    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I have a surgery date of 3/16. I'm one week into my three-week Pre-op diet. So far I'm down 18.2lbs.! I'm super excited about my surgery and cannot wait for Rob 2.0 to thrive!

    Still pain at incision site

Hope you get some different responses to this I’m 3dsys post op and it’s definitely been a challenge can’t imagine 3 weeks.
  3. Hey everyone I was wondering how long everyone had pain at the site where they took the part of your stomach out. I’m now 3 weeks out and still having very sharp pain. I still cannot bend down or anything. Just hoping it will feel better soon. The doctor said it’s normal but I just want others opinions.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Good luck to everyone having surgery tomorrow! I've got my final pre-op with the surgeon tomorrow. I'm expecting to get my pre-surgery diet instructions. I'm not nervous... I'm anxious to get to surgery day. It's been a long 9 month process of jumping through hoops with very low expectations of insurance approving my revision. Now that they have, I just want to get on to the next stage. I am ready for this stage. I'm all in. It's hard because my partner is having a sleeve bypass 1 month after I have my revision and she's in a much different mindset than I am. She's like "after the liquid phase, well be able to have whatever we want, just a bite or two" and I'm like "nope, I'm making healthy choices, I've been through this before, it truly is just a tool that will help you start those healthy habits so they stick long term" My 50th birthday is two weeks after my surgery and she thinks I can have a bite of ice cream cake. I'm like, no. So we are having some of my favorite foods that she makes and my birthday cake Friday night. Still gonna have a bigger party actually on my birthday with family and friends but that's just to celebrate and the food won't be an issue for me. Wow lol that was a lot! I'm overdue for a session with my therapist. Lol
  5. It gets better and better! I was so excited when I went from a 2x to non-plus sizes and could shop anywhere instead of a few retailers. I am a couple of weeks shy of one year post-op (March 18) and down to my goal. I love clothes shopping now and proudly heading to the size small section! I went from an 18-20 to a 4-6. Enjoy your journey!!!

    Potatoes 5 weeks out

I’m 5 months out and occasionally il have a wee teaspoon of mash or three fries …. Alongside some protein and veg items. I never order it as it’s a waste just steal a little taste from my other halfs plate … it kills the craving and it doesn’t dominate my calories for the day ! Each to their own … find your path x
  7. P.S. just saw your last message. Zero hunger or appetite at three months out is normal. Vomiting everything solid that you eat is not. Call your clinic.
  8. check with your clinic. That could be symptomatic for a stricture, and you're still in the "window" for one (they almost always occur, when they're going to occur, between one and three months post-surgery (they're very rare after you hit the three month mark) they occur in about 5% of bypass patients. And they're an easy fix (I had two - at four weeks out and again at about eight weeks out)
  9. Thanks for the feedback. Yeah it doesn’t seem normal but I honestly don’t look up a lot of forums or ask for help. I like the weight falling off and amazingly I don’t really have a lack of energy despite never really eating anything. I work out at the gym three times a week. I mainly drink water through the day and one cup of oikos yogurt and that’s it
  10. I am almost three months postop and I have not been able to eat anything more than foods like yogurt or applesauce consistency. I have tried eating soft vegetables very well chewed up chicken tilapia etc and I throw up afterwards. Is this normal? I read about people eating eggs and soft foods but I can barely stomach a little yogurt or applesauce. I have my 3 month visit in less than two weeks any suggestions or thoughts on what I can do or say? Thanks

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi All, I have my surgery scheduled for March 15 and am about 2 weeks into my liquid+1 meal preop diet. But I'm struggling to lose weight even though I'm following the surgeon's guidelines. I'm super nervous they will postpone my surgery if I haven't met their weight loss goals for pre-op. Has this happened to anyone, any advice is welcomed?

    March surgery buddies

I started the second week of pre-op diet yesterday which means only liquids. It’s actually not that bad because I’m full of liquid all the time. My mind tries to tell me that I want something to eat, but I’m truly not stomach hungry. I guess that’s good since the post-op diet is liquids for awhile, too.

It depends on what type of job you have. A desk job would be easier to go back to work sooner than a physically demanding factory line job. For the most part you'll feel fine, just tired maybe for the first part of a week.

Hello and welcome, I would never have begun the pre op diet earlier than needed its brutal. Everybody on these forums has a different diet given to them and a liquid diet seems to be voted the worst. My pre op was 3 weeks of only non starchy vegetables and nothing else and I cursed it and couldn't wait for it to end. The first 4 days of any pre op diet are truly the worst and then hunger pangs dissipate somewhat. Keep talking to the wonderful people in the forum and read the back pages, it really helped me. Good luck
  15. Hello IM NEW HERE. I have my surgery 03/21/22. Very excited and nervous at the same time. I suppose to start my liquid diet next Monday it I started it today just so I can get use to it by next week lol any advice on that. It was a struggle for me today I love food lol.

2 weeks post op & Stomach bloated....

Thank you who mentioned swelling can be for 6-7 weeks. Oddly, my huge emergency C section scar is invisible. I had this 1985 but was from belly button almost to under breasts and inch wide. Hmmm great if never surfaced again although at 61 who cares right? 😂

I took 3 weeks off after my sleeve and that was exactly right for me. I'd say I was working at 90% efficiency when I went back. I was tired but the working helped distract me. It's really variable. I hope you make a nice speedy recovery OP!

it depends on the person - and also what kind of job you're talking about. I had bypass - and a desk job. I took three weeks off, but I could have gone back after two.

