  1. No. Sleeves don't really stretch. The stretchy part, or fundus, was removed during surgery. It would take years of grossly overeating to the point of vomiting to actually stretch it enough to where you're eating significantly enough to cause weight gain. Can the sleeve relax and complete healing over time allowing more food to be eaten? Absolutely. That's why it's important for us not to just count on sleeve restriction and pay more attention to what we are eating for when that time comes. And to the OP: You can have 10 different weight loss surgeries, but the fact of the matter is if your head isn't in the game, NONE of them will work. Like Ann said, look inside and try to figure out what caused you to not succeed before, and then figure out the steps it will take to help you become successful whether you decide on revision surgery or give this one antother go. Your sleeve hasn't changed, it's just waiting for you to.
  2. Same problem with me, everything was going good and they have made me jump through hoops and I am waiting for the final chance for RNY revision
  3. The last time I lost a significant amount of weight was on the Adkin's diet when I was 23. I went from 201 down to 163, a loss of 38 pounds, & actually kept it off for a couple of years. Over the years I gradually gained until I hit my high of 314 after I quit smoking 4+ years ago. I gained about 10-11 pounds over 6 months & then lost that over the next 6 months without even trying. Then I was back to about 303-304 pounds where I had stabilized for several years. I had gone back on the Adkin's diet many times over the years. I had also tried the liquid "pre-digested protein" back in the early 1980s & Nutri-System in 1990-91. At the most I would lose 10 pounds & then stall. My surgeon did say he thought the duodenal switch would give me the best results for my type 2 diabetes but I said I didn’t want anything to do with malabsorption & he was fine with that. I did have the gastric sleeve done on 8-22-2013. My weight the day before surgery was 259, a loss of 44 pounds in 4 months pre-op. Over the next 5 months or so I lost about 33 pounds & then I stalled. Nothing would break the stall. I did lose another 5 pounds over the next 10 months. On 12-8-2014 I had a panniculectomy where my surgeon removed 15 pounds (!) of excess skin & fat. This was covered by insurance since I had documentation of recurring severe rashes under the "apron." I did hit a low of 201 pounds about two months after the panniculectomy but that was very briefly & I gradually regained to 219. My BMI was still just over 35 & I still have the co-morbidities, although markedly improved, that I did when I started. I can’t say the sleeve didn’t work. After all, I was down 84 pounds from my starting weight & 95 pounds from my highest weight. When they say patients lose an average of 65% of their excess weight, there are many on both sides of that average. I’m just one of the lower percentage people. My age & length of time I've had type 2 diabetes are probably the main reasons I hadn't lost as much weight as I had hoped. So, after much consideration I have decided to have the duodenal switch as my surgeon originally suggested. The major malabsorption of the classic duodenal switch still scares me so I had decided to ask Dr Srikanth if he would do a longer common channel when I learned of the single anastomosis duodenal switch which has an even longer common channel. He & I have agreed on a 300 cm common channel which is an amount of malabsorption I am comfortable with. The pre-op testing revealed that the upper portion of my sleeve has dilated so he re-sleeved that at the same time as the switch. I asked about the sleeve dilating &, apparently, that is normal. It's what our stomachs are made to do. It's the upper portion of the sleeve that will dilate. A gastric sleeve procedure removes a lot, maybe most, of that stretchable portion, but there is still some. It was a lot of work, getting all of the testing & an updated psych evaluation done, but I got them done in a week & got insurance approval a week after that. So I was able to get my surgery done before the end of the year, on December 29. I was even able to lose 10 pounds in the three weeks before surgery, most on the dreaded Clear liquids. I had a revision of the sleeve, the single-anastomosis duodenal switch & repair of a hiatal hernia. Recovery has not been as smooth as it was for the original sleeve but I'm making progress, probably faster than a lot of patients undergoing the same procedure. I think the hiatal hernia repair has cause the most discomfort. I had a lot of gas pains under my diaphragm & spasms of pain running across my diaphragm every time I swallowed. But that is better & I rarely take even acetaminophen for pain, just walking & drinking my liquids warm helps the most. Of course, I put on 10 pounds in the hospital & by six days after surgery I was back to "day of surgery" weight. My surgeon is very strict on the post-op diet & I was to start 5 Protein shakes a day on day 8. It has been a challenge, much more so than the first sleeve, to get all of my fluids in, but I have gotten the minimum 80 oz in every day, & over 100 oz the last two days. My shakes are supposed to be made with just 3-4 oz of Water. But trying to get even that much down is a struggle. I switched to unflavored Protein powder after my first sleeve because the flavored ones just "sat like a rock" in my stomach. Now I'm having the same reaction only more so to the unflavored. It does go best mixed with my homemade broth, but still it makes me gag. I’m now trying different brands I got from GNC & Super supplements. Instead of stressing over how much I’m getting in (& keeping down), I’m just doing my best. The huge number of Vitamin & mineral supplements as well as the regular prescription meds I take is very hard to do.

