out. I've been too scared to try it out though!

    A journey in patience

I am losing my patience too. I haven’t been waiting a long time, but I’ve been extremely proactive. I got my last 5 years medical records; I had my PCP order ultra sound to make sure I am not having issues with my gall bladder or have hernia. I have been waiting for 2 weeks for the coordinator to schedule one more test and 1 week for the coordinator to submit to my insurance. I don’t understand what is taking so long. My biggest issue not returning my calls. I think 48 hours should be enough time to return a call. I understand people get busy but this is the office that performing my lap band surgery AND I did all the work to get everything to submit to my insurance. I am going to give my doctor until Thursday than I am going into the office for answers.

Preop day 2 harder than i thought

If I remember correctly days 2 and 3 were the worst for me. I think it was on one of those days I remember thinking, "Why oh why did I do this to myself?" It gets better, much better. The first 3 or 4 weeks are difficult and pobably the most challenging. After that you start to feel better and begin discovering what you can eat instead of what you can't! Oops! I was thinking about my post-op days. Sorry! You can get throught the pre-op when you see needle move on the scale and remember - if you don't do this, you can't have the surgery! Hang in there!