As some are saying 2-6 weeks seem to be the standard. I was traveling for work within 2 weeks. Working remotely (e-mails and meetings) sporadically within a couple of days. That being said, I was TIRED... definitely needed a nap a day during the first couple of weeks. Once I went to pureed food and was getting in enough nutrients, that got better quickly.
  20. That’ll fade! Im only 5 months out and all my “early stage” cravings are completely gone. The first 4-8 weeks I felt devastated because I was convinced my surgery “didnt work”. I was craving food CONSTANTLY, being obsessed with watching tiktok junk food compilations and wanting to eat so bad. I havent had junk food or what we typically would consider “bad” food but I have had pieces of food I had glorified in those weeks (guacamole, fried egg, chocolate protein yoghurt) and I hated it. Your taste buds change. Your priorities change (because you know you can only take a few bites). And ultimately you change. It’s hard to believe now (and when people told me “back then” I wasn’t convinced either. I thought “yeah yeah except I’m different!”. But here I am now writing this) but trust me. Hang in there. Sit it out. Stick to your diet. Trust the process. I have faith in you!

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Anyone who had their surgery earlier this month starting to eat again? Just had my first "pureed stage" food. I'm taking it slow texture-wise so I started with soup. I am so happy to be cooking again. I made a big meal prep of broccoli carrot cream soup with unflavored protein powder. I sweated down some garlic, onions, oregano, black pepper, and very small diced-up carrots. I then added vegetable stock, low sodium, and half a small pack of frozen chopped broccoli. I blended together fat-free half/half with 2 scoops of unflavored zero card protein powder (isopure 50 grams of protein total) then added it to the soup. I then transferred it all to my blender and made it very fine. It's not thick at all but the flavor is amazing after having nothing but sweet protein drinks for weeks. I had 1/2 a cup with a teaspoon of cheddar on top. I didn't feel full after but I'm so scared about dumping so I just stopped lol. My dietician says I still have to have protein drinks to compensate if I feel I'm not getting everything through food. I will say it's AMAZING to get the taste of real food in my mouth. I personally hate sweets and sweet drinks so the protein shakes really are starting to gross me out. I'm excited to try my other pureed recipes and continue the journey! Hope everyone is doing well.

    Milestones!

I am just beginning this process. I am required to do 4 months of dietary sessions with my primary. We have actually been doing this since I got on prednisone. I keep blowing up. 109 lbs in 11 mths with a 1000calorie or less diet. I have 2 lung diseases and RA so I will be on some dose of prednisone for the rest of my life. I am working on a taper down. I am hoping to get down to 5mg? I think 10 mg is going to be my magic number, unfortunately so my battle will be forever but getting all this weight off now is going to be a good thing. I am at a point where I can barely walk anywhere without my O2 dropping down in the low 80s. I am on oxygen 24/7. My risk of a cardiac event is alarming. This is the main reason why my dr wanted me to have the sleeve surgery. I want to get rid of the type 1 diabetes that prednisone threw me into after my SECOND dose! I have already started a scheduled meal day and cut my portions down to child size(I 1use a kids plate and utensils). I sub one meal with a protein shake. I will graduate to 2 shakes closer to surgery pre-op. I am really concerned about my support system. My husband already does most of the housework. I cook when I feel up to it. Maybe 3-4 times a week. However, he works nights so that he can take me to dr appts. Well, he sleeps ALL DAY LONG. From 9ish until 7 pm at night. He says he can't function without 10 full hours of sleep. On his days off, he sleeps all day and most of the night. He says he has to catch up. He is exhausted and sore. I don't know if I can manage by myself post-op. My son lives in the same town but he has work and such, I am sure he would come to help for a few days. My daughter lives in Florida. She has 3 kids. When I asked if she would come for the surgery since I am high-risk with my lungs, she said that my youngest 2 grandchildren's birthdays are near the time I will be scheduled. Could I plan it some other time? I was devastated that she said that. My Pulmonologist said I have over a 65% chance of not waking up(my risk of a cardiac event if I don't have surgery, is 100%). So, I am not sure how much help I am going to need after surgery. I know everyone is different but, can I do things on my own? I even have 4 dogs to take out all day. One on a leash. Please tell me I will be ok?

I think the time you need is really unpredictable. I had decided to take 6 weeks off so I could get through the liquid and puree stages on a normal eating schedule as I do shift work and 12 hours shifts as well. But I ended up taking nearly 10 weeks as mentally the surgery knocked me around but going back to work gave me some of my old routine back and helped me get out of my funk but I certainly wasn't expecting what I went through to happen. We have also seen people post about being back at work going to the gym etc after a week 😳 I don't know that exercise other than walking is a good idea so soon after surgery but anyway I think 2 weeks depending on how physically demanding your job is. Is about average.

Hi and Thanks for answering. I looked through all my papers I was given and funny I don't see anything about sodium but I could be over looking it. I did see where chicken and stars and cream of chicken was ok which I ate the first week minus the chicken in the soup. I felt kind of funny due to the carbs and sodium in it. Might be why I have only lost 3 pounds, 2 weeks tomorrow since surgery. I am not suppose to advance to solid foods till next week and actually the thought of anything solid even a egg doesn't seem possible. I am living on soups, greek yogurt, fat free cottage cheese and protein shakes. I did eat a half a can of the deviled ham yesterday but kinda felt like I was in a no no zone, lol. I am not a big drinker, so getting the 64 oz down is a real challenge, I am using crystal light as a helper.