@@Caela88 It took me a while to get to goal, so I may have well been a revision, lol. I lost 85 pounds in 12 months, and it took me an additional 5 months to lose 10 more. I'm a little on the older side (pushing 50), and since having a hysterectomy, have the metabolism of a koala bear But I lost it, I'm maintaining it so far, and that's all that matters!

I'm getting the revision too. My band slipped. Then decided to have it removed as it was not giving me any restriction and with all the fills. Then I learned to eat around the band. I was always hungry. If Protein did not go down.. I would eat things that did. I've learned so much since deciding to proceed with the revision. Proteins first. I would get so frustrated with the band. eat proteins. chew chew chew to then slime. And this would be a year out. Band tight during stress or anxiety. getting an unfill then a fill. I would stop eating when I felt a little tight after a few bites but still be hungry!! Then I would wait for the food to go down and take a few more bites. By NIght time I could eat whatever I wanted. Looking forward to a better tool!
  7. I have had Vertical Banding done 20+ yrs. ago and dealt with issues for a long time, and just found something can be done. I am considering having DS done as a revision, but wondered if anyone else has done so with VBG from so long ago. THX
  8. When I originally started my journey, my heart was set on getting the sleeve surgery. It wasn't until I met with the surgeon the first time that he thought I would benefit from gastric bypass. I was a full blown diabetic at the time, who had to take insulin at night as well as meds, and had high blood pressure. The surgeon mentioned that I could go with the sleeve, however if I am not happy with my progress, I would have a sleeve to bypass revision. I only wanted to go under the knife once, so I eventually decided on bypass. Its been almost 7 months since I had surgery and I cant tell you how happy I am with the results. I was almost400pds when I started, and I am now in the 200s. I still have a long way until I meet my goals, however I am no longer diabetic by medical standards, they even took it off my medical chart. I say good luck to you in whatever journey you decide. You may want to make a list pros and cons for each, and see what you come up with. You are the one in this

Excess Skin: And the Emotional, Thick Skinned Woman

@@My Bariatric Life may I ask what ongoing complications you are dealing with? I am 2 years post plastics and doing great, but I had some sort of injury to my right breast, resulting in a seroma that would not go away, resulting in removing the implant, resulting in me needing a replacement. My implants are small, but they give that youthful upper fullness that I have none of without. Anyway, it is not a big deal but I had no idea that implant revisions are so common (for one reason or another). Anybody on the fence about it should be aware that something like 20% of implants are revised in the first few years post op. sometimes it is because the patient wants to "go bigger" but sometimes it is mysterious stuff like my story.... As far as my arm lift, lower body lift - no issues, it is behind me and i don't expect any ongoing problems. My scars don't bother me either.

    Submitting your information

Sorry to hear your having trouble. I am having the exact same problem. Coordinator says its faxed and insurance says they do not have it. This has been going on since Nov. I am having a revision from band to sleeve due to band problems and in considerable pain. Each day that passes is miserable and my coordinator does not seem to care. She hardly ever returns a phone call and when she does its like " I don't know what the insurances problem is". Claims she has faxed my records 3 times and still nothing. That rock and hard place is getting mighty uncomfortable for me.
  11. I seriously considered doing a revision to a long thigh lift. I talked to a PS here locally, and of course Dr Sauceda by email and they both said "don't do it". While my thighs aren't "tight" like my arms are, due to this leg fat having a life of its own (weird) they just didnt think it was worth the cost, recovery and scars for me as the results would probably not be long lasting, and as much improvement as i want. Same advice he gave me when I had my original plastics.... I have made peace with it. My outer thighs are awesome - I am your classic skinny butt girl and my thighs look muscular. The inner thigh is where I jiggle, and have excess skin and what looks to me like extra fat cells. I am counting my blessings that nobody else really notices and it and thigh gaps are overrated anyway. This is the part of the program where I remind myself I AM 51, didn't spend my teens, 20s, 30s or most of 40s as a supermodel and fit (quite the opposite, was obese!) and I need to seriously have realistic expectations and in truth I do - it is nice to dream a little though. Maybe in my next life I can get a thigh gap - ha

Weight Loss and what to expect

It's really hard to tell for sure, especially since you are a revision and that may effect the size and shape of your sleeve. I have read that a lot of revisions from lap-band have scar tissue in their stomachs that their surgeons have to work around. The good news is, a LOT of the outcome of your surgery is in your control! If you stick to the plan, get your water, get your protein, get your vitamins, and exercise regularly, then you'll lose the weight. The sleeve is just a tool, remember. It's up to you how you use that tool to achieve success.
  13. They are both good procedures. I weighed 308 when I revised from band to sleeve 4 years ago and am maintaining in the 150s now. Here is what I think, if a person thinks any WLS is going to keep them from making"bad" choices over the long haul, they are likely to be disappointed. I have read that not all bypass patients "dump" and that extra help offen goes away over time. You must be committed to a lifestyle overhaul with either procedure or you risk regain. The sleeve helped me change my relationship with food for several reasons, but I think the key was the elimination of the 24/7 drive to eat, constant hunger. Years later, My hunger is now what a normal person experiences and that period of time of no hunger helped me figure out how to keep it in check and how my choices dictate my hunger drive. They each have risks, and benefits. The bypass has a much longer proven track record. I had my , probably somewhat irrational reasons for avoiding the bypass, but I guess in the end I came to "believe" that the sleeve would help me and i proceeded to make sure it did. Research, and decide which seems to fit your life better and go for it!

Weight Loss and what to expect

Good morning Caela88....I didn't have a lap band, but I was sleeved in 2011. I started at 223, was about 210 at surgery, and reached my goal weight of 139 in just under a year. Have kept it off for 4 plus years now. I am 5'3" I don't know why the revision would affect the amount of your weight loss; the sleeve is a completely different procedure in my mind. My dr. would not give me the lap band because of the poor statistics of success. I have a feeling you will do very well. Good luck and if my success is your guide you'll be at your goal weight by the end of the year!

There are LOTS of revisions who met goal and even beyond on this forum. Hoping they chime in I'm not a revision, but at 5'5" started at 235 and now weigh 140, 10 pounds below my goal of 150.

  19. Hello Everyone. I have my revision from lapband to sleeve scheduled for the 25th of this month. I am currently 220lbs, 5.5" and plan on being around 215 lbs the day of surgery. My question is, will the sleeve help me reach my goal of 150 lbs. I have seen a lot of posts of lower 200's not loosing very much with the sleeve (when it is a revision). Looking for personal experiences and insight! Thanks

    having difficulty

I'm 2 years out from my band to sleeve revision. I've lost 115 pounds. Yay!! But I have gained about 10 back (and I wasn't done losing). I feel like I've been on a sugar binge since before the holidays. I cannot seem to get back on track. i'm eating things I know I shouldn't, even when I'm buying the chocolate, Cookies, etc, I have a conversation in my head about why I shouldn't buy it but then I do it anyway. I've gotten so far away from the "rules" and cannot seem to get back on despite every intention to do so every day. Any help, ideas or kick in the ass would be welcome.

    Gallbladder?

i had mine out 15 days after revision,,, never had attacke in my life til then.
  23. You have to lose the weight. You have started to take it seriously and that is the first step to taking charge and handling the situation. You need to take charge.Do your research and decide with your dr which procedure is best for you.Do your research and ask many questions. I am a revision from a failed lapband to bypass which I am happy with and works for me. I have a friend who opted for the sleeve and she is happy with her results. YOU decide which procedure is best for you. These are all major operations and your way of life will/must change.
  24. Anyone have a similar story? Had my husband rush me to the ER on Saturday because I thought I was having a heart attack. Just out of the blue I had severe chest pain right below my xiphoid process/sternum with shortness of breath. (I was on FaceBook and drinking a cup of coffee.) It lasted about an hour then just vanished as quickly as it came on. All of my tests and EKG were normal, so the ER discharged me and sent me on my merry way. I called my surgeon and he thinks it sounds like a possible "internal hernia." I questioned rather he thought it might be gall stones, but he said I didn't have any of the classic symptoms. Going on Monday for "laparoscopic exploratory surgery" and whatever they find, they will repair it while they're in there. Anyone have a similar experience? If so, what did they end up finding? P.s. I am 5 months out RNY revision from Lap Band.
  25. Understood now. I am familiar with revision surgery.
